Awards and stuff

Awards should be given carefully NikoSilver, otherwise they loose their meaning. You're very fast to award user Reaper for only one article, but you didn't even criticize him for calling me a fool and an idiot. Instead you advised him how he can continue using insulting words and get away with it. Very noble of you! Back to the rewards - I noticed that some users exchange awards as if they were baseball cards (It reminds me to Greece exchanging 12 points with Cyprus on Eurosong EVERY YEAR). I don't just give away awards, because they are ment to be earned - not exchanged between greek users. I could have given away and received a lot of meaningless awards (there are a lot of Macedonians here, but I guess we don't do that. Anyway, my N articles are in the Macedonian Wikipedia. Here on the English I'm forced to fight FOGOPian vandalism all the time. Finaly lets look at your advice to Reaper to refrain from using bad language. You only advised him that to aviod blocking. You didn't say he was wrong to do it. Instead you advised him how he can use "softer" insults and get away with it. And please dont preach me about WP:BITE and WP:AGF. Good job, for the most part. Let me give you a few additional hints:
  • Remove the copyright logo from the text of the image in the article. People may misinterpret it.
  • The guideline for pics is to crop them on the main subject. Do that next time with an image editor before you upload one.
  • Be absolutely certain on the copyright status of your image. Otherwise, wikipedia will delete it to save you (and itself) from copyright trouble.
  • When you want to indent your comments do not use tab, or spaces. Instead, place ":" (or "::" or ":::" etc) before the first word. If you use space(s) or tab(s) you get the following result (which I corrected in your comment above):
There's a space before this comment!
  • Use the "Show Preview" button to be sure that your changes are immaculate before you press save. That way, you (and other users) will be able to view a clearer history of the article (click it for Tsiartas').
  • Use "history" (top of article tab) to view changes of other users in your articles. Press "diff" to see the changes.
  • Change your prefs (top right) to "watch" all pages you edit (very practical).
  • Use a star ("*") before sentences to create this bullet effect.
    • Use two stars ("**") for this one! (and so on, as with the ":")
  • Press "edit" in my comments (or wherever you want) to see the code of anything you are interested in reproducing.
  • Use three apostrophies for bold text. Two for italics. Five for bold italics.
  • Draw lines seldomly (almost never). You only need four "-" to draw one line, the rest are redundant.

After extensive edit warring, article protection, and the statement of the extended version supporting side regarding both the name of the article, and the intro paragraph, a poll has been placed. Niko, been blocked from making any editing on your user talk because someone called testi 321 or something vandalised on my IP???(I am going mad with this), also why has mine and other votes on option#4 on the poll been deleted, the option with more deleted votes by pluribus than any other. Mine survived for like 8 days while others around me got removed than finally mine and some others got removed today for Suffrage!!! Article talk pages are for discussing how to improve the article, not for arguments about the subject of an article. Edits designed to "cause distress" (your words) or antagonize people of a particular nationality are simply not OK. They violate Wikipedia policy and I invite you to stop now. Feeling sorry about Slavs To claim someone's history, symbols and culture is bad enough, but ask yourself why they have to do it - the answer to that question gives me sympathy for them. Other Greeks have been born around the world but stayed Greek and encouraged Greek culture, non more than Alexander the Great who spread Hellenism across the known world at the time. Even if the UN, EU, Nato, all organisations did not agree with Greece - we would still fight. If they claimed to be the spiritual descendants of Alexander fine, let them have everything. This little American puppet state let me tell our viewers has claimed Greeks to be Africans in DNA tests, have said Greeks are not in anyway responsible for the Macedonian empire of the 3rd Century BC but only them - a bunch of Bulgarian Slavs who came down in the 5th Century AD and after. I say let them have their day in the sun, many on here have not even heard the Greek side or aknowledged the horrors of what their state claims about Greeks, a race that has given more to the world then any other. Indeed it was high, but not unlike most of the period between 1953 and 1974. Actually, the highest rates in the 20th century must have been achieved during the 1950s averaging about 10%. I think it was in 1956 when it peaked at 13%. Skartsis

Since when are the stars, the moon and other astronomical creations the property of one nation or empire??? NO obviously you are confused severely, what I am saying, is that it is a little more than a coincidence to anyone with 20% of a brain the fact that the flag of byzantium at the time of its fall to the Turks was a moon and star, this should not be grouped in the theories section like Attaturk's dreams, LOL. No, not neccessarily.. It didnt originate from the Byzantines [2], so it is quite possible that Turks got it from the other peoples of the Middle East and Persia before - please see this [3].. It explicitly states that this symbol has been assumed as being transferred via battles, but the true origin is the cultural movements of the Middle East.. Seljuq Turks and other Muslim Turkic tribes used this symbol on various occasions before the fall of Constantinople.. The word legends is wrong, this was the Byzantium flag whether it was given by God or originated in 9000BC, when the Turks came, that was the flag of the city they conquered - not the flag they came with, it is not a legend, King Authur is a legend - elves and fairies are legends, not the moon and star of byzantium that the turks saw flying on the city walls when they took the city. It is not nationalism, and I was the one who sourced the Babylon and Isis origins. Listen, this has nothing to do with nationalism or anything, I changed the section title to "Theories and legends". I agree that the dreams are legends, however the Byzantium bit is a theory as well, and your pushing it of as absolute truth is also POV - considering that crescent and star has been a Mesopotamian symbol for thousands of years (Isis and Babylon existed much earlier before the Macedonian invasions, sorry!). The correct place for that theory is under the theories and legends section, not under a section of its own.. Give me some days, there is not much in English because as you know in Greece, it takes years for details to be decided. However if it is done it will easily be the biggest metropolitan park in Europe as it is the site of the old airport known as hellenikon which streches along a large section of the athens coast. Well Kerkyra FC have on loan a player called vance sikov who is now owned by Olympiakos and before that belonged to Xanthi FC, also Egaleo FC have a defender Goran Popov, another FYROMian. To be honest all these players act professional and never mention politics, so all the fans leave them alone. REF IMPROVE TAGS

Now I think these were not correct due to the fact that many points made in the article are common knowledge, but before we get into that, surely you will be kind enough, (since you believe in tagging sections with no references), to tag these in the British Museum just to prove you are no deliberately and with British Bias tagging an article that appears to you to be bias. I hadn't looked at or reviewed the British Museum article and yes, I would agree that the refimprove tags should be added to several sections of that article- perhaps that will be my next project. If you feel strongly about them, feel free to add them now (I will not remove them, as I agrre with you), but otherwise I will wait until I get chance to also start working on that article. I don't think it fair to add tags and then just leave the article without working on it. You may have noticed that I havent worked on the Elgin Marbles article for a while, this is because I am busy writing a journal article for my job- which obviously (as it pays the bills) takes precedence.


I would also like to add, since you seem adamant that I am anti-Greek (or something along those lines), that I am far from it. Prior to reading the article on the Elgin Marbles I had no opinion on the subject of their return and knew very little baout their history. Upon reading the article, I couldn't believe that everything was so one sided, so started reading around the subject, and found that in truth it wasn't. Yes, the subject of their return is controversial and I agree that, in an ideal world, the Parthenon would have all its marbles still attached in pristine condition- but we both know that isn't possible. Please stop acussing me of vandalism- I have not vandalised any article on wikipedia- I have only provided a more balanced view- and if you look objectively at my changes, I have made both pro British and pro Greek changes and found reliable references for both points of view. Yes I am British and as such may have inherent bias, as you do towards your own nationality, but I am trying to keep that bias out of the changes to articles. The sole reason most of my changes so far have been pro British is simply that the article was so biased before hand, that that was what was required to balance things up. I would like to start working on the section that describes tha marbles, as that seems to be lacking alot- although this info maybe covered elsewhere on Wikipedia.

Hello! Good, if the article was not about that businessmen, I have no problem with restoring it. However even the football manager has no sources, and his claim to notability, while probably undisputed in Greece, remains be established for an English-language international encyclopedia. If you could find some articles in newspapers that concern him, it'd be great. I only tag articles for deletion in very rare cases, usually when someone is blatantly trying to promote himself, his business or some obscure local businessman/politician/etc. without any notability... I'll remove the PROD following your explanation, but please provide some sourcing and more info as to his origin etc. Otherwise it will probably get deleted either way if it ever gets nominated for WP:AFD... Thanks for the clarification. I was worried because it takes very little for certain members to report others. It is also a very difficult subject in general because certain members like Luxure and Taivo use original research and research from the country the Republic of Macedonia to go against the consensus of neutral sources. I think it is best to use neutral sources, however rarely if ever do neutral sources agree with the ideas and hopes of the slavic macedonians and that is where the trouble begins. They have had massive success editing wikipedia articles to their doctrines but unfortunately there are now some Greeks online who wish to reestablish academic consensus rather than original research and this is where the problems stem from. It is an effort to threaten contributors who disagree with radicalisms such as this of Macedoniarulez and/or Luxure (i believe its the same user). Apparently it is ok in WP to express the insulting opinion that Greek Macedonians are settlers in their own land (of historic Slav Macedonian Alexander the Great) and the terrorising opinion that Republic of Macedonia should annex Greek Macedonia because it comes from a small sympathetic (by the G Bush administration due to their symbolic support in Afghanistan and Iraq) ultra-nationalistic state but it is not OK to bring valuable sources about the indisputable Hellenic character of Ancient Macedonia, something unrelated to modern politics and does not insult or threaten any nation. Well I don't know what to say. FYROM did send troops to Iraq, 100 troops or something.. it makes sense the USA would immediately recognise the name Macedonia afterwards, which they did as part of the deal. Shame that appears to have spread to editors. Revisionism on here I think is here to stay, there is no point fighting it or getting passionate as the pro-Fyrom editors will play the victim and try to get you blocked. Taivo is far too strong. Best just to take it on the chin and not argue with academic sources, as that annoys them. Just let them change everything. When there is a civil war again in Fyrom, we can change everything back in accordance with academic reality. The US may love FYROM, but it loves Albanians more. Sad to say, I think it will get far worse before it gets better. The sheer dedication of the users insistent on the dehellenization of these pages is mind blowing. Adding categories

Hello. When you create a new category, it's really important that you categorise it to put it within the category hierarchy so that humans and maintenance bots can find it. Browsing the existing hierarchy or using WP:HOTCAT are both good ways to find suitable parent categories. In doing so you may find categories that duplicate the new one - for instance I'd suggest that Category:Christian cities in Lebanon was unnecessary when we already have Category:Christian communities in Lebanon. Thanks for the interest. Unfortunately I feel communities and cities have different meanings. Community by its essence is a poor way to describe the majority populace of a city or town. A community is a good way to describe a minority or a even a small populace - it does in no way describe a majority in its natural definition. Majorities are usually described as a majority. For example there are shia, sunni and christian communities in nearly all towns in Lebanon - almost unique in the Middle East - however - many neutrals are interested in the majority population in each town/city and this new category enlightens the reader. However this is only my opinion. I am sure someone somewhere would be interested to know through a category where each small or large christian community lives even if there is almost everywhere in Lebanon to various degrees. Caution about licensing images

It's too late now, but I hope it became clear to you that any image you license for use in Wikimedia projects is also irrevocably licensed for reproduction, modification, etc., including commercial exploitation and re-use. Empire of the Greeks

You shouldn't be surprised that your contributions were reverted. They had no sources and they made very broad claims, not only that the empire was called the Imperium Graecorum, but that "it was considered Greek" (whatever that means). Then on Talk, your first few comments also had no sources.

Your most recent comment seems to have some good sources for your point about the name Empire of the Greeks (though you could probably improve on them), so write them up properly in the Nomenclature section with proper footnotes (which you didn't do before). Don't make claims that aren't supported by the sources (e.g., about ethnic identity), and give the proper context (why did the westerners use that term?). Keep it concise.

Once that section goes through some collaborative editing, then use that fact to add the name "Empire of the Greeks" (with only minimal detail to contextualize it) to the lead.

Your "testing of the waters" was disingenuous. Of course any major new claim is going to be reverted if (a) it gives no sources; and (b) it puts content in the lead that isn't supported in the body. And then you re-inserted the same material, which is an aggressive move. Don't break the rules and then cry "bias!".

As for the "bias" you perceive, I think what you are seeing is the result of years and years of highly tendentious edits pushing nationalist perspectives (the Greeks are of course not the only ones who do this) rather than the scholarly consensus. Editors want to avoid any national biases, whether they are pro-Greek or pro-Albanian or pro-Turkish or pro-imperialist. New material that appears to be pro-X is immediately suspect if it is not well documented. Your contribution might have been in good faith, but you have just admitted that it was not.

Re: "I have no interest in perusing the matter however as I can see how the page is controlled." First, you are being too cynical here. It is not "controlled". Secondly, if you have no interest in pursuing the matter, why are you wasting our time? We are here to build an encyclopedia, not to fight. Sometimes it take a lot of discussion to get to a consensus -- admittedly, sometimes too much.

Re: "the battle is still going on as there is plenty of modern political aspects that have major backing". I think what you mean is that politics spills over into Wikipedia. Of course it does. Our job as editors is to resist that as much as possible. In many cases, we have succeeded. But it takes work and good faith.

Re: "even though we were on opposite sides" I am on the side of scholarly accuracy. I hope you are on the same side. I am not "on the Greek side" or "on the anti-Greek side" because that isn't what Wikipedia is about.

I encourage you to contribute to WP in good faith. If I have some spare time, I may try my hand at adding well-balanced material about the "Imperium Graecorum" now that you've brought up the topic. Incorrect edit summary

Can you explain this edit? Your edit summary says "correcting text to reflect link". Yet, the source clearly says that some Christian families volunteered their sons for service. And the source does not appear to say that it was Albanian and Bosnian families that volunteered their sons. The sources at the end of a sentence are books, but can be viewed at Google Books here and here. On the face of it your edit summary appears false (even deceptive?).
