WikiCup 2020 September newsletter

The fourth round of the competition has finished, with 865 points being required to qualify for the final round, nearly twice as many points as last year. It was a hotly competitive round with two contestants with 598 and 605 points being eliminated, and all but two of the contestants who reached the final round having achieved an FA during the round. The highest scorers were

  • Free Hong Kong Bloom6132, with 1478 points gained mainly from 5 featured lists, 12 DYKs and 63 in the news items;
  • IndonesiaHaEr48 with 1318 points gained mainly from 2 featured articles, 5 good articles and 8 DYKs;
  • England Lee Vilenski with 1201 points mainly gained from 2 featured articles and 10 good articles.

Between them, contestants achieved 14 featured articles, 14 featured lists, 2 featured pictures, 87 good articles, 90 DYK entries, 75 ITN entries, 95 featured article candidate reviews and 81 good article reviews. Congratulations to all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.

Immediate blocking of newbie user

Hi Red Phoenix,

I notice that you have blocked a new user who tried (very clumsily) to improve Wikipedia by making their very first edit on a page that I watch, namely International Bomber Command Centre. I totally agree that the username of User:IBCC Market should be considered promotional under Wikipedia's Username policy, WP:ORGNAME, and should be changed. But that very same policy says that "Users who adopt such usernames, but who are not editing problematically in related articles, should not be blocked. Instead, they should be gently encouraged to change their username."

Given that the user did not understand how to upload a photo to Wikipedia, it seems likely that they will also not understand how to respond to the template that you posted on their talkpage.

I would offer to help them change the username, but of course I can't add to their talk page because they are now blocked. Are you willing to reconsider and unblock them for say a week, so that one of us can talk to them as recommended in the policy WP:BADNAME?

(talk page stalker) @Hallucegenia: You should still be able to edit their user talk page; the block doesn't affect your ability to leave them a message, and in fact, the block doesn't affect their ability to edit their own talk page either. Additionally, Red Phoenix chose to implement a soft block, which allows the user to simply register a new account with a new username right away without having to worry about requesting unblock—this is explained in the block notice that Red Phoenix left on their talk page. If they wish to rename their account instead, the block notice provides a link to that process as well. As far as the username policy goes, I see this block as within administrative discretion—everyday we see a lot of organizations try to edit their own article, which is oftentimes inherently problematic because it introduces a conflict of interest, and I don't see this account as an exception. Hi @Mz7: Do I understand you correctly? Are you saying it's OK to block this newbie user because of what he/she might do, not what they have actually done? Maybe I'm wrong, but that seems to me to be biting the newcomers of the worst sort. What do others think? Maybe we should change the wording of the WP:ORGNAME policy, because it says there quite specifically, with bold emphasis, that new accounts in these circumstances should not be blocked.

@Hallucegenia: I do understand where you're coming from. Certainly I do not advocate blocking newcomers if they are "not editing problematically in related articles", e.g. if a user created a name that sounds like an organization, but the user has overall been productive and has not edited any articles related to that organization. This is not such a case. If you read the International Bomber Command Centre article, it seems pretty clear that someone affiliated with the organization edited the article to make it sound like an advertisement. When I stumbled across the article yesterday, the first sentence of the article described the subject as an award winning interpretation centre. The article goes onto use subjective phrasing in various places like one of the most comprehensive records and interactive and immersive exhibition. These phrases were added by same user who created the IBCC Market account, see Special:Contributions/2A00:23C6:61B9:DB00::/64. It seems quite likely that the interests of this user are not entirely to contribute to this encyclopedia, but rather to promote their own organization, and in general we should be discouraging editors from editing articles with which they have a conflict of interest. Hallucegenia, the block was appropriate. As Mz7 said it's a soft block so they can simply click the create a new account link. They don't even need to request an unblock. They do however need to declare their obvious COI. Glen (talk) 18:51, 4 September 2020 (UTC)
I was working on a response, but it seems I have talk page stalkers who have done so for me as well. My reasoning for issuing the block falls along the lines of Mz7's explanation, that and the username suggests it is promotional, that it represents the organization, and implies shared use. The lack of egregious promotional editing in the user's contributions, however, was why the soft block was specifically used instead of a hard block, which would have been a gross biting of a new user in my eyes. He declared the connection at the article talk page, and so far there hasn't been too bad of COI issues. Took care of it. The vandalism at the draft talk of the vandalism draft was done after the final warning, so that'll do it. I would just be careful if I were you on the disagreement you and this user had at the disambiguation page - those reversions likely would not have passed WP:NOT3RR and both of you broke it. I recently had to get an article out of deletion (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Louis_Armstrong%27s_All_Time_Greatest_Hits) and I need to get it updated and functional. Someone said it looked more as a promotional article without a lot of sources cited. @LukeLovesEditing: I've read over your draft, and I know where you need to begin. Let's start with notability - the core of whether or not a subject actually needs an article or not. Whenever you're looking to establish whether a work of intellectual property is notable (books, music, movies, video games, and the like), what will establish the notability is, in at least 90% of cases, the critical reception. How much have people who have an influence in the industry commented on it? So, for an album like this, none of the ratings on Amazon, Discogs, or eBay are relevant. User ratings people posted online don't count for anything. What counts? Opinions from professional critics or are influential in the industry. Articles about the subject by reputable people or publishing companies with editorial oversight are good, too.

For a music article like this, examples of notability-conferring coverage might come from:

  • Magazines, such as Billboard, Rolling Stone, Cashbox, or any other major music magazine publication. You might be able to find some available to read online in the texts section of the Internet Archive.
  • Company websites from said magazines, as well as from news agencies such as the BBC, CNN, etc. Check the publisher of websites and make sure your story isn't by a non-staff member who just wrote something for a website one day.
  • WP:JAZZ#Possible sources might be helpful as well.

I'm not truly a music editor, though, so I might contact a WikiProject or I'd also recommend Ritchie333 as someone who knows much more about music articles and sourcing than I do. That being said: I hate being the bearer of bad news, but compilation albums rarely get articles. Why? They usually don't have coverage of themselves critically. That Louis Armstrong is notable himself does not necessarily mean a compilation article of his works is notable, as notability is not inherited. The master key is this: Always base your articles on the sources you find first, not the other way around.

On promotional tone - WP:TONE would help here. Phrases such as "Many people enjoyed this album as most of the critical reception was great. As you'll see below, there were good sales and many positive reviews surrounding this album." are immediate red flags. How can you say the critical reception was great, and how do you define great? You can say it received positive reviews, but we've already discussed what "critical reception" needs to be. "As you'll see below" is also a red flag as not encyclopedic tone, and again, "good sales" and "many positive reviews" are subjective terms. That's what makes it sound promotional - keep the tone objective.

  • There is no specific set of sales, but it had a good reputation within the jazz community. The song most likely had a few hundred thousand sales, but we cannot tell since there is no website that specifically tells us how many sales there are. - That is original research, and is not allowed. If it can't be sourced, don't speculate on it. Briefly, I'll share with you some advice I received in my first year here in 2008: Treat Wikipedia like you're writing a paper at school. Cite your sources, don't plagiarize, and state the facts and be explicit when you're quoting someone's opinion.

Hopefully that will be a good start. I would start with finding some new sources first on your draft, and see if an article could be made from it. Possible block evasion

I see you blocked User:119.235.251.172 for vandalism -- thanks for that. I think the user may be evading the block, given the edit and edit summaries of these two edits, which both edits insert the word "The" before the subject name on Early modern warfare.

@A D Monroe III: It's probably the same editor, though it may not necessarily be "evasion" if the user is on a dynamic IP address. That being said, the edits are stale now that I'm getting to this, so I'd just report to AIV if they're evading the block. Being blocked means you shouldn't get to continue to edit if your IP changes, but with dynamic IPs, it needs to be a quick response to have any effect, otherwise when the user comes online they'll have a different IP each time. I'm not an admin who's around all the time, so just go to AIV if it happens again. Red Phoenix talk 00:21, 11 October 2020 (UTC)

Harris & Klebold article

As you did the GA review, I am curious of your opinion here. Should not anything salvageable from that article be put on the article for the massacre? That's the reason anybody cares to know their name. Most of the article is just copy-paste from there. Frankly, I would say anybody who knows anything about the case knows the purpose of that needless additional page for the perpetrators is because of the anti-hero worship surrounding them. It's on par with having an article arguing for OJ's innocence rather than incorporating that into the article on the trial (in fact, copied from that article), with additional trivial pursuit facts about his childhood by endearing fans. Or giving Adam Lanza a page. Cake (talk) 19:45, 10 October 2020 (UTC)

@MisterCake: It is honestly a lot of duplication. Some of it may be warranted only if that "anti-hero worship", as you describe it, has significant coverage it itself. To make an example from one of your suggestions, has Adam Lanza inspired others to commit similar crimes like the Sandy Hook massacre and been noted as an inspiration to some? Possibly, but probably not many. Have Harris and Klebold? Maybe, if only because Columbine was one of the first events to really gain such notoriety as a mass shooting in the modern history of the United States, and there have been "inspirations". But, I'm certainly not advocating that this article should be existing. As I will admit it's out of my range of subject expertise, since I don't normally do modern event and history articles, what I would suggest is get a larger section of the community involved. Either an RFC or an AFD would do, though on an AFD it wouldn't hurt to suggest merging whatever useful content there might be, as you're likely to get a lot of "Merge" !votes. An RFC might get a more in-depth look, while AFDs will get more comments and really a less-detailed dig into the subject. Red Phoenix talk 00:21, 11 October 2020 (UTC)
Appreciate the response, with some of the red tape on (potential) AfD, and interesting take on copycats. By my reckoning Columbine has more copycats than any crime there is. Hence the Columbine effect article, and a separate article on Harris and Klebold strikes me as particularly unwise; and the way e. g. Sandy Hook, Parkland, Thurston High, Dunblane, Luby's, San Ysidro, Hungerford, Westroads Mall shooting, Eaton Township Weis Markets, etc etc (Mitchell Johnson and Andrew Golden should be changed to Westside School Shooting) cover the perpetrator as but a part of the crime giving them infamy, with whatever media coverage was about them, as much wiser, and in this particular case as the one most needing to be aware of that. How many other perpetrators will you find childhood pictures of? Note how much I had to delete from their 'personalities' that was not in the sources cited. If "antihero worship" is too blunt, then to use the term the article uses; it's the superfluous "Columbiner" article. Cake (talk) 17:28, 11 October 2020 (UTC)
@MisterCake: It's worthy noting that this isn't the only article quite like this; for instance, Seung-Hui Cho and Virginia Tech shooting. So, it's not as though the precedent doesn't exist, but I'm unsure if the subject as a whole has ever been discussed, much less just Harris and Klebold. WikiCup 2020 November newsletter

The 2020 WikiCup has come to an end, with the final round going down to the wire. Our new Champion is England Lee Vilenski (submissions), the runner-up last year, who was closely followed by England Gog the Mild (submissions). In the final round, Lee achieved 4 FAs and 30 GAs, mostly on cue sport topics, while Gog achieved 3 FAs and 15 GAs, mostly on important battles and wars, which earned him a high number of bonus points. Botswana The Rambling Man (submissions) was in third place with 4 FAs and 8 GAs on football topics, with New York (state) Epicgenius (submissions) close behind with 19 GAs and 16 DYK's, his interest being the buildings of New York.

The other finalists were Gondor Hog Farm (submissions), Indonesia HaEr48 (submissions), Somerset Harrias (submissions) and Free Hong Kong Bloom6132 (submissions). The final round was very productive, and besides 15 FAs, contestants achieved 75 FAC reviews, 88 GAs and 108 GAN reviews. Altogether, Wikipedia has benefited greatly from the activities of WikiCup competitors all through the contest. Well done everyone!

All those who reached the final will receive awards and the following special awards will be made, based on high performance in particular areas of content creation. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, these prizes are awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round, or in the event of a tie, to the overall leader in this field.

Next year's competition will begin on 1 January. You are invited to sign up to participate; the WikiCup is open to all Wikipedians, both novices and experienced editors, and we hope to see you all in the 2021 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners, and thank all participants for their involvement! It has been a productive year for New Page Patrol as we've roughly cut the size of the New Page Patrol queue in half this year. We have been fortunate to have a lot of great work done by Rosguill who was the reviewer of the most pages and redirects this past year. Thanks and credit go to JTtheOG and Onel5969 who join Rosguill in repeating in the top 10 from last year. Thanks to John B123, Hughesdarren, and Mccapra who all got the NPR permission this year and joined the top 10. Also new to the top ten is DannyS712 bot III, programmed by DannyS712 which has helped to dramatically reduce the number of redirects that have needed human patrolling by patrolling certain types of redirects (e.g. for differences in accents) and by also patrolling editors who are on on the redirect whitelist.

CSDs of pages previously surviving AfDs

this is entirely incorrect. CSDs are not subject to IAR except in the most exceptional cases, and WP:G11 is not listed at Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion#Pages that have survived deletion discussions. Even assuming for the sake of argument that you were correct in characterizing a page that had survived its most recent AfD as purely promotional, administrators are not free to bypass speedy deletion criteria at will. For you to have doubled down when I pointed this out is inappropriate and not consistent with good administrator conduct. Even if your statement was just intended as hyperbole, it's both unnecessary to the discussion in which it was posted, and paints your willingness to apply CSD properly in a poor light. Such cavalier disregard for process--again, even just in a statement without actual misuse--can be a sign of admin burnout, which is a terrible thing that the encyclopedia can ill afford. @Jclemens: I will concede that I could have put it more eloquently, and I’m happy to clarify that no, I wouldn’t actually use CSD if an article weren’t eligible. That should have been obvious, though - notice I didn’t !vote Speedy Delete? That being said, you missed the whole point of the argument - this article has G11 criteria written all over it, and instead of arguing the article, you are arguing the process. That’s called wikilawyering, and suggesting I have burnout is casting aspersions. If I didn’t have any respect for the process, I would have just deleted it, or !voted Speedy Delete if I didn’t want to overreach. But you ignored that. I doubled down to make the point to you because you chose to argue back on process, not content. It is a perfectly valid delete !vote that makes valid points, and yes, if nine years ago had it not somehow survived a deletion discussion I would !vote to delete as a G11 speedy or conducted the deletion if someone else tagged it first. Again, maybe could have been more eloquent and clear with my choice of words that no, I wouldn’t actually delete it via CSD if it was not eligible. However, that doesn’t change my !vote nor invalidate my points. I am willing to discuss the article if you’re willing to talk about the article - on the deletion page.   • When blocking an IPv6 address with Twinkle, there is now a checkbox with the option to just block the /64 range. When doing so, you can still leave a block template on the initial, single IP address' talkpage.
  • When protecting a page with Twinkle, you can now add a note if doing so was in response to a request at WP:RfPP, and even link to the specific revision.
  • There have been a number of reported issues with Pending Changes. Most problems setting protection appear to have been resolved (phab:T273317) but other issues with autoaccepting edits persist (phab:T275322).

WikiCup 2021 March newsletter

Round 1 of the competition has finished; it was a high-scoring round with 21 contestants scoring more than 100 points. Everyone with a positive score moves on to Round 2, with 55 contestants qualifying. You will need to finish among the top thirty-two contestants in Round 2 if you are to qualify for Round 3. Our top scorers in Round 1 were:

  • New York (state) Epicgenius led the field with a featured article, nine good articles and an assortment of other submissions, specialising on buildings and locations in New York, for a total of 945 points.
  • Republic of Venice Bloom6132 was close behind with 896 points, largely gained from 71 "In the news" items, mostly recent deaths.
  • Scotland ImaginesTigers, who has been editing Wikipedia for less than a year, was in third place with 711 points, much helped by bringing League of Legends to featured article status, exemplifying how bonus points can boost a contestant's score.
  • Rwanda Amakuru came next with 708 points, Kigali being another featured article that scored maximum bonus points.
  • Ktin, new to the WikiCup, was in fifth place with 523 points, garnered from 15 DYKs and 34 "In the news" items.
  • Botswana The Rambling Man scored 511 points, many from featured article candidate reviews and from football related DYKs.
  • Gog the Mild, last year's runner-up, came next with 498 points, from a featured article and numerous featured article candidate reviews.
  • Hog Farm, at 452, scored for a featured article, four good articles and a number of reviews.
  • United States Le Panini, another newcomer to the WikiCup, scored 438 for a featured article and three good articles.
  • England Lee Vilenski, last year's champion, scored 332 points, from a featured article and various other sport-related topics.

These contestants, like all the others, now have to start again from scratch. In Round 1, contestants achieved eight featured articles, three featured lists and one featured picture, as well as around two hundred DYKs and twenty-seven ITNs. They completed 97 good article reviews, nearly double the 52 good articles they claimed. Contestants also claimed for 135 featured article and featured list candidate reviews. There is no longer a requirement to mention your WikiCup participation when undertaking these reviews.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of Round 1 but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is a good article candidate, a featured process, or something else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews.

Some new Sega info

Hey Red! Not sure if you knew about this, but parts of a Japanese oral history with former Sega employee Masaharu Yoshii (who's credited as the director of Sonic 2) from last year has been translated and an excerpt about Sonic 2 and STI has been posted on Sonic Retro. There's some great info, but I wanted to let you know that Yoshii mentions that Mark Cerny actually quit halfway through Sonic 2's development (not at the end) and Yoshii temporarily ran STI until a replacement was found, which the STI article doesn't mention. WikiCup 2021 May newsletter

The second round of the 2021 WikiCup has now finished; it was a high-scoring round and contestants needed 61 points to advance to Round 3. There were some impressive efforts in the round, with the top eight contestants all scoring more than 400 points. A large number of the points came from the 12 featured articles and the 110 good articles achieved in total by contestants, as well as the 216 good article reviews they performed; the GAN backlog drive and the stay-at-home imperative during the COVID-19 pandemic may have been partially responsible for these impressive figures.

Our top scorers in Round 2 were:

  • Botswana The Rambling Man, with 2963 points from three featured articles, 20 featured article reviews, 37 good articles, 73 good article reviews, as well as 22 DYKs.
  • New York (state) Epicgenius, with 1718 points from one featured article, 29 good articles, 16 DYKs and plenty of bonus points.
  • Republic of Venice Bloom6132, with 990 points from 13 DYKs and 64 "In the news" items, mostly recent deaths.
  • Hog Farm, with 834 points from two featured articles, five good articles, 14 featured article reviews and 15 good article reviews.
  • England Gog the Mild, with 524 points from two featured articles and four featured article reviews.
  • England Lee Vilenski, with 501 points from one featured article, three good articles, six featured article reviews and 25 good article reviews.
  • Sammi Brie, with 485 points from four good articles, eight good article reviews and 27 DYKs, on US radio and television stations.
  • Ktin, with 436 points from four good articles, seven DYKs and 11 "In the news" items.

Please remember that DYKs cannot be claimed until they have appeared on the main page. As we enter the third round, any content promoted after the end of Round 2 but before the start of Round 3 can be claimed now, and anything you forgot to claim in Round 2 cannot! Remember too, that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them (except for at the end of each round, when you must claim them before the cut-off date/time). When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met.

  • Wikimedia previously used the IRC network Freenode. However, due to changes over who controlled the network with reports of a forceful takeover by several ex-staff members, the Wikimedia IRC Group Contacts decided to move to the new Libera Chat network. It has been reported that Wikimedia related channels on Freenode have been forcibly taken over if they pointed members to Libera. There is a migration guide and Wikimedia discussions about this.

WikiCup 2021 July newsletter

The third round of the 2021 WikiCup has now come to an end. Each of the sixteen contestants who made it into the fourth round had at least 294 points, and our top six scorers all had over 600 points. They were:

  • Botswana The Rambling Man, with 1825 points from 3 featured articles, 44 featured article reviews, 14 good articles, 30 good article reviews and 10 DYKs. In addition, he completed a 34-article good topic on the EFL Championship play-offs.
  • New York (state) Epicgenius, a New York specialist, with 1083 points from 2 featured article reviews, 18 good articles, 30 DYKs and plenty of bonus points.
  • Republic of Venice Bloom6132, with 869 points from 11 DYKs, all with bonus points, and 54 "In the news" items, mostly covering people who had recently died.
  • England Gog the Mild, with 817 points from 3 featured articles on historic battles in Europe, 5 featured article reviews and 3 good articles.
  • Hog Farm, with 659 points from 2 featured articles and 2 good articles on American Civil War battles, 18 featured article reviews, 2 good articles, 6 good article reviews and 4 DYKs.
  • Zulu (International Code of Signals) BennyOnTheLoose, a snooker specialist and new to the Cup, with 647 points from a featured article, 2 featured article reviews, 6 good articles, 6 good article reviews and 3 DYKs.

In round three, contestants achieved 19 featured articles, 7 featured lists, 106 featured article reviews, 72 good articles, 1 good topic, 62 good article reviews, 165 DYKs and 96 ITN items. We enter the fourth round with scores reset to zero; any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Please also remember that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them (one contestant in round 3 lost out because of this). When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met.

  • Consensus has been reached to delete all books in the book namespace. There was rough consensus that the deleted books should still be available on request at WP:REFUND even after the namespace is removed.
  • An RfC is open to discuss the next steps following a trial which automatically applied pending changes to TFAs.

Technical news

  • IP addresses of unregistered users are to be hidden from everyone. There is a rough draft of how IP addresses may be shown to users who need to see them. This currently details allowing administrators, checkusers, stewards and those with a new usergroup to view the full IP address of unregistered users. Editors with at least 500 edits and an account over a year old will be able to see all but the end of the IP address in the proposal. The ability to see the IP addresses hidden behind the mask would be dependent on agreeing to not share the parts of the IP address they can see with those who do not have access to the same information. Accessing part of or the full IP address of a masked editor would also be logged. Comments on the draft are being welcomed at the talk page.

RE: Soma Games page

Hey Red Phoenix! :) It's been over a full year, and I have dilligently and patiently waited exactly as you asked for people to edit the Soma Games page so we can remove the peacock words and instances of informal tone, and hopefully see people start adding new information after that. Unfortunately, after more than 12 months, we still have had nobody find the article organically, nor have had almost anybody help to edit it. I have promoted the article on the Video games Wikiproject three times over the past year as you suggested, but unfortunately those received nearly no replies and only resulted in one edit over the year.

I've continued to monitor the page and resist editing any of it, but after waiting for more than 12 months under our original strategy, I am wondering if you think a new approach may be necessary and helpful for this page? Taking a long break from improving the page has definitely helped me to identify instances of unencyclopedic tone throughout the article, and to more fully recognize the overuse of primary sources. I've got lots of info or even just small tidbits that I would love to add to the article which are coming from exclusively third-party sources. There are even just small updates that would keep the page's information current instead of having its content stuck in the past. Let me know if you think we should re-evaluate our strategy for getting the page improved and updated.

WikiCup 2021 September newsletter

The fourth round of the competition has finished with over 500 points being required to qualify for the final round. It was a hotly competitive round with two contestants, Botswana The Rambling Man and New York (state) Epicgenius, each scoring over 3000 points, and six contestants scoring over 1000. All but one of the finalists achieved one or more FAs during the round, the exception being Republic of Venice Bloom6132 who demonstrated that 61 "in the news" items produces an impressive number of points. Other contestants who made it to the final are Gog the Mild, England Lee Vilenski, Zulu (International Code of Signals) BennyOnTheLoose, Rwanda Amakuru and Hog Farm. However, all their points are now swept away and everyone starts afresh in the final round.

Round 4 saw the achievement of 18 featured articles and 157 good articles. George Floyd mural Bilorv scored for a 25-article good topic on Black Mirror but narrowly missed out on qualifying for the final round. There was enthusiasm for FARs, with 89 being performed, and there were 63 GARs and around 100 DYKs during the round. As we start round 5, we say goodbye to the eight competitors who didn't quite make it to the final round; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia, and we hope you will join us again next year. For other contestants, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them.

Please join this discussion - there is increase in the abuse of Wikipedia and its processes by POV pushers, Paid Editors, and by holders of various user rights including Autopatrolled. Even our review systems themselves at AfC and NPR have been infiltrated. The good news is that detection is improving, but the downside is that it creates the need for a huge clean up - which of course adds to backlogs.

Copyright violations are also a serious issue. Most non-regular contributors do not understand why, and most of our Reviewers are not experts on copyright law - and can't be expected to be, but there is excellent, easy-to-follow advice on COPYVIO detection here.

At the time of the last newsletter (#25, December 2020) the backlog was only just over 2,000 articles. New Page Review is an official system. It's the only firewall against the inclusion of new, improper pages.

There are currently 706 New Page Reviewers plus a further 1,080 admins, but as much as nearly 90% of the patrolling is still being done by around only the 20 or so most regular patrollers.

If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process or its software.

Various awards are due to be allocated by the end of the year and barnstars are overdue. If you would like to manage this, please let us know. Indeed, if you are interested in coordinating NPR, it does not involve much time and the tasks are described here.

Arbitration

  • A motion has standardised the 500/30 (extended confirmed) restrictions placed by the Arbitration Committee. The standardised restriction is now listed in the Arbitration Committee's procedures.
  • Following the closure of the Iranian politics case, standard discretionary sanctions are authorized for all edits about, and all pages related to, post-1978 Iranian politics, broadly construed.
  • The Arbitration Committee encourages uninvolved administrators to use the discretionary sanctions procedure in topic areas where it is authorised to facilitate consensus in RfCs. This includes, but is not limited to, enforcing sectioned comments, word/diff limits and moratoriums on a particular topic from being brought in an RfC for up to a year.

Miscellaneous

  • Editors have approved expanding the trial of Growth Features from 2% of new accounts to 25%, and the share of newcomers getting mentorship from 2% to 5%. Experienced editors are invited to add themselves to the mentor list.
  • The community consultation phase of the 2021 CheckUser and Oversight appointments process is open for editors to provide comments and ask questions to candidates.
