WikiCup 2011 July newsletter![]() The finals are upon us; we're down to the last few. One of the eight remaining contestants will be this year's WikiCup champion! 150 was the score needed to progress to the final; just under double the 76 required to reach round 4, and more than triple the 41 required to reach round 3. Our eight finalists are:
We say goodbye to our seven other semi-finalists, In other news, preparations for next year's competition have begun with a brainstorming thread. Please, feel free to drop by and share any thoughts you have about how the competition should work next year. Sign ups are not yet open, but will be opened in due course. Watch this space. Further, there has been a discussion about the rule whereby those in the WikiCup must delcare their participation when nominating articles at featured article candidates. This has resulted in a bot being created by new featured article delegate Ucucha (talk · contribs). The bot will leave a message on FAC pages if the nominator is a participant in the WikiCup. A reminder of the rules: any points scored after August 29 may be claimed for the final round, and please remember to update submission pages promptly. If you are concerned that your nomination, be it at good article candidates, a featured process or anywhere else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages, or by email. Good luck! AV-8B things to checkHi Phil. In the last line of this edit, HJ has asked for checks of a few things he's changed. The changes needing checks are marked in his edit summaries in the history of the article. They all look fine to me, in that I think what he's changed them to are indeed the meaning intended, but I wanted someone more familiar with the material to check them over as well. Aviation articlesI'm frustrated too ... I see a lot of activity in aviation articles, but we're kind of stuck until we get more aviation people working on each other's articles, and that just doesn't seem to be happening in Milhist's A-class review. You asked me to ask people to get moving ... but I've found that doesn't work well on Wikipedia; people get interested when they get interested, so the only things that seem to work well around here are hard work and patience. My two cents is: try putting some of your articles up at Aviation's A-class review (and I'll help with reviews), and try helping other aviation people out with their articles, for instance, articles that are up for GAN ... that might inspire them to help you out. - Dank (push to talk) 14:28, 14 September 2011 (UTC) RE: Article creationsHello. The minor planet articles are listed by the hundred and groups of ten of them are concatenated into longer lists. As to their notability, outside of potentially hazardous and trans-Neptunian objects, most smaller minor planets, particularly those of the main belt, are, I agree, not of great importance. Many are technically unremarkable yet still have received names; the names are arbitrary designations which make reference easier. The names are also primarily up to the whims of the discoverer(s). Hi, I feel like I'm fighting a war with bots here - and they wonder why newbies are leaving in droves! The two articles have entirely different scopes - the (suburb) one is focused on one small bit (in geographic terms) and has a decidedly more local focus, whilst the main article is focused on the whole thing. I'd actually written this on the talk page before you went through. This is becoming increasingly standard for places in Australia - eg Perth, Western Australia and Perth (suburb). The situation's been rectified now but could you please look at the settings for whatever tool you're using to identify these things - I mean, it doesn't bother me all too much as a going-on-6-year editor, but it would probably stop newbies from wanting to contribute. It's bad form to ask five questions at a single RfA. We're not testing candidates over every single little detail. Not to mention that your questions are vague in what they're asking for. Are you going to oppose if they disagree with you on Q10, or if they don't write down every single mental process in Q9? Q12 is especially misleading—do you want them to say histmerge because they read it as a copy-paste move, or did you mean that it was copied from an external source? If you want to ask questions at RfA, please limit yourself to the one or two most important ones and ensure that you are wording them well. That is, unless you want to trip up the candidate, in which case, just don't bother asking questions at all. /ƒETCHCOMMS/ 19:05, 18 September 2011 (UTC)

If you read the article you will see that it cites two eminent sources, one of which states (as quoted) that King was one of the ten best players of his day in the 1750s. That underlines his notability. If you have doubts about the sources, and this applies to other projects also, I suggest you raise a question on the WikiProject talk page before turning to the deletion process. ----Jack | talk page 18:10, 23 September 2011 (UTC) The Signpost: 26 September 2011

KC-10Responded on my talk page and also wanted to note that I have looked over the article. It may sound strange, but I have always made it a point NOT to look too much into the KC-10 article before because I always knew that if I did, I would want to work on it (regardless of whether or not I actually had time to.) It definitely needs some work, but I'm too tired tonight to really quantify that thought. First thing that DOES pop out is the "incidents" section which I have already boldly removed. The KC-10 has had a very accident-free track record, but even if it didn't, I don't see the need for such a section. We don't have an "incidents" section for the Honda Accord for every time someone dies behind the wheel of one. Unless there is a VERY notable reason why the aircraft itself, through a reason such as design flaw, contributed to someone's death, I fail to see a reason to specifically examine it within the article. I will look at it some more tomorrow. Trusilver 06:53, 29 September 2011 (UTC)

ACR closureHi mate, hope you don't mind me stalking, great you're getting into this duty, especially when it's with one of my noms... ;-) Just a few things:
All the above are in the collapsible section A-Class review/reappraisal closure instructions for coordinators on the A-Class review page. I've been doing this for yonks, and still find it best to have those instructions open on a spare tab for reference while I perform the steps. BTW, got a feeling you may not have put a result or signed another ACR you closed (perhaps closed w/o consensus) not long ago but I forgot to mention it at the time, so you might want to check back and add the result and fake the signature timestamp to when you actually closed it... TaggingHi Sp33dyphil, I appreciate your vigilance, but in general before tagging to death an article minutes after birth, please allow at least a few days for the author(s) to develop it. Benevolo is one of the most notable architectural and urban historians of the 20th century, and has articles on five other Wikipedias. In my limited time I was simply starting to close a gap in Wikipedia's coverage bias. I'm afraid that this kind of quick tagging discourages contributions. --Elekhh (talk) 23:26, 6 October 2011 (UTC) (talk page stalker)An article that is going to take 'a few days' to develop should be developed in user space where it will avoid the danger of being deleted, and this is what we should be encouraging users to do. . The number of new articles that might get developed, is so great that there is a risk that not tagging them will leave them forgotten, and undeveloped by their author. Common sense will tell us on a case-by-case basis if we should wait 15 minutes oe 1 hour before tagging an A1 or an A3, or even delete them instantly. Other tags, if applied quickly enough, may draw the creator's attention to the problems (as it did with Elekhh) while they are still online and logged in. --Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 01:05, 7 October 2011 (UTC)

Sp33dyphil "Ad astra" 05:19, 7 October 2011 (UTC) Incidentally, with exactly fifty articles created, Elekhh might well be a good choice to have the autopatrolled userright. Welcome to the Wikipedia Ambassador ProgramHi Sp33dyphil! Congratulations! Your application to join the Global Education Program as an Online Ambassador has been accepted. The steps you need to take now, a few things you need to read, are bolded. When you get a chance, please add your username to the official list of Online Ambassadors and add a profile for yourself here (which helps match Online Ambassadors with classes in their areas of interest). Here are some things you should know to help you get started: The role of the Online AmbassadorThe main role of for an Online Ambassador is to join the "pod" for one or more participating classes. The pod is the team of people helping a class of students contribute effectively to Wikipedia, consisting of the course instructor, the local Campus Ambassadors who will work with the class in person, the Online Ambassadors who work with the class online, and the Regional Ambassador for the pod who will check in periodically with the pod to make sure everything is going well. A prototypical pod might look something like this:
(That's an idealization, but it gives you an idea of the spectrum of people in each of the roles in the program.) The expections for an Online Ambassador in a pod (and what you can expect from other pod members) are laid out in the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between pod members. In short the role of the Online Ambassador is to:
To join a pod, go to the MOU signup page, which lists the courses for the current term, and leave your signature in one of the Online Ambassador slots for the pod you want to join. You can also help as an Online Ambassador outside of your role as a pod member, anywhere you see students who could use help. Feedback on the substance (rather than style and formatting) of student articles, in particular, is always a need. If you use IRC, please consider adding #wikipedia-en-ambassadors and #wikipedia-en-classroom to your channel lineup. The latter is the main help channel for the program, where students and instructors come from time to time in search of live help. Wikipedia Ambassadors are expected to follow the Wikipedia Ambassadors Principles. Please review them. Communication channelsThere are three main places for news, updates and discussion about Wikipedia Ambassadors and the Global Education Program:
Newsletters about the program, or messages for Online Ambassadors particularly, may be delivered to your talk page on occasion. Thanks for volunteering as a Wikipedia Ambassador! Play Misty For MeHi Sp33dyphil. I recently finished correcting the formatting of several citations on the Play Misty for Me article. In doing so, I included in the citations all of the relevant information pertaining to the sources (books). There is also a section in the article titled Bibliography which has the same information about those books. After completing all of the work on fixing the citations I decided to remove the Bibliography section because, after my work, the reference section included all of the same information. However, right after I finished this work, you undid all of it, and sent a message to me saying I removed content without specifying a reason. When in fact I entered this, "removed Bibliography sections as it is unnecessary now that citations are correct" as the reason. If you think that the Bibliography section needs to stay, then it can stay. But can you at least revert the page back to where all of my work on the citations is done? Best, DaffyBridge (talk) 00:21, 15 October 2011 (UTC)

I've left a message on their talk page asking them about maybe finding a cached copy of this site instead of simply deleting it wholesale. The last two times he's deleted something I've left edit summaries asking him to do so and to check his talk page. I'm hoping he sees it soon, because if he doesn't, I'm tempted to start reporting his edits as being disruptive. --McDoobAU93 00:32, 16 October 2011 (UTC) WarningsYou've templated me twice--have you read my edit summaries or looked at the edit history to which I've referred? It looks like you have been busy doing good things by patrolling for vandalism, but I fear that your reverts at Commoditization are having the effect of fanning the flames in a content dispute. The user you have been reverting has been explaining his/her edits in edit summaries. The problem is that they need to discuss the matter on the talk page instead. Please restrain yourself there -- and encourage talk page discussion. Thanks! --Orlady (talk) 04:43, 16 October 2011 (UTC)

Parallax PropellerI think your complete removal of material posted by user:173.13.137.221 was a bit hasty. In principle his edits were fine! At most you could have placed a few [citation needed] tags. What he wrote however was factually correct, and already covered by the given links, it certainly wasn't vandalism. I have asked the user to register, become aquainted to the rules and regulations of WP, and then try again. Mahjongg (talk) 13:07, 16 October 2011 (UTC)

Your GA nomination of Tupolev Tu-142Hello, I just wanted to introduce myself and let you know I am glad to be reviewing the article Tupolev Tu-142 you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria. Re:FAC stallingThere's not really too much which can be done. Try adding it to User:Tony1/FAR urgents and Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and ask on the appropriate WikiProject talk page- this may bring in some reviews. As you probably realise, it's not going to pass as it is now. I'd promise to review myself, but I can really only find stolen moments on Wikipedia at the moment; I've found myself very busy. helloI do not understand why you said i removed content. I added several colons whidh needed to be added. I added italic to the show The Five which I believe is needed also. I did move one segment (art auction) which is no longer daily because people started to win bids for the drawings and then not send in the money, so the show stopped doing that segment. Did you not see that I only moved this segment and did not remove the content? They complained on the show about people winning the bid but not paying, so they then stopped having the art auctions. I did remove the one word "progressive" from in front of Media Matters and the bolding that was placed on Media Matters because that much detail along with the footnote and unneeded bolding seemed to be promoting media matters on the Red Eye page for unknown reasons. I don't think it is necessary to go into that much detail about media matters on Red Eye page, when simply saying Memdia Matters will do for encyclopedia purposes on Red Eye, don't you agree? Is that the content you were referring to that I removed, the single word "progressive"? If that's the removed content you are referring to, then why did you get rid of all my many other helpful edits I made to improve the page, including 3 references which I added with great trouble? Couldn't you have left my helpful edits and just reinserted the one word "progressive" if you wanted that unnecessary qualifier to stay there? Or do you consider all these other edits not helpful to the page either? As far as I can see, there are lots of edits made all over the place with some actually removing real content without any comment about the edit as to why they did that edit and they are not changed they way you did to me? Please explain.--172.162.22.221 (talk) 07:26, 28 October 2011 (UTC)

A Message From WikiProject: Barnstar AwardingHello, I am writing from WikiProject Barnstar Awarding. As a member of the project, I thought you may be interested in one of our new feature - a live news feed. Formally, any project news was displayed on the project page and any important messages (like this one) had to be idividualy delivered. We now, however, have a new feature - a news feed. The way this works is by the project having a news page (which can be found here). Users then place the following on their talk page {{Wikipedia:WikiProject Barnstar Awarding/News}} News will then be updated on your talk page (or anywhere else you decided to place this template). Please note that the new messages template will not be shown as news is updated.

The stable version template is used to mark a stable version of the article, as a measure that combats edit rot, the deterioration of formerly good articles after they stop being supported, and is as well an option for people to access a version of the page that is less likely to be plagued by vandalism and other problems. Feel free to check it out on the template page. This does not change how the article itself is viewed or edited, and as the article evolves and things change, the stable version may of course be updated by simply replacing the permanent link in the template (it is stable, but not fixed). GOCE template issue... maybeI could be wrong, but based on User talk:Crisco 1492, I think there may be an issue with template:GOCEtb. I was scrolling down the page and noticed that you seemed to have placed this template on his page out of chronological order, because it was dated for today but up with November's posts. So I checked the history and you're not in it for today. I check the template again, thinking I'm missing something, and notice both your post and mine (each using this template) have the same time stamp. It's gotta be one of three things: 1) A bug in the template, 2) A bug in my browser, 3) A bug in my brain. Can you check and see if it's rendering the same for you? Thanks, ❇Zoë Alkaia ❇ 05:49, 30 December 2011 (UTC) Okay, I figured out the problem. The template code includes template:Currentdate, so every time a page the template is posted to is loaded or purged, it updates with the current date and time. I'm not sure if I can fix it; templates have never been my thing. ❇Zoë Alkaia ❇ 05:57, 30 December 2011 (UTC)

Welcome to the 2012 WikiCupHello, and welcome to the 2012 WikiCup! The competition officially begins at the start of 2012 (UTC) after which time you may begin to claim points. Your submission page, where you must note any content for which you wish to claim points, can be found here, and formatting instructions can be found in hidden comments on the page. A bot will then update the main table, which can be seen on the WikiCup page. The full rules for what will and will not be awarded points can be found at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring. There's also a section on that page listing the changes that have been made to the rules this year, so that experienced participants can get up-to-date in a few seconds. One point of which we must remind everyone; you may only claim points for content upon which you have done significant work, and which you have nominated, in 2012. For instance, articles written or good article reviews started in 2011 are not eligible for points. This round will last until late February, and signups will remain open until the middle of February. If you know of anyone who may like to take part, please let them know about the comeptition; the more the merrier! At the end of this round, the top 64 scorers will progress to the next round, where their scores will reset, and they will be split into pools. Note that, by default, you have been added to our newsletter list; we will be in contact at the end of every month with news. You're welcome to remove yourself from this list if you do not wish to hear from us. Conversely, those interested in following the competition are more than welcome to add themselves to the list. Please direct any questions towards the judges, or on the WikiCup talk page. Good luck! Quick questionHey Sp33dy. You seem to be the go-to guy for the aviation project, and I was wondering if you think the article Valentich disappearance falls under the project's scope (it's essentially an aircraft disappearance/disaster). I'm thinking of polishing it up for GA and A-Class reviews in the future and I'd like to know if it belongs to a project with serious members, since sourcing is likely to be contentious and pretty out-there, and it's probably going to need stern assessing in light of that. And congrats on T2, by the way! Probably my third favourite 90s film with Robert Patrick playing a bad guy opposite a huge action star (that maybe doesn't say much). Casliber (talk · contribs) 00:04, 31 January 2012 (UTC) WikiCup 2012 January newsletter![]() WikiCup 2012 is off to a flying start. At the time of writing, we have 112 contestants; comparable to last year, but slightly fewer than 2010. Signups will remain open for another week, after which time they will be closed for this year. Our currrent far-away leader is The 64 highest scoring participants will advance to round 2 in a month's time. There, they will be split into eight random groups of eight. The score needed to reach the next round is not at all clear; last year, 8 points guaranteed a place. The year before, 20. A few participants and their work warrant a mention for achieving "firsts" in this competition.
We are yet to see any featured lists, featured topics or good topics, but this is unsurprising; firstly, the nomination processes with each of these can take some time, and, secondly, it can take a considerable amount of time to work content to this level. In a similar vein, we have seen only one featured article. The requirement that content must have been worked on this year to be eligible means that we did not expect to see these at the start of the competition. No points have been claimed for featured portals or pictures, but these are not content types which are often claimed; the former has never made a big impact on the WikiCup, while the latter has not done so since 2009's competition. A quick rules clarification before the regular notices: If you are concerned that another user is claiming points inappropriately, please contact a judge to take a look at the article. Competitors policing one another can create a bad atmosphere, and may lead to inconsistencies and mistakes. Rest assured that we, the judges, are making an effort to check submissions, but it is possible that we will miss something. On a loosely related note: If you are concerned that your nomination, be it at good article candidates, a featured process or anywhere else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Good luck! Congratulations!"The Military history A-Class medal" from EyeSerene 474765006 Online Ambassador, Spring 2012Hi, Philip! As you probably know, the Wikipedia Education Program has instilled a new set of standards that courses must meet to officially join the program for the semester. As you can see, one of the requirements is that at least one ambassador or professor is a Wikipedian, as this should give students more access to helpful information about contributing to Wikipedia and creating good content. You are listed on the Online Ambassador page; are you still interested in remaining active this semester? Some of these classes will have to remove themselves from the program should they fail to meet these standards, but we would like to ensure that new students are receiving proper support during the editing process. Please let me know if you are still interested in mentoring these students this semester and/or visit the Online Ambassador talk page to select a course that still needs an Online Ambassador. However I did have one turned down, which was List of San Marino national football team results. The reason for that failure was because the reviewer decided that the prose portion of it mirrored information already available on other articles and therefore wasn't "new" to fulfill the DYK requirements. I think that's the key point, is that you need to make sure that the prose is unique (or from a unique angle compared to the other articles). Nothing can happen until you or someone else replies to what I've written so that it's clear what the next step is to be. Thank you. Marrante (talk) 22:27, 18 February 2012 (UTC)

The Bugle is published by the Military history WikiProject. To receive it on your talk page, please join the project or sign up here. Disambiguation link notificationHi. When you recently edited McDonnell Douglas F-15E Strike Eagle, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Stealth (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject. In case of Turhan Bey promotion to GA level User:Cplakidas did most of the job so I am glad that you did not forget him. All the best.--Antidiskriminator (talk) 07:52, 24 February 2012 (UTC) Molde FK leadHi there. In response to your copy-edit of Molde FK and the converse we had about it in January, I have now expanded the lead of Molde FK. Would be thrilled if you could take a look at the new lead. Thank you, in advance. Mentoz86 (talk) 15:25, 24 February 2012 (UTC)
Re:List of Sturgeon class submarinesI've moved List of Sturgeon class submarines's DYK nomination back to the listing so you can put the image up there now. Miyagawa (talk) 22:41, 24 February 2012 (UTC)
BarnstarHello Sp33dyphil. Thanks a lot for the barnstar, it is much appreciated (and a great motivation to carry on editing!) - Dumelow (talk) 07:33, 25 February 2012 (UTC) A barnstar for you!"The Original Barnstar" from Pine 478739326 Thank you so much. Obviously I wasn't expecting it :) It helped get me up during my psychological slump. --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 09:48, 25 February 2012 (UTC) Russian submarine St PetersburgTake a look at the Leningrad Naval Base article, and remember that article is old-ish, so the submarine may have been resubordinated from the under-construction and repair brigade it was assigned to. The DYK project (nominate) 01:37, 29 February 2012 (UTC) Just as an FYI...I've nominated Ashleigh Southern and Victoria Brown (water polo) for Good Article. As you helped contribute to them for a DYK nomination, I thought you might be interested in that bit. (especially if you can edit enough to help get GA credit.) If you can help improve it some more, that would also be greatly appreciated. :) (I've also nominated Kelsey Wakefield and Zoe Arancini from the same set for GA but you didn't work on those two. Still, any help improving it would be appreciated.) --LauraHale (talk) 12:20, 29 February 2012 (UTC) |
