Unreferenced BLP tags

How are you determining which articles to tag as unreferenced? I keep coming across ones you've tagged that already have the 'BLP unreferenced' template such as Gledis Tafaj and Andrea Tafi (cyclist). --Jezebel'sPonyoshhh 19:49, 25 January 2010 (UTC)

On a related note, the page Commerce minister has repeatedly been tagged as unreferencedBLP or category:Living people, often with AWB or by bots. I think I've fixed this by removing an internal link to Faruk Khan, the (living) Commerce Minister of Bangladesh. I wonder if there are other non-BLP pages being tagged as unreferencedBLP. Project tagging for WPSweden

Hello Rettetast, I noticed that you had project-tagged another batch of Sweden-related articles, so I justed stepped by to say thanks for that! I'm deeply concerned at the present BLP mass deletions trend, and a quick inspection of the deletions list confirmed my gut feeling that a significant portion of the Sweden-related biographies remain untagged, despite a large growth in the number of articles within the project. (That slightly more articles are tagged for WPNorway than for WPSweden has contributed to that gut feeling.) As an increased avalanche of AfDs and PRODs over the next couple of months seem inevitable, and with project tagging, there would at least be a possibility to take a look at some them before they're all nuked to oblivion. Having them on the cleanup lists is of course also helpful, in case one would see any realism in systematically improving thousands of articles proactively despite little evidence of editors available to do so (sigh!). As I'm using a Mac at home (and one with not-to-updated version of MacOS at that), AWB is not available for me, so this assistance from you is much appreciated. I fully understand that WPSweden is not your primary focus, but if you would find time and inspiration to do more of this sometime it would be appreciated, in particular for biographic articles. Of course. It was the BLP drive that made me do the last tagging, but i will look for more. I only did the ones tagged with a stub template, but I can expand the search for articles in the subcats of Category:Swedish people. However it is easy to go deep and get too any false positives. I was the guy who edited the Trivia section of Azar Karadas page. I wonder why it has been deleted as other players have pages concerning their names in other languages such as Luis Boa Morte. What is unimportant for some maybe interesting for others. I think it's unimportant to know if somebody is married or not and the names of their children and it isn't for others. If you need sources, I can send a screenshot from the meaning of "Azar" in a Portuguese-English dictionary. Otherwise, just take a look at the Portuguese League winners and you see that what I've submitted there is true, combined with his season's games that are already in the article. From the link you send they say "This guideline does not suggest the inclusion or exclusion of any information; it only gives style recommendations. Issues of inclusion are addressed by content policies.", so it could enter at the description of the time he played for Benfica. re: Interesting stat

Hi Rettetast. I would be surprised if less than 5,000 footballer BLPs have been referenced since the end of 2008. It seems like at least 10 new unreferenced articles are added daily, and yet the total has been decreasing for some time.

While we're talking about unreferenced BLPs, I noticed that the categorization of players at important tournaments is not very thorough (especially Africa Cup of Nations, but also CONCACAF Gold Cup, Asian Cup and Copa América). This would make it easier to run CatScan to see if any of the unreferenced BLPs are players from these tournaments. I started categorizing many of the Africa Cup of Nations players, but there is so much work to do if it has to be done manually. Do you know if this can be done automatically by a bot? Best regards. I was using an on-Wiki source (2008 Africa Cup of Nations squads), which is probably a bad idea. I think RSSSF has reliable squad lists and try to use that. I have AWB, but I've only used it once, and don't really know how to use it well. Maybe I'll read the instructions and see if I can figure it out. It was a copy of the bio at that page. Wikipedia is licensed freely an can not accept copies of other websites without explicit permission. Permission to release the text under a free licesen can be sent to permissions-en AT wikimedia DOT org. See also WP:COPYREQ. Images of Manchester City Players

Hi,

I have recently uploaded images for the following former Manchester City players: Francis Lee, Mike Summerbee, Ian Bishop, Tony Coleman, etc. I note that you have stated that each image could easily be replaced by a free image and will thus be deleted in two days if not replaced.

I am of the opinion that no free images could be easily found for the above articles and would like to know why you think that such images could be easily found. If you have located such free images, please direct me to where i may also find them.

Hi Gingerdave and thanks for your effort. Images of living person are almost always considered replaceable. Bot because free images exist, but because such images almost always can be created. See WP:NFCC#1. If we allowed such images, why would anyone bother to contribute free images?
You should not remove the replacable tag on images. The reviewing admin will consider your arguments and decide if the image should be deleted. If you disagree with the admins decision you can list the file at WP:DRV. Rettetast (talk) 14:12, 18 February 2010 (UTC)

Blocking users for creating unreferenced BLPs

Hi Rettetast. I thought it was only fair to tell you that this block of yours struck me as a tad harsh, both in length and in warnings given. And it inspired a comment of mine at the BLP RFC. I'm part of the consensus there to change policy to stop allowing the creation of unreferenced BLPs, but it looks to me that you might have moved ahead of policy there. We have always blocked users that persistently violates policies or guidelines and denies to communicate with other users. Of course we don't block users because of the number of unreferenced articles they have created, but when they continue to violate our policies a block is perfectly fine per WP:BLOCK. The length can be discussed, but that is moot now. I had the users talk page on my watchlist and would have unblocked immediately if there was any sign that the user was aware of the problem. Well I don't dispute there is a problem, and I'm one of those who supports a change in policy so that new BLPs need to be verified with a source included. But one of the unreferenced articles he created has just survived AFD despite lacking any sources. So I think we are sending out mixed messages here, also I may have missed them but I couldn't see the equivalent of a level 3 or four warning saying that he would be blocked if he continued. Ships do enter ports, pretty regularly. However, this was not an image of a ship entering a port. It is an image of an icebreaker, breaking ice, during its shakedown cruise. The image was not replaceable because shakedown cruises only happen once, and not replaceable as there were no other parties present who might have taken photos they then released under a free liscense. I recently added to the biography of Elizabeth Nickson, because what Wikipedia had was brief and unrepresentative of this woman's work. You reverted to the original. I want to know why. What you have is borderline libelous and Wikipedia is already known for skewing left with all conservatives, performing a kind of character assassination that limits the right of individuals to free expression. I WANT THIS CHANGED BACK TO ORIGINAL. I want to know what your problem is with doing such. As soon as possible. I will at this time file a dispute claim, and will pursue this with vigour. Thank you. I have written to Mootros in the strongest terms protesting his action. I will be glad to go to the trouble of sourcing everything IF MY POSTING WILL STAND. If it does not stand, I will take this to dispute resolution and then to legal action. What stands here is so punitive as to be slander. And Wikipedia already has a reputation of character assassination. Elizabeth was accused of plagiarism in 2004, but her career on BOTH THE LEFT AND RIGHT has been a procession of sterling accomplishments. I have removed the section about plagiarism. Is there more that seems libelous. A good advice when editing wikipedia is too avoid threats, such as your above threat about legal actions. See WP:NLT. Unreferenced BLPs - take a closer look before tagging!

Hi there - this might seem a little petty, but I just had to comment on this edit you made back in January to the page De Lafontaine, adding {{unreferencedBLP}}: [3]. If you'd read the first line, you'd have seen that the subject of the article died in 1738. It's still unreferenced, but she's definitely not a 'living person'! Norwegian Ice Hockey task force

Hi Rettetast, I know you are heavily involved in Norwegian articles... Therefore I was wondering if you would join the Norwegian Ice Hockey task force, which I recently created? I've already assessed almost all of the Norway-related ice hockey articles, but we need more members in the task force to update the template, and get statistics on how many stub-, start-, list-, etc. class articles we have... Radical interpretation of Wikipedia customs?

Regarding this edit in which you reverse my reversal of another editor, I am surprised to note that you assert that one month is sufficient time to await fulfillment of a citation request using the inline maintenance tag {{Citation needed}}. I am also surprised that you choose to be as confrontational as your edit summary suggests. Yes, my edit summary was in response to yours. There is no grace period for unsourced statements and they can be removed by anyone. Reverting editors that remove unsourced statements is not productive. If you are interested in having removed unsourced material in an article, source it. The burden of evidence are on you. I disagree with your take on how to deal with these inline maintenance tags. The entire point of them is to give users some time to rectify what they request. One month is hardly any time at all, and if this practice which you advocate should be generalized it would simply defeat the purpose of having these cleanup tags in the first place. I'm not trying to troll, I'm trying to put a picture on my userpage without people removing it behind my back due to stupid copyright laws.

The Brothers Chaps, Mike and Matt created Homestar Runner and I would think that they would appreciate me using the image of the main character of their body of work to advertise their website. If you would want to indirectly harm the copyright holders, then fine, force me to remove the image.

I know why they are removing the images, they are Wikilawyering, they are using the strict interpretation of the rule, which is to not use someone elses work for personal gain, I am not using someone else's work for personal gain I am actually helping them.

Over zealous image deletion?

Hi, can I ask you to reinstate the image previously at http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Wotboxfront.jpg (linked to from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_on_Terror_%28game%29)

A while ago I provided a fair use rationale and stated myself to be the copyright holder of this image. How that isn't enough, I have no idea.

If I haven't jumped through the right bureaucratic hoop or ticked the correct box somewhere, please let me know. All I'm trying to do is improve the information on the page that has now existed for a couple of years but won't go anywhere fast unless I start adding some much-needed content.

The deleted images were intended to provide the exact reading and writing of song titles and where applicable information about the album in order to avoid incoherences and irrelevant debates on the name of the language for example, in which the songs are performed, etc.

No free equivalent. - fulfilled - there is no alternative

Respect for commercial opportunities - fulfilled - the non-free content is not used in a manner that is likely to replace the original market role of the original copyrighted media. Although I agree, some images are oversized, I would be glad to reduce them with the appropriate program.

Minimal usage + Minimal extent of use. - fulfilled - the images are only used in the relevant articles about the given album.

Previous publication. - fulfilled - the images have been published or publicly displayed outside Wikipedia.

Content. - fulfilled - it is the very object of an ancyclopedia to reflect facts as they are and not to succomb into eternal useless controversial debates. This is precisely why these images were uploaded.

Media-specific policy. - fulfilled - the material perfectly meets Wikipedia's media-specific policy.

One-article minimum. - fulfilled - each image was used in at least one article. By the way, I would like to recall that I have noticed previously how certain users delete the image from the article and then nominate it as an orphaned file - is this normal?

Contextual significance. - fulfilled - as the images significantly increase readers' understanding of the topic, and its omission would lead to various interpretations and edit warring as it was, for example, already the case regarding the name of the language "Romanian / Ukrainian".

Restrictions on location. - fulfilled - the images were in article namespace

Most of the points above are irrelevant. WP:NFCC works in the way that all points has to be fulfilled. In order to fulfill #8 you at least have to be able to provide sourced critical commentary about the specific image. Also the exact reading and writing of song title is obviously replacable with sourced text and therefore fails WP:NFCC#1. I don't think it is any point in going further this issue here. Ok, I do not think that a sourced critical commentary requirement may apply to a back cover of an album, I mean nobody comments this. However, like I said earlier, these back sides are relevant insofar as they clearly state which langauge was this or that song played and how it was exactly called on the album. There are certainly other sources for track lists, etc, but the problem is that they are all different and therefore only an irreplacable picture of the back cover may put a final fullstop in the debate. No 8 says Contextual significance. Non-free content is used only if its presence would significantly increase readers' understanding of the topic, and its omission would be detrimental to that understanding. The aforementioned images did exactly this - they were increasing understanding of the topic, since without these images the debate would go on and on and on. Therefore, IMHO, No 1 and No 8 are clearly fulfilled. If an unref blp article is partially translated from another WP that does have a referenced article , but without the refs, it is in my opinion more helpful to copy the refs over than to prod as unreferenced cf Valentin Stepankov--which obviously needs further translation, but it takes no knowledge of Russian to find properly formatted refs . I have just been checking prods, and I checked 10 of the articles you prodded in the last day or two. For 9 of them I quickly found references, generally in the obvious places in the googles. One was an obvious copyvio, and I marked for speedy accordingly. Of the 8 others, a few have dubious notability, and were so marked. But at least three or four of them were extremely notable, and will certainly hold at afd. This is not careful work. The point of blp prod is to remove unsourced articles, while keeping the ons that can be sourced. I would blame nobody for not trying to source articles that looked clearly non-notable--most editors would not think it worth the work, though I myself always check if there is anything likely at all, because the article does not always express the notability very well. But any careful editor would, I think, do at least a quick g-check on the ones that, based on the information presented, would certainly yield a good source. Otherwise, you're throwing the work on others who do care about both deleting and keeping articles according to the merits and sourceability.
You will probably argue that it is by prodding that we give the authors incentive to source--but we need to be nice to newcomers, or we will not replace the editors we inevitably lose by attrition, and almost all will source if the need is explained to them without the threat of deleting the articles. For the others, the deletion processes may have a role, but that's the exception.
Myself, I did not support the current blp prod policy, because I thought it both unnecessary and harmful. Since it has become accepted, I of course enforce it as an admin, as I do all policy. I delete unsourced BLPs that have been prodded if I cannot find a source--I deleted 4 or 5 of them today. But the method you are using is a very strong argument that the policy as adopted is a mistake, at least without the requirement of WP:BEFORE. I unfortunately can't stop you from prodding without checking, but I certainly can and will use the prods you have been making as an argument for why BEFORE should be a requirement. If you disagree with me that it's needed, as you probably do , why not give me less material? DGG ( talk ) 03:35, 8 April 2010 (UTC)
Hi. I don't think we are that far away from each that you may think. I have used a lot of time on sourcing BLPs and organizing specific projects with the goal of sourcing BLPs. My philosophy in using BLP-prod now is that it is better to use it now and Prod some every day instead of letting the article that qualify for BLP-prod pile up and have somone Prod hundreds or thousands at some point. That would be unmanageable. It is also a sad fact that the threat of deletion actually helps. Articles get sourced. You are of course entitled to make any point you want in the discussion of the policy. I have chosen to stay out of the discussions, but will enforce it as I see necessary. All the best. That's fair, but my 2 cents is that when the claim to notability is really clear (as it was in this case) taking 2 minutes to check for trivial sourcing would be preferred. In general checking for sources before BLPPRODing is encouraged (in the policy), and doing so for the clearly notable seems especially reasonable. My experience is a little different, but it depends on what type of people one checks--I do not do athletes and musicians, in general. . Of the ones I check 25% have sufficient notability to at least have a plausible chance of passing afd. I check them as far as necessary. order to keep up, I no longer check at all the ones that would unambiguously fail, but that is only about another 25%. In the middle 50%, I may not work too hard if It's the sort of person I know will be difficult to source, but I do if it looks easy enough.
But the one I cam here about today is Anthony Sinagra, a state senator.As it happens, there's even more to it than it looks, as the simplest g news search shows [9]--but a state senator from last few decades will always be trivial to source. Damn right I do. By all means use specialized databases, as I do when needed. If you want to use the more professional databases to do the sourcing that would prevent listing things for deletion, certainly do so. There are many sources which do very nicely in covering most of the material that the googles do, and extend it much further . For example Cartledge Gwendolyn could have been check through quite a number of expensive databases, and some free specialized ones. I often try to do it with free sources to set an example, showing users who have no others available that they can do good sourcing work here also. As an admin, I am required to do something about BLPs in particular that are harmful to he encyclopedia , and I may not choose to pass over them. If I were to see someone improperly removing BLP prods, I must remind them not to. If I see someone improperly placing them, ditto. It is hard enough for me checking them without out people making the work harder--it hinders me from doing as careful a job as I can in removing the ones that must be removed. Having to content with unnecessary deletion nominations inhibits dealing with the necessary ones. Hi. A user insists that File:Delhi metro smart card.jpg can be licensed under CC/GFDL because he took the image himself. I take it that this is still copyrighted by the Delhi Metro? Also, could you look at its use in Delhi Metro and consider if it would meet the free image rationale (is there enough discussion about the image to warrant it)?. I have nominated File:Delhi metro smart card.jpg for deletion. I can also not see that the image could pass WP:NFCC. The design of the ticket is probably the a pretty unimportant detail when it comes to the ticketing system. Proposed deletion of Kring

Thanks for leaving me the message. My bot created the page as a redirect to the asteroid 8391 Kring, which I think is the right target since the namesake of this asteroid (David A. Kring) hasn't got a Wikipedia article and Cristina "Kring-Kring" Gonzales (whoever that is), if notable at all, should be treated under a different title. Sourcing of the French Assembly

I see you've been adding unsoruced BLP tags to a large number of generated articles on the members of the French Assembly. I don't know if you've completed that, but if you haven't, or if you have an alternate way of accomplishing it, might you consider, rather than tagging, soucing the information from the following list? John Steve Brunache and several others of your recent BLP prods, have had very easy to find sources--I checked 6, & easily did 4 of them in Google News Archive or Google. One Michael McKenry was a major league baseball player! Another is a billionaire in Forbes. Marc Ladreit. Wouldn't it help get the truly unsourceable ones deleted as they ought to be if you checked at least the most obvious places first, so we only had to do real work on the others? There is no need to prod most of them at all , now or later, because most can be sourced. We have indeed had these discussions before, because I will confess to a certain resentment that you are throwing this sort of work on others--it does not help Wikipedia as much as either actually persuading the users to source in the first place or source them yourself. Hi Rettetast, I just happen to check Hanna Mjåvatn´s profile here. She is being deleted or redirected, this is really strange that Christopher Flinder Pedersen who ended up with the third position in the first season of Dansefeber is still there, while Hanna Mjåvatn who was the winner of the second season, is being deleted. In fact, I don't mind her deletion because I havn't contributed in that article in anyway. Tales Schutz

I am requesting help on the name of Tales Schutz.

There is a list in the article Schutz, with the name using 'u' instead of 'ü'. Therefore, I do not think Tales Schütz is a correct name. However, User:Hoiwa852 is keep changing the name of Tales Schutz to Tales Schütz (u to ü) without any source or evidence, in South China AA and Template:South China AA squad. I am afraid that I will violate 3RR again, so I hope you may give me some suggestions what I should do about this matter.

These images give an accurate idea on how Olympic sailing in the classes was performed at that time. It gives the reader very good information on the materials used in that time and also the handling of the yachts. This is not decorative. As example in file:1948 Star.jpg is shown that in 1948 the yachts are not sailed as flat as is done later. Also cotton sails and wooden mast are used. The mast are hardly bended and set almost vertical. The sails are set pretty loose to loose power. Vangs were not used and some of the yachts still use a extra forstay that runs to the top of the mast. Such details are not a good rationale for using a non-free image. Only if the image itself has an iconic status and is discussed in the article text, with sources of course, non-free historic images are OK. Falling Man is a good example. Ahhh, I see. It looks like that pic is not in the public domain. So there are some "fair use" issues, and the rule is "A rationale must be provided for every article any non-free image is used in, which must also declare compliance with the other parts of the non-free content criteria. Source and other copyright information must also be provided." Hmmmm, can you give me some guidance on that. For example, can you identify some other articles that include non-free photos in them, so I can get some examples that show how the policy works in WP? A good example of a valid fair use image can be found in Falling man. There are probably more at WP:NFC. Looking just at other articles will probably show you many invalid non-free images. The Copa Libertadores article that Jamen was trying to bring to GA status has been edited extensively by an IP user, which (using Geolocate) all come from the same area in Georgia as some of his suspected sockpuppets. As for their pages - well, the ones I saw weren't in & of themselves all bad. But the user was very diruptive - refused to address editors' concerns, & was a loose cannon, disregarding some aspects of wp:MOS.

Asking your advice

Hi Rettetast. As I said before, thanks for blocking Danielwork.

May I ask you some general advice - although a case in point is

If I try to engage with a user (take Kante4 above) and point out to him/her a flaw in their editing style - to wit never supplying Edit Summary nor using the 'minor' flag - but they effectively ignore all my polite reasoning, I'd be very grateful if you could advise me as to my further choice(s) &/or best course of action.

The course I'd most like to employ is to raise the lvl of the standard Twinkle message ({{Uw-editsummary}}), but as you'll know, it's just a single-issue lvl-1 warning.

So, the courses I'm considering include:

  • Their MO & pie of edits is similar to others I/we may have met before. Could I legitimately suggest they are a sockpuppet?
  • Undo their successive edits, with warnings of vandalism? This on the basis that ignoring consensus constitutes vandalism. Then apply for block at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard or ANI after level-4 warning?
  • As above, but citing "not communicating in English". After all, if they're not communicating at all, isn't that worse than communicating in say French? Then remedies as above, after lvl-4 warning?
  • Reporting the user to Wikipedia:Requests for comment - an unfavourable course since it involves me in I think much work (& others too) & would quite possibly simply be a delay.

As I say, I'd be very grateful for any advice you could give me - including perhaps a feeling for the potential pitfalls of particular courses of action I could take. Maybe there are other - & better / more efficient - methods I could employ?

While I understand that it feels frustrating engaging people that ignore you advice I think the smart thing to do here would be to ignore and move on.
The lack of edit summaries in itself may be annoying, but it is not something that you should get worked up about. You can't say that Kante4 has ignored you either. He has responded to most of your messages and clearly gets what you want. The templated messages is not something that needs a response and is uneeded at this point.
Looking at his contributions I can't see that I see any big problems. He interacts with other users on user talk pages and responds to most concerns. Reverting constructive edits because of lacking edit summaries is not a good idea and will probably be looked at as disruptive. The only case for reverting "good" edits are when they are made of banned(not blocked) editors.
I don't think this is a sock puppet case either. When I looked at Danielwork I followed a hunch and digged in his contributions. After a while it was obvious that he was a sock puppet of Hectortebat. If you have any evidence in this case you a welcome to e-mail them to me, but as I said I don't think that is the case.
My best advice is to remove his talk page from your watchlist and move on. Rettetast (talk) 23:05, 8 November 2010 (UTC)

I could easily remove one user - indeed a group - from my watchlist, as you say, & move on.

I'd have to say, though, that it does trouble me that a user can totally ignore a guideline, with impunity.

From WP's point of view,

  • WP has an advert to support the guideline:
  • WP provides registered users with the facility of the 'minor' flag.

Asking a user to supply a short ES, when making an edit - or clicking the 'minor' box - seems very little for WP to ask in return for the sterling service that WP provides for its users. And yet, in spite of the above 6 things, when push comes to shove, and a user ignores all such advice & facilities, the Wikipedia community collectively rolls over. It's as though we say to the user "Ok - you're right. Just carry on - ignore us. You do what you want & we'll hide.". It may seem as though the vandal-patrollers have no say, or no teeth.

The feeling that the WP community is powerless bugs me, and surely must bug one or two administrators, I would imagine - perhaps more so.

But I know you don't make the rules, & can only enforce those that exist & are collectively deemed enforceable.

Maybe my only legitimate path, if I feel strongly about it, is to start discussion at a suitable site - one of the Village Pumps perhaps.

Thought I would let you know that a blocked user, SuperSonicx (better known as Jamen Somasu), is to back to his usual antics such as causing havoc to articles (like this one) and harassing me (see here) via based IP addresses from the greater Atlanta, Georgia area. "Check deletion list"?

I'd like to be able to check pictures that are on the National Register of Historic Places listing in --- lists before they are deleted. Can you let me know how to do this? Other than having the images on your watchlist I can't think of any good solution. Maybe there should be a toolserver script for watching images in articles that are in certain categories or marked for specific project. But I don't know any. Rettetast (talk) 15:40, 27 March 2011 (UTC)
It seems to me the deletion process must be open to comments from editors who are concerned with various pictures, otherwise the process will lose its legitimacy. I have no idea why these pictures were deleted, or even how to find out, and that is a major problem, not so much for me, but for the process. Advice needed re BLP category intersection

You were a big help to WikiProject Opera with category intersection at the beginning of the unreferenced BLP issue. WP:WikiProject Women's History needs a list of all articles bannered with {{WikiProject Women's History}} which are also BLPs (BLPs in general, not just unreferenced ones). I noticed you removed all the managers national flags in 2012 Norwegian Premier League. I have absolutely no clue if the flags are pointless or not, I just made this article in the same "style" as 2011 Norwegian Premier League. Unprotections of BLP defamation targets?

Your removal of semiprotection from Talk:Yelena Dembo does not mirror policy. Please take a look at Wikipedia:PROTECTION#Guidance_for_administrators, which states, in part, "Administrators may apply indefinite semi-protection to pages which are subject to [...] violations of content policy (such as biographies of living persons, neutral point of view)". Your unprotection of the talk page, without consulting the protecting admin, especially in light of the various arbitration cases, RfCs, and WMF policy statements regarding BLPs, was not the best course of action. You may recall that the outcome of the WP:Pending changes removal is that semi-protection was to be used in its place where needed for BLP concerns. Please replace the indefinite semi-protection. Hi there and thanks for your input. First I want to say that i fully agree with your action in putting the indefinite protection on the article and the talk page in the first place. My unprotection of it now was in no way intended as any critism of the protection you put in pace. However indefinite protection is different from infinite protection. At this point, over a year after the attacks on the article I found that protection on the talk page was not necessary anymore. The BLP-defamation on the article and on its talk page lasted for about two weeks in September/October last year. If the attacker had wished to continue the disruption it would have been no probleim for him to circumvent the semi-protection. The issue is probably long forgotten by anyone but us.
In all I could not see any reason for the continued protection of the talk page and unprotected. I left the protection on the article, but that could probably be lifted to. I would also like to note that I put all pages that I unprotect on my watchlist.

The continued protection of BLP defamation pages has to do with our (sometimes legal, always ethical) obligations to prevent recurrences. In multiple cases last year, not including this one, I committed that Wikipedia would not permit such anonymous defamation again. With Pending Changes gone, there is no other way to do that aside from infinite (not indefinite) semi-protection. I think that once an individual has been defamed on Wikipedia, it is our obligation to make sure that does not happen again, using the tools at our disposal. I agree that it is unlikely that this article or its talk page will be a target again, but unlikely is not an assurance. If we had protection in place, removed it for no good reason, and the defamation recurs, Wikipedia could be liable, since we've exercised editorial control over the article and/or talk page, and are not acting merely as common carriers. Watchlisting such an article is good, something I routinely do, and the reason I noticed the removal of semi-protection. I have been known to miss things in my watchlists before, though, and so I prefer that anonymous editing on the talk page and article of a BLP defamation target like Ms. Dembo be continued infinitely, or at least until her death. Semi-protection is cheap, defamation on the world's 5th most popular website is a big problem. Jclemens (talk) 02:24, 3 January 2012 (UTC)

Maybe my "notability"-tag on David Hanssen was misplaced, but from my point of view, (I don't know much about this player), I'd have to guess if he is notable or not: The article doesn't state that he played in Tippeligaen, only that he played in five clubs that have played in Tippeligaen - and nothing about matches played.

I believe he is notable (if I thought he wasn't notable I would have PROD'ed the article), but my concern is that the article does not state that he is notable and that's why I put that tag on the article. I haven't been editing articles on wikipedia for a very long time, so if I'm doing it wrong please tell me, but isn't that what the "notability" tag is made for ? MSU Interview

Dear Rettetast,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.


So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.


Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. Question

This is not at all a criticism of you, rather that I want to get this down better myself. On Garnet you denied a RfPP request of mine, the page has had all nonconstructive edits, quite a few within the last month. Looking back through history, every edit from an IP or new user (so essentially every edit in the past couple of months) has been reverted. Would this be something that PC is better suited for? We try to be very restrictive of when we use protection as it goes against on of the basic ideas on wikipedia, that anyone can edit. Semi-protection is usually reserved for stopping a recent influx in disruption or for articles that are an inherit magnet for vandals. It is however not used to stop a tricle of vandal edits over months. The best way to stop that is regular RC-patrol and watchlisting. Rettetast (talk) 10:27, 6 April 2015 (UTC)

Hello there!

I noticed that you commented out the File:Gonzaga Alternate Logo.png and File:VCU Rams Old Wordmark.png on the Gonzaga Bulldogs men's basketball and VCU Rams men's basketball yearly pages. I was very confused why you would comment these out in the first place, and to say that there was "no rationale use" for the images was rather silly.

Since you are from Norway, I do not think you understand college basketball in the United States, specifically the logos of each team. The images of Gonzaga and VCU represent the logos of those schools based on that season they competed. In that case, there is rationale use for those images, because they represent the logo of that school. If that isn't rationale, I do not know what is.

Please let me know if you have any further questions or comments, but understand it was not the right decision to say there was "no rationale use" for those images and put it up for speedy deletion.

Mellotron (and historic edit wars thereof)

Hi. You recently wrote "Consider dispute resolution". To cut a very long story short, there is a longstanding feud on this article by a series of IPs who claim they have rights to the instrument, contrary to what reliable sources tend to report. Previous conversations have deteriorated into personal attacks and the occasional block (IIRC @Bbb23: issued several of these), so I don't really have any confidence going to 3O or DRN is going to accomplish much other than more hot air. Since I don't want to fall foul of 3RR myself, the only option left is for more people to keep an eye on the article, trying to get a discussion going, and protecting if too many reverts are going on. Hej Rettetast, just wondering why you've been taking out links to this image from cricketing articles? I'm not saying you don't have a reason, I just think the articles in question would benefit from the inclusion of this image. Sorry, legalities of things such as this have always been a blind spot for me, unfortunately. Is there anyway that usage of this image can satisfy the requirements for it to be shown on the relevant articles, directly relating to the team and their history/results? It looks ok for East and Central Africa cricket team and East Africa cricket team which it also has rationales for. It is used in a bunch of other articles, that looks like blatant abuses of NFCC. The logo of an organization/team is generally ok on the article about that org/team, but not on any other article. Being the logo of a non-Country national team, how does usage of this image differ from the usage of the Irish Cricket Logo and the West Indian Cricket Logo's usage on the articles not directly relating to the cricket teams themselves (ie. I looked at File:WestIndiesCricketFlagPre1999.svg and File:Cricket Ireland flag.svg. Those logos are tagged as free images and does not have to adhere to our non-free policies. Rettetast (talk) 18:28, 30 April 2015 (UTC)

WP:NFCC#10c. Thsi is a non free image that only can be used on wikipedia in accordance to the NFCC - policy. Since there was no explanation why it met the criteria I removed it from that article, and probably a bunch of others. Rettetast (talk) 09:13, 10 May 2015 (UTC)

Recent edit to Operation Barbarossa

The chances anyone holds copyright to this particular photo and are willing to enforce it are essentially 0 given the context.

That is only one of the reasons why we have a very strict policy on non-free images. If we are going to build free content, we have to limit the use of copyrighted material. I am prbably going to remove that image again. Rettetast (talk) 09:16, 10 May 2015 (UTC)

Can I ask why you removed File:Florida Gators Woodmark Logo.png from all of the Florida Gators season articles? I was under the impression that it was fair use because it was just stylized text, is that not the case? Strictly Come Dancing (series 13)

I've given you seven examples, happening in barely more than a week, of obvious and persistent vandalism to this article. There's more if you look in the edit history, including one made since I made the most recent protection request. A previous temporary semi-protection of two weeks was granted on the basis of similarly persistent, near-identical vandalistic edits; once that expired the vandalism started again more or less immediately. Please explain why this article doesn't qualify for protection, as to say that "most of the edits are not vandalism" is blatantly untrue. Cwmxii (talk) 14:45, 12 October 2015 (UTC)

Extended confirmed protection

Hello, Rettetast. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
  • A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.

A new user right for New Page Patrollers

Hi Rettetast.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However,due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.
