Well, green on green is hard to see, and I imagine the difference can be impossible for some people to make out. Of course, I think all the maps should be changed, not just one. Yes, I'm thinking of cleaning up that article and another one I've written. I will do it later, since I'm out of time these days. That article was based on a Spanish printed source and it contained several informal and gaucho slangs so it was very very difficult to translate and get the information organized. Templates and Categories

Regarding your question on WP:CFD...I'm not an expert but I believe you need to do an edit of some kind to the pages that have the template on them in order to get the category to update. What will kill Wikipedia

I agree entirely on what you are saying. The vandals always make big edits people know not to trust and are reverted quickly. Accuracy is no problem in long, looked-at articles (stubs are a different matter). But server size and lack of volunteers is a major threat. Unfortunatly life indeed does love irony; and there's only so much server room. Which means I can't say with any certainty that your prediction is wrong (I hope it is). List of national coats of arms

Best to break them out into a seperate list like List of non-sovereign nation flags. Certainly basing the main list on List of Soverign states does make life much easier from the POV side of things. You might like to add a comment to Talk:List of sovereign states (where I have mentioned you name) because if a line was added to that, then a link to "flags of" and "coat of arms of" might be the solution for both. Sure Renata, I'll try to dig and come up with something. It's just something I knew all my life. The expellees were settled in the southern parts of former East Prussia. In fact, half of the population of the Warmińsko-Mazurskie Voivodship is descended from the expellees from Lithuania. My dentist's family was settled in Lidzbark Warmiński for example. RE: Some strange festival

Unfortunately, I can't answer with any "correct" answer, as I haven't specifically studied ancient Latvian traditions and festivals. However, my common sense tells me this was probably meant to be Katrīnas diena ('the day of Katrina', which nevertheless ocurs in November 25, not November 5), but I have never ever heard of any festivals associated with this date.

For determining sockpuppetry, you have to be a bit of a detective. You have to look at the timestamps of the edits, the area of the edits and the nature of the edits. Over time, patterns start to show themselves. For instance, Diacrit never discussed his edits at all. Does the new guy edit this way? Even so, it is an inexact science. Until it is clear, the best way to act in good faith is to treat the suspected sockpuppet as a different user. If the user vandalises, he gets warned 1, 2 or 3 times (depending on the nature of the vandalism) and gets blocked in turn if they continue. If a new one pops up immediately after that doing the same things, then the indefblockeduser and sockpuppet templates come into play. If the puppets (or their bots) are attacking just one page, or a small suite of pages over and over sometimes temp protecting the page(s) is a time saving option. Urgent vandal help needed

Diacrit (talk • contribs • logs • block user • block log) (blocked) - persistent user who creates numerous user names to remove Template:Foreignchar from various articles. Created user names include: User:Jeaijij, User:Agraman, User:Oagafauou, User:Qesecaue, User:Uefot, User:Huaelo, User:Bifo, User:Timoa, User:Feoouubiao, User:Eooaqinol, User:Xeuuces, and that's only ones I have caught on recent changes page. Fair use for coa

You wrote (on my talk page): Thanks for your answer fair use for coa, but I am bringing this here. Hope you don't mind. I have uploaded all the coa's in List of cities in Lithuania and some more. But what I should do now? Redraw them? Most of them are from geraldika.ru, ngw.nl, litva.lt, or crwflags.com. Very few are from gov sites.

Note: I have no idea what is fair use (even though I have read the wiki article about it) and I hate law. So if you could just tell me what to do... :) Also my graphic abilities on scale from 0 to 10 are about 1. So redrawing them is not really an option for me. I don't have a simple answer. You could ask for someone qualified to redraw them; or you could post this to Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Fair use and ask for a clearer guideline there; or you could use a template which claims fair use and try to proved a proper rationale; or you could not have images of the coats of arms.

Fair use is a tricky but important legal doctrine in US copyright law. It says that when you use a limited amout of an admittedly copyrighted work for a proper purpose, in a way that doesn't hurt the copyright owner too much, you are acting leagally. Ther is no automatic formula for what is and what sin't fair use. The only way you know for sure that soemthing is fair use is if soemone sues you for copyright infringmenbt, you defend on the grounds of fair use, adn the court rules in your favor. it is very much a case by case question, and depends hevily on the facts of the particular case. You can be almost sure if soemone esle has used a simialr copyrighted work in much the same way, and has won in court. If there has been no court case very similer to yours, then you have to tro ro reason from less similar cases, adn guess what the court would do if you were sued. Fair use is a defense, which means it is only raised by someone who has been sued for copyright infringment. The classic form of fair use is a book reviewer who quotes passages from the book under reveiw to analyze them, or the teacher who makes copies of a passage for his class, to serve as the basis for a lesson or discussion. Note that in both cases the person using the copyrighted work is analyzing or discussing thst work, not just copying it. Note also that neither uses the whole work, only a small part of it. Note that neither is at all likely to hurt the comercial intersts of the copyright holder -- people will not refrain from buying a book because they can read a reveiw instead. Note also that both uses are of a kind generally considered socially beneficial. These are the kinds of factors considered when determing whether a use of copyrighted materiel is fair use.

Wikipedia tends to be suspicious of fair use, partly because it is often claimed by people who realy mean "I don't have any right to use this, but i want to and don't think it does any harm". Also, sicne part of what makes soemthign fair use is whether it is being used in a commercial setting, contet that is acceptable fair use for wikipedia itself might not be for comercial mirrors and re-users of wikipedia content. Also fair use is specific to US copyright law, and similar concepts in the laws of other countries where they exist, are much more restrictive. Because of all of this, our fair use policies are rather more restritive than the law probably requires.

Well in traditional heraldry, the only official think is the balzon, the written description, and different heraldic artists can do different versions of the CoA which all match the blazon, but are not identical in artistic detail, and which would be subject to copyright by the artist or the artist's employer. In more modern use, particuarlly by a goverment or institution, the actual visual form would be official, and all correct versions would be direct copies. In the latter case there is less of a copyright issue, IMO.

I think CoA's probably are "State symbols" under the above law, but not every country has that law -- some claim copyright in state symbols, I think. I think the above law would be reason enouigh to create {{tl:LithuanianStateSymbol}} which would declare that anything taggeds with it was a Lithuanian state symbol, and exempt from copyright under that law. if you send me the details on the source of the law (so that I can cite it proerply -- I mean it's official titel or number or whatever, and where you got the official translation) I will create that template, and that will solve the probelm for Lithuanian governmental CoAs. A to your comments - I must say that I'm quite puzzled as I remember the whole thing differently. I listened to all proposals and decided to stay with mine. Anyway, it's kind of sad when people remember you as the person to refuse to accept some crazed users trying to pretend that the city in question was Lithuanian since times immemorial and not as the guy who wrote most of the article on Vilnius, or whatever you want to call that city. Lithuanian Copyright symbols

I noticed your post regarding Lithuanian law and copyright. This is probably farfetched but I was wondering if Latvia passed similar laws. See, I am trying to upload the flag of Courland,http://www.crwflags.com/fotw/flags/lv-cour.html, but it appears that copyright would prohibit it unless a special case would apply. The flag is sourced from a 1936 book, and is of a former nation. So I don't know if it would qualify even with the law, or if it would qualify because it is no longer a nation. Hello. I would like to inform you that there is an ongoing discussion at article Territorial claims of the Baltic States (formerly was known as "Lost territories of the Baltic States", but was recently renamed; some users seems to disagree with that renaming). Recent edits as well were accused of POV, and, in fact, article was disputed for a long time already. There are currently no Lithuanian contributors to that article, therefore your opinion is much needed. It would be nice if you would add that article to your watchlist and continue helping to improve it until a decition will be reached about its future (there is currently a poll about it in the article's talk page). Hi! I'm having trouble uploading my photo. The photo is in public domain. The image first appeared on Government public access t.v. Channel 17 in Burlington, Vermont in 2004. It was re-aired on C-Span as public domain. http://crisericson.com and http://chrisericson.com Every time I try to upload it I recieve a message that says: "." is not a recommended image file format. Subdivisions

Hi, Renata! I can tell you for sure that I do have that information. Problem is, it's very scattered and unorganized (which is, along with the lack of time, is the reason why I stopped working on the project for a while). The other thing is that most of it is in Russian. If you have no problem with Russian (which is probably not the case, because it's not in your Babel box), I'll be more than glad to ship you everything I have so far. If Russian is an obstacle, I can translate the bulk of the information so you'll have a good starting point, but that may take a while (and a long while at that). Please let me know what you prefer.

No, they are not exactly the same but the redirect is the best could be done now. You're right that all this is a bit confusing. The orders divided, joined and changed their names throughout history. To make it more complicated, the names and other datails are often different in various countries. Benedictines is one of the names used in Poland (and Lithuania ?) to call one of the Franciscan orders: Friars Minor. Wow, the discussion for some reason reminds me of that at Talk:Oleg of Chernihiv and Talk:Mikhail of Chernihiv. It is a mix of nationalism, Wikipedia policy issues, common English use issues, the terms used by other encyclopedias and literature on the subject. All in all, I believe it boils down to the general naming policy of Wikipedia, except in this case we are not talking of the name of a place, but of how the series of events should be named. I'd recommend to bring this to a higher level by initiating something like Wikipedia:Naming conventions/Geographic names; only, of course, it would be regarding the names of historic events.

I also choose not to participate in the discussion—partially because I am not so sure myself which name is better, partially because I am going to be eaten by both Polish and Lithuanian editors :), and partially because it looks like a time committment I cannot afford at this time. Polish monarchs

Hi Renata3, I think the situation with Polish monarchs is different. The naming has been giving historians headaches for a long time. There's no real consensus so we're trying to hash it out on the talk page. As far the the PoP/PoPLC is concerned, I don't believe Google results are the answer to everything. The argument I've been trying to make for not moving the article consists of two parts: 1) that PoP is a valid term 2) that PoP is used *much* more often than any other term. I provide the Google results to prove the second part by illustrating the overwhelming difference in usage. If there difference wasn't so dramatic, I wouldn't be opposed to the move. Regarding your suggestion to create a disambig page--even before the proposal to move the PoP article, I was going to create "main articles" for each of the partitions with links from PoP. But by turning the PoP article into a disambig page, we would have a disambig where other languages have an actual article. More imporantly, we would still need to come up with titles for the three partitions. I assume you would prefer First Partition of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth rather than First Partition of Poland. But what about the second and third ones, which occurred after the May 3 Constitution? Gaila aš pats užsiėmęs dar vienu savanorišku neatlyginamu darbu, tai laisvalaikį tenka dalinti pusiau. Todėl ir pasirodau daug rečiau negu galėčiau kąnors esmingesnio nuveikti. Dėl lito, tai aš šiokios tokios medžiagos turiu, tik neturiu litų nuotraukų. Bet tas gali užtrukti. Dar mano disketėje guli būtinos ir svarbiausios pataisos Vilniui, istorijos skyreliui. Ten yra didelė klaida, sakant, kad Lietuviai iškeitė nepriklausomybę į Vilnių. Taip tikrai nebuvo, bet Lenkams, matyt, šita versija bus patikusi. Taip ir nepaleidžiu tų pataisų. Voice samples

Hi there! Recording voice samples is fairly easy. If you're using Window$ XP, then you don't have to install the microphone, just connect it to the correct port (micro port, not the headphones) and it should work fine. If it still does not work, you might want to check the sound volume settings, at times the micro is muted by default - just uncheck the box then and it should work just fine.

As to the software used, I strongly reccomend Audacity. It's the best program out there, it's free and it's easy to use. As to the tips and tricks - after recording the sample, you might want to separate the stereo onto two channels and save only one of them in mono, it is much lighter and the quality is just fine.
