Vital articles and VA tagging

I think the two are pretty much the same. But from what I remember the VA tagging list is from an older list of vital articles, and isn't automatically updated. I noted that you proposed these additions first, and that's probably the best way to go. Exactly when the tagging list is updated is something I'm probably too new to be able to really address, though. As the Lead is still in Discussion, its seen as tendentious editing to edit in a change which hasn't met with consensus as of yet. I do think that your proposed lead statement is worth discussing, and maybe even implementing, so I've moved the proposed lead over to the Discussion page under a new header showing both the prior paragraph and your proposed changes. That way, the otehr editors can weigh in. This reduces edit warring and charges of pov-pushing in the article and in the Discussion area. I did not alter your edits one bit in transferring them over (wouldn't want to make a mistake as I did with the archive), and I wanted to point out that the term you substituted 'highly crystallized' should in fact be 'highly stylized' - unless you were moving in a different direction altogether. One more standing issue

sorry to bother you again :( But since you gave a hand...I was browsing through Central Asia categories. I noticed that when we rate articles now, it puts them on pages like [Category: Stub class Central Asia articles], (pages not created yet).. At the same time there are already [1] categories here with sortings like [Category:Stub class Central Asia-related articles]. check this page I rated Talk:Demographics_of_Kazakhstan. There are two red categories at the bottom of the page: These pages are uncreated. But we already have a Category:Start Class Central Asia-related articles which is under the Category:Central Asia articles by quality page where the rating should put the Demographics of Kazakhstan page. Iranian Revolution

Salam. Thanks for letting me know. I have left a response there. BTW I don't think the article on Iranian Revolution should only use American sources. That is a huge mistake. American authors mostly have a flawed view of the revolution, and only focus on the Khomeini camp, when in fact Shariati was the most popular among the educated Islamists, and the nationalists being most popular among the middle-classes and the Communists among workers, especially in the north. The Khomeini cult was mostly popular among the rural folk of central Iran and the villages of Azarbaijan who were under clerical influence. Unfortunately I have no books on the revolution on hand at the moment. BTW, do you have information about Nasser Pourpirar? This guy is really something else. Khorshid 03:48, 4 April 2007 (UTC)

Hi, I noticed you have this page of templates User:Sa.vakilian/Some usable templates which is a good idea to have a resource of your frequently used templates, but by adding them to that page, it puts the page in categories. The reason I saw it was because I was clearing out the candidates for speedy deletion and your page was in there. If you want you can just link the template with the double square brackets or you could use {{tl|example template}}. Wiki alf blocked indef the 2 vandals [4] [5]. If that happens again, just revert w/o caring about the 3RR. Remember, the three revert rule says don't revert any page more than three times within a period of 24 hours. This is understood not to include reverting cases of clear vandalism (as in this case). Core topics, Vital articles, and the 1.0 project

Hi, sorry I took a few days, I've been very busy. The 1.0 team needs to do several tasks in order to achieve the goal of producing good offline releases:

• Selecting articles for the next release version - currently Version 0.7. This is probably our main task, and you sign up as a member of the review team to do this. We will soon have a bot helping us.
• Maintaining a network of WikiProjects (and the related bot) that provides us with article assessments. Support and guide the projects in this work, in conjunction with WP:COUNCIL.
• Locating areas where our coverage is weak, and making sure we cover those areas in our releases (perhaps by helping with new WikiProjects, and article assessments).
• Producing a list (or lists) of "must have" articles we consider essential for all releases, and improving these up to A-Class.

Your question mainly relates to "must have" collections of articles - the last item on the list - so I'll focus my answer on that. The only such collection organized by the 1.0 team is the Core Topics collection. VAs and WP:CONCISE are autonomous pages set up by individuals - so anything you do at WP:VA will not affect anything else. These collections should really coalesce around specific pages, but there has been a little forking at times. There are basically three levels:

1. Core topics (top 150 or so) + Core topics supplement (another 200 or so)
2. Vital articles (top 1000 or so) + expanded Vital articles set (top 1000 + perhaps 500 more). It appears that Wikipedia:Core topics - 1,000 is some kind of fork of that, but that page is less active.
3. WP:CONCISE (top 10,000 or so).

The Core Topics collaboration is where people work together to improve one of the core topic articles. We have now managed to get most of the core topics past "Start-Class" to at least B, this has been very useful.

One problem we have had is that the person who was keeping the Core Topics pages organized has moved on to other things outside Wikipedia, and no one has been willing to take over her job since she left. I pretty much have my hands full with Version 0.5 and WP:WVWP, so I can't really do much, though I have been keeping the Collaboration going as this has been moderately active. The various Core Topics lists were all produced manually, and copied over into different formats. Probably what we need is to remove the manual lists and rely on the Bot lists. We already have all of the main Core list tagged, and these are read by the WP1.0 bot, though we are updating the template used for that.

I think we probably need to do the following in the next three months:

• Get all Core Topics, Core Topic Supplements, and perhaps Vital articles (short & long forms) using the bot, then use those lists for the Core topics at least.
• Get the above using the new template.
• Then delete the existing Core Topics manual lists and replace these with lists automatically generated by the bot - these would stay more up to date.
• Get someone to coordinate and maintain the Core Topics project.
• Produce a navigational template for the Core Topics project, including VA, CONCISE, etc. similar to the one I did for WVWP.

Maybe you'd be interested in working on this part of the project - the "must have" lists? Or, if you signed on for the review team, would you prefer to be reviewing articles for the next release? Please let me know. I hope I have clarified things for you, and not merely added to your confusion! The 1.0 project has many, many corners to it! Probably the best thing is to focus on that one issue for now. If you like it, maybe we can persuade you to coordinate WP:CORE for us? :) To change the VA list, you will have to negotiate with the main people who are active on the page, these have generally been User:dv82matt and User:Silence, and reach a consensus with them. Remember that everyone brings their own bias and opinion - for example, I think we should have about 150 countries listed at VA (partly as a way of making the list less Eurocentric), but Silence has vigorously argued for only 50 or less. Do you have lots of biographies, or concepts, or subject areas like Computer science? Where's the balance? You seem to include a lot of biographies, but dv82matt and myself have argued that we should limit these to make room for subjects and places. I would argue, for example, that if you want to include Avicenna you need to include Uzbekistan first.

If you scroll up the page, you can see my suggestion for determining notability with less bias, by using the number of interwiki links. Thus, if something is truly notable around the world, people in every language would have an article on it. (Uzbekistan has 87, Avicenna 39 - the latter is a pretty high interwiki score for a biography article). (Incidentally, I've seen Avicenna's statue in Bukhara, hence my choice). Sometimes our favourite person doesn't get a high rating - I think Belisarius deserves more fame, for example - but we just have to accept that our opinions aren't universally held. Criticism of Islam

Agha you want to see anti-Islamic bigotry --- have a look at Criticism of Islam. Any criticism of the article's bias and prejudice against Muslims is quickly tossed away (see Talk:Criticism of Islam). Compare this article with Antisemitism and Criticism of Judaism. Double standard or what? Its disgusting that Wikipedia is being used to promote this anti-Muslim hatred. Pat Robertson, Bat Ye'or, etc are bigots, yet they are labelled as "critics"! I believe the removal of the tags is the editor's POV pushing, as he/she has tried to "retaliate" by doing the same on a well-sourced article: US raid on Iranian liaison office in Arbil. Basically, I've changed the "some newspapers" to cite the Daily Star specifically, since that's what the article says originally published it, but to state "Others" broadly, since the paragraph also talks about some historian. Since the dispute about the quotations is mentioned in the next sentence, I'm not sure that the {{check}} tags are necessary. However, if there is a different quote of the same speech, or the matter is highly disputed (again, I haven't reviewed this in any great detail), then the quotation may not belong at all. That could be my mis understanding of Arbayeen, that article suggests it's a shia festival 40 days after a specific holy event. Now being Iranian I am not completely unaware that unofficially 40 days after anyone's death is acknowledged but I never thought it's that notable and certainly not notable on such scale, if it was sourced that it was hailed so highly then I wouldn't have a problem with it, but it had the ^[citation needed] tag for a month and nothing was provided. Thank you for your note. Your comment sounds very reasonable and I agree on that. Nevertheless, I think that the sentence "But United States intelligence officials speculate there has been contact between Hezbollah and low-level al-Qaeda figures who fled Afghanistan for Lebanon" in the main entry about Hezbollah should be expanded with "although this hypothesis has been questioned (footnote with reference to Hersh)". I was trying to summarize the two claims. The article already says Lebanese Shi’ites often make zakat contributions directly after prayers, and an additional donation in a Hezbollah donation box. then surely this is the main source of its income comes from donations by Muslims. Khomeini Political thought and legacy

No I have not read those links. My ideas was to take theological issues I found in english language books and sort of compile them in a section or even an article. I know khomeini was known for his poetry and mystical ideas and these were somewhat controversial. On the details of this issue I am ignorant. But of course Khomeini is famous ourside of Iran not for mysticiasm but for his political ideas. Perhaps I'm out of my depth. --Leroy65X 20:02, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

Khomeini was also very involved in less philosophical, more temporal issues. I wanted to make a distinction between velayat-e faqih and issues like Divorce, votes for women and the legality of music, shich I figured were more worldly. Salam, and thanks for the message. I prefer to have the Shi'a and Sunni scholars separated, but i have nothing against merging all Shi'a into one and and all Sunni into the another. At the same time, we do need to duplicate their name in categories that reflect what they were scholars in, and that is the justification for the many categories. take a closer look and see if you really feel them to be redundant. Also, do remember that most scholars are not included in their appropriate categories, and it might be easier to see the justification for the categories ones they are populated. Semi-protection would be inappropriate here, as some anonymous editors have been involved in the dispute and edit war. The case for doing nothing

It was twilight for the reform era, with President Mohammed Khatami in his ineffectual final year and a hard-line resurgence taking shape on the horizon, when I visited the Tehran office of a civil society activist named Amir. A slender, clean-shaven man in his early thirties, Amir was a networker of sorts; he spoke perfect English and sent out flurries of petitions when Iranian journalists or activists were imprisoned. He also sat on the boards of five reformist nongovernmental organizations.

Amir seemed nervous the day I met him. Although he hadn't been harassed himself, several of his friends had been called into the intelligence ministry and questioned about his activities. Lately, an endless stream of new cases seemed to flow across his desk--women's rights activists, bloggers, young people spirited away to unknown prisons. The charges were always the same: treason, in the form of participation in a U.S. plot to overthrow the Iranian government.

The reform era, Amir explained to me, may not have accomplished all Iranians had hoped it would in terms of structural political change. But it had opened a space that had not existed before. Khatami had made it possible for some 37,000 nongovernmental organizations to take root, addressing a panoply of social issues and human rights concerns at a granular level. In time, Amir insisted, even when the political space for reform had closed, this civil society could quietly grow, becoming a powerful force for change.

But there was a problem. The government had become convinced that the United States planned to finance and train these activists to overthrow the Islamic Republic, much as it had done in Serbia and elsewhere. In leaked intelligence reports Amir had seen, the regime had meticulously documented its case: "They quote the American Enterprise Institute and Michael Ledeen, as well as the statements of President Bush about civil society," he told me. On the basis of such evidence, the regime was pursuing an aggressive campaign against nongovernmental organizations as well as individual activists and journalists it named as part of a "spider's web" woven by the CIA.

Amir implored me to bring the message back to the U.S. government and think tanks to please stop expressing solidarity with Iranian dissidents. He said that, to his knowledge, all offers of U.S. funding, however tempting, had been refused as too dangerous and compromising. "If the link is not there, why do this?" he demanded. The overwhelming majority of Shi'as believe Fatima was the only daughter. You thinking or knowing otherwise is of no importance. Part of the edits I reverted was your bad english. Also, allow me to say that Iranians are not exactly the right reference on Shi'a-related issues. My edits are well sourced, yours are poorly sourced.
