Reliability of old sources for historical events

Hi regentspark, and I hope all is well! I'm somewhat curious why you removed two sources at Battle of Trichinopoly (1682) here with the comments not a valid source (more than 100 years old). Please use modern academic sources for historical events and not a valid source (the person lived in the 16th/17th century). Please use modern academic sources for historical events. I'm a little confused about this; I've never seen old academic sources rejected as unreliable; in fact my experience has been that they are considered better than nothing. Modern sources are, obviously, preferable, but is there a policy that says old ones are unacceptable? The only policy I'm aware of is WP:RS AGE, which would seem to contradict your statements: "With regard to historical events, older reports (closer to the event, but not too close such that they are prone to the errors of breaking news) tend to have the most detail, and are less likely to have errors introduced by repeated copying and summarizing. However, newer secondary and tertiary sources may have done a better job of collecting more reports from primary sources and resolving conflicts, applying modern knowledge to correctly explain things that older sources could not have, or remaining free of bias that might affect sources written while any conflicts described were still active or strongly felt." My understanding is that older sources are fine as long as there's no reason to doubt their reliability and if there aren't newer ones that supersede those. Hi Eddie891. While you are correct that we don't need to use only modern sources, any article that only uses old sources is suspect. This is specially the case for subcontinental sources because most older "histories" were written by lay people not historians. In this particular case, there are other issues as well. The first source (Joseph Bertrand) is a travel account (written in 1854) by a missionary and not a history. The second one, and I honestly have no idea if it actually exists, is apparently written by one of the kings involved in this battle which makes its objectivity highly dubious. It is unfortunate that the other sources in that article are all in a language other than English and that makes the material impossible to verify. --regentspark (comment) 23:41, 14 June 2020 (UTC)

@Ajendra25: Youtube video links are not considered kosher. Also the other link that you gave is not an acceptable external link. You should check WP:EL for what is acceptable. You may, of course, add references to songs but don't link to youtube or some other site. And do provide a reference (see WP:RS to get an idea of what constitutes a reference). ‎Removal of sourced content

Dear RegentsPark, being a neutral editor, I invite you to kindly check out the recent contributions by Kami2018, who was already given "last warning" on his talk page twice for removing sourced content from various articles. He is currently removing refs and reliably sourced content from articles related to the Khalji dynasty. For example, see these edits: [1], [2], [3], [4]. In his edit summary, he claimed that the source was "not credible" (?), although historian Vladimir Minorsky, who is cited, is in fact one of the most trusted academics on the subject. Hello! You say Mahabharata is not reliable for Mahabharata's character. I wonder why? All secondary modern adaptions will tell you different stories. Most adaptions write rewrite the epic in their own way and also they created several fictional characters. For example Kavita Kane's Karna's wife is a fictional story. @Ratan375: Unfortunately, there is no original source. What you're dealing with is multiple, differing, translations (multiple, differing) of multiple, differeing versions of a text that was written (told, retold) eons ago. Glad you noticed, please take a look at this article – Zhao Yunlei, it's subsections really are not same like other badminton Articles in which they can be closed or opened as for ease in reading the whole Article. Regarding the sourcing for the sentence I added on the Kamma article, it is already given in the content that follows after when the caste affiliation of the Nayak groups is mentioned explicitly in the sources. Yadav-related PhD thesis - Michelutti

Hi, you queried recently the massive use of a Lucia Michelutti PhD thesis in Yadav-related articles. The thesis is easily accessible, which probably goes some way to explaining its use, but I said that I thought there was a subsequent book. I've found it now but there is no way I can afford a copy and I doubt I'll be able to get it anywhere locally (we have virtually no libraries near me nowadays, so even interlibrary loan is a pain). Mughal Empire Flag

The flag with the sun and the lion was used by the Mughals. I verified it from following sources

The flag of the Mughal empire is a rectangular green triangular banner with a lion in front of a sun, both motifs being gold. It is surrounded by red.

@Nemo 838: Wikipedia is a reliably sourced encyclopedia. If something is labeled "fictional flag", unless you can find reliable sources for that flag, you shouldn't add it to articles. Ah'm strugglin'

Hi, I am struggling to understand someone at Talk:Kapu_(caste)#Shudra_status and they've also posted quite a bit on at User_talk:Sitush#Help. My heart is starting to sink: they are so patient and polite but I'm just not getting it and I feel bad that I might be letting them down. This caste stuff makes no sense to me at all but this source appears to clearly say that the kapu's are a "heterogeneous Shudra peasant caste". The discussion you point to is very confusing and it is hard to figure out what the ed is trying to say, but this particular source does seem reliable. The writer appears to be a well established social scientist who specializes in Indian social communities (publication list). Yes, thanks. I agree that the shudra thing has to be mentioned because reliable sources do so. It's just that I think I am missing something that they are trying to explain. No worries, I will have a think to see if I can drag another name out of the hat - the pool of people with some experience of this caste malarkey and Wikipedia is pretty small. I read the discussion again (a cup of tea helps!) and I think Kautilya is right. The editor is trying to differentiate between a Kapu caste and a Kapu tribe, and wants this differentiation to be included in the article. My edits are heavily referenced. Scientific experimental work done by several researchers such as Nilesh Oak, Sudarshan Bhardwaj, Rupa Bhaty, ANila Narayanan have presented their experimental works and published them.

You cannot remove a scholarly consensus on the dating of Surya Siddhanta which is purely experimental analysis and Empirical evidence published by several researchsers.

Only the reference given by Mohibul Hasan is valid?? Mohibul Hasan is not only the valid historian about tipu. The records of sringeri dharmasthan is the contemporary evidence about peshwas. Why you removed it?? Why it is needed to show this much secular to religious fanatic like tipu. I have given contemporary evidences you should not remove that. Also, the citations for Dwarka are not new original research. They have been published in peer-review journals over a decade ago. Whenever people talk about the caste system among south asian muslims, they act as if the phenomenon is a south asian problem rather than an islamic problem. Need a help regarding article Allahabad

Hello Administrator! Hi. I would like to bring to your kind notice that a certain user named Kashmiri, has made edits to page Prayagraj that appears to be affecting the whole neutrality of the article. I do not intend to name any user in particular, I just need to bring to light some particular edits, done consequently one after one, that has changed some of the long standing status of the page. Firstly, the user removed the metropolis status off the page stating that it isn’t really a metropolis, without providing any reference to the edit made, while the Census commission states those cities which are in prominence, centred, administrative headquarters which have a population more than one million, are referred as Metropolis, and the population is already referenced. I have no intention to get involved in any conflicts with any user. I know and understand that he might have done that in good faith, I just would like you to only revert back the metropolis status of the page since the population of the city is exceeding one million, and it is a city of importance, I do not ask you or intend to add anything, I just want neutral data to be restored back. I even provided Government link for the city given on the Government Urban and Environmental Studies website about the stats of the city. Under Chapter 2, City profile, section 2.3.1 it clearly says ” Allahabad city comes under Allahabad metropolitan area along with Cantonment board and urban outgrowths. Population of metropolitan area is 12,16,719. Raghu Pati Raghav says that the hymn is an excerpt from Nama Ramayanam, which is surely inaccurate because the Nama Ramayanam does not contain that text. Cited sources appear to be WP:SELFPUB. Hi @Jenos450:. Couple of points. First, the book does not say that this is a popular name of the person. All it does is use the title in a paragraph, which is only to be expected since, apparently, both Chhatrapati as well as Maharaj signify a king. Second, the source is a book apparently published by a political party. You need to show that the author is a historian of repute. Regardless, even if you did, the book merely uses the term and does not say that this is how he is popularly known.
