For reviewing my DYK hook. Normally, it is good practice not to refactor one's post, but to use strikeout and correction. I try to follow that, except when I see a typo seconds after posting. I didn't do that in this case, eg ~~Taxas~~ Texas, as I assume that once approved, someone will copy and ~~past~~ paste the hook itself. I do know some are quite picky about refactoring after the fact, so I'm erring on the side of caution and mentioning it to you here. Thanks for your attention to detail, I had to read it twice to see it. That would have been embarrassing had it not been caught.--SPhilbrick T 16:13, 9 June 2010 (UTC)

Ninth Avenue derailment

Thanks for reviewing this :-) The explicit "should have seen the signal was set for the wrong line" comes from Reed's book - he points out that the track signals were located 500 feet ahead and says he "failed to observe" them, "probably because he was going much too fast to notice them." The contemporary railroading publications I cited all assigned blame to both the engineer and the signalman. As the first sentence of the paragraph states, the Board of Commissioners blamed the engineer more. The press emphasized his speed. While the jury blamed both. The engineer was a relatively recent hire who had originally come from St. Louis as a strikebreaker, and he vanished - I could not find sources saying he had reappeared, though Reed's book gives his POV. The signalman pleaded the Fifth but had told friends he felt ill and climbed down from the tower. So all the sources in fact say the train was going at an excessive speed and the engineer was partly to blame for that reason. (If I were injecting POV I would infer that he was "railroaded" in absentia and the signalman had simply left the switch set as it had been for the previous train while he snuck down to relieve himself or have a smoke.) If you look at the references you'll see what I mean - Reed's book (no Google Books view) says "should have seen the signal" but the rest are all saying "excessive speed" and the newspaper is calling for his head. So that's the way it is in the sources I'm afraid. I see someone else has now accepted it for DYK; if you still think the last couple of sentences should be tweaked, have a look at the sources and go ahead; I can't see how, they are all judgmental.Yngvadottir (talk) 04:34, 11 June 2010 (UTC)

I tried and failed, online and via interlibrary loan, to track down the book that has further details . . . apparently the passengers clambered over the balcony into a lady's parlor and she was irate. Tx for indicating the blog issue is resolved. I've responded further on the other issue. BTW -- I'm fine w/anyone indicating in the article about him seeing psychiatrists, or would be happy to add it myself if you like. I don't think psychiatric problems are the same as intelligence issues -- I'm not even sure that there is a correlation between the two. Anger management and spelling ability are two different things. I think that what we mean by unduly negative would be something like "Did you know that the accused person X is accused of drinking the victim's blood?", or "did you know that accused person X is accused of laughing as he tortured person z". Great. Many thanks. BTW, when this is done, we can have if you like a longer discussion on the (now resolved -- tx for the second look) issue of facts in blogs reported by RSs. In short, my view is as follows. RSs report all manner of information that, were it not in an RS, would not be covered by wikipedia. Comments by neighbors, by co-workers, by standers-by, etc. In addition to comments in blogs. We rely on RSs to be prudent in their use of sources. If they report what is in a blog, and certainly what is in a blog that is notable by wiki standards and widely quoted by RS media, then that raises it to the level of what can be included in a blp. That has to be distinguished from blog/neighbor/co-worker/standers-by comments that do not appear in an RS. Make any sense?--Epeefleche (talk) 23:04, 20 June 2010 (UTC)

Careful with your tags

Question on my talk page

Quasihuman I did it because of the inappropriate use of language and because on Lupin's Anti Vandal Tool the word he used 'suck' was flagged up and to me it was inappropriately placed there. I hope this clarifies the situation.

Sure, feel free to go for AfD, I'm not convinced it passes our notability guidelines (but bear in mind that WP:A7 is separate from WP:NN). I will just correct you on two points though, playing with notable singers/bands could convey notability (from WP:BAND: "is a musician who has been a member of two or more independently notable ensembles."), and playing on TV can also convey notability ("Has performed music [...] in a television show"). Merge "Insight", "Eureka effect" and "Aha! effect"?

I see you have contributed significantly to the article Eureka effect. I would like to alert you to a further article, Aha! effect, which seems to treat the same subject (both articles point to the same German article, in fact), and also itself states "(also known as Insight)". I, for one, find it difficult to see the difference between the subjects. Should all three articles be merged? --Florian Blaschke (talk) 10:04, 27 August 2011 (UTC)

I would agree with some of that, that article was actually the first article I contributed to, and I edited it last over a year ago. Maybe you could start a merge discussion somewhere about the title of the final article. Reading Insight, it appears that Eureka effect and Aha! effect are a type of insight which happens suddenly, so a separate article from Insight might be merited. I would support a merge between Aha! effect and Eureka effect, but have no opinion on what the name of the article should be. Quasi human | Talk 10:26, 27 August 2011 (UTC)

Well if you want to do the merge yourself, you don't need many people to comment on it. At least give watchers of the articles a chance to comment, if nobody opposes within a week or two, you can go ahead. The merge doesn't look that hard to do, I'll do it if you don't want to, but I think it should be discussed first at Talk:Aha! effect. Quasi human | Talk 15:17, 27 August 2011 (UTC)

Well firstly, thanks for the feedback - always welcomed, and I'm more than happy to discuss my edit, which I have now reconsidered and toned down - though only slightly.

Let me try to justify my edit, and start by confessing to some pet hates.

Given that this is English wikipedia, I feel that editors have responsibilities as well as rights.

So we wp:AGF and hope they address our concerns. When they don't - esp. if they continue their faults AND refuse to discuss them - then AGF is pointless IMHO. When they don't talk, I try to obtain some reaction from them, as normal means have with them proven fruitless.

Yes, they may find it a little offensive, but if they respond to say so, that's fine & I'd apologise to them & be friendly.

So often I find that non-native English-speakers seem to refuse to read or respond to normal WP warnings - as this user has repeatedly done.

However, thank you for expressing your concern, and I have as I say toned down my comments a little.

Ok, that's partly reasonable, but it has to be said that the user is a good-faith editor, I haven't seen anything in his/her edits that show any evidence of bad faith editing, most of their edits are minor things that need doing (he/she showed up on my watchlist by fixing links to disambiguation pages). I'm not trying to say that the editor is as pure as the driven snow, the lack of edit summaries, and the lack of response is of concern, but in general the editor is the kind we should be trying to retain in my opinion. My approach would be to encourage the editor to communicate,rather than warn them. I agree that this encyclopedia, because it is collaborative, needs users to be able to communicate, we differ on our approach to the problem. Sorry to bother you about this again, I just noticed that the user has started using edit summaries in coherent English.[1] I don't think that the warning is relevant any more, so can you consider removing it? The fact that he/she created an article in perfect English, and is now using edit summaries in English means that he/she is fluent enough for Wikipedia. Well, various editors have gone to some lengths, to engage with Flix11 & endeavour to persuade him to collaborate. Our collective efforts have resulted in 4 Edit summaries (ESs) out of now 29 edits since your courteous talk to him. Does it mean he read his talk page? Is 4/29 good enough? Has he engaged with us - written a response to show he can collaborate, has changed his ways & is henceforth fully prepared to co-operate?

I would say not. I admire your AGF, but I cannot yet match it. I need to see proper evidence.

You posit that he "created an article in perfect English". He wrote 1 article, and this is how he was content to leave it, seemingly. Well, I don't follow the sentences "At the drawing, the winner of semi-final 2 (who will play winner from quarter-final 2 and 1) have a chance to host if they clinch the final spot. They are Cerezo Osaka, Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors (QF1), Al-Ittihad, and FC Seoul (QF2).".

If Flix11 can read, understand and be bothered to ask for better treatment himself, then I'll be amenable to considerable back-tracking. Until then, I'm afraid I see no room for further movement on my own part. I respect your efforts & different opinion, though, and hope that you or others have more headway with him than one has seen to date.

Ok, I don't see that we're going to make any progress with this here, and I'm not inclined to take it any further, there is just one thing I wanted to say. You have mentioned AGF several times, personally, I'm nearly 100% sure that the user is here to improve the encyclopedia, given their edits. The problems with the user are ones of competence, not bad faith. Thanks for dealing with this issue with politeness and professionally, many users I engage with do not react as well when I criticize their edits, so its been a refreshing change. I received your note. The reason for the deletion was its lack of notability. It was tagged a long time ago for that reason: "The notability of this article's subject is in question. If notability cannot be established, it may be listed for deletion or removed. Tagged since August 2010." Do you have any new sources to change this other editor's judgment?
