87.9 MHz

I voted to merge the contents of the article with the article on the RF spectrum. I have to agree that it's madness to have one article for every single frequency in a given part of radio spectrum. If you have an article on 87.9, that opens the door for someone to make an article for every 200 kc thereafter through 107.9, then someone in the UK might make 88.0, 88.2, blah blah. No need for that. All relevant data should probably be merged into the RF spectrum article. Looks like the Rhode Island LP stations remain (which they should) and that town in Florida, you are correct, the -LP call sign should remain and in most cases the call sign should remain as it is, not knocked down to the 4 letter abbrev. On removing "Useless zeroes" from WBCQ

Why are you insisting on reporting shortwave frequencies in megahertz and then removing "useless zeroes"? First of all, the zeroes are not useless, see significant figures to understand why. Second of all, shortwave frequencies are often reported in either kHz or MHz, and when reporting in MHz, the nearly universal practice is to include 3 significant figures after the decimal point. WBCQ's own web pages report them both ways, and includes the zeroes that you deem "useless" when using MHz. See, e.g., wbcq.com home page: "Effective Friday, November 9, 2007, WBCQ's 18.910 MHz service has changed frequencies to 17.495 MHz." As you say you are familiar with significant figures as used in physics, then you should also be aware that a frequency measurement in kHz or MHz (by the way, I don't think I've seen any publications printed later than 1979 that use "kc." and "Mc.") is a physical quantity. Radio is indeed physics, not math. We don't need to say "18.91000" because shortwave stations are generally 5 kHz apart, so any precision beyond that would be useless and redundant. The issue is not about confusion, but about having a consistent style in Wikipedia. To further my argument, I cite the Wikipedia Manual of Style on decimal points, which says: "The number of decimal places should be consistent within a list or context (The response rates were 41.0 and 47.4 percent, respectively, not The response rates were 41 and 47.4 percent, respectively), except in the unusual instances where the items were measured with unequal precision." As I have no desire to get involved in a lame edit war over this, I will ask for a consensus at WikiProject Radio Stations and WikiProject Amateur radio. List of radio stations in Rhode Island

I fail to see why you continue to revert this page despite my explanation as to my edits. It was determined MONTHS ago at WP:WPRS (a wikiproject you don't belong to, but might like to join) that this was an appropriate format for these lists. 49 lists do not include low-power stations, and there is no reason for the 50th one to do so. Your continued WP:OWNing of this list only makes you look bad. The LPFM stations are included in the appropriate categories and the appropriate templates. FYI - Thought you might like to know that I'm going through and refreshing/updating the info in the state radio lists. I've found a quicker and easier way this go around which will make the addition of the LP stations easier. I've already done the A-states (but still have to add their LP stations). WBCQ, WXCQ, WBCQ-FM

I have spoken recently with Allan Weiner, the owner of WBCQ, WXCQ and WBCQ-FM, as well as several people who live nearby. From this I determined:

  • WBCQ-FM signed on several weeks ago and on Thursday, August 8, began a new LMA country music format.
  • 780 terminated its relationship with Channel X Radio several months ago and is pending a new format/LMA using calls WXCQ. The new client may change the calls but for now it's WXCQ.
  • The FCC database is certainly not up to date with respect to these registrations!!

I recommend reverting or changing your recent edits.

I have proposed {{AM stereo radio stations}} for deletion as a substantial duplicate of {{AM Stereo radio stations}}. I see that you created both of these and that there are subtle differences between the two. Tampa Bay Rays Radio Network

I had an issue with the notability because 'a list of radio stations' is nothing particular or encyclopedic. I see there is a bit more information now, so if it keeps going this way, then everything is fine :) The article was quite confusing then (The confuion's gone now, but I'd like to see some more improvements though, especially some wikification) especially regarding this spanish radio station airing games and not being part of a network. Q1: what games? Q2: Why are we talking about a radio station that is not part of a network on a particular network's article? I generally suggest adding information about their programs, the history of the network, any other notable thing about this network, and some good wikification. If it's when it happened, it's essentially its birth. Again, this goes to the Who, What, Where, When, Why & How. When is being sacrificed but, for example, Where isn't. They both should be allowed.Stereorock (talk) 12:52, 28 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Places are more important, provided they are specific enough. So for example on that page we would link Dallas but not Texas - because someone trying to understand KSEX-LP is more likely to find useful information in the Dallas page (about demographics, topography etc). Similarly if you look at June 12 there is no information relating to KSEX-LP - nor should there be. The fact that KSEX-Lp was awarded a permit on June 12 of some random year does not belong on that page, has nothing to do with the Peasants Revolt arriving at Blackheath, and so forth. You will find guidance at WP:MOSNUM and WP:CONTEXT.
As for discussion, the matter has been under discussion for maybe five years, culminating in a poll Wikipedia:Date_formatting_and_linking_poll#Month-day_linking.

If I am so inclined, I can look up other information about June 12. While it's true I can also enter the date in the find field box, some other people may not know June 12 even has a page. When I started here 4 years ago I didn't know dates would have their own pages or years. Now there are year pages and "Year in...(category) pages too." So, KSEX-LP's sign-on date may be included in 1997 in television. As for no value being in the link, I think that depends on who is clicking the link. Someone in Dallas or elsewhere may not know of the Peasants' Revolt nor, up to that point, care.

As for places, I've seen that the "standard" (again, I don't know if there is one nor where to go to find the places equivalent of the dates group) is to link BOTH the community and larger jurisdiction (states, provinces, counties, etc.) separately (e.g.: Dallas, Texas). So someone can click on Dallas OR Texas and find out information on either instead of just being Dallas, Texas. To me the dates are as important as places because it helps me think of what the world was like when an even happened. The history of a station that started September 9, 2001 or July 18, 1969 would be different that one started 4 days after, for example. What did its crew have to do in the first few days of broadcasting when the event happened or did they decide to postpone their launch? Or, what about a group of ex-G.I.s who bought a station and flipped its format on V.J. Day? The very date itself is then relevant to the history of the station. Another example would be someone thinking to themselves "CZAR in Ottawa started on July 1? What's July 1? *click* Oh, it's Canada Day!" The beauty of Wikipedia, to me, seems not to be that it's a defacto depository of all the world's information but that other information can be found out that somebody may not have thought to even look up before. It's all interwoven like a web. It looked like the vote has already been decided and I don't know if it's too late to add my 2 cents. Per your revert here, you should be aware that dates (including DOBs) are no longer linked per MOS:UNLINKYEARS. There is no relevance to linking to August 8 when that page simply says that Joe Tex (or whomever) was born on that date and nothing more. That info is already in the article and doesn't need to be explained further. Additionally, dates should be properly spaced and include an en dash (per MOS:DOB) Thanks. It's not a game. A game is when some group comes out of nowhere and decides what they want is going to be the only way ANYBODY can do things. One day, out of nowhere these bots & people started delinking dates. So I chose to fight. Dates had been linked since I started here & there has never been a good reason to stop the practice presented to me or anybody else that I was able to find. Since it seemed to be an arbitrary practice, why go along with it. See, that's the beauty: you CAN pick & choose which ones to go along with. You go along with the right ones & fight the wrong ones. If there are practices you don't like but go along with, then fight! Any words misusing an apostrophe, I fix.

I was able to find the group which apparently decided this & registered my disagreement with their decision & how it wasn't brought up to a vote of EVERY USER. Even then, there will be new users. That's the beauty of Wikipedia.Stereorock (talk) 02:31, 29 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, the date-autoformatting. But it goes further than that. The past year in particular has seen a tightening of the guidelines on overlinking more broadly, to protect the linking system from the widespread dilution that was occurring. Readers are clearly more likely to click on an item if the text is not densely linked with useless links. I notice "radio" and "American" are typically linked in a few articles in your contribs list I looked at. These clearly should not be linked. Please see WP:LINK. Another issue is the bunching up of two or three geographical links, when just one (the most specific), is much more effective. Chicago, Illinois, not Chicago, Illinois. The overarching goal is to focus readers' attention on smaller bits of blue (otherwise the dilution effect weakens the wikilinking system). So, as above, bluing only "Chicago" is preferred to bluing both city and state (and country) name. If readers were going to click on anything, it would be the most specific; the Chicago article immediately presents links to state and country, anyway (the "chain" link effect). It can make recommmendations, and set guidelines if there is consensus among a wider audience, but it is not a policy. I may not understand radio stations, but I do understand the Phillies, and I do understand that the callsign is denoted as it was in the source, so all I was doing was following a reliable source as dictated by WP:RS, an actual policy.   • WP:MOSDASH concerns the use and placement of endashes (as ought to be used in the article) as opposed to hyphens and emdashes. FYI, the hyphen is often misused instead of the endash.   • WP:MOSLINK referred to the linkage of the common term radio station. I guess one could argue that this link is highly relevant, but really one must be able to expect the reader's understanding of the subject will be deepened by clicking through to the target. However, it is one term I see overexploited. Broadcasting in the United States would be an improvement, either as [[Broadcasting in the United States|American radio station]], or unpiped in the 'See also' section.
  • As Tony mentions below, use of the piped link [[1956 in radio|1956]] is deceptive, certainly in the context it was used in the article. There would not be a problem if the unpiped link was used, either adjacent to the station's birthdate or as a 'See also'.
  • Incidentally, I would just say that the article has been on my watchlist for years. I cannot recall why I put it there, but suspect that I felt at the time there were issues. Template:Boston Radio

I'd ordinarily agree with you on AM coming before FM (although, interestingly, I can't find any guideline in that regard anywhere on the WP:WPRS homepage). However, practically every single other market navbox is set up with FM as group 1, AM as group 2, and the call signs as group 3. It just wouldn't make sense for this one navbox to be different from the rest. If you think it's worthwhile, determing a standard format would certainly be interesting topic for the project talk page, as the other navboxes would need to be reformatted as well if there was to be a change. Years in radio

These aticles are for international events and should therefore use international date format. The preponderence of minor US entries does not justify the use US date format. The proliferation of "minor" (i.e. not internationally notable) US entries is probably due to the fact that when these articles (the early Years in radio articles anyway) were begun they were concerned solely with US radio. THis has been corrected to some extent by the inlcusion of non-US events, though some of those are also somewhat minor. As with the parent Year articles where there was, and still is, a US bias this has been ameliorated by the Year in Country articles. Cut and paste page move of WBFJ

Hi, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you recently tried to give WBFJ a different title by copying its content and pasting either the same content, or an edited version of it, into WBFJ (AM). This is known as a "cut and paste move", and it is undesirable because it splits the page history, which is legally required for attribution. Instead, the software used by Wikipedia has a feature that allows pages to be moved to a new title together with their edit history.

In most cases, once your account is four days old and has ten edits, you should be able to move an article yourself using the "Move" tab at the top of the page. This both preserves the page history intact and automatically creates a redirect from the old title to the new. If you cannot perform a particular page move yourself this way (e.g. because a page already exists at the target title), please follow the instructions at requested moves to have it moved by someone else. Also, if there are any other pages that you moved by copying and pasting, even if it was a long time ago, please list them at Wikipedia:Cut and paste move repair holding pen. I have nominated 3 of these articles for deletion. I can see what you are trying to do. However, I think that perhaps you ought to keep the articles in your user space until such time as they are reasonably complete. To put it another way, I don't believe the only radio stations using this frequency are 2 stations in Japan. I further not above that similar articles were deleted as not being in line with the deletion policy. I have not nominated the rest for deletion, because I don't have time and thought it would be a good idea if you were given the chance to explain yourself. Your removal of "useless spaces"

They serve the following functions:

In the case of the vertical separator, the space (or spaces, when indented with a Navbox subgroup), preceding the separator mark the logical structure of the template. It is very helpful, and reduces coding erors in any form of programming, if the visual structure of a program/template matches its logical structure. The single space following the separator helps avoid confusion – especially for the visually impaired – with a lower-case "L" or an upper-case "i", where it might otherwise be read as part of the folloowing word. This is just good programming practice. Similarly, the space after the initial asterisk makes the line much easier to read.

Overall, the make the template easier to read and to edit, and help avoid errors. That's why they're not "useless".

I'm thinking of looking at David Eduardo's site which has old Broadcasting Yearbooks in PDF that we've used for stations going back before 1979. User:Neutralhomer seems to have a real problem with any history being in the article at all. It is true there was some information that, as worded, violated NPOV, so I took that out, but everything else went back. The edit summary claimed the information didn't match the sources, but I want to know where he got the sources. He can't say that if he actually looks, but I don't know if he can.

And he's overly enthusiastic about WSMX too. He claims the information is not in the sources, but I ask the question: Did he go to the basement of the Winston-Salem library and look at those sources? You are readding sources added a very over-zealous anon, so forgive me if I don't believe the text-only sources are correct. The linked sourced weren't or only had vague mentions of WTOB or WSMX, not the multiple mentions as the anon used it for. Again, forgive me if I don't believe those are correct either.
I did leave the most correct information on both pages as I did see both in updating the two pages. Also, the WSMX's slogan is not used on the air (by DJ or in bumpers). Now, granted this could be considered OR, but after listening to the station for some 3 hours last night and a couple today (non-stop), I never heard the slogan used once. To be honest, I never heard much except for some commercials and the top-of-the-hour ID last night and a very unexperienced DJ today.

WMYB

WMYB-AM, the station at 1450 AM, is certainly entitled to be there. Whether it should be called WRNN (AM) can be debated. Some say the history goes with the frequency, although if the station signed off and the frequency was not used for several years, maybe that's not the case. I felt the obvious solution was to put the early history of WMYB in the WRNN article under "History of 1450 AM" while WKZQ and WTGR went under "History of 1520 AM". Mexico radio templates

Hey, I was doing something recently and noticed you flipped the AM and FM order of Template:Mexico State Radio. All of the Mexico radio boxes in that style (exceptions: a bunch of border areas, Mexico City, anything in Tamaulipas) have FM first and then AM. I understand your reasoning but opted to put FM back on top.

The main reason is that upwards of 70% of Mexican radio stations are FMs. The government's AM-FM migration scheme has left very few AMs that are standalone (without an FM partner), and indeed, not many AMs overall. Outside of big cities (where there wasn't room), certain indigenous radio services (where coverage area matters and they're daytimers to start), and odds and ends here and there, most radio stations are FMs or AM-FM combos.

I wanted to ask your opinion on some of the different types of templates we have for Mexico:

  • Standard: FM in the first line, AM in the next line, sorted by frequency statewide. Example: Template:Nayarit Radio.
  • American: Sorted by frequency alone or frequency and calls. Example: Template:Reynosa Radio, Template:Tijuana Radio. I personally don't like this.
  • Chihuahua/BC: Sorted by frequency within geographic areas. Example: Template:Chihuahua Radio. I like this for bigger states because of the number of stations. For Chihuahua, which is very large and has several radio markets in it, it makes a lot of sense.

If we standardize on one, which should we keep? I'd like to consolidate the AM and FM listings into one box (and list combos one time, for instance "XHCHH 97.1 + 650"), but I'm not sure what you'd want to do. Raymie (t • c) 08:10, 23 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

WWRI-LP

Just wanted to point out the introductory text to that list – "The following is a list of the FCC-licensed radio stations...". That's the same on every one of those state lists, and the standard has always been that we don't include any station until they've been issued their license to cover. That's true regardless of whether they just have a construction permit, or they're operating under program test authority. In fact, if precedent is any guide, there probably shouldn't even be an article yet. Not going to get into a thing about it, though - I've seen you around enough to know that you're a good hand. Their license filing has also been accepted so, government nonsense aside, it ought to be issued reasonably soon.

You are correct that a comma is permitted with four digits, but the point is that the article was correct previously. Most of what we were taught in school is a gross oversimplification. :) Per WP:MOS, both no-comma and comma are acceptable for four digits. Yes, MOS would dictate commas for five-digit SW frequencies but IMO that's a case of "defer to the sources". Jeh (talk) 13:41, 29 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Additional: I think WP: WPRS needs to weigh in so its codified. Right now, S.W. stations' frequencies are a gray area. Maybe WP: Radio should weigh in too. For me, it seems when a whole band exists over 1 of a base unit vs. 1,000, then the smaller number takes precedence, which is why I prefer MHz for S.W. frequencies. Admittedly, there are a lot of shortwave stations giving their frequencies in kHz, which clouds matters. Short wave frequencies

Sorry but I've been a SWL since the mid-60s... you are mistaken. For current refs, see for example this online guide and this sample page from the WRTH. For older, try the SWL column from this 1971 issue of EI (you'll have to scroll to page 38 for that one), or this one from 1967 Popular Electronics (page 83), etc., etc. here are a couple of Sony SW portables - my ICF 2010 agrees. As does my little Tecsun PL-380. You will find exceptions in some radios (the Icom R75 is one and I believe the Kenwood tabletops are, as well) but kHz with no digit separator is and has long been the notation used in SW program listings. Thanks for those links! I started SWLing about a quarter-century after you, around 1991. I am a student of radio history and enjoy reading as much historical material as I can. I have seen in old FCC documents (1930s-1940s) that they gave the frequencies in Mc. vs. kc. and the radios showed Mc. as well. I suppose that's due to the fact that, for example 2 and 10 take up less space than 2,000 and 10,000 do on an analog dial. I have a 1979 Zenith Transoceanic that has the frequencies in MHz and I don't know this, but suspect listing kHz became more common once digital receivers came about. I have a Radio Shack DX-402 with kHz figures, but have a cheapy portable that has it in MHz. But, I realize I am just rambling. I should go to bed. Oh, one last thing-you seem to be versed in SI units. Was it 1960 when cycles fell by the wayside in favor of hertz? That is my understanding which is why I wrote cycles for events happening between circa 1924-1959, and hertz from 1960-now. The changeover seems to have coincided with the 1960 metric conference. Re the pattern for shortwave freqs, well, I did give you two old magazine refs from the pre-Hertz era that used kc (with no comma) for their shortwave columns. I believe it was the 1960 conference that recommended the changeover - it was not mandatory - and manufacturers and publishers just got around to it whenever it was convenient. Electronics Illustrated was by the way an SI holdout; they stuck with kc, megacycles, etc. for many years after PE switched. (The real joy there is that all of those old EI, PE, RE, etc., issues are online!)
I understand the rationale for using kc., etc., for things that happened in those times. After all if you look up the old FCC docs you will not find any kHz or MHz. But in general MOS:UNITS prefers SI units unless there is a compelling reason to do otherwise. Note that when writing about e.g. the pyramids of Egypt, we don't give their height in rods or cubits or whatever the ancient Goa'uld Egyptians used, even though there might be references for those. It wouldn't matter much in this case since the numbers don't change, but additional relevant WP principles are WP:COMMONNAME (which is written for article titles but is commonly cited re body copy as well), and the "principle of least astonishment": The vast majority of WP readers likely never heard of "kilocycles", so the information just flows more smoothly into the brain if we stick to the more familiar unit name, even though there's no numeric conversion. It always helps when a user in a disagreement sees the opposite view & the reason you listed is why I put things in cycles, as Hz would be anachronistic. When I would read it, it seemed anachronistic, but I completely get that most people wouldn't know cycles; I didn't until the late 1980s when I was about 10. You make a good point about cubits & Goa'uld: I've never heard of the latter & only know the former from trying to read the Bible when I was younger (I gave up). There's justification in P&G for deleting any slogan entry that doesn't have a reference. Besides, most stations these days have more than one, they change them the way I change my socks, and who's to say what "the" slogan is? Nor should we try to keep up with multiple ones. I get a feeling the banned editor was listening to the stations' streams and every time a liner was played, the slogan category got changed. True, a station can have more than one slogan, and I have no problem with not being up-to-the-second. But, I wonder about some of the edits; there were a few that said something like "Such & Such A Place's 24-hour news and traffic station". They were for stations that weren't news all-night. I had inserted 2 more headings / topics that are also eliminated since your 'revert'.

If my knowledge and readings-learnings = that are neutral and not partial nor personally/ financially interested, nor conflict of interests, etc. is unwanted and unexamined, and just reverted/deleted, then I can leave and know Wikipedia is not what it claims to be.

Very very old info was in these two radio station related sites before, mostly written by those promoting their own shows/programs. My attempts to update them some finally and provide actual information and also references as to where to get more info have been deleted.

I'm not super-knowledgeable on HTML either. From what I remember of that particular revision, it was because you put in, and numbered, references that weren't connected to any body of text. What were your liked references in reference to? It looked like you just added links. They weren't references, but just links. Those go in the external links section. As for subsequent revisions, you'll have to ask whomever pulled them down why they did that. If they were just to some angry Guy's YouTube video who had a bone to pick with Pacifica, that might not be seen as a quality link. (talk page stalker) PMFJI, but... One: Stereorock only deleted the two links you added at the end of the references section. He didn't do any of the other deletions you're on about.
Two: I'd have deleted those links also. Per WP:ELNO, item 11, if nothing else. Both of them are basically gripe sites, neither shows a shred of a sign of editorial oversight. And as SR said, you just made up two numbers (which would have been wrong the next time a proper ref was added) and did not tie them to anything in the text you added to the article. If I see ill-formatted references I'll usually fix them up, but in this case there was no way to know how to do that (and no editor is going to pore through your text to see where you might have wanted them to go).
Editing WP is very little about HTML. WP has its own markup notation. There is help all over the site; you could start with this. Or you can try the visual editor. But if you just want to put a "bare" reference to a web site into an article, you can use <ref>your_URL_goes_here</ref>. Or if you want to add a description of the site you can use <ref>[your_URL_goes_here your_description_goes_here]</ref>. Someone else will turn it into the fancier "cite web" or whatever form. You'll get the hang of that soon (it's not difficult).

That's works. I wish I could explain better when we use "the" in English, I know it can be a bit confusing at times; it can even vary within dialects. For example, in the U.S., we say "go to the hospital" whereas in the U.K., it's "go to hospital." I am unsure why it varies like it does. If you would like me to look over any further sentences, please let me know! By the way, it sounds like "Globe Soccer Awards" would use a "the" if the sentence were "...Best Academy of the year at the Globe Soccer Awards." stereorock guy keeps reverting my contents instead of assisting in any errors in processing HTML and claims biases untrue and wrong. There is no opinion but actual updated reporting of difficult to obtain changes occurring in these radio stations. I have no bias, no sides, no views I want to advertise nor promote, tho you make such wild accusations for your own reasons. Please explain if you know more Facts and Current Events happening at either radio station or umbrella to 5 radio stations. I am not on any board, not benefited and not spinning in any directions, other than wanting others to be updated, and to learn and know what is so difficult to be publicly known. If you have more direct factual information, please advise. Otherwise, I have learned from reverts that Wikipedia is controlled by those who want to control actual, factual info, keeping only old material that was spun before, and thus left on Wikipedia as-if history were accurate here. It apparently is Not. And now, given just a bit of new revelations of why my prior reverts were continually & abruptly done, this contributor shall resign. Easily. And let the site remain as antiquated, not verified- nor current, be stuck there. And no one cares if "the public's" image is fake of what this site has implied Wikipedia to be. This faked image of providing the public valid current information - and that contributors genuinely write and allow others to add current/updated information in here not so true -a false reputation has been revealed. Note that "KFPK" page -History goes all the way to 1992 ...and no programs current or past are listed. And Funding is totally out of date.

Then on "Pacifica" page: The 2002 to 2009 history is not all neutral info nor sources and "oped news" referenced is a person's blog with opinions included too. Which blogs used here that are 'verifiable' and which are to be discredited is not clear. But who cares ?

The work and due diligence already given here is being reverted and retracted, leaving Wikipedia's pages on these topics as un-informative and the old-slants-only available for your readers. You win. WWTA/Boston Market Boundaries

I was wondering about the market it was in, because the most recent market map says that only southern Bristol county is in the New Bedford market, which would automatically exclude WPEP(Providence) and WWTA (Boston). What map are you using? The market would be defined by what Arbitron, now Nielsen Audio uses. I think for TV, Marion would be in the Boston DMA, but for radio, it's close to New Bedford-Fall River. I'm not sure which radio market WPEP was in & there are some that are confusing like the South Shore stations (WATD, WATD-FM, WPLM, WPLM-FM).Stereorock (talk) 19:05, 6 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Look up the 2012 Arbitron map, and you'll see that all of Plymouth county is considered part of the Boston radio market. Also, what MSA would you consider Wareham in? It is technically part of Boston, but, like with the two Plymouth stations, they blanket their signal into the Cape Cod market. That is interesting. I never knew that map existed! I don't believe there are any stations in Wareham. Since this is all new information for me, I'll say this: what I've done in the past has been dictated by "where is that signal strongest?" WWTA could never be heard in Boston, but as the map shows, it's part of the "Boston" market & yet is very close to New Bedford. I'm not sure WWTA ever actually operated (I never heard it) & is defunct now anyway. Same goes for WPEP- when I worked there it was part of a part of the Providence market but I don't think it could be considered a "Providence" station by any stretch. Well then, Stereorock, what would you consider the boundaries of the non-existent Newport market? Because in the city of Newport, all of the New Bedford and Providence stations come in clearly, with the sole exception of WWBB. I even got WMNP today fairly strong, which has been happening every time I am in Providence. Do you think the Newport template should be abolished and put into the Providence and/or New Bedford templates much like the Boston TV template has an area for Manchester-locals? Of course, three Newport area stations are on the New London market template due to their proximity, but I think that they also come in fairly well in portions of the Providence market. PDR/Portland market boundaries

I've heard WXEX go up as far north as Freeport with a reception fairly similar to Boston stations in Providence, and likewise, WHTP and WBQQ both have good reception in Dover and Rochester. Both of these stations have somewhat interchangeable market-wise, to the extent that a some Seacoast NH businesses advertise WHTP, and likewise, I've heard some Portland companies on WXEX. Ha-I see what you did there! ;p The one thing that I can think of off the top of my head is what to do about the Time/Frequency stations which are both utility AND broadcast stations all in one, that don't necessarily broadcast on those wavebands. Should they be their own line, or do you think they should go inbetween the bands? Some are on the band edges, like WWV's signals on 2.5 & 10 MHz, but its 20 & 25 MHz signals are off on their own (5MHz is within the 60-meter band) and not near a waveband. The same goes for CHU on 7.85 & 14.67MHz, for example. Personally, I like everything going up in ascending order of frequency on the template from 153 kHz to 162.55 MHz, so I am fine with the time/frequency standard stations' frequencies being on their own lines (so the WWV/WWVH 20 MHz signals are on their own between 15 & 13 meters, for example). Mexico radio templates redux?

Hey Stereorock, I noticed you flipped the AM and FM order at Template:Ciudad Juárez Radio. I had asked for some comment on this when you did it to Template:Mexico State Radio a while back (look up on the page) and never got a reply.

I didn't see that call for comments, sorry! To me, it's natural that A.M. comes first as it is the lower frequency, it is the senior service, & in Mexico, the callsigns (XE) come before the F.M. calls (XH). I was keeping with a lot of the American templates (& some British, Japanese, Canadian, etc.). Also, I would place shortwave in between A.M. & F.M., then if Mexico has weather radio on the 162MHz band, that would go last (unless there is broadcasting further up in frequency). It seems natural & logical to me that the templates go in ascending frequency (some of the British ones do, starting with Longwave). It does...I disagree with your assessment (given that there are more FMs than AMs in almost all of the boxes and that AMs tend to be second-fiddle), but you do have a good explanation. Only one box even has any shortwave on it (Mexico City). You might also have noticed that some of the templates, namely the newer ones I did when some of the templates had to be split for sanity, take a different tack (e.g. {{Xalapa Radio}} by listing combos at their FM positions). The popularity of the A.M. band should not be the deciding factor in its placement as that is subject to the whims of humanity. A.M.s could become the top-ranked band tomorrow (highly unlikely, but possible). The frequencies, however, will always be the frequencies & to me it makes sense for them to go from D.C. to daylight (LW first, then A.M., then S.W., then F.M., then weatherband, then digital audio broadcast (except for HD radio which should be on a separate line further down due to its digital nature. Then, it should follow all analog stations)).

Removing of radio schedules

Concur with Stereorock. Per WP:NOTRADIOGUIDE, and the related WP:NOTTVGUIDE and WP:NOTNEWS, Wikipedia simply does not carry radio or TV program schedules. It isn't a matter of "not being a kpop fan" - program schedules for all types of radio and TV stations and networks should be removed. It's a question of Wikipedia policies and guidelines. Radio stations can carry their own program guides on their own websites. As an encyclopedia, Wikipedia covers notable events as described in reliable sources, mostly third-party sources. We mostly cover past events because notability of current events is often difficult to establish; it is not Wikipedia's job to cover current events that are highly unlikely to be regarded as historically notable. Radio stations' program schedules are generally not notable as Wikipedia defines that term. We don't cover things like tour schedules for performers, either, despite that many of their fans probably wish we would. With rare exceptions, these things simply aren't notable enough. The same btw applies to lists of non-notable on-air personnel. Unless they're notable for something other than "they're an on-air personality" these are basically employee lists, which we don't do. Please read Wikipedia:Navigation_template#Properties, which says that "a navigation template with fewer than a handful of links can easily be replaced by "See also" sections, or relevant Error: no page names specified (help). and Error: no page names specified (help). links within the articles' sections." WYBC-FM

Please don't undo my edit on WYBC-FM. If you look at any of the other radio station articles i.e. WNBC (AM), WCBS-FM, KQV (AM), KABC (AM) etc.. etc.. It DOES NOT and never has included the FCC channel number. Unless you work in broadcasting the FCC channel number actually means nothing to the normal/common person. The channel number still exists, and the stations you mentioned to me are all A.M. stations, which do not have channel numbers, only F.M. stations do. There are several articles around Wikipedia that DO have their associated F.M. channel numbers. Thanks! I looked at the last edit before my initial one, but saw 6 sources, which is how many there are now. Granted, I haven't done a side-by-side comparison. My opinion is this (& it's just my opinion)-the list of bands probably isn't necessary as the AAA format does have some core artists. I am imagining every classic rock station's page saying "WWRX played the Stones, Aerosmith, Led Zepplin,..."; "WFYV-FM played the Stones, Aerosmith, Led Zepplin,..."; there are core artists which AAAs probably all play too, making it redundant. The other thing is saying which bands segued into which other bands reads to me like inside baseball, y'know, or that a fan wrote it. I only put the list there because the source had them. AAA is not one of these formats where every station sounds the same. I've done this for other stations too. WLQB is another station in that area which was considered unique, and listing the bands seemed like a good idea. Also, several Regional Mexican stations. If sources list artists on individual stations, that seems like a good way to say what Regional Mexican is. Another way might be to put what those sources say in the Regional Mexican article. Template:Newport Radio & ITU

Can you explain what you mean by putting a translator in its "proper ITU place" as you have done in Template:Newport Radio? I've always understood that when sorting, numeric characters preceded alpha characters (even in the ASCII table). Here was my answer before. I was using lists from ham radio logbooks but in checking the ITU’s website just now, I see they have it differently on their website [2]. Here was my reply for your benefit. It now appears the one advantage left is that it would put translators (secondary) after the full-power stations (primary). “Sure thing! When I have seen tables of international callsign blocks listed, they have always grouped them starting with AAA-ALZ & not the first numeric group, which would be 2AA-2ZZ. This tells me that the ITU prefers numbers to come after all-letter groups. I will say that I too expect to see numbers before letters preceded letters, but apparently that isn’t the way the ITU sees it & since they are the governing body for international callsign allocations, I was following this method. The other upshot is that the translators, a secondary service, are issued following the full-power stations, in keeping with their secondary status. I hope that helps!”

My source before was the ARRL logbooks. I hadn’t gone to the ITU site, but this morning was the first time I had. I figured the ARRL wouldve gotten it right, or that’s how things used to be listed! Canada templates, FM suffixes

Hey, I noticed your recent edit. It definitely seems you're in the minority in wanting -FM added to every single listing in the template. It is redundant (except when the callsign is for a nested or other rebroadcaster) and I don't see it done in any other Canada templates (or Mexico, which has suffixes on all FM stations; I only know of a couple places I have a suffix in those templates, and they involve AM and FM with the same base call letters). I hardly think removing the suffix as DJSharke did was worth being called "vandalism" and quite honestly think the suffix isn't needed in a list of FM stations. Raymie (talk · contribs), removing the -FM suffix, which all Canadian F.M. stations have, except for VF stations, reads false. If somebody is learning about North American callsigns & comes across a template, they're going to be misled as to what the true callsign is. To me, that is vandalism.

As for templates that have full callsigns, please look at the Newfoundland radio templates, or Toronto (which has them in the HD section, even though the listing by callsign isn't there like in the American templates). The system you want of removing suffixes & just leaving incomplete callsigns creates an inherent issue. Let's say there are 2 radio stations: CGA & CGA-FM. CGA has the base callsign. Putting "CGA" in the F.M. section would create a false impression (think of CHUM-FM/104.5 being called just "CHUM". This isn't accurate as CHUM is on A.M. 1050!) Now, let's say CGA & CGA-FM *both* have F.M. repeaters in the same town: CGA-1-FM & CGA-FM-1. Under your system, they would both be called "CGA-1" & be listed on the F.M. band! That is confusing! Which one relays which station?

What should be done is for all Canadian & Mexican templates to reflect the American ones where stations are listed by frequency only (lowest frequencies first (A.M., then S.W., then F.M., then digital)) & there is a separate section with the callsigns. The fact all the call-signs are in a group called Ottawa FM, it's presumed every one ends with the -FM suffix, something that anybody in the radio industry, or anybody studying the industry would know. The example you give would be a rare situation at best, and anybody truly studying the industry would be able to get clear knowledge from the CRTC itself. This is a Wikipedia template, and having a continuous plague of -FM in 10s of places is not only redundant, as Raymie said, but unneeded.
Why is it presumed that everyone will know the stations have -FM suffixes? The average person won’t.Wikipedia should give the most accurate information &, for example, having 2 “CHUM”s, one AM, one FM, will lead an average person to believe that both stations carry the callsign CHUM, when in fact only the A.M. does! This way there is no ambiguity! As for my example, it shouldn’t matter how rare it may be, it can still happen. Furthermore, to both of you, Toronto is about the only market which separates A.M. & F.M.; just about all others have the bands intermixed. Additionally, I just edited a market (Central Quebec or something like it), which listed “CBF” on 92.7 in Victoriaville; the link went to CBF-FM in Montreal, which this rebroadcaster doesn't even rebroadcast. It is a rebroadcaster of CBF-FM-10!!! Not only was the callsign wrong, but the wikilink was wrong too! There are an estimated 30,000 different varieties of United States banknotes, yet only a fraction of these are represented on Wikimedia Commons in the form of 2D scans. Additionally, Colonial America, the Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, multiple states and territories, communities, and private companies have issued banknotes that are in the public domain today but are absent from Commons.

In the months of November and December, WikiProject Numismatics will be running a cross-wiki upload-a-thon, the 2019 US Banknote Contest. The goal of the contest is to increase the number of US banknote images available to content creators on all Wikimedia projects. Participants will claim points for uploading and importing 2D scans of US banknotes, and at the end of the contest all will receive awards. Because the callsigns listed as such seem to have no rhyme or reason! It is not consistent with all other templates, because there are other templates which list the full callsigns! There is no consistency in this template as stations with -TV suffixes in the callsigns have those suffixes omitted in the template, LPTV stations are listed more or less as they should be, but then subchannels seem to have -DT attached to the base callsigns. This makes no sense! All navboxes should list the FCC-issued callsign and not partial or made-up callsigns! Stereorock (talk) 03:07, 23 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

This comes across as DMY activism. As I said, the U.S. military uses DMY do their articles are written as such, but the rest of American articles (with some possible exceptions that I can’t think of an example at the moment) are MDY because that is the predominant style here in the U.S.. DMY is not nicer: 12/31/99 is nicer than 31/12/99, because the numbers are going up instead of down then up. But, that is all subjective. I have some quite a bit of writing here in the past 14 years, but MDY has been the preferred choice for America-centric articles because of the strong national preference. WSYY-FM Broadcast Day Info

Okay, I agree with you that the Signal Info section of the WSYY-FM article had to go, but I greatly value the mention of the mention of WSYY-FM being one of a few FM stations to not broadcast on a 24-hour schedule, typically being on-the-air for approximately 18⅓ hours per day, 7 days a week (from 4:55AM through 11:15PM ET). I suppose that it's all a matter of perspective whether to view such information as Trivia, but in my mind I view that as valid information. When Radio Was is already mentioned in the Syndicated Programming section, so I suppose there's no need to mention that the first and final hour of WSYY-FM's broadcast day is dedicated to that program, for one could just investigate the airtimes on their website; however, I feel that the station being an unusual, non-24-hour station is definitely a noteworthy fact that's useful and pertinent to the subject of the article (WSYY-FM). I'm striving for diplomacy and am just explaining my view here so that hopefully some common ground can be reached. If I can't leave that breif, 1-sentence exerpt in about WSYY-FM's broadcast schedule, I'd probably just chat about it on Social Media (such as WordPress or Facebook); however, I will state in my defense that there are dozens of Wikipedia articles of Radio Stations mentioning a non-24-hour broadcast schedule, even amidst a lack of mention of it in the station's website. For Example: The article to KQMA, for one. I forgot to mention that I'm a dedicated listener of WSYY-FM and listen to the station a lot, which contributes to my knowledge of how that station does things. Any mention of time for present programming also violates WP:NOTRADIOGUIDE, which states Wikipedia is not an electronic program guide. Your assertion that WSYY-FM is one of the last remaining FM stations to not pros fast 24 hours per day is also original research & trivia. If you could find a 3rd-party source (for example Fybush.com or in a broadcasting trade publication), then it’s no longer original research! Personally speaking as a former broadcaster of 22 years, I find that information interesting & once even visited that station circa 1998 while on a white water rafting trip. Okay, @Stereorock:, I'll do the mature thing and honor your latest edits to the article regarding my current favorite radio station of which I regard myself a dedicated listener to at the moment (WSYY-FM). I'm too young to remember when AM Radio was the primary medium, but I have a real passion for the art of FM Translators being used to "turn AM stations into FM stations," so-to-speak. I will state for the record that the owner of WSYY-FM (who also owns WSYY and WKTJ-FM) is currently working on now websites for all of his stations. If the new & improved website of WSYY-FM features a broadcast schedule where the sign-off and number of hours they spend on the air is mentioned, might I be able to cite that as a source? Three other radio station articles currently remain that I edited to list this trivial data: WVNR/WNYV, WFNY, and WENT. The article for WFNY has already been updated to no longer contain my trivial comments. The article for WENT Radio still contains my mention of the broadcast schedule; however, there is a section within the website of WENT Radio where their broadcast day is listed, including a mention of their sign-off and sign-on times, yet that webpage now appears to be a dead link, at this point If the new website of WSYY Radio were to mention sign-on and sign-off times, might that become a citable source which would allow me to mention the non-24-hour status of WSYY-FM? @Mercy11: Hello Mercy11! My rationale is 2-fold. First, as Puerto Rico is an American commonwealth territory, and not its own country, it counts as “American”. Secondly, per MOS:DATETIES, an American topic (of which anything related to P.R. would be), except the military, gets the MDY date style. I have seen no exception to this rule for Puerto Rico. Microformats

Noticed your edit (Special:Diff/994084656) in the |airdate= field on WCSP-FM. I wanted to make you aware of why we have things formatted like that. It's because {{Infobox radio station}} is designed to work with microformats, which provide machine-parseable metadata on things like start and end dates that can be generated by using {{start date}} or {{end date}}. This isn't possible if you use a straight-up raw link in the |airdate= or |last_airdate= fields of this infobox. So when you see these, don't change them; they're there for a reason. @Neutralhomer:It goes against NOTDIR(4): “Wikipedia is not an online program guide”. It is giving a list of shows & times which said shows air, which is the function of a program guide. If it were to just list only notable shows & why they are notable (won an AP award or an award of repute & not one where the host’s friends were all able to vote for said host to skew the ballot, for example), that would be one thing. Unfortunately, I’ve seen too many instances where NOTDIR(4) has been skirted solely to advertise some show on some station so the host’s ego can be inflated. To my knowledge, no show on WXRK-LP is notable, and putting the times at which they air would go against NOTDIR(4). Also, the sources given were primary sources from WXRK-LP itself. The notability would be from these being locally produced shows at the station itself. Since WXRK-LP is a low-power FM, everything on the station is locally-produced, so the fact that the station has three independently produced, individual-format shows for local bands is kinda unheard of for a small market like Charlottesville. That aside, the weekday schedule is written in such a way that makes it not be in violation of WP:NOT#DIR. That's been established in previous discussions, unless that's been changed, I don't keep up with those changes.
I don't think, though, the weekend shows are to "inflate" "the host's ego". To be honest, those changes were made by me. Now, I listen to the station (I think it's a good station and I like that type of rock music), but I don't know anyone who works at the station nor have I actually communicated with anyone at the station (ie: made a request, etc.). Help with new listing

New user and I am interested in getting a page for either Clarke Broadcasting which owns 3 California radio stations but owned many more in the past and I have details from the current owner about all of them- I have even formatted them into the table that Hubbard Broadcasting's wiki has. The 3 Clarke owned stations have pages but it also owns myMotherLode.com which is cited many times (by Wikipedia) as an online news outlet that doesn't have a wiki page. My info also relates to Cal.net an ISP in California that doesn't have a wiki. Sources are the FCC, news stories, press releases and the owner H. (you may see some drama in the KKBN edits with a past employee, a kernel of truth to it. Still, myMotherLode is a very important news source. Paraguay

The reason I redirected ZPV1 and ZP1 (AM) is twofold.

  • I cannot find information on the specific AM and FM programming, beyond a schedule, that merits separate articles for the two of them. (The FM seems to have hit the air in the mid-90s.)
  • Under no circumstances is call sign titling appropriate for these pages. Paraguay is like Uruguay or Brazil or (mostly) Argentina: every station has a call sign, but in no case that I know of is it a common name. (The call signs appear but are either secondary or historic names, I'm noting, at least for the two AM stations; the FM not so much.)   • @Sammi Brie: I am curious if you saw my entry on each article’s talk page about the facilities being notable per WIKIPEDIA:NRADIO. I am viewing RNdP as the owner, and the callsign-titled articles as about the facilities themselves (this will get extended to a future article about ZP12, which has a different station name than the Asunción stations). It’s like an article for the CBC as a corporate entity and a separate one for CBLA-FM. I’m not sure that CBLA-FM gets mentioned all that much apart from once a day, and even here in the U.S. the station’s moniker is probably more well-known than the callsign (“92 Pro-FM” vs. WPRO-FM, for example), so maybe that policy needs a rethink (I’m in favor of always titling a page by callsign versus the common name). In places where call signs are not normally assigned to broadcast stations, the article title should be the officially registered name of the station, or else the name by which the station most commonly identifies itself (for instance, Voice of Russia or Radio Sawa).” That tells me that callsigns should be used in Paraguay, Brazil, Uruguay, etc.. According to the World Radio Television Handbook, there are some stations that show up as “Radio (callsign)” in Latin America, which means there are stations that do use them (I would agree it’s probably not to the extent that we do in North America, but even here, probably the majority of stations only utter callsigns as required). @Drmies: I am simply trying to uphold Wikipedia’s own policies, including the ones of WP:WPRS. The IP user is trying to advertise the station, in violation of WP:ADVERTISING. It’s more than the format name. Please look at his edits of his other station: WECK which is an utter mess with his self-promotion to see what is trying to be prevented. I have repeatedly asked for page protection of both WECK & WKEY-FM to no avail. Finally, the formats listed are typically those defined by the radio ratings agency Nielsen, which does not recognize Yacht Rock as a separate format. @Wikipedian-in-Waiting: I do feel strongly about this, you are correct! I am just waking up & seeing this, and I noticed you have just joined us a few months ago, so I would like to express welcome! I hope this all comes across with the tone in which I intend. I am a former broadcaster, and have loved radio broadcasting for as long as I can remember. Over the years, there have been a few typographical issues which have gone from mild annoyance to an irritant. One of these is the -AM suffix on individual U.S. & Canadian stations (Mexico does apparently issue the suffix as part of the whole callsign), which is not used. Yes, there are sometimes situations which call for the use to disambiguate the parent A.M. from its daughter F.M. &/or T.V. stations, but neither of WWOM’s daughter stations were mentioned in this article, rendering the need to disambiguate moot. If there had been, however, “(AM)” is the preferred style (it is also the standard for article naming because in the U.S. & Canada, the A.M. always just the base callsign with no suffix issued by their regulators), although if talking about some or all of the stations together as one, that’s the one instance when the -AM suffix isn’t a terrible thing (WWOM-AM-FM-TV, in this case) because it’s understood to be a group and not one station with an incredibly long & convoluted callsign transmitting in 3 modes simultaneously.

I hope this has all come across clearly & concisely as possible! I can’t think of much more to add clearly at this moment (it is now 05:15 local time), other than to thank you for your curiosity for why! Part of what makes the history of KAKC so difficult to parse is the many changes in their frequency and call signs, sometimes even using the call signs of rivals in the same town (you'll note this article used to incorrectly identify the other KAKC in Tulsa as the same as the current KAKC in Tulsa), at times simulcasting FM stations, and being at Ground Zero during the heyday of media consolidation which was really at the root (I think) of why stations were adding suffixes to their call letters.
I was really purposeful in noting each of the changes, including exactly how they represented their call letters, because this has been muddied elsewhere online and it would be nice for the wiki article to provide clear information that matches the citations. I still contend that in this case, your personal irritant doesn't warrant changing the text in this particular article. How print media discussed these stations, and how they represented themselves, during the consolidation decades is part of the history.
For all the nitpicking, the article itself was incorrect or missing most of its historical details for years: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=KAKC&diff=1218613780&oldid=1189038467 I would offer that if you see someone has added a lot of detail to an article, and then asks about a change, replying "Wrong" and reverting it again is not very welcoming. Can I have an explanation of why my edit of WYFQ was totally scrapped? Maybe I made some mistakes. But the station really is located on Carmel Commons Boulevard. That's in a history paragraph that was in Vchimpanzee's previous version and we often put the studio location in the opening paragraphs. It really does have a Christian talk and teaching format. Don't we put the format somewhere in the opening paragraphs?

One of the problems was with the bit about NASCAR races being on WSOC-FM: you added the reason being that country listeners could continue listening on 930, when there was no third-party verification of that, meaning it is speculation on your part & therefore a violation of WP:OR. Secondly, a station’s studios, offices, & transmitter addresses are very likely not encyclopedic, unless one or more are located in a building that is itself of encyclopedic merit (the Empire State Building, for example). Wikipedia isn’t used for a company to conduct business, which is what its offices are. Please refer to WP:NOTPRICE. This would extend to WYFQ’s funding, which would also fall to violate WP:NOTDATABASE, which would also cover many of your other additions (not every sister station’s frequency or channel needs to be included for encyclopedic content).
