delete subcategory megatokyo

Oh, and by the way, I discovered that subcategories are just categories which have been placed in other categories. For example, if I put Category:Pokémon into Category:Nintendo, it would become a subcategory. Same thing in reverse to remove them. - Vague | Rant 04:47, Dec 20, 2004 (UTC)

The Humungous Image Tagging Project

Hi. You've helped with the Wikipedia:WikiProject Wiki Syntax, so I thought it worth alerting you to the latest and greatest of Wikipedia fixing project, User:Yann/Untagged Images, which is seeking to put copyright tags on all of the untagged images. There are probably, oh, thirty thousand or so to do (he said, reaching into the air for a large figure). But hey: they're images ... you'll get to see lots of random pretty pictures. About finding specific categories

Use search, then turn on the "Category namespace" checkbox, and turn off all the other checkboxes. That will search amongst just the categories. (Of course, this doesn't work when internal search is turned off and redirected to Google and Yahoo!) -- Khym Chanur 12:09, Jan 17, 2005 (UTC)

Hey, thanks for finding that Cloak and Dagger (comics) thing. One comment, though: for Wikipedia:Copyright reasons, we need to keep the contribution history of any content we actually use in articles. So the right way to handle duplicate articles where you use content is to move the duplicate article to a Wikipedia:Sub-page of the Talk: page of the article (so people can still see the history) and make a note on the Talk: page that you did so, and where it is. See Talk:Cloak and Dagger (comics) for an example. (I have fixed this one, obviously, so you don't need to do anything more.) Thanks! Noel (talk) 14:47, 17 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Here is my solution: Use the Mozilla Firefox internet web browser, and then add the SpellBound spell-check extension. There are a large number of different word lists that you can add beyond the American English one that it ships with, so you can spell-check Wikipedia articles that use either American or British English. Hi, I finally got to this (sorry it took me a while), but it suddenly struck me that the article title ought to be "Argh! and Aargh!" Yes, but that rule doesn't apply to proper names; e.g. Yorktown, Virginia (which happens to be where I live) is not "Yorktown, virginia". I'm taking from the tone of your reply that you have no problem with me doing the page at Argh! and Aargh!, which I will do. (If I have mis-read, it's easy to move it back.) Stub sorting guidelines

I sincerely believe that we really need to lay down the law in stub sorting, and really provide a guideline. I believe that we should all attempt to reach a general consensus by April 2, 2005 in a set of rules that we can follow. Once we have built a set of guidelines, we can formally create a policy out of those guidelines. We need to define what a specialized topic stub is, how many articles it should cover, when is it appropriate to create it, what defines its need for its creation, what defines its need for deletion, what criteria it should follow, what are the general steps should one take when sorting a stub, whether or not to start using subst: for all templates, whether or not use subst: for all templates created by the meta-templates, and any other matters that may come up in consideration. I thank jag123 for initially creating the subpage for the project at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject Stub sorting/Guidelines. Even though they have been discussed, I feel that we really need to confirm everything. For that, we should discuss each issue with its own sections, and raise a list of issues that we need to nail down before really continuing on. The English Wikipedia is nearly at 500k articles. Either the MediaWiki software needs to handle stubs such that they can be found with a simple union of categories, or the sorting is done manually by Wikipedians. Personally, I think the latter is less taxing on the server load, especially when we use subst:, which I think would help the Wikipedia out, performance wise. I put the POV tag on the talk page of Hannerism because I wasn't positive the article constiuted POV. I wanted people to come and determine if the article is POV or it's just inherent. I'm not sure what happened to that edit. It was in stubs so I altered it to tech-stub but the history shows that it was previously tech-stub and had category and an edit to the name that put it in triple single quotes. It looks like I was editing an out of date version except I didn't go to the history (as far as I recall). I've reverted but I don't know exactly what happened. I've seen some other things remaining in category:stub that had been altered (I thought it was just delayed updating of the category. I wonder if anyone else is seeing this? I checked some more. It's like I somehow edited the original version of the article instead of the latest version. I don't see why category:stub would have a pointer to the old version. It would explain why it was still in category:stub instead of tech-stub. RJFJR 04:19, Mar 7, 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for attempting to identify what kind of stub "Metabolic engineering" is. However, it strikes me as less a biochemistry article and more a biology or bioengineering or biochemical engineering article. What do you think?

Pictures of Beer

Thanks for offering for the pictures. I'm personally of the opinion that a posed shot looks much better than a Photoshopped montage, but I guess that anything is better than what's already there. I thought the assignment would be taken up quickly—who wouldn't want to go to a bar and order a bunch of beers in the name of Wikipedia? Thanks for the welcome to Wiki. I've been looking for a couple of weeks and just trying to learn some simple editing. Your tips and links will be very helpful. So I was just wondering...how did you get to be the welcoming commitee? I certainly didn't mind, as I said, but rather I was wondering how people get into those types of positions within the Wikiworld. Is it self-appointed? I noticed that your posting was very similar to one left on your homepage by another user. Is it a "pay-it-forward" kind of thing?

Desert planets

I don't rightly know what to do with it, but asking around gets the suggestion to merge and redirect to Star Trek planet classifications. It strikes me as original research, but then again I don't know enough of the canon to cite. You're probably better off asking elsewhere or proposing a merge on Wikipedia:Duplicate articles and seeing if anyone argues, if you want feedback... Noted your comments about this article that some anonymous person had started but not done very much. I gave it a quck tidy to remove some factual errors. Even the title is unstatisfactory - it ought to be Derby Railway Works. I'll extend it when I have time. There should be plenty of material. After all its 150 years old! Just add a note on the relevent clean-up page that they are done and move the link from Wikipedia:Cleanup Taskforce to Wikipedia:Cleanup Taskforce/closed. You also need to replace any {{cleanup taskforce notice}} tag with a {{cleanup taskforce closed}} tag if one exists. I've done it for you in this case. date formatting

I reverted the format of February 11, 2005 to February 11, 2005 in the aticle Arthur Miller. I did this because doing it as one link, I believe (I could be wrong), inhibits the date format preference from formatting it. (That and that article February 11, 2005 doesn't have anything about Arthur Miller in it.) I didn't really understand that in this case there was an article on that particular date in history. Hi RJFJR.
I believe you are right that the preferencing is dependent on certain types of links at the moment. A developer has spoken on the issue, and said that this is a hack that he hopes to relieve us of soon. Linking and preference ought to be separate.
The February 11, 2005 article didn't (when you read it) have anything about AM on it. I am rectifying that defect.
As for having an article on a particular date - well it is a bit of a fluke. Some of us are experimenting with the idea of individual date articles for recent dates (jury is still out on what "recent" means - something like a year or two) and I randomly picked on the first half of February 2005 as a testing ground.

comixpedia

I left this at User talk:Hahnchen#comixpedia

I really want to vote to keep Syntax Error (webcomic) at AFD, but I can't quite justify arguing it. (It has two years existence with just over 300 strips archived. I'd like to argue that it's pseudo-3D appearance and use of Maya makes it notable but I don't have the numbers to back it up.) I think the google count may be a little low because it's hard to filter out the computer term 'syntax errors' and I don't trust alexa rankings yet, but I still don't have the nubmers to back it up.

I personally don't think it is notable enough for wikipedia. I know you have worked on the article, but it just isn't popular enough of have any sort of influence on the outside world, or even webcomic community as a whole. I do however, think that it's very suitable for comixPedia. I've had a look at some of the copied over pages there, and all they do is cut and paste. Histories etc are not copied. Remember to transwiki to an article named "Syntax Errors", the (webcomic) disambig is not needed. - Hahnchen 23:39, 1 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

String inverter

What I posted at Stewart Adcock's talk page :

String inverter is the last August 2004 cleanup entry. Wikipedia:Cleanup Taskforce/String inverter. It's been on User:flehmen/Desk and User:bananagirl/Desk since 9/19. But neither of those people is on the active participant list. Frankly that article looks hard which is why I haven't worked on it myself. Is there anyone on the task force who listed preference as something like I enjoy a challenge? You are right about the challenge! I get spasms when trying to read this article. Personally, I'd let AfD run its course before the cleanup taskforce worries about it any further. {NPOV} to Extreme Reaction Force

When you add a tag, like {NPOV}, aren't you supposed to go to the talk page, and say why you tagged the article?

I put the NPOV tag on this article mainly to ask other editors to examine it and reach an opinion. Actually, the verify tag, asking for sources, might be a better choice. Sysops can't do a lot of stuff: They can't delete pages just like that (except patent nonsense like "aojt9085yu8;3ou"), and they can't protect pages in an edit war they are involved in. But they can delete random junk, ban anonymous vandals, delete pages listed on Votes for deletion (provided there's a consensus) for more than one week, protect pages when asked to, and keep the few protected pages that exist on Wikipedia up to date.

Almost anything you can do can be undone, but please take a look at The Administrators' how-to guide and the Administrators' reading list before you get started (although you should have read that during your candidacy ;). I added the template for desk size and interests to your desk. You probably want to edit yoru interestes to be clearer. Tables of content appear when there are enough headings for it to need a table of contents, unless it is suppressed. I edited Wikipedia:Cleanup Taskforce/Loung Ung so the heading would be on that page and added a bullet in front of a comment. The current article has a few organization but they are all from Science Fiction movies/televisions series, most set in the future. I think we can find other examples to add. The procedure to nominate an article for deletion is at WP:AFD. Take a look through what has been nominated and how the voting is running before deciding if something should be deleted. (For instance, schools, no matter how trivial, almost never make it through AFD.)

In a few special circumstances an article can be speedied and deleted much quicker than going through AFD. The circumstances and conditions (and the procedure) are at WP:CSD (CSD is an acronym for Candidate for Speedy Deletion).

Well, I figured that, as the subject matter was drawn from comics (no pun intended), that the tag would be appropriate. I've also tagged a few other television shows, such as Smallville, and I believe I tagged the Justice League cartoons. I'm aiming to cover a widebase of comics, not just the characters and comics proper, but also techniques, artists, and related media, when appropriate. I was merely trying to be bold. New user help

Hi RJFJR, thanks for the welcome message on my talk page. I need a bit of help. I checked some of the faqs without success. How do you change a page's title? Or at the very least, how do you make it so that when a person searches under a particular word or phrase they are automatically redirected to a particular page?

Here's the situation: I have been updating many pool and billiard pages (at this point I have essentially rewritten the article on billiards). The article in question is "three cushion billiard." The problem is that there is no game by that name; it is always said as "three cushion billiards" (plural form). While I did read in a faq that article titles should take the singular form whenever possible (I suppose to be inclusive) this is not the case here, as there is no singular of three cushion billiards (actually, not to confuse but you can use "three cushion billiard" in very specific and informal speech i.e., "I attempted a three cushion billiard," but that is not the name of the game, and the game is what the article is about. The name should be changed and even if it isn't, when "three cushion billiards" is types into the Wikipedia search field, that article should come up immediately, not as a redirect link. Can you help?

First, when leaving a message on a talk page please sign it by type four tildes ~~~~ when this is saved it will automatically be changed into a link to your user page and a date stamp. It make it easier to respond to you. (The laternative is to check the history but that isn't quite as convenient).
You will be able to move a page once you have a bit more experience. A tab called move will appear at the top of the page (this will be available to you after a certain number of edits which Ican't remember off hand).
In the case you asked about I would suggest a redirect is more appropriate. When someone goes to a redirect page they will automatically be sent to the page it points to. Go to the page you want to redirect people from.
Enter the following at the top
#REDIRECT [[page to redirect to]]
save it. The preview will look slightly different from the result after it is saved.

In the event, I used a "request for a third opinion"— but I have little hopes there (none of the current gripes were remotely in the same ballpark as "architecture," so I have little hope of any interest). However, we seem to have picked up an occasional 'other,' and in searching through Wikepedia, I discovered that architecture is an 'inactive' Wikiproject. Looking at the erstwhile participants and querying some, I think we may just pick up at least one more 'other.'
It is a puzzle; how can a category with so many articles seem now to evince so little interest?

Finding a fun project depends on what you consider fun. There is a long list of requested articles, a list of requested images if you have a digital camera or equivalent, if you'd like to add to short articles then there are a lot of stub articles that have been carefully classified by subject. If you'd rather work on cleaning up or doing wiki markup there are articles for cleanup and to be wikified. What kind of work would you like to do?

Wikipediting seems to be addictive. I started adding a couple of minor contributions, and can see I'm getting hooked.

The Paragliding page is my first hint of serious addiction: rather than just adding a factette or two, I feel it needs some serious attention:

  • it is oozing with commercial external links which seem to be crying out for deletion
  • it has some factual errors (eg 'launching is usually done in anabatic wind')
  • various bits could do with a bit of editing-down ('anti-bloat'?) - eg especially 'Comparing paragliders to hang gliders'

Could you advise me whether I should simply have a go at fixing it, or is there some procedure I should go through before such cleanup?

OK, i finally have a question! As discussed at Wikipedia:Fair use, posters and DVD covers found at such places as the IMDb may be considered fair use at low resolution. Okay I've got a question for you about page mergers. The Sanguinarian and vampire lifestyle regulars are all up in arms about the proposed merger. There isn't any consensus on what to do, so I'm reclucant to change anything, but I also don't want to simply remove the merge tags. Well, that's the thing. There are only three or four people commenting on the merge, but they're all very vocal about it. And none of it is terribly recent either. I made some further formatting changes and spent a while checking the links. Some of them lead to disambiguation pages so I specified where they should go. Grundig goes to a German manufacturer, I can't find an article on the musical group of that name. I added a category (I'm not sure it's correct but it looks good). You can remove the cleanup tag if you feel cleanup is completed or leave it if you'd like someone else to take a look at it first. That James fellow again

I talked with somebody who's familiar with alternative rock named C i d. Both of us agree that Reeves James barely merits a wikipedia article. C i d had never heard of him, and did not come up with any information at all on him after a search online. Also, James is actually not a current member of Sourjane, as far as C i d can tell. Acoustic cleaners

Hello RJFJR,

Thankyou for starting work on the above page. I would appreciate your comments on how to proceed with cleaning it up and making sure it is properly wikified.

Currently i can see 3 main areas to work on.

a. Not happy with 1st paragraph....it seems a bit too dry...but need to think more on this.

b. Reading through the whole article it seems a little to0 wordy....will see if i can simplify.

c. Wiki links...plenty more to create but this takes time as i have to try and find the appropriate wiki pages.

Is there any other guidance you can give me please?

According to the discussion page, it needs a photo of a Toyota R engine. I didn't set the cleanup myself. I've taken the opportunity to do some cleanup anyway. Not sure how successfully. I think the cleanup tag can be removed. It's not a strictly unclean article. But the article is not in a fantastic shape either. It's a list of technical details with no real introduction of the engine and its new characteristics. Unfortunately I do not have that sort of knowledge and I was addressing only the cleaning issue. We might want to substitute the cleanup tag with something that seeks more substantial content for it. I am playing with the corn bread article, intend to completely rewrite it, and at that time corn pone should disappear. But simply replacing a whole article seems not tha thing to do by just editing out the old and dropping in the new. Can one write an article and ask [you - editors ?] to comment first? And by the way, the latest edit there was minor, someone changed 'skillet bread' to 'skillet brea'. I would strongly oppose listing it at AFD, or if listed, would strongly argue keep. I have added substantial info to the article to sastify the notability, and on the Talk:The Robot Ate Me page shown how the band pretty definitively meets WP:MUSIC. I'm surprised Ilyanep said he could not find anything! It wasn't hard at all to find the qualifying info on them, actually. Amazon has a number of their albums for sale, cddb has the info on them, 205,000 google hits, several national tours, etc... Hope that helps. Category Questions

I have a few articles to write, but how are categories determined? How can I add categories, and how to find what categories exist that are relevant?

Now, actual entry - Gordon Bok. Categories are incomplete to say the least. He is a folksinger, composer of songs, and so on - none of the categories of that type are there.

Finally, Category:EMD locomotives. If you look at it you will find for example under 'S' the entry 'SD26' while all others there in the list are 'EMD SD**'. Similar under 'G'.

Hibberts (Gore)

This is something I don't know how to do. The article is under Hibberts, but that is not the name, it is Hibberts Gore, some 20 miles north of me. Hibberts Gore is a Wiki name, but redirects to Hibberts. It should be the other way. Copy violation

Take a look at the talk page for Hog Farm. I have a note there, the wholesale deletion of the article for copy violation seems heavy handed, although as I note there the initial paragraph of the deleted part is a direct copy. If you are proposing they all be merged into the same article then I'd say put the discussion on the talk page of the article being merged to and put {{mergeto| templates on the articles being merged there. Withdrawal from cleanup taskforce

After a slow and tortuous stint on WP:CT, I've decided cleanup is not my bag after all. You seem to be one of the caretakers of the project, so I'll let you know about my withdrawal so you can tie up any loose ends you need to.

  1. I've removed my name from all of the categories on the participants' list.
  2. I've moved my three articles from "Assigned" back to "Unassigned": Bosnian War, Pāli, Ken McElroy. These may not still qualify as cleanup projects, especially Bosnian War, because several editors have improved the articles significantly.
  3. I've also noted my withdrawal on each of their respective subpages.
  4. I've removed mention of the cleanup taskforce at my desk, but I plan to keep the subpage for my other pursuits.
