On the talk page, you can use {{User:Ckamaeleon/Spoken Wikipedia In Progress (no request)|Caninedoubletake|2006-12-09}} Where the two parameters are your username and the date you placed the notice. If you're making significant or frequent changes to the article as you ~~edit~~ record, you might want to also put {{inprogress}} at the top of the article page. That was unfortunate. I can demonstrate beyond all doubt that I had authorization to upload that front page because I am an editor at that paper.

Beyond that, I believe front pages of newspapers belong on Wikipedia and should be considered fair use.

But I digress.

Kevin - The image was deleted because you uploaded it under a license that said it was only allowed to be used on Wikipedia. Unfortunately that does not fit with Wikipedia's goal of being a truly free encyclopedia where other people, companies, or organizations can freely use content from Wikipedia (with proper attribution). This leaves two options for your image:

If you truly have the right to release the copyright of the front page of your newspaper, you can upload it with a {{GFDL}} or a {{cc-by-sa}} license. However, I have serious doubts that as an editor you have the authorization to waive the school's copyrights on part of the newspaper.

The other option, which seems most reasonable to me, is to upload the file under a claim of fair use with the license {{newspapercover}}. You will also need to write a fair use rationale.

I wouldn't have any problem with the general idea of banning this user, but the technical reason I choose a block rather than a ban is that IP edits and account creation are blocked now. If you go to my webpage at "http://voyages.pixinn.net/perou" you can read that all my pictures from South America are released under a Creative Commons CC-BY-ND 2.0 (see : "http://voyages.pixinn.net/perou/licence.htm"). As I know that this particular CC license is not compatible with Wikipedia, I reposted of these photos on Wikipedia using a CC-BY-SA 2.5 license. In order to verify my identity and that I am the author of these pictures, you can see that the pictures on Wikipedia are of higher resolution. So they were not copied from the website. Therefore I think the five pictures don't pose any problem regarding their copyright status. If I am wrong, please let me know : I wouldn't like to see them deleted. Audio problem

I've recorded two audio pronunciations. One I did in the standard Windows sound recorder before converting it to .ogg with an online utility. The other was recorded and exported from Audacity. Do you have any idea why my VLC Media Player refuses to play the Audacity-created file? Did I do something wrong when I exported it? - Mgm|^(talk) 09:36, 20 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've installed VLC because Windows Media Player didn't play any .ogg files. When you say "I just checked and mine does work" do you mean that your media player plays my pronunciation files? Or that your VLC copy plays oggs? I've had some people record articles and those play fine. It almost seems a size-related problem. How do you set up your program to record files? Ah, no I didn't check any of your files because for the past 36 hours or so I haven't been able to see any images (or other uploaded files) from the Wikimedia projects. My VLC copy does play oggs, as well as my copy of Windows Media player since I downloaded the codec. I've only made one recording for Wikipedia, and I did use audacity for that. A question completely unrelated to Critical Mass

What does the "no original research" policy mean, exactly? I am a published author on certain subjects. Is it fair game to cite my own published works on, say, Tibet? Should I cite directly the works that I have cited in my publications? (They are many: One of my published works has 532 footnotes, many with multiple citations, in 148 pages.)

And what about, say, constitutional law? Am I free to quote Supreme Court cases directly? Or do I have to find some secondary source that makes the same point that I wish to make?

Critical Mass

Well, the central point of my comments about Wikipedia’s article on Critical Mass is the non-neutrality of its description of Critical Mass’s disruption of PEDESTRIAN traffic. I thought that I had made that entirely pellucid, but evidently not.

Any point you were trying to make was overshadowed by your attacks on Critical Mass in general and the other editors of the article. Your point will be more effectively made if you can remain objective.

The article says that “Critical Mass … is largely understood to be an effort to promote alternative (non-motorized) modes of transportation and to raise awareness about the safety issues that face commuters using non-motorized forms of transportation when sharing the streets with motor vehicles.” If “non-motorized forms of transportation” is intended to include walking, that is far from clear.

This is the type of stuff that needs to be removed from the article. "Largely understood," without a citation, is meaningless.

The article says that “[g]enerally, the purposes of the event as indicated by the actions of the riders are meant to oppose the domination of the automobile over our urban culture, or to create something different.” Shouldn’t at least some mention of impeding PEDESTRIAN traffic be made as a way of making that statement more neutral? After all, how does impeding PEDESTRIAN traffic in any meaningful way “oppose the domination of the automobile”?

The article says that “Critical Mass rides typically accommodate and yield to emergency vehicles and often even pedestrian cross traffic ….” That statement is accompanied by no citation to anything. It appears to be based on the author’s (your?) personal observations. So how are my personal observations to the contrary -- based on how Critical Mass has behaved over the years in San Francisco, which is, after all, where the whole thing got started -- any less legitimate?

The article says that “[ I]t has been pointed out that the current prevalent traffic signals have been designed to facilitate groups of motorized vehicular traffic ….” Last time I checked, traffic signals were also designed to facilitate groups of PEDESTRIANS trying to get where they are going.

But in that context, the article says only that “the act of corking also gives the Critical Mass participants an opportunity to talk to … onlookers about what is going on, or why they are being made to wait.” Well, why? What does Critical Mass have to say about impeding PEDESTRIAN traffic other than “too bad for you”?

There are many parts of the article that need to be cleaned, sourced, or removed. Adding additional poor material is not an acceptable solution.

Finally, how is "sycophantic paean" any more objectionable than "propaganda piece," which has been allowed to remain unmolested?

Again, WP:NPA "in a nutshell: Comment on content, not on the contributor."

OK, but neither should be leaving in place -- apparently indefinitely -- an article that reads, as another commenter put it before I ever even showed up, "like a propaganda piece". The credibility of Wikipedia's neutrality policy would be enhanced if this article were simply removed (or replaced by a bare-bones version) until it can be brought up to Wikipedia's stated standards.

It appears to me that on {{PD-US}} we should change "This image is in the public domain in the United States. Thanks for your reply. I really don't know much about international copyrights; I just try to follow guidelines I can find as best I can. If you have questions or think something should be modified, perhaps the talk page of Wikipedia:Copyrights might be good places to start. On Commons the practice is generally to go with copyright law of country of origin, which is why I brought the question up; I know practices here on en:Wikipedia are sometimes different from those on Commons. At the Khalid Ahmed page, click the 'move' button at the top. On the move page, change the 'To new title:' field to the correct name. I've seen the tag and reviewed everything. This uploader has uploaded many images with false tags, that indicates that he is not the copyright owner of this image. Anyone can add images from online and claim they are the owner. This uploader needs to verify to us that he is "Hadi Zaheer" the person's name written under the image. The Air Pollution article needs permanent protection

SCEhardt, the Air Pollution article is badly in need of permanent protection. For example, in the period of January 7, January 8 and thus far in January 9th, every edit (about 10 of them) had to be reverted. In fact, you just reverted one yourself.

Thanks for fixing the license attributes of the spoken articles I posted. It was unclear to me what I should do, where, during the upload process. Hi - The way the license works, as best I understand it, is this: The text of the article is licensed under the GFDL. The GFDL requires that derivative works be released under the same license. Therefore the spoken articles, which are derivative works of the written text, must be licensed under the GFDL.

When uploading a file that you created entirely on your own, you have the choice to pick from several 'free' licenses. Uploading a spoken article is a fairly unusual case, so I don't think it makes sense to change the Wikipedia upload process (or that any such effort would be accepted).

I tried to make the Spoken Wikipedia upload page clear by inserting the comment "This is the license tag. Please leave the license selector blank." Windows file associations

Where can I go for help? I've followed the instructions to download and install the Windows codec on an XP PC. I can't get it to associate the .ogg filetype with the correct application. The Iliminable "program" in the Start/AllPrograms menu only has two options: uninstall and 'oggcodecs website' -- I can't find a program called DirectShow. Hi - This procedure should work to associate the files in WinXP:

Place a .ogg file on your desktop
Right-click the file and choose Open With -> Choose Program
Choose your desired program & make sure "Always use..." is checked
Press OK

Thanks SCEhardt for the help!!! The part I am stuck on is slightly different than what your instructions cover. I know how to associate a filetype with a program inside WinXP. The trouble in this particular case is I have no idea what program to associate the .ogg file extension with. And I could not find it made clear in the "help" instructions that are given on most ogg word pronunciations in Wiktionary; for example, on the word sweet, click on 'help.' It just isn't clear what program did get (or should have been) installed after completing the WinXP process steps, so I don't know what to try to associate it with. Ah, I see the problem :-) Direct Show is a class of media player. Once you have the codec installed, you should be able to open the ogg files in Windows Media Player (which is a Direct Show player). Voila! That was, indeed, the missing ingredient for me. Once I associated the .ogg files with the Windows Media Player application, it works on every Wikitionary "audio" click I just tested. Very cool. Thanks SCEhardt!

When you uploaded the file for the second time with the correct information summary, it did not replace the file information (that only works the first time). You know, I diligently tried to follow the instructions here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Spoken_Wikipedia/Uploading_guidelines and I butchered it badly it seems. Those instructions were for uploading directly to Wikipedia and not the Commons. I read that the Commons is a more versatile place to put the sound files. But there are no instructions for upload there. So I tried to figure it out with the one I did today and I got most of it to look like your cleaned up version of kimono.ogg:

Hi Eleaverton - We really need to make a standardized upload template that works on the Commons and here :-/ Until then, I'd just copy the source code of a format that works and change the article name, time, etc to match the new file. Requesting feedback

Thanks for cleaning-up at Image:Bank_Myna.ogg. Could I please request some feedback? Is this recording upto WP:SPOKEN standards? I would really like some feedback on this before I dive into this kind of work.

Can we use more than one voice talent for an article? There is interest in WP:MILHIST in collaborating for long articles.

Are embellishments permitted? Sound effects such as drums, trumpets etc.

Hi AshLin-- Overall the recording sounds good! The main thing I would work on are the inconsistencies in the sound; most of the audio is very clear, but in a few areas there is significant background noise.

I think embellishments would be fine, as long you create them yourself or they are of a compatible license (Public Domain or GFDL).

I think that using more than one voice, while not preferred, would be OK. Whoever compiles the various article parts would need to make sure that the volume balancing is consistent between the speakers.
