Tribune/Specrtum dispute

Diamond Resorts Tournament of Champions

This tournament is now an official LPGA event, but it still has celebrities, as it did as a Champions Tour event.

Question about owgr

Something occurred to me. We list the tournaments in order of "total rating value". And conveniently, they all typically have a player value of at least 50. Well, what happens if one of these times, a certain tournament that usually makes it on to the list by being high up in the "total rating value" happens to have a player value below 50 this time around? What are we to do? Simply skip it and not put it in the list? I'll give you an example: The Abu Dhabi event, this year, is only at a player value of 48. Usually this event would make it on to the list by being high up in the "total rating value". But since the player value is below 50 this time, the current logic would dictate that it cannot be on the list. But what if this Abu Dhabi tournament's "total rating value" ends up being higher than certain other tournaments whose player value is at least a 50? We would actually be skipping right over it as if it didn't exist, and then going right on to the next one down on the list. You can see the dilemma, right? The case you describe can't happen. Except for the majors and flagship events, the "Event Rating" is directly derived from the "Total rating value". The only tournament that arguably could make the list with a lower "Total rating value" is the BMW PGA Championship - it had a "Total rating value" of 283 in 2018 which would have been an "Event Rating" of 46 but has a tournament minimum of 64 as the European Tour "flagship event". The purpose of the list is to show the "highest rated" tournaments for a given year. It also shows how the rating is determined - four numerical columns that follow from the preceding description of the ratings and rankings. Since the list is replaced every year, I have no problem if a tournament like Abu Dhabi comes and goes from the list. 50 is a nice round number (and half of the max) so it's a logical cut-off point - and it makes the list a reasonable size. The overall purse has an increase of $200,000, but the 1st place increase is only $26,000. This suggests that the winner's portion increase is only 13 percent. Spectrum and Golf Channel confusion

I don't know if you noticed, but, a week ago, the Spectrum cable program guide (which you see when you access it in the cable box) showed, for today at 10:00 AM Eastern time on Golf Channel, that promotional "PGA Tour Live" coverage of the API for four hours, to precede the regularly scheduled coverage at 2:00 PM. Well, fast forward to last night, I went back into the program guide in the cable box to take another look to make sure that the "PGA Tour Live" portion was still scheduled for 10:00 this morning. But what I found was that it had been taken out and replaced with what was "Golf Central Pregame". When I saw that there, I was disappointed. Needless to say, the "PGA Tour Live" feed of the API did not happen this morning. So, on the one hand, I can say I have seen several mistakes in the Spectrum cable box program guide in the recent past (I am sure I told you about one or two of them). But also, there is also a chance that it wasn't Spectrum's fault this time. Perhaps Golf Channel was planning on giving us, as they did with the first rounds of the Farmers Insurance Open and the Genesis Open, some "PGA Tour Live" coverage today of the API, and at some point they changed their mind and decided not to give it to us afterall. If that is the case, then obviously Spectrum would have been instructed to take it out of the program guide. So, the question is, was it simply another mistake by Spectrum, and they realized their mistake and corrected it, which would suggest that there never really was any plan for Golf Channel to show the "PGA Tour Live" feed this morning for four hours preceding the regularly scheduled four hours of regular Golf Channel coverage? Or, was the Spectrum guide initially correct, and that there was a plan for Golf Channel to show us the "PGA Tour Live" feed this morning for the four hours, and at some point in the last couple of days Golf Channel must have changed their mind and decided not to give it to us after all? I simply don't know who is to blame with this, the guys that program the Spectrum cable program guide, or Golf Channel for a change of plans. Either way, it is disappointing, because we were hoping to see that extra coverage, as we did with the first rounds of the Farmers Insurance Open and the Genesis Open. I checked the channel guide in the Spectrum cable box, and it has been updated to show that it will be a rerun of the China Open at 10:00 AM on Thursday, instead of the "PGA Tour Live" bonus coverage of the Wells Fargo Championship. Tee times

Have you ever seen tee times in tournaments be only eight minutes apart when the groups are in three's? I don't remember tee times being eight minutes apart even in groups of two's, let alone three's. I noticed that the ANA Inspiration has tee times eight minutes apart. Low ratings

The viewership numbers of the Zurich Classic this past weekend were shockingly low (at least in the USA). Even the final round on Sunday on CBS got only less than 1.5 million viewers. The typical Sunday usually gets two to three times that much for the PGA Tour on CBS (or NBC). It appears that golf fans simply aren't liking the team concept. L.E.T. coverage

My cable box TV schedule is showing in its listings that Golf Channel will have same day coverage of the Ladies European Tour's "La Reserva de Sotogrande Invitational" on Thursday, May 16th. Hopefully this will hold true and not be a mistake like so many of the other listings. If this turns out to be true, this will be interesting for at least three reasons. Firstly, the fact that Golf Channel will be showing the first round of an LET event is very rare. Second, it's also rare that Golf Channel shows same day coverage of the LET. And third, Spanish golfer Nuria Iturrios has now won her 2nd consecutive LET tournament, and this tournament will be played in her home country of Spain. So, if we do in fact get to see it, that would be great (despite the fact that the average golf fan in the USA doesn't have much interest). Premier League on Golf Channel!

I was looking through the TV schedule for the British Masters, and I found that, from what is posted, the British Masters must apparently be scheduled to finish early in the day on Sunday, because at 9:59 AM Eastern time (2:59 PM in the UK) Golf Channel is scheduled to show an English Premier League game. I know that Golf Channel is in the NBC family, and NBC shows the Premier League frequently. And I know that the Sky Network, which used to be affiliated with the Fox family, is now affiliated with the NBC family, and the Sky family does in fact also show the English Premier League. All of this is fine, except for the fact that it is soccer scheduled to be on Golf Channel, which doesn't seem right, especially if it means that we will be cut off from seeing the end of the final round of the British Masters. Personally I'm hoping that this is only another silly mistake made by the people who put the programming into the Spectrum cable box. Viewership

Of all the nonmajors this year, the Memorial Tournament had a better Thursday and Friday than any tournament this year, except for The Players. It's good to see the Memorial did so well, and in the next day or so I will be able to find out how it did on the weekend. Not sure if this means that the Canadian Open will have big numbers too, but definitely the US Open should have great numbers this year because of Koepka, Woods, and the fact that it will be out on the west coast, enabling a lot more viewers to watch in the afternoon. While the final round of the Memorial was on CBS, Fox had the final round of the Women's US Open, which got only 728,000 viewers nationwide. There's always a large gap between the number of viewers the men of the PGA get and the women of the LPGA get. And this was one of the rare times I was able to even find the women's numbers. (I never was able to find the numbers for the final round of the ANA Inspiration.) The numbers for a typical LPGA event usually aren't even released to the public. Apparently there is more enthusiasm around the USA for women's tennis than for women's golf. As I said, this women's US golf Open had a final round of 728 thousand, but last September's women's championship match of the US tennis Open got 3 million viewers around the USA, which is more than 4 times what the women's golf received. Not sure if your interested or not, but with the numbers that have come in for the US Open and the finish of the hockey, Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals got a little over 8 million viewers around the USA, and the final round of the US Open golf tournament got over 7 million viewers. I did not anticipate more people wanting to watch the hockey game than the final round of the golf. I know it's like comparing apples to oranges, but still. And while I'm at it, it turns out that CBS did better with the Canadian Open a few weeks ago than they did with the Travelers Championship this past weekend. Compared to the Canadian Open, CBS had, for the Travelers Championship, 100,000 fewer viewers on Saturday, and 500,000 fewer viewers on Sunday. Who knows what all could factor into that happening, but I wouldn't think that CBS would do better with the Canadian Open than with the Travelers Championship. It turns out that the Rocket Mortgage Classic only got 329,000 viewers on Friday on Golf Channel, which makes that the worst Friday this year so far for the PGA Tour. But maybe we can give it the benefit of the doubt because, at that same time, people may have been flipping over to watch Team USA in the Women's World Cup. PGA Tour Live

The TV schedule is once again showing a presentation of "PGA Tour Live" as a free treat on Golf Channel for the first round of a PGA Tour event, this time the Travelers Championship. That Thursday, the "PGA Tour Live" portion is scheduled to be on in two sections, 7:30 to 9:30 AM, and 12:00 to 2:00 PM, Eastern time. I think it is wrong to include the section on this page that says Nicklaus and Woods have won 3 career slams. The full name of the tournament is KPMG Women's PGA Championship. Unfortunately, the women's majors don't enjoy the same stature as the men's majors and have to have sponsored names, that's the current reality. I don't have a problem with the article titles being the non-sponsored versions but to eliminate the full name entirely is ignoring reality. Standard compromise practice elsewhere is to separate the sponsored version from the neutral version (i.e. "The 2019 Women's PGA Championship (branded as 2019 KPMG Women's PGA Championship for sponsorship reasons"). On the articles of tennis tournaments, it is actually standard practice to not recognize the naming rights sponsor at all (such as the Indian Wells Masters, officially known as "B&P Paribas Open", although the women's tournament here doesn't seem to use the sponsorship and is just referred to as the "Indian Wells Open"). I honestly have never seen your position before. But it's all about being natural and consistent. The title of all the previous editions, given on Wikipedia, is "LPGA Championship". In fact, all of the older LPGA Championship articles do not reference their presenting sponsors in the leads at all, or do so in the way I described. About the Japan golf events

Seeing that the PGA will be cosanctioning an event in Japan for the first time (the Zozo Championship), which means that Golf Channel will have to show it to us, maybe this will be the year that Golf Channel finally allows us to see the other two big events in Japan, the Japan Open and the Dunlop Phoenix. The Japan Open is the week before the Zozo event, and then the Dunlop Phoenix is only three or four weeks after that. Golf Channel has made the decision, over the years, to randomly show us any tournament they want to show us regardless of whether they are contractually obligated to do so. So, being that they already have to show us the Zozo event, I can't see why they couldn't go ahead and show the other two events as well. There's not even a time conflict, because it will be in the middle of the night in the States anyway. And it's a shame that so many of the world's big golf names have been in those two events for years and we have not been able to see them because neither Golf Channel nor any other network has bothered to show them in the States. It turns out that neither the Japan Open nor the Dunlop Phoenix Tournament were on Golf Channel, again. It would be nice to see the Dunlop Phoenix at least, as Gary Woodland is in it. Golf Channel always used to give us that Asian Tour event in Thailand, despite that it had no names that the casual American golf fan would know. This seems like a missed opportunity by Golf Channel. Hi there. You recently made this revert with the statement that it's standard practice on golfer articles. Unfortunately a standard on a project or certain articles cannot trump the project's policies. Individual pages must follow the policies, and these pages fail MOS:FLAG on many levels. Not representing countries, not having explanations of the flag name, avoiding flags in infoboxes etc. Additionally I see nothing in the Golf wikiproject to indicate that flags should be used, no information on the golfer infobox to use flags, no style that says they need to be used. An unexpected early start

Golf Channel came on with the Open today at 4:30 AM, instead of the scheduled 5:00 AM start that the cable box schedule is showing. That might not sound like a big deal, but it could mean that many people around the USA who were planning on recording it at 5:00 AM will be upset later on when they go to watch their recording and find that the broadcast started earlier than they were led to believe. Evian

Currently, the Evian website is only showing 111 players. Usually the Evian has 120 players. Does this mean that the website isn't finished loading players, or does it mean that the Evian has shortened the number of players this year?

Okay. .. There is strangeness to the official Evian website. Many players don't have a flag under their name. Ashleigh Buhai has the Russian flag under her name despite being from South Africa. And the site is still eight players short anyway. It's all strange, and who knows if or when it will be repaired.

About the weekend coverage, this year the Evian and Senior British Open are on on the same week. Both tournaments normally have NBC coverage on the weekend. Since they can't both be on NBC at the same time, one of them would have to go to another network on the weekend. So, the Evian this year is not on NBC on the weekend, it is on CNBC. So, the Evian does not get broadcast network coverage this year, but gets cable network coverage instead. The upside is, at least this time we get the final round live. The last few years when NBC had the final round, it was on tape delay. It will be nice to have it live this time, even though it will be on cable. ... And speaking of that, to this day, the ANA Inspiration remains the only women's major not to have broadcast network coverage on the weekend. Update on golf ratings

The viewership for the final round of the Wyndham Championship on CBS was uninspiring, it got only 1.7 million viewers nationwide (the NASCAR race got 2.7 million, and that was on cable!). But good news for the Women's British Open on NBC, it got 1.186 million viewers nationwide; it was the only women's major this year to get over one million viewers nationwide for the final round. Ironic too, because it was on TV earlier in the day than the other women's majors because of the time zone situation. The final rounds of the Women's PGA Championship and the US Women's Open each got under 800 thousand viewers nationwide.

Hi Tewapack, I changed the category on Grace DeMoss because the article specifically says that she did not compete on golf at Oregon State since there was no team. Important world ranking question

I worked long and hard on making a women's version of the owgr chart to show the events and their strength ratings, and I posted it on the wwgr page this morning. I checked back in a few minutes ago, and found that an editor, who apparently never does any golf editing at all, decided to come along and take it out, citing that it should not be there because it isn't for 2019. Do you think there is any harm having it on there? It is for 2017. If someone wants to spend the time and effort making a newer one, that is fine, but in the meanwhile I don't see any harm in showing the one that I already made. Zefr does some golf editing - mainly on a handful of female golfers. I was also surprised that you chose 2017 instead of 2018 or 2019 - seems dated. The equivalent chart on OWGR page is 2018 with 2019 hidden. The bigger question I have is that the 1) the Rolex ratings formula is not public, 2) the "World rating value", "Home tour rating value", and "Total rating value" seem to have no correlation to the "Event ranking". I know that you got the values from the official site but something is missing - their values just don't make any sense except for the "Event ranking". Without details of the formula, the first three columns are meaningless. So if a 2018 or 2019 table is made, I think the only columns should be date, tournament, tour, event ranking, winner. Well, the reason that I did the 2017 chart is because I started it a year ago, about halfway through the 2018 season. It took me this long to finish it because of lack of time to work on it. So, I figured that the 2017 chart could suffice for now until an updated chart is made. As far as the values go, I could tell that not all of it quite made sense, but I went ahead and put it in the chart as it was listed at the website. Viewership update

As the playoffs are going on in golf, the interest in it appears to be picking up; the final round of the BMW Championship on Sunday got 3,150,000 viewers on NBC. ... While I am at it, Saturday afternoon at 12:30, an English Premier League game got 1,040,000 viewers on NBC, proving the popularity of European soccer in the USA. And Sunday's championship match of the US Amateur golf got 310,000 viewers on Fox, although it was up against the final round of the BMW Championship. 2020 PGA Tour: Prize Money Allocation

RE your edit of the "Cut Rules" section on the 2020 PGA Tour page, I have no issue with your deleting my mention of possible prize money distribution changes. Surely it is understood by everyone (at least unofficially) that the new cut rules may very well mean a change to the 70-place distribution method that has been a staple of the PGA Tour since 1979. Yet no official announcement of what the PGA Tour intends to do about the money distribution situation has been made up to this time.

Like me and many others, you have no doubt followed the story of the change to the Low-65 cut throughout this year of 2019. And no doubt that you may have read some reports on the possibility of a radical revision of the prize money distribution that would allow for a 20% 1st prize, which was the PGA Tour standard from 1965 to 1978. There's been nothing said of this in any recent articles announcing the new Low-65 cut rule.

Another possibility -- perhaps more likely to be put into effect -- is to adopt the 65-place money distribution currently used on the Korn Ferry Tour. Using the Korn Ferry distribution and a base $ 5.00 million purse as an example, payouts for 1st thru 25th place are the same as those in the 70-place distribution. Korn Ferry places 26th thru 65th offer slightly different payouts vs. those for the 70-place distribution.

No TV for the Asian finish

I checked the cable box schedule (which shows up to 13 days in advance) to see what will be on Golf Channel the last couple of weeks, and it is not showing either of the last two Asian Tour events (Indonesia and Thailand). This is disappointing, because each year we could usually count on Golf Channel showing at least one of those last two events. But also, usually Golf Channel would show the entire last tournament of the Ladies European Tour for the year, but this year they aren't doing that either; Golf Channel will only be showing abbreviated 3rd and 4th rounds of that final LET event in Kenya, being run next Monday and Tuesday. Births/Deaths categories

Why do you make a point of moving these to the end of the category list (like with Jo Ann Washam)? It doesn’t really matter, but these are usually among the first categories listed (usually after an eponymous category if it exists). By MOS:CATORDER, "Normally the most essential, significant categories appear first." Birth/death categories are the least significant categories, that's why I put them last. My standard order for golfers is significance driven: golf categories first, other sports/awards/honors cats next, location-related cats next, b/d/living cats last. OK, that explains it - you have a different opinion of most/least important categories for biographies than many people. Most would say it’s the most significant info in a biographical article - it’s always the first information listed in the article after name, it’s one of the few items deemed important enough to appear in just about every infobox, etc. But like I said, it doesn’t really matter and where those categories sit isn’t mandated, I was just interested in a different POV. My cable box TV schedule is showing an entry for Golf Channel to have the Hong Kong Open in a couple weeks, despite the fact that the HKO is not co sanctioned with the European Tour this time.
