Portals WikiProject update #017, 22 Aug 2018

This issue is about portal creation...

Creating new portals

Myself and others have been testing and experimenting with the new components in upgrading existing portals and in building new portals. They have now been applied in hundreds of portals.

The templates are ready for general use for portal creation.

They are still a bit buggy, but the only way we are going to work the rest of the bugs out is by using them and reporting the bugs as we come across them.

I look forward to seeing what new portals you create!

Portal creation tips

After starting a portal using {{box portal skeleton}}...

Placing a panorama (banner picture) at the top of the intro section is a nice touch, and really makes a portal look good. {{box portal skeleton}} doesn't automatically insert panoramas. So, you will need to do that by hand. They can be found at Commons:. For some examples, check out Portal:Sharks, Portal:Cheese, and Portal:Florence
The search term provided in the Did you know? and In the news sections is very basic and rarely matches anything. It is best to replace that term with multiple search arguments, if possible (separate each argument with a pipe character). For example, in Portal:Capital punishment, see https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Portal:Capital_punishment&diff=855255361&oldid=855137403 Searches in templates use Lua search notation.
Check the In the news and Did you know? sections for mismatches. That is, sometimes entries come up that shouldn't be displayed. If there are any, refine the search strings further, so they don't return such results.
Finish each portal you've created before creating a new one. We don't want unfinished portals sitting around.

Awesome, Eustachiusz! If I come across more sources (I am absolutealy sure there are) I'll add them. Also, Carl Wilhelm Gropius is available on the de., fr., hu. and sv. wikis. Thanks, Robert. I'm sure you're right and that there must be many other sources - this man was clearly very prominent in his field. The sources from de-Wiki are already in the article and I don't think fr and sv add much to those but I'll take a more careful look at hu. Dear AWB'er

I noticed over at the Portals WikiProject that you have or use AWB (or JWB).

There are some tasks that have turned up that are perfect for AWB.

We have many new portals, and they need:

To have a {{Portal}} template placed in the See also section on the corresponding root article, outline article, and index article.
A {{Portal}} template placed on the corresponding category page.
A link placed at the end (in the "bottom" section) on the corresponding navigation template. For an example, see Template:Birds.

The new portals can be found on Category:Single-page portals along with some revamped ones. You'll need to use the skip feature of AWB.

Do you know about the list conversion technique for using AWB? (Taking a list of one type of page, and turning it into another type to plug back into AWB).

For example, you make a list of portals, such as from Category:Single-page portals, and then copy that into a sandbox, add link delimeters using search/replace, and delete the "Portal:" from the links to get a list of corresponding root articles. You then use "links on page" in make list in AWB to get all the links off of your sandbox. Then you can use AWB to place {{Portal:{{PAGENAME}}}} in the see also sections of each of those pages. (Using this method, you'll have to go back and check each page for redlinks, because not all of the portal/root pairs will match.

Sure, The Transhumanist! Before going on semi-automatic mode I wanted to see the exact structure and possible occurances and do it manually (I always take extra care with AWB, and, especially in this case when high importance articles are being edited I like to play safe). @The Transhumanist: about 270 pages had the "See more" section, out of the 750-ish corresponding new portals. I've re-checked twice all the 270 edited pages to see if there is any error. So, for the paged containing a "See more" section everything's set.. Now that I have the entire list in a .txt file, is there a way to add the {{Portal:{{PAGENAME}}}} into the remaining 500 pages? Also, I noticed there are no icons for the new portals. I am quite familiar with graphic designing, if help is needed, let me know. Robertgombos (talk) 12:47, 30 August 2018 (UTC)

@The Transhumanist: I ment that some articles don't have a See also (my bad with the See more :) ) section. I just checked out the Template:Portal and I got the answer: "Within articles, this template is meant to be placed at the top of the article's See also section. If there is no See also section, you can put it in the External links section instead;". I'll proceed with it. Robertgombos (talk) 13:19, 30 August 2018 (UTC)

I got your email. I don't mind email, that's why it is activated.

In answer to your queries, the links to the new portals that are needed in the short term are one from the corresponding root article (for example, the corresponding root article for Portal:Sharks is Shark), one from the corresponding outline (if there is one, such as Outline of sharks), the corresponding index (if there is one), and the corresponding category (see Category:Sharks). Since there is no See also section on categories typically, the portal button goes in the top right corner of the page.

Concerning other pages to have the portal button on, I generally don't worry about that, because we also put a portal link (with icon) at the bottom of the corresponding navigation template (See Template:Shark nav), which is in turn already placed at the bottom of many relevant articles.

In the long term, others typically add portal buttons all over the place, but we have 700 new portals to worry about, with hundreds more on the way. So, basic linkage is fine. Right now we are trying to make sure the new portals are not orphans, and that we have a good range of topics covered (new portals).

Rollback granted

Hi Robertgombos. After reviewing your request for "rollbacker", I have enabled rollback on your account. Keep in mind these things when going to use rollback:

Getting rollback is no more momentous than installing Twinkle.
Rollback should be used to revert clear cases of vandalism only, and not good faith edits.
Rollback should never be used to edit war.
If abused, rollback rights can be revoked.
Use common sense.

Electricity?

As far as I know, Tesla's work included a grid like system of obelisks and pyramids and his project to transmit electricity wirelessly^[1] was abandoned, after a while (lack of investors). On the other hand, scientists claimed (based on some assumptions) that the Great Pyramid of Giza "could focus energy." According to an article by Mark Hodge, published in The Sun: "scientists believe the unusual discovery about the electromagnetic energy in the pyramid are just a coincidence".^[2] It is fascinating the assumption of a link between the Egyptian pyramids' possible properties and Tesla's attempt to transmit electricity without wires, however, I rarely make assumption on scientific topics. Speaking of new portals...

Now for the really fun stuff...

We've got portal creation, of a sort, down to about one to three minutes per portal.

(Now take a moment, for the full significance of that to register).

So, here is another area you could help out with. The following procedure should not be used to create more than around 20 to 25 portals per batch/session, for quality control reasons. (Note that WP:MASSCREATION pertains to articles and categories, but not portals.) Though, we don't want a bunch of incomplete portals (with empty or error-ridden sections). The procedure assumes you use Firefox and WP:WikEd, and you'll also need to install WP:SearchSuite.

Step one: search using WP:SearchSuite. With SearchSuite set to list (details off), sort on, and wikify on, do an advanced search of template space, using insource:navbox insource:whatever. The "whatever" represents whatever search string you use to find candidate portal titles. Then you click on View 50 at the bottom of the page, and then change limit=50 to limit=5000 in the browser's url box. Press enter. That will give you a nice long bullet list of templates.

Step two: Turn off WikEd, and copy/paste the list into your sandbox (otherwise you may get an annoying extra blank line after each entry). Then reactivate WikEd and use search/replace in WikEd to change "Template:" to "Portal:" You now have a list of portal links, with many or most of them redlinks.

Step three: Using Firefox, Ctrl+Click on a bunch of promising looking portal redlinks. But only click on correct portal names (unless you plan on restarting such tabs with the correct portal name). That will create a new page for each, in edit mode, each in a new tab. If you use a different browser, you'll have to figure out the correlate for ctrl-click to do this. I usually click on 30 redlinks, to create 30 tabs, because after rejects (in the inspection step later), that usually produces around 20 to 25 good portals.

Step four: Ctrl+Tab ↹ to go to the first tab. Add {{subst:quick portal}}. Copy it, and Ctrl+Tab ↹ to the next tab. Then oscillate between Ctrl+V and Ctrl+Tab ↹ until all the tabs have {{subst:quick portal}} in them. Template:Quick portal is a slight modification of Template:box portal skeleton, with some specific adjustments and a new feature that Evad just completed for hiding navbox formatting in topic sections (we're testing it).

Step five: For each tab, press ⇧ Shift+Alt+P to get a preview of each new portal. Basically, oscillate between ⇧ Shift+Alt+P and Ctrl+Tab ↹ until all the tabs are in preview mode.

Step six: Inspect the new portal in each tab. Click on the image slideshow to make sure there is more than one picture in it. If not, close the tab (Ctrl+W. Look for Lua errors. The intro excerpt will be blank if there is an "&" or other strange character in the title. In that case, you can fix it by typing in the title in the place of the {{PAGENAME}} magic word (after you've saved the portal). But don't save yet. If the picture slideshow has a lua error, then it usually means no pictures on the root article. Close that tab (using Ctrl+W. At this stage of development, we're looking for the low-hanging fruit (subjects that produce complete portals without any prep). Another thing to check are the DYK and ITN sections -- sometimes the search parameter matches more than it should, resulting in irrelevant entries. Those can be fixed in Step seven. If you see any other lua errors or formatting errors, close the tab. If, on the other hand the portal looks good, save it, with the edit summary of "start portal". Complete this step for each tab, but don't close the new portals just yet.

Step seven: Using Ctrl+Tab ↹ browse each new portal in the batch, to see if there is anything else you want to do to them. Especially improving the search parameters in the DYK (Did you know...) and ITN (In the news) sections. This is also a good time to add a sourcepage or two to the image slideshow. This is when I add a panorama to region portals. You can sometimes find banner pics for into sections on other subjects as well.

Step eight: Cycle back through them and add the appropriate categories. If you are doing all the same kind of portal (like musicians) in a batch, you can add that category to the creation template. But, if you plan to do that, it is best to make a copy of Template:Quick portal and use the copy, so that others do not inadvertently get the wrong category on their portal creations.

Further comments: In portals created by quick portal, there are a number of sections that only appear if there is content available for them, so we don't wind up with empty sections for those. They are DYK, ITN, and Get involved (based on the existence of a corresponding WikiProject). DYK and ITN depend upon search parameters. The better the search parameters provided, the more likely for content to appear in those sections.

I mentioned we are looking for the "low hanging fruit." There are thousands of subjects where there is a robust navigation template, and good picture support in the root article. And no formatting errors when we create the new portal. For the subjects that don't have all of this, we can return to those once our tools have improved, or we've figured out a way to apply AWB to the task.

Portals WikiProject update #018, 04 Sept 2018

Bug hunt!

As you know, portals are now supported by a number of new templates, which are in turn supported by some new Lua modules.

Those templates and modules are being put to the test, in the new portals that have been created since this WikiProject rebooted, plus a number of existing portals that have been revamped.

The new portals, and revamped ones, can be found at Category:Single-page portals.

Please browse the new portals at your leisure, and report any and all problems that you spot. Post bug and other portal problem reports at WT:WPPORTD. Please report bugs, quirks, awkward aspects, or anything weird or off that you notice. Compliments and suggestions are also welcome. :)

When you report a bug, please indicate the portal's name, the section that the problem appeared in, and the name of the article appearing (first) in the section with the problem. Most problems will likely be encountered in the Selected general articles" section, due to quirks in a displayed article's wikicode that the lua modules don't handle yet. Your help in spotting those is of utmost value. Thank you.

Don't delete portal subpages just yet

For portals that have been converted to the single-page design, we are not deleting their subpages at this time, because we are working on ways to harvest the data from those pages. For example, the Selected picture subpages include filenames and captions that would be valuable for the image slideshows. Please don't delete portal subpages, for now. They'll be slated for d-batch speedy deletion after harvesting. Thank you.

Development notes

We are currently testing a feature added to {{Transclude files as random slideshow}} that allows it to accept both sourcepages and filenames. Courtesy of Evad37. This will pave the way for harvesting files and their captions from portal subpages, for use in image slideshows.

We need your help

The bulk of the work is being done by a handful of editors. But we can't do it all. We need help with spotting bugs, refining the search parameters in new/revamped portals (in the "Did you know..." and "In the news" sections), adding images to slideshows for a broader selection (they default to showing the images on the root article page but are capable of showing so much more), adding panoramic pictures at the top of the intro section of region portals (cities, counties, states, provinces, countries, continents, and other regions), to name but a few task types.

It is rewarding to be a part of the growing portal phenomenon. And you get to see its expansion and refinement up close.
