Hello and happy holidays!
I see you are involved in copyright issues and I had a quick question I wasn't sure where to ask.
For copyrighted journal articles, would it be fair use to recreate one of their graphs, using the data in supplemental methods? It wouldn't be exactly same, it'd use different colors for example. Bogazicili (talk) 16:43, 25 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. Did you have a chance to look into this?
To provide more information, this is the graph I am going to request in Wikipedia:Graphics Lab/Illustration workshop: Figure S4 from The Genomic History of the Bronze Age Southern Levant. I want only the graphs in the bottom, confidence intervals are too much. PHCP can be in the left, while LINADMIX can be in the right. The color scheme would also be different. The image would be different than in the journal article, but it would use the results they gave. What would be the licence of this if it's created by someone in Wikipedia:Graphics Lab? - I'm so sorry about the late response; things got quite hectic for me. I want to say it's fine since the US does not have data copyright, but it wouldn't be a bad idea to double check at the media copyright questions board for a second opinion. - (talk page watcher) Data (facts) cannot be copyrighted, but the expression or representation of the facts can be copyrighted. In order to be copyrightable, that expression needs have some creative elements (exceed the threshold of originality). So simple graphs which exhibit no creative elements are not copyrightable. If those graphs use bog standard representations of the data, then they would not be copyrighted, and you could upload them with the license {{PD-simple}}. -- Whpq (talk) 04:28, 10 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
- Thank you so much for the answers. I appreciate it. The shown graphs are not standard representations. PHCP estimation was developed by the authors of the above paper. Linadmix is also an estimation tool, and the previous paper linked from above paper has also full copyright [1]. From the above answer I am seeing reproducing the graphs would be a copyright issue, so I am just going to drop this. Bogazicili (talk) 16:40, 12 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, Sennecaster! I noticed you recently revdelled some content from various "List of Hollyoaks characters introduced in year" removed by User:Burberry47, citing unattributed fandom content. I have restored some of the text, and added attribution where necessary, and was planning on doing the same for the 1999 and 2000 lists. - Have done so, ARandomName123. The context behind this is at WP:CCI at the request from VRT, where I was requested by the agent to revdelete everything (including the versions after restoration but before attribution, which have to go in separate edits), so please ping me again when you finish the attributions.
