Welcome to the 2024 WikiCup!

Happy New Year and Happy New WikiCup! The 2024 competition has just begun and all article creators, expanders, improvers and reviewers are welcome to take part. Even if you are a novice editor you should be able to advance to at least the second round, improving your editing skills as you go. If you have already signed up, your submissions page can be found here. If you have not yet signed up, you can add your name here and the judges will set up your submissions page ready for you to take part. Any questions on the scoring, rules or anything else should be directed to one of the judges, or posted to the WikiCup talk page. Signups will close on 31 January, and the first round will end on 26 February; the 64 highest scorers at that time will move on to round 2. The judges for the WikiCup this year are: Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs · email), Epicgenius (talk · contribs · email), and Frostly (talk · contribs · email). Good luck! Happy New Year!

Happy New Year to you too, BuySomeApples! God, I can't believe it's been almost a year since we interacted. I hope we get to work together this year! Pamzeis (talk) 12:34, 2 January 2024 (UTC)
Me too! Although to be fair, I've had kind of a strange year. Right now I'm planning to build up some AT / Fionna and Cake pages so that should be fun. BuySomeApples (talk) 12:38, 2 January 2024 (UTC)
Admittedly, I haven't seen any of Adventure Time, but it sounds really fun :) Not really sure what's in it for me this year since it's gonna be pretty busy 'cuz of exams, but I'm hoping to work on more GAs or even FAs. BTW, feel free to drop by at anytime if you want a review or something, or even just to chat! Pamzeis (talk) 13:22, 2 January 2024 (UTC)
You should watch it sometime! The first few seasons are easy to pick up and put down, and it doesn't get lore-heavy until midway through. I'll definitely pop by to chat sometime, and I'll probably see you on an MLP page every now and then. BuySomeApples (talk) 17:23, 2 January 2024 (UTC)
I've told myself that I wouldn't watch anything super long TV shows until the summer (when I have more time) 'cuz I get addicted to watching stuff really easily (like, I'll watch it for eight hours a day). But maybe I'll have a look at some point, though. I'll definitely tell you what I think if I do. Pamzeis (talk) 05:47, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
I respect that, sometimes I have to take media breaks to get anything done. I look forward to hearing what you think if you do ever get around to it! BuySomeApples (talk) 12:49, 3 January 2024 (UTC)

Feedback

Hey Pamzeis. Hope all is well and Happy New Year. Not sure how busy you are these days and if you're still active in the FAC review space. Thought I'd ask, since your last nomination was a BLP of Mckenna Grace. I was wondering if you have time to provide some feedback on my current FAC. It's a short one (probably shorter than Mckenna's), so hopefully wont be too long to review. Totally understand though if things are busier IRL. Have a good one. Pseud 14 (talk) 19:09, 12 January 2024 (UTC)

Hiya, Pseud 14. Thanks for the request—the article looks really interesting (earning critical acclaim for her performance as the toilet cleaner is the most unexpected thing I've read in an FAC nom statement thus far)! I might be able to have a look, but I'm not the most free person ATM and have a bit to catch up IRL (if ya couldn't tell, I'm really good at procrastinating). Any review would probably have to come a few weeks from now and I'm not sure if the article would still be at FAC by then. If the article is still there, I will probably take a look, but I can't make any promises, unfortunately. I'm really sorry for not being able to review, but please don't hesitate to reach out if you need any reviews in the future! Good luck with the article! Pamzeis (talk) 13:36, 13 January 2024 (UTC)
Hey no worries at all and thanks. Been a few months since I was on FAC too, so trying to get my rhythm back and recall whose reviewed my work before :), all the best! And hope to see you back soon whenever you're ready. Pseud 14 (talk) 16:32, 13 January 2024 (UTC)

Your GA nomination of Shaylee Mansfield

The article Shaylee Mansfield you nominated as a good article has passed ; see Talk:Shaylee Mansfield for comments about the article, and Talk:Shaylee Mansfield/GA2 for the nomination. Well done! If the article has never appeared on the Main Page as a "Did you know" item, and has not appeared within the last year either as "Today's featured article", or as a bold link under "In the news" or in the "On this day" prose section, you can nominate it within the next seven days to appear at DYK. Bolded names with dates listed at the bottom of the "On this day" column do not affect DYK eligibility. WikiCup 2024 February newsletter

The 2024 WikiCup is off to a flying start, with 135 participants. This is the largest number of participants we have seen since 2017.

Our current leader is newcomer Generalissima (submissions), who has one FA on John Littlejohn (preacher) and 10 GAs and 12 DYKs mostly on New Zealand coinage and Inuit figures. Here are some more noteworthy scorers:

As a reminder, competitors may submit work for the first round until 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February, and the second round starts 1 March. Remember that only the top 64 scoring competitors will make it through to the second round; currently, competitors need at least 15 points to progress. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges (Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs), Epicgenius (talk · contribs), and Frostly (talk · contribs)) are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. February 2024

Information icon Please refrain from making unconstructive edits to Wikipedia, as you did at Paige Niemann. Your edits appear to be disruptive and have been or will be reverted.

Please ensure you are familiar with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines, and please do not continue to make edits that appear disruptive. Continued disruptive editing may result in loss of editing privileges. You have continued to remove maintenance templates while also appearing to add promotional content, e.g. removing content directly about Neimann and presenting it as if the source is not directly discussing Neimann, and appear to have used a false edit summary [1]. Beccaynr (talk) 06:11, 19 February 2024 (UTC)

However, I reviewed the source more closely, and have edited the text slightly into a compromise version. However, the repeated removal of the maintenance templates without addressing the Fan POV and promotional issues continues to seem problematic. Beccaynr (talk) 06:18, 19 February 2024 (UTC)
Hiya, Beccaynr! As I explained in my edit summary, I removed the maintenance tags because I believed the issues were not applicable (i.e. it was not written from a fan POV or promotional), and was not trying to be "disruptive" or "problematic". I'm not sure what content that I added that rings as "promotional" to you? If there are any bits where you feel that it's still promotional or anything, you could point them out and I could try to fix them. Thanks! Pamzeis (talk) 03:33, 20 February 2024 (UTC)
Hi Pamzeis, thank you for following up, and I apologize for my frustrated reaction to the removals of the templates - from my view, even this [2] removal had not adequately addressed an ongoing issue of relying on mostly interview-based coverage from several years ago to present Neimann as she promotes herself and has been promoted in low-quality, sensationalized coverage. From my view, the article still seemed to mimic some of the sensational coverage (e.g. "Niemann stated that she was told she resembled" ... "TikTok users dubbed her Grande's doppelgänger" ... "Niemann dresses and styles herself similar to Grande"), and then concludes by noting coverage of the OnlyFans account. I think it is particularly challenging to develop this article with the available sources - the sources tend toward sensationalism, and we don't seem to have a lot to balance it, and negative coverage isn't particularly helpful, especially for a mostly low-profile person.
However, I think your edits preceding the removal of the templates were an improvement, and I overreacted to noticing the removal of the templates again (while it was late for me and I was distracted, basically exactly what WP:SLEEPY cautions against), and the article has since continued to improve with further edits and the addition of context. I am still concerned about this article from a general WP:BLP standpoint, and whether negative coverage about Neimann should really be helping justify the existence of a standalone article, but for now, I think the article has developed into a more balanced, neutral, and sourced article and I do not plan to restore the templates. WikiCup 2024 March newsletter

The first round of the 2024 WikiCup ended at 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February. Everyone with at least 30 points moved on to Round 2, the highest number of points required to advance to the second round since 2014. Due to a six-way tie for the 64th-place spot, 67 contestants have qualified for Round 2.

The following scorers in Round 1 all scored more than 300 points:

In this newsletter, the judges would like to pay a special tribute to Vami_IV (submissions), who unfortunately passed away this February. At the time of his death, he was the second-highest-scoring competitor. Outside the WikiCup, he had eight other featured articles, five A-class articles, eight other good articles, and two Four Awards. Vami also wrote an essay on completionism, a philosophy in which he deeply believed. If you can, please join us in honoring his memory by improving one of the articles on his to-do list.

Remember that any content promoted after 27 February but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! About the genre situation

So you and me have been going back and forth on wether ‘a friend of the family’ is considered a psychological horror, my pov on it is that even though the creator had stated it to be one it isn’t publicly viewed as that enough to be labeled as one, it’s like how jordan peele has called ‘get out’ a social thriller film yet it’s more viewed as a horror meaning it’s called one in the article, I hope this helps the situation a bit better Pomniismywife (talk) 11:38, 24 May 2024 (UTC)

May 2024

Hey, I want to clarify on Olivia Rodrigo page - infobox instruments, you said that electric guitar falls under guitar and keyboard with piano. Then why you and other editors allow to post other musicians profile with multi instruments like Jack White with guitar and bass guitar? (bass guitar) is a type of electric guitar or St. Vincent (musician) with guitar and bass, do you know bass is an (electric guitar)? or in Bruno Mars page with guitar, with piano, keyboards, guitar, bass and ukelele (they it all belongs to guitar family)? Olivia plays piano to keyboards, acoustic guitar to electric guitar or bass guitar to ukelele. Why is it not allowed on her profile but its okay to post on others musicians profile? Please advice --Forgiveandloveoneanother (talk) 08:01, 30 June 2024 (UTC)

Hey, Forgiveandloveoneanother. What I'm trying to do here is avoid the infobox list becoming a WP:COATRACK of all the instruments Rodrigo plays; as instructed at Template:Infobox musical artist, nstruments listed in the infobox should be limited to only those that the artist is primarily known for using. The instruments infobox parameter is not intended as a WP:COATRACK for every instrument the subject has ever used. (emphasis in original) I think guitar and piano are warranted for inclusion as Rodrigo commonly uses them to write songs and as accompaniments when playing live, but I wouldn't say that's the case for the electric guitar or the keyboard. I believe she's only used the electric guitar when playing "Obsessed" and the keyboard as a substitute for a piano. Also, I don't think there are any fundamental differences between the way she uses the keyboard vs the piano (other than maybe the pedals), so I'd be inclined not to list it. Apologies for the late reply, BTW, I haven't been very active on WP lately. Lemme know what you think! Pamzeis (talk) 08:59, 2 July 2024 (UTC)

Women in Green's October 2024 edit-a-thon

Hello Pamzeis:

WikiProject Women in Green is holding a month-long Good Article Edit-a-thon event in October 2024!

Running from October 1 to 31, 2024, WikiProject Women in Green (WiG) is hosting a Good Article (GA) edit-a-thon event with the theme Around the World in 31 Days! All experience levels welcome. Never worked on a GA project before? We'll teach you how to get started. Or maybe you're an old hand at GAs – we'd love to have you involved! Participants are invited to work on nominating and/or reviewing GA submissions related to women and women's works (e.g., books, films) during the event period. We hope to collectively cover article subjects from at least 31 countries (or broader international articles) by month's end. GA resources and one-on-one support will be provided by experienced GA editors, and participants will have the opportunity to earn a special WiG barnstar for their efforts.

We hope to see you there!

Important: Please update user script installation

Hi there, you currently have a user script installed from Anne drew Andrew and Drew. Several weeks ago, I changed my username to Anne drew, and unfortunately, due to an issue with script redirects, the scripts you have installed under my old username no longer function.

To fix this, please update your JavaScript pages (Special:MyPage/common.js or Special:MyPage/skin.js) by replacing all instances of Anne drew Andrew and Drew with Anne drew.

If any of this is unclear, please ping Anne drew for help. I apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your understanding!

Thanks – Anne drew

WikiCup 2024 November newsletter

The 2024 WikiCup has come to an end, with the final round being a very tight race. Our new champion is AirshipJungleman29 (submissions), who scored 2,283 points mainly through 3 high-multiplier FAs and 3 GAs on military history topics. By a 1% margin, Airship beat out last year's champion, Delaware BeanieFan11 (submissions), who scored second with 2,264 points, mainly from an impressive 58 GAs about athletes. In third place, Generalissima (submissions) scored 1,528 points, primarily from two FAs on U.S. Librarians of Congress and 20 GAs about various historical topics. Our other finalists are: Sammi Brie (submissions) with 879 points, Canada Hey man im josh (submissions) with 533 points, BennyOnTheLoose (submissions) with 432 points, Arconning (submissions) with 244 points, and Christmas Island AryKun (submissions) with 15 points. Congratulations to our finalists and all who participated!

The final round was very productive, and contestants had 7 FAs, 9 FLs, 94 GAs, 73 FAC reviews, and 79 GAN reviews and peer reviews. Altogether, Wikipedia has benefited greatly from the activities of WikiCup competitors all through the contest. Well done everyone!

All those who reached the final will receive awards and the following special awards will be made, based on high performance in particular areas of content creation. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, these prizes are awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round, or in the event of a tie, to the overall leader in this field.

Next year's competition will begin on 1 January. You are invited to sign up to participate; the WikiCup is open to all Wikipedians, both novices and experienced editors, and we hope to see you all in the 2025 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners, and thank all participants for their involvement!
