Welcome to MILHIST

Hello and welcome to the Military history WikiProject! As you may have guessed, we're a group of editors working to improve Wikipedia's coverage of topics related to military history.

A few features that you might find helpful:

Our navigation box points to most of the useful pages within the project.
The announcement and open task box is updated very frequently. You can watchlist it if you are interested, or you can add it directly to your user page by copying the following: {{WPMILHIST Announcements}}.
Important discussions take place on the project's main discussion page; it is highly recommended that you watchlist it.
The project has several departments, which handle article quality assessment, detailed article and content review, writing contests, and article logistics.
We have a number of task forces that focus on specific topics, nations, periods, and conflicts.
We've developed a set of guidelines that cover article structure and content, template use, categorization, and many other issues of interest.
If you're looking for something to work on, there are many articles that need attention, as well as a number of review alerts.

New Reflinks tool

Hey Teri-- looks like there is a new and reliable Reflinks tool developed by User:Zhaofeng Li that you and the volunteers can use. I've tested it out in a few places and it seems to work quite well, and even has a few customization options that weren't previously available. To add it in, go to Special:MyPage/common.js and add in the following text:

How to block

Only admins can block, and I'm not one. The usual sequence of events is to give the vandal a sequence of increasingly severe warnings: {{uw-vandalism1}}, {{uw-vandalism2}}, {{uw-vandalism3}}, {{uw-vandalism4}}, and then to report them at WP:AIV. Sometimes, if several vandals are targeting a single page, it's better to request page protection at WP:RFPP instead. Philip Trueman (talk) 16:11, 28 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

A new reference tool

Hello Books & Bytes subscribers. There is a new Visual Editor reference feature in development called Citoid. It is designed to "auto-fill" references using a URL or DOI. We would really appreciate you testing whether TWL partners' references work in Citoid. Sharing your results will help the developers fix bugs and improve the system. I'm assuming you're referring to the completed tasks? My plan is to migrate the to-do list over to our Wikipedia Requests system which will make it easier to keep track of tasks as they are done. As for the tasks already completed, I could move them over and then immediately mark them as complete. The tool does not do this yet but there will be a counter to keep track of completed tasks. It shouldn't be an issue to work those in; there's a bot that will generate a list of DYKs for a WikiProject and the completed articles can be documented in Wikipedia Requests as above (with a list of said completed articles generated). Harej (talk) 22:12, 25 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The third grant-funded round of WikiProject X has been completed. Unfortunately, while this round has not resulted in a deployed product, I am not planning to resume working on the project for the foreseeable future. Please see the final report for more information.

April 2021 WikiProject Military History Reviewing Drive

Hey y'all, the April 2021 WikiProject Military History Reviewing Drive begins at 00:01 UTC on April 1, 2021 and runs through 23:59 UTC on April 31, 2021. Points can be earned through reviewing articles on the AutoCheck report, reviewing articles listed at WP:MILHIST/ASSESS, reviewing MILHIST-tagged articles at WP:GAN or WP:FAC, and reviewing articles submitted at WP:MILHIST/ACR. Service awards and barnstars are given for set points thresholds, and the top three finishers will receive further awards. I stumbled into this subject on the GLAM redlink page and have been really taken with her story. I'm finding lots of sources, but could use more. The page will definitely be put up for DYK. Does the museum library have any information on the WAC Special Services Entertainment programs? The entire subject matter of WWII WACs is fascinating. If I need to visit, I'll be glad to come down. Wow! I just stumbled onto her married name and as Jane Douglass White, she became quite a figure as a professional musician and Christian entertainer. There's a bunch of material available. Thanks so much. I've put this up for DYK (along with her song) but I'll be building this article in the meantime. Lots of high to medium quality sources. Originally this was just about a school teacher who joined the wartime army and wrote a song. It's going to be about a young soldier who took her wartime experiences and made another career out of the confidence and contacts she made while a soldier. I'm looking for Far from Eden by Camilla Mays Frank, an autobiography by White's WAC song co-author. I don't see it in the Pritzker museum library collection based on a preliminary search. It does appear to be available for second-hand purchase. I'm not anxious to buy it merely for the purpose of article creation/improvement, but might do so if I knew the book would be accepted by the library as a donation after my use. I have too many history books already. This sort of work seems exactly in line with the museum's focus on the citizen soldier. BusterD (talk) 18:54, 4 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Abstract: The article reports that the captain's gigs of 11 U.S. Navy aircraft carriers will be phased out by June 2009. It is stated that under a directive issued by the Naval Air Forces, these carriers must turn in their captain gigs, which are motorboats that bring ferry commanding officers to shore when their ships are anchored away, by June 30. It is claimed that the removal of these boats will cut the maintenance costs and free up valuable hangar bay space.

For my part I rode in an actual captain's gig once, when I was selling Navy Times at Pearl Harbor (my first job).
