@TonyTheTiger:, I added some comments there and started sandboxing it here User:Tcr25/sandbox. There are a few issues that'll need to be thought through. First, isolating the data isn't very straightforward. Second, List of U.S. states and territories by historical population attributes population based on modern state boundaries (so Dakota Territory figures from the 1870 Census is split between North and South Dakota; West Virginia data prior to 1870 is extracted from Virginia data; etc.); would you want to do the same here? Or just use data from after each state was acquired. Another factor would be deciding what "city" means. In 1810, Alexandria County, D.C. as the largest subdivision within the District of Columbia, but Washington City was the largest municipality. —Carter (Tcr25) (talk) 16:24, 30 January 2022 (UTC)

About the User Radio userbox.

I've noticed an issue with the User Radio template - if the setting is set to DAB, it links to Digital audio broadcasting which redirects to a general page about digital radio. Can we finish "talk page moves"

Hi: I understand your frustration, but may I suggest your closing the Wikipedia Nightstream ANI was premature in that I think there was likely to be consensus that "talk page moves" are disruptive but no agreement on remedy other than the offender should cease and desist. It is pretty clear that every editor experiencing a "talk page move" on pages they monitor found it disruptive.

Personally, I think it is vandalization where reversion occurs regardless of content, but apparently stating my opinion further confused the discussion leading to your frustration and your closing the ANI. I apologize for creating the confusion.

I would have preferred the inclusion of revision as part of the remedy, but some editors and most administrators would not approve of reversion of "unsourced." I don't like just ceasing the action and leaving the mess behind for other editors to correct but at least that would stop the one practice and create precedence for future stoppages. So may I request you reopen the ANI with discussion limited to whether or not it is disruptive, and the editor notified of such should decease.

If you are not interested in reopening the discussion on ANI I would appreciate your suggestion as to where to continue the discussion. I see three protentional forums:

1. Village pump (policy)
2. Wikipedia talk:Verifiability: Specifically, clarify "... may be removed ..." in WP:BURDEN to require a good faith effort at determining verifiability before removing any material (much less a lot of material))
3. Wikipedia:Vandalism types: Specifically, clarfiy WP:V/RMV by changing "unreferenced" to "not referenceable" to require a good faith effort at determining verifiability before removing any material (much less a lot of material))

Bottom line, I think "talk page moves" are burning down Wikipedia to save it.

Hi Tom94022, I wasn't the one who closed the discussion, that was NinjaRobotPirate. I agree with you that mass talk page moves as performed by Nightscream are not productive and fail to respect the obligations of WP:BURDEN (making the en masse move a WP:BADFAITH edit that can be reverted). That said, I also think engaging directly with Nightscream on it wasn't proving productive and it seemed the things kept pivoting away from focusing on the legitimacy of mass talk page moves. I'm not sure where best to raise the issue; I'm not an admin and usually don't involve myself with that side of the project. I think your suggestion of clarifying WP:BURDEN makes sense. Trying to address it in WP:V/RMV would probably be less effective for those who argue that essays don't carry the same weight as their interpretation of policy. (Although, by the same point, I'd say that even policy has to bend to WP:5P at times and that WP:NOTBURO applies. WP:IAR could also apply, but could cut both ways.) I wish I knew where best to suggest bringing the point forward, but I'd also say it would be good to look closely at the supposed successes Nightscream pointed to when defending his approach. I haven't really done that in depth, but there are a few comments I've seen that I would say demonstrate a lack of good faith in trying to address concerns before a mass talk page move (including this response when it was suggested he post at a WikiProject page prior to an en masse move.) —Carter (Tcr25) (talk) 19:30, 10 September 2022 (UTC)

That's the link provided by the Guam Election Commission. Could link to the top level page for them, but they are using drive to host the results. Census

Hey, I think your edit on Kildin Saami was a slight misunderstanding, as far as I understand Russian, table 6 is about the native language of the people, as the phrase means: ”population according to native language”. ValtteriLahti12 (talk) 19:33, 4 January 2023 (UTC)

Table 4 seems to have non-native speakers as the number for German ”Nemetskij” is over 1mil and it also includes multiple million English speakers, not possibly about the native speakers. Tables 4 and 5 also include Akkala, which has been declared dead since 2003, but known to have people with knowledge of the language even after the last native died. Tables 4-5 thus must be about languages learned. I think table 1 is the one about bare ethnicity, table one translates to ”Table 1. National composition of the population” ValtteriLahti12 (talk) 19:37, 4 January 2023 (UTC)

Hi ValtteriLahti12, I agree the title for Table 6 is "population according to mother tongue" and I don't understand the Russian census tallying system well enough to say for certain, but there's definitely something that doesn't align between the two tables. Table 4 is showing 259 people who "speak" Sámi and 168 who use the language in daily life. Table 6 shows 341 people who indicated Sámi is their mother tongue. The total of respondents for Table 4 column B is the same as Table 6 column B (~147.2 million people), which I'm understanding as indicating that the Table 4 column C (use the language in daily life) is a subset of column B (speak the indicated language). If those columns are exclusive of each other, then Table 4 and Table 6 numbers are closer (427 in Table 6 vs. 341 in Table 4), but would mean that about 20% of reported Sámi speakers don't consider it their native language. Table 1 shows 1,530 people reporting Sámi "nationality," for what that adds to the consideration. I've seen estimates from 100 to 800 speakers (with the lower number being for active/fluent speakers) so all these numbers fall in the middle ... I still think the Table 4 column B value is the most accurate count of "speakers," mostly because in my mind someone could culturally identify with a mother tongue but not really consider themself a speaker of the language. —Carter (Tcr25) (talk) 20:55, 4 January 2023 (UTC)

To that last point, to use a personal example, I'm from Louisiana and my family lost French as our day-to-day language at my great-grandmother's generation. My grandmother might have considered French as a mother tongue (it was literally the first language of her mother), but it wasn't the language she learned, used, or passed on to my mother. (Totally recognize that I might be making a distinction that doesn't exist for respondents to the Russian census, but it's part of the lens I'm looking at this through.) —Carter (Tcr25) (talk) 20:59, 4 January 2023 (UTC)

There might be something about people identifying as "natives" without being absolutely fluent because of their cultural background, I slightly discussed this in a Votic group and one commented "Usually it means someone of Votic origins trying to learn and use their historical language.", though it seems clear from Table 4 that it includes non-native speakers (as I doubt there are multiple million English natives in Russia), which is why it might be better to just go with 6. --ValtteriLahti12 (talk) 21:01, 4 January 2023 (UTC)

Yep, the difference for Swedish is even more extreme between the two tables. Part of it depends on if you equate "native speakers" with "first language," "primary language," or "fluent." I don't know if WikiProject: Languages has a clear standard here. If it's identity that's one thing; if it's fluency (which could include language learners), then the Table 4 column C "use in daily life" column might be the best one, but that would definitely miss people. I'm okay sticking with the Table 6 number (it, as with the Table 4 numbers, is within the previous estimated range). —Carter (Tcr25) (talk) 21:15, 4 January 2023 (UTC)

Table 6 might be the safest one to use as it at least claims to represent native speech, it is also plausible that some who claimed to speak Saami natively may think it redundant to report on their ability to know the language, which can explain the difference to some degree. --ValtteriLahti12 (talk) 21:20, 4 January 2023 (UTC)

I went to look at the forms used in the census and it appears to have separately asked "what languages do you know" and "what is your native language", a very plausible theory is that many of those who reported their native language as being Kildin, saw it as redundant to add it to the list on what languages they speak. --ValtteriLahti12 (talk) 21:26, 4 January 2023 (UTC)

That's possible. For a minority language where it's a strong part of your identity, though, I could see the opposite and someone would want to note it in every instance possible so that your language/people aren't invisible. Question about Clipperton Island

Hey @Tcr25, so I noticed that a couple of the articles you've worked on in the past are now good articles. Do you think the [[Clipperton Island]] article would would pass the requirements to be a good article? I've never done this sort of thing before but we both put a bunch of work into that article. Case in point the Clipperton Island article we improved last month is way more fleshed out then the French or Spanish versions. Hey, Dr_vulpes! I think a few things probably should be done, first, primarily in § 21st century to make it less a chronological string of events. Some of it is a bit trivial and should just be (the 2019 earthquake and (in § Castaways) the fisherman who drifted past the island but couldn't reach it); other bits might be able to be shifted elsewhere in the article. For example, the fish smuggling bit might make sense as a line under § Flora and fauna highlighting treats to the ecosystem or a new "Environmental threats" section (hopefully with a better title) that includes marine diversity, climate change threats, and pollution, which would pull a few other grafs out of 21st century. Also, consider adding a "Governance" section that discusses its current political status within France (and include in that the bits about transfer of control to the Minister of Overseas France, Philippe Folliot's visit, the formal renaming in 2022, etc.). That said, go ahead and put it up for consideration; the worst thing that happens is there's more feedback about things that might help improve it. —Carter (Tcr25) (talk) 13:42, 12 May 2023 (UTC)

New Orleans CSA map

Thank you for updating File:New Orleans–Metairie–Hammond combined statistical area.svg to show the new Slidell MSA. However, as part of the same definition change, Hammond was moved from the New Orleans CSA to the new Baton Rouge CSA, so this is causing some problems on various metro area pages when the image doesn't match the text.
