I Need Help:

1) I still need for someone to send me the deleted text on Eric Enderton, so I can figure out what I did wrong on that entry.

2) I get the impression that I can create sub-pages for my user pages that will allow me to create rough drafts for my articles. Can someone tell me how to do that?

1. Check the page log for the article Eric enderton and ask the administrator who deleted the page to send you the text. If you just ask here, the administrator is unlikely to see your request.
2. You create a user subpage the same way you create any other page. Just create a page with the format User:Scooge/insert subpage title here and create the page. See wp:Subpages#How to create user subpages for more detailed instructions.

Also, you can use the template {{helpme}} to ask for help on your user talk page in the future. I only noticed this because I watchlisted your user page after discussing the David Linden article. Pyrospirit (talk · contribs) 01:51, 17 June 2008 (UTC)

Deleting an Entry I Created

You can tag the page with {{db-author}}. You can only do this if you are the author of all substantial content on the page.

Oh, and just so you know, you haven't actually placed the template {{helpme}} on the page here; the template {{tl}} is more of a method of quoting a template without actually using it. The actual code you'd want to use is {{helpme}}. (In this case, you want to copy it from the page, not from the edit window.) See Help:Template for information on how to use templates. Still Can't Add Photo to David Linden Article

I took the photo, and I'm willing to release the copyright--which I think I did clearly this time. Then I added it, but the pic was too big, so I had someone whose p-shop-fu was far better than mine downsize the image.

And I THOUGHT I got the code correct for adding the pic, but I tried twice and all I seem to have now is two links on the "David Linden" page that (1) aren't pictures, and (2) don't lead to pictures.

So, What Are All Those Little Figures Doing on my Watchlist?

Do they reflect how many hits the page in question has been getting in some specific period of time? I certainly hope they do not reflect how many times I HAVE ACCESSED a given page, because if that is so, I must really get a life, and fast.

It's those little numerals in parens after the pages ( +146; +78; -1; +277) that I can't quite figure out.

Good guesses. :) They're the number of bytes added or removed in a given edit (which generally relates to the amount of text added/removed). Green numbers: text added; red numbers: text removed. For instance, what does the term "snow" mean in Wiki-talk? Other than, "I sense that I'm winning this debate, so I guess I'll go score some cocaine"? (j/k--but I would like to follow the discussions the grownups are having . . .)

Snow means that the debate doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell of (insert unlikely outcome here) see WP:SNOW. There is a slang dictionary somewhere, offhand, I can't remember. Leaving helpme template up so someone can help us with that one. –xenocidic (talk) 21:41, 4 July 2008 (UTC)

Easy. There is a list of "Cleanup Templates". You need only copy and paste the template text where appropriate. You are free to use any yourself, if you are working hard on an article and don't want people changing things in the mean time (too much), this:

Eric Enderton

I noticed your edit summary upon posting this article. Though the article is certainly in need of inline citations, there's no problem with its present state that you should worry about posting it too early. However, are you aware of subpages? If you want to save a page like this and not have it be "live" yet, all you need to do is create a link on your user or talk page with a forward slash preceding it, post your content there, save, and work on it at your leisure. For example, /Eric Enderton is a link to a subpage of this page called User talk:Scooge/Eric Enderton. When you want to go live, you have your choice of copying and pasting the content to the proper name, or you can move it, which results in all of your edits to the page being retained in the edit history. I have worked on articles for months before going live. It's also a great way to allow yourself the breathing room to take a fully formed article to WP:DYK. Thanks for uploading Image:Sloh5.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. Copyright Issues: Photo

I've had a few photos I uploaded tagged as not sufficiently sourced. A few of these are ones I've taken myself, so that is easy enough to fix. But what is the designation/procedure if the pic is a snapshot taken by a colleague who has given me permission to post the image to Wikipedia, and is aware that Wikipedia photos are sometimes reproduced widely beyond Wikipedia itself? As I understand it, that is a Creative Commons license, too. But do I need to give the name of the associate who took the snapshot? In some cases, the person may be fine with having the pic reproduced, but not want his name on it--particularly when the person is a serious photographer, but the image is from his "discard" pile. Please advise.

You may, in fact, simply state that your friend has snapped the photo and agreed to license it under the said license. If your friend does not wish to be named, that's fine; don't name him. In this case, the best license may be commons:template:cc-pd, which doesn't exist here yet.

Of course, it's important to make sure your friend actually did release the image under such a license. There is a special place in Hell for people who lie about licenses on Wikipedia (I am, of course, kidding, but I have seen people fudge licenses before).

Users don't get automatic notifications if their User: page is edited, but as you can hopefully see, if you edit their discussion pages, they get such notifications =) Anyhow, I'm a little bit confused about your request; it seems that Eric Enderton article has not, in fact, been deleted at all (at least I can't find any deleted revisions of the page and there's no log entry). You may have been experiencing technical problems such as database lag or replication problems. Feel free to contact me if there's some other things that need undeletion. Unsure how to proceed on this--I wrote an entry on a controversial Los Angeles-area preacher who had run a cult-like church, and whose church is still recruiting using questionable methods. I'm in touch with dozens of people who feel that this man has ruined their lives--and he has certainly sought publicity over the past several years. Successfully, I might add.It's certainly unfortunate that he saddled one of his sons with his name, given what a lightning rod for controversy he has been in California since the 1970s, but I don't think that is reason enough to pull the entry. Perhaps, however, someone other than I (and Hymers' henchmen) could succeed better in creating an NPOV.

I attempted to write this article with a NPOV, despite my negative experiences, and yet give young Christians the tools they needed to recognize the cult-like tactics used in Hymers' "church."

Perhaps a senior Wiki-editor could assist in adjudicating this dispute?

Administrative Wiki-Issue

How do I create new sub-pages of this page? (That is, offshoot pages that are just for my reference, or drafts of articles, reference lists and whatnot?) And how do I access them from the main page once I've created them? (I've just been creating bookmarks, but there has to be a more efficient way.)

You created User:Scooge/Robert L. Hymers fine. I think the easiest way to keep track of your subpages is to add a link to each subpage on your main userpage. In line cites

The easiest way to do inline citations is to cut and paste the {{citeweb}} template, or {{citiation}} if it's not an online reference, with the appropriate sections filled in directly next to the section in which you want the reference to appear. You then wrap the entire thing with <ref> and </ref>. At the bottom of the article, under a section marked "References" simply put add the tag {{reflist}} if it isn't there all ready. This will have the effect of creating a footnote "in line", with all the reference information appearing under the reference section. This makes it much easier to determine whether the statement quoted appears in the article. I'm going to do a reference this way now at the Hymers article; you should be able to click on the "edit this page" tab afterward to use it as an example. Second Edit War over Bob Hymers

It would be great if someone could come along and adjudicate it a bit--particularly someone with a background in evangelical Christianity, Christian cults/abusive churches, or messianic Judaism.

It isn't just a question of wording--Hymers, or one of his close colleagues of 20+ years--continues to remove basic facts that go to the core of the man's notability (namely, his involvement over the years with abusive/authoritarian churches). There is a full-on attempt to whitewash the man's background. If anyone can help, please do so.

Scooge, you've already indicated that you have a serious conflict of interest when it comes to this subject. Instead of discussing issues on the talk page, you revert changes to the article. In addition, you actually defended the hack piece that was your version of lead paragraph - if you can't even see how incredibly biased it is, then I would suggest this is a good time to recuse yourself from editing the article and limit yourself to discussion on the talk page of the article. Regardless of your feelings about the subject, you need to follow Wikipedia policies, which include being incredibly careful with biographies (WP:BLP) and writing from a neutral-point of view (WP:NPOV). Please review WP:COI which discusses how to handle editing subjects that you have a strong connection with. Shell ^babelfish 15:28, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

Let me see if I can answer all of your questions - if there's anything that still doesn't make sense, or you have more questions, feel free to drop me another note.

1) Hymers is within his right to speak with an attorney over many things and just the fact that someone might do so is not what Wikipedia calls a "legal threat", however, if someone (account or IP address) were to indicate that they were taking legal action against an editor or Wikipedia itself then the account or IP address would be blocked from editing Wikipedia until such time as they indicated that the legal business had been concluded or that they were withdrawing the threat of legal action. In other words, while saying someone is consulting an attorney verges on being inappropriate and will likely get someone counseled about the no legal threats policy, its not quite to the level of requiring a block (unless its repetitive or used to try to discourage other editors from participating).

2) What someone's attorney says or what we think really isn't the focus here; what Wikipedia articles do is report what was said by other reliable media. So, for example, if a reliable source states that Hymers use of certain words or tactics is a power play on his part, we can record that in the article and cite the source. On the flip said, if the source only says that he used an offensive word, we can't draw our own conclusions about it being a power play, so we would only put in what the source said (see WP:OR for a discussion of not using what Wikipedia calls "original research"). And again, if someone else suggests that the incident was "just horsing around", we don't put that in the article or change what is in the article unless they can provide a source which backs up their claims.

3) I'm not aware of the vitamin C issue, so could you point me again at the source for that? If its a notable incident, we should be reporting what the source has to say about the subject, being careful not to include things that the source doesn't say about the subject.

4) I know it may seem like things are unbalanced at this point because Wikipedia editors tend to be a bit more watchful about negative information in biographies of living people, but Kyu has also been advised of the conflict of interest guidelines and asked to refrain from editing the article. I'm sure there are still a number of things that need fixing in the article, such as the sentences you pointed out that may be giving information not really contained in the sources - my changes certainly didn't fix everything, but I hope they were a start on the way to a better article. Lets see if we can't use the talk page of the article to discuss what points still need improving and how best to handle them.

No worries about the situation - a lot of people come to Wikipedia because of a subject that interests them and it takes some time to get acclimated to the way Wikipedia works. First off, I apologize for the spam. You are receiving this message because you have indicated that you are in Southern California or interested in Southern California topics (either via category or WikiProject).

I would like to invite you to the Los Angeles edition of Wikipedia:Wikipedia Loves Art, a photography scavenger hunt to be held at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) on Saturday, February 28, 2009, from 1:00 to 7:00 PM. All photos are intended for use in Wikipedia articles or on Wikimedia Commons. There will be a prize available for the person who gets the most photos on the list.

If you don't like art, why not come just to meet your fellow Wikipedians. Apparently, we haven't had a meetup in this area since June 2006!

We've been over this before and I thought we had finally cleared up how the WP:BLP policy works and how careful you're required to be with articles like R. L. Hymers, Jr.. Yet again, you've gone in and made unsubstantiated claims of abuse, henchmen and other sundry negative claims without a single source to back you up. I understand your frustration. If there are items you feel have a promotional sound to them, please point those out specifically - when you make generalizations about the article, its very difficult to know what might need changing.

The basis of the problem is that you don't have any evidence of many of the claims you've made - if you can find a reference/source for any of those claims, then by all means the article can be changed. For instance, if you want to describe him as "controversial", we need sourcing that backs up that characterization. As of now, the only controversy in the article is many years old and only deals with abortion and the movie - that's hardly "controversial" as a whole.

It might also make sense to reach out to a related Wikiproject (Christianity maybe?) and have other editors take a look over the article to see what they think. Shell ^babelfish 16:48, 16 June 2009 (UTC)

Please see the L.A. Times articles I posted over at the Hymers talk page. They all make it very clear that he had been featured in many articles over the years for a variety of reasons. I only sent you the text of eight of them, but the long profile is very explicit about him having spent an extraordinary amount of time in the media spotlight.
