Sir or Ma'am,

Would you please consider semi-protecting the Mary Baker Eddy article? This would prevent the un-registered person(s) from this IP, from editing the page.

As I mentioned in my request to have our IP unblocked;

This IP is for all US Army Forces within the country of Kuwait. (About 20,000). It seemed very unfair to block the page for half a year!

I'd like to mention, I did read the entire artice, it's history and talk/discussion page. It's obvious the article has been in heated debate for some considerable time now. I'm sure it will only continue, but semi-protecting the article will, as you know, force anyone whom wants to edit to register -- and be held personally accountable.

No, semi-protection is for protection against vandalism from multiple addresses. I am not semi-protecting to deal with a single IP, that would shut out every other IP editor in the world. I advise you to register an account, because if vandalism comes from that IP again I will block it for even longer. I expect better discipline from members of the military, you represent your country while you are abroad. I have no connection with the Mary Baker Eddy page other than admistrative action to deal with vandalism. I have no point of view on the article and don't care about her or what she stands for in the least. I have not accused you personally of anything, in fact I am rather assuming good faith by advising you to open an account. If I was assuming you were a vandal I would not have done that. Bacon WikiCup - Participant Interview Week 3

Spinningspark as the greatest gainer and current leader of points in week 3 of the Bacon WikiCup 2010, can you give us some feedback about how the Bacon Challenge has being going from your point of view?

1. Before you exceeded 61 points did you think that you would end up holding the lead at the end of the week by 15?

I had no idea, I was just concentrating on the next piece of work and maybe just overtaking the next person in front of me. It started off quite slowly, with a lot of work going into the first few articles. I knew I was going to move up the table if I kept plugging away at it but I really did not think I would get in the lead. Without doubt, the large number of redirects that were generated by Guinea hog (and it is sooo difficult not to type Guinea pig!) have given me a lot of points, but that was not planned in advance, the redirects really only came up as the article was being written. I think maybe next year (if there is a next year) you should think about a scoring system that is more proportional to the amount of work actually done in an article. Redirects do not take a lot of effort and I don't really feel I deserved all those points. On the other hand Flitch (bacon) was a lot of work. It could easily be divided into three DYK qualifying articles and get three times the points if I felt so inclined, and if I really tried I could possibly get five. So overall, I have probably got the right number of points for the work I have done, but the system could still do with some tweaking for next time.

2. There have been plenty of articles written by many participants. Which of these articles have you found the most interesting and why?

I am going to have to own up that I have not read most of them, so apologies in advance to anyone who has written a brilliant article and I haven't mentioned it. I enjoyed Bacon on The Simpsons but sadly, it looks like it is going to get deleted.

3. Have any pictures uploaded from other editors interested you?

Oh yes, User:Glane23 has come up with a brilliant collection of pictures which went some way to getting me interested in this project. Vegan Bacon maple french toast cupcakes is just so wrong in so many different ways you would have to write a whole article to explain it. Has someone written an article by the way? If not, why not?

4. You have some images ready, but will not be uploaded yet due to image policies. Are there currently any other pictures that you have ready, but will be held back at a later date for the same reason?

By and large I try not to have much to do with "fair use" images, but in the case of company logo's that is really the only way they can be used. There are two articles I have written on companies, Danish Bacon and Bio-blend Fuels, that I will upload logos for when they go live. Actually, Bio-blend gave me permission to use their logo with a free licence but I am fairly confident that they don't know what they are doing when it comes to copyright and don't understand the consequences of that so I will upload it as fair use anyway to protect their interests. Other than that, I have written to a number of organisations asking for images and will upload them as soon as I get any results. Nothing definite promised, but the chance of a Wikipedia entry is usually a good incentive for companies to cooperate.

5. What are your thoughts about Bacon in general; As a food, as a fuel etc.?

I love bacon, but I don't usually it eat it very often. That is, until I started on this project when the constant talking about it seemed to start a strange craving in me and I am currently buying a pack or two every day. I buy it from my local corner shop (convenience store) where the owner probably thinks I have gone barmy. He is Muslim and picks up the packs by the corners with his fingertips as he puts them in the bag as if they were coated in acid (please don't try and make me feel guilty about this - no one is making him sell it!). As a fuel? well never tried it, but I wrote an article!. Or did you mean as fuel for humans? I just checked out that article after linking it and it doesn't mention bacon, someone should get over there and fix it.

By the way, your interview is up on the Bacon WikiCup page. Although, I've cut two questions from each interview so far, including yours for reasons relating to length. I also accept your critism of the point system. To be honest, the point system wasn't exactly easy to put together because of how many different means of contributing there are (eg. create an article, contribute to an article, have a DYK nom, upload a picture, create a redirect, create a template, create a stub template, copy-edit...the list is virtually continuous). However, funnily enough I've actually felt similar about everyone's points to the way that you've felt about your own. Although I feel some of the point values of certain contributions to the WikiCup may not perfectly seem to reflect the amount of work involved for that individual contribution (eg. six redirects scores more than an article or "extra work" on an article doesn't necessarily earn you more points), I am happy at this moment that everyone is more or less on the amount of points that they should be on, so overall, like your points, I think everyone's balance out evenly.

I don't know if we will be doing another event next time, but if we do, then, your right, the point system will need looking at, (assuming that we even have another Bacon WikiCup at all). But as you can see with the large amount of "bonus points" handed out, there are so many ways that editors can contribute (someone created a new admin type for the Bacon challenge!) that the system, in its entirety, is quite complex.

As I've been typing this I've just had an idea. For now, we'll keep using the points system until the final day and then what I could do is assess every editors reported contributions and then make a fair judgement based on what is in each editor's section on the reporting page as to whom is most deserving of the Bacon WikiCup, regardless of the points, although the points table could be "added weighting" to my making of the decision. Thanks. Someone still needs to take a look at the business section and figure out if "run-around" is really a recognised business term with that meaning. Obviously, the scenario really happens, but whether business really has a name for, that name is "run-around" or "circular reference" and it is recognised that businesses do it as a matter of deliberate policy is all OR at the moment. Mechanical filter and Henry Cavendish

File:Cavendish-portrait.jpg is renamed - asked a Commons admin I know, but posting to commons:Commons:Administrators' noticeboard was another way I've been told. Please take your time with wire materials in Mechanical filter. It is somewhat unfair to pick up things which interest me, but I can't help it. I agree that magnetostriction is the reason, and thermal arguments are minor (if important at all, though my experience with microwave resonators is such that even minor issues are important at high Q, as various thermal dependences affect the drift of resonance frequency). My pushing this issue is aimed to explain why magnetostriction is important in resonator design, and what other materials are used when magnetostrictive properties are not needed; not to have a detailed review on that though. Re: Humboldt Current

Hi. Thanks for the information. I am currently looking at the global sea surface temperature maps, and it appears that the Humboldt Current is very close to getting cut off in Chile, in an area south of the most intense part of the cold current (off the coast of Peru-Chile), as winds are driving the current El Nino pool southeast toward the coast of Chile, as well as in other directions. This is likely to wreak havoc on weather patterns, so I posted the question asking for more research on this topic. Thanks. ~A H 1^(TCU) 18:24, 3 January 2010 (UTC)

Questions again Sparky

Questions: re: uploads to Commons. When I upload photos of musicians and they are from a well-known group like Blind Faith, or are celebrities like Steve Winwood or Jack Bruce, and the Category doesn't exist yet, I end up getting stuck putting them into Cat.s like "Bass guitarists from the United Kingdom", or "Cat:Multi-instrumentalists" or other places where they are lost to others. How can I begin a Category on Commons for Cream, or Blind Faith, or other bands or musicians when I know there are more photos either coming soon for them, or there are some that already exist in Commons (as in the case of early Jeff Beck photos I uploaded long before there was a Cat:Yardbirds.? Thanks! You are the only editor/Admin/person who has consistently explained things to me here. My problems are these:

To create a subcategory for Martin Barre, for example, the main Cat. is Jethro Tull. The only subcategory is Ian Anderson. When I click edit, there's no way to add a subcategory I can see. Just the three main Categories that Jethro Tull belong in.
What about a great musician like Richard Thompson, who is filed under Cat:Musicians? TOO broad!
HOW can I start a Category for Blind Faith, Cream, Traffic, since the only musician from any of those notable bands is Eric Clapton, who has his own Category, and most of the others were never in the Yardbirds.
Worse, new bands with no real ties I see. try the Afro-Celt Sound System for example. This is music from Guiana mixed with Celt music and Rap music!

My request-- would you take one case- how about Blind Faith, and show me step by step to create a Category for it's members like you've done before to show me how to upload photos a couple of years or so ago? Steve Winwood was in Traffic-- I have a few photos on his article that are probably lost in Commons somewhere. As I said, it's not working. Click the last photo for Martin Barre, go to the Jethro Tull Category, click edit, and see if YOU can figure out how to get anything in there as a subcategory. I'm just lost. I'll keep piling up unusable photos there to anyone but myself, I suppose, since the Admins there love to brag and offer help here for Commons but they never come through, except to refuse some uploads because they look TOO professional, or whatever. Nobody really explains anything I can grasp there. My ADD might be partially to blame, but now I understand why nearly nobody here wants to mess with Commons. Even User:Tvoz- who has a lot more experience has no idea what ORTIS means! Oh well, sometimes, I just can't get over the fact that I'm not as bright as the average bear. Not your problem. Sorry for scooping you, but I did post on the Bacon Challenge page that I was working on it, which should stop that sort of thing happening. You have some good stuff in there, especially the fat sensing robot, which could be incorporated. I will put it on my list but I am short of time right now and it amy be a while. Can you help slice this?

I can not find a photo of Sterling Campbell, most recently drummer in David Bowie's backing band. The best I could do, was this photo here in Commons: [3] Is there a way you can slice it so the drummer is visable and there's something that can be used in his infobox to identify him? I guess if David Bowie is in it, that won't matter, but I really knocked myself out just to try to get this pic of Campbell! At your leisure of course!
