Papua New Guinea

In this edit, you changed the capture of German New Guinea from "early in World War I" to "in 1905", which does not appear to be correct. I've changed it, but if the several articles in Wikipedia referring to this event are incorrect, please include some sources to back up the date.-gadfium 19:05, 19 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi - in fact I had changed it first to 1905 due to a source that said that date, as I earlier had WWI; and thought I'd put in the cite. Will try to find it. Maybe the sources conflict, if most say during WWI. Looked again; it appears I confused German New Guinea with the change in status of Papua. Thanks for catching that. Punctuation inside italics for works

Re: this change, it is my understanding that commas and other punctuation do not go on the inside of italics when these italics are formatting a work such as a book or film (and also applies to works in quotes). If the punctuation is placed inside, that is indicating the punctuation is part of the work's title, which invariably isn't true. This guideline appears to clearly back up my position. I started to sort out the Walnut Grove Correctional Facility page, and got distracted by other tasks, so had some edits cooking. The Transitional Center had nothing to do with the CF. Cornell didn't run it or appoint Sims, but I think someone a while ago conflated the two, confusing the issues. I think I may have tried to fix it at the CF or MH or CE article, but possibly Ns36 reverted my edit last month in order to wipe out some edit I made. I might be wrong about that. The MDOC hired Sims to run the TC, and the MDOC staffed it themselves. Sims' wife worked at the CF, I think maybe as the Training Manager. I'll sort it all out. Thanks much. (Insert)I know the Transition Ctr was separate from the WGCF, but it was authorized by MDOC, which leased buildings owned by McCrory for it. (according to at least one newspaper.) • You're right. The TC was actually run by MDOC staffers. I don't know if McCrory got Sims the job or not, but certainly he should have never been hired for it, given that he had zero correctional experience. McCrory did own the building, and the lease price was likely astronomically higher than going rates, since he was splitting the take with Epps. I haven't seen it in the media, by the way, but have heard that Sims regularly sexually exploited female residents, though he was only busted for one instance where there was a paper trail, and he pressured his victim to give false testimony. The WGCF facility was built back in 2001, when Epps was the Deputy Director, and he was Director when Cornell took it over in 2003. Activist (talk) 23:56, 8 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure "repression" was the only motivation for the Great Migration. A while back I added Clarksdale, Mississippi#The Great Migration and there were many reasons, although a desire to leave the segregated south was surely one of them. Cheers. Thanks for your note and your encouragement- I can add more reasons for the Great Migration - economic, shift to mechanization in agriculture, but the social repression and violence was certainly part of it. Captain Michael Healy

I noticed that you'd edited the Captain Healy article. It says that he and his siblings had passed for white. However his ethnicity became public after his death. I added the words "some of." I left this edit at the article's Talk page:

Complexion I recall that it reportedly was not known by his Revenue Service contemporaries that Healy was of mixed-race parentage until his funeral, when his sister attended and she clearly was of darker complexion. Attention: WikiProject African diaspora participants

Hello fellow project participants. Not sure how many users are still active as normal Wikipedia editors but felt the need to attempt to get a gauge on who can be called on for help with articles falling under the umbrella of the African diaspora project. According to the project's article table there are over six thousand articles related to the African diaspora; there's not a hundred at FA/GA grade and there's over twelve hundred that are unassessed. With Wikipedia being one of the major information reference points in the world today we should consider this unacceptable. Much work needs to be done on the rating of the importance of articles as well. With more communication amongst participants and a dedication to addressing the articles on the to-do list I believe we can make this WikiProject one of the most well organized and thorough on the site. If you are interested in collaborative work with some of your fellow project members, have certain expertise on any particular subjects, ideals on/about the WikiProject, etc. simply drop your name under the "Project revision" section I've created on the project's talk page and state your intentions and main points of interest in our WikiProject and we can attempt to move forward from there. Kirby Smith help

Hey Parkwells, I removed a line that you added to Edmund Kirby Smith in this edit several years back, as it sounds off. It's the line that says "His sister Mrs. Lucien Webster remained loyal to the Union although married to a Confederate officer, who died during the war." Francis Smith Webster was married to Lucien Bonaparte Webster, who had died in 1853. Do you happen to have access to a source saying that she remained loyal to the Union? Hi, thanks for catching that. I have found a source, letters between Smith Webster and her husband, which cover decades and were published in an edited version in 2000. He obviously was never a Confederate soldier. Both members of the couple were from New England: she was born in CT although she moved with family to Florida as a girl, and he in VT, where he grew up. Have now done work on both Edmund Kirby Smith and Lucien Bonaparte Webster articles to use this source and provide more context to both their lives and that of Frances Webster.Parkwells (talk) 12:47, 23 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

But you haven't emphasized Las Vegas by referring first to the Rte 91 concert venue; that just looks lame. Think about the readers; the important info should be introduced as compactly as possible. College Mound, TX = ghost town

Hey Parkwells, when looking through the College Mound, Texas article and seeing the "ghost town" mention I was confused. In my mind ghost towns have 0 populations while buildings remain. Reading the Ghost town article it states that ghost towns can still have small populations. Is there some official Wiki guideline as to what gets included in lists of ghost towns? Or is just a matter of a notable source stating it is a ghost town? For what it's worth sources online give a population of 300-500 for College Mound. Not sure I would describe Watson Brake as an "attraction", as it is on private land, very isolated, and the very few archaeologists I've known who have been there did so with special permission, a guide, and say the likelihood of getting shot without it is very, very, very, high.
