Neal's Yard Edits

Thank you for commenting on the edits I placed on the Neal's Yard entry. I'm new to Wikipedia and have spent quite a long time studying what is acceptable, happy to take advice but, to be honest, right now I am stumped as to why someone would delete a factual fully referenced entry. Not sure what to do next, can you help?

Dante list

Oh, I think it will be a record slow time. The only reason is because I'm making the list by reading the poem (in Italian and English) a coanto at a time, then looking up references from the notes in my lovely little pocket edition. Given that I speak English and Spanish, but no Italian, and that it is about 20 years since I read the comedy, this is going to take me some considerable time. Others who have expressed an interest know where the sandbox draft is and have already contributed. It seems less than useless to put this list in the main space until it has some kind of reasonably useful level of content in it. I will eventually move it, along with the history, so that it is plain to all how long it took.

List of snakes of Trinidad and Tobago

Thanks for your comments earlier (even though I didn't enjoy reading them :)). I have gotten rid of most of the red links, and converted the "end of table notes" to proper footnotes while are hyperlinked, and thus are just a click away. With regards to naming, if I recall correctly, policy is to create articles at the "best known English name", or something like that. At "Tree of Life" they've been using latin names for plants because there are no standard common names (unlike say, birds). In the case of these snakes, some of the "common names" are actually made up by Boos. Others have several common names in Trinidad alone, and will probably have a few dozen more across South America. On the other hand, several of them have the same common name, and common names in one area might refer to a different species somewhere else. IMO, latin names as the best bet here. The SHC thing is in early stages yet, so I hope that the mini flame war (ho, ho!) will abate once people realise I'm not (consciously) pushing any agenda. It's a big topic, and (despite appearances) some authorities take it very seriously indeed. But, given the topic, it's something that is never going to satisfy everyone. Ho, hum. I do not repine. I have never satisfied anyone in my life, and I'm not about to start now.

new missing articles encyclopedia problem

Nice job on the Hutchinson 'pedia lists, I am working on another myself and was wondering how you get around the problem of deleting all the "blue" links at the start, as there will be 10's of thousands of them I would expect with maybe a couple of thousand "red" links? here is the text file, containing 40,000 entries, a small amount are duplication, ms claims encarta has 60,000 entries though, I guess either they dont put all on the net, or not all count as being encyclopedic. Big favour

Hey, I just made 3 more lists User:Bluemoose/physics User:Bluemoose/astronomy User:Bluemoose/chemistry, and am working on User:Bluemoose/maths. And i need to remove those damn blues, I tried the method you recomended to me before, unfortunately, when i copy and paste into word all the links turn blue (must have a different version or something), so they cant be separated from those reds. Could you please try it on the 3 lists above, dont worry about the formatting - I can sort that out really easily, I have put spaces in between with no numbering so hopefully your task (if you can do it) will be made easier when you paste it all back into wikipedia (as it remain as a list that way).

I think all you need to do is copy it into word, do your thing, then copy back in the plain text, i'll sort it out from there.

OK, it was actually pretty easy, User:Bluemoose/maths contains all the names, I tidied them up using find and replace in excel, and hopefully found all the truncated names, so it should be perfect other than the names are wrong way around, and blues need removing of course. Your POPBot seems like a good idea. A few thoughts that came to mind. (1) Is it possible to alter it so that when the open proxies are editing the test page they enter a meaningful edit summary. (2) Is it necessary to edit on a live Wikipedia at all? Whatever the edit summary it will inevitably clog up recent changes to some extent. Is there not a test site somewhere running the same version of Mediawiki that you could use? (3) Do you have any sense of how much of a dent this will put in the problem? Are there any estimates of how many open proxies are out there, and at what rate your bot will find/block them? (4) Do the blocks work across all Wikimedia sites or just on enWiki? (5) Not knowing much about these things, is there any danger that genuine users will be trying to edit from the same IP address as these open proxies? Good questions. 1) Not entirely since I'd rather not publish the proxy port and optional alternate IP for all to see until they're blocked, but I've added some human readable text at the front. 2) Yeah, I know how annoying bots on WP:RC are, but seeing as some people have been kind enough to block their open proxies from editing wikipedia this is the only way to be sure we're not hitting any of those. 3) A reasonably decent one I hope. I started doing this in january but had to abort it for technical reasons, and judging by the increase in userpage vandalism it caused I'd say at the very least it annoys people (those could have just been annoyed RC patrollers though :-P). I'm not aiming to block all open proxies, there's millions of those, but if I can block 99% of those that can be found on open proxy lists on the web, I think it makes life a lot harder for those that are trying to avoid blocking or want to puppeteer. 4) I'm only an admin here, so it's just here for the time being. Someone from a different wiki approached me about blocking open proxies there too though, and I'd be happy to provide lists to them or run the bot there too (the scanning phase would only have to happen here). 5) Yes, there are a few users who's ISP proxy are open proxy. We usually arrange for their proxy to not be permablocked or for some other workaround to be arranged; At the moment those ISPs have been getting their things in order though, because in the past few weeks two major ISPs that had their proxies open have locked them down. And of course there's a few people who run tor outproxies, but that's a rather easily solved problem, we just ask them to block the outproxy from editing wikipedia and then unblock them. --fvw* 14:08, 30 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The Changes you made recently to the IR35 page. You've removed one claim (that of over 1000 investigations, 3 were found in breach of the rules). The actual figures are 1161 and 3. They are based on investigations dealt with by various companies who advise taxpayers. So this is not just a 'biased' claim but in fact is documented and can be verified. In the absence of the any statistics from the government they remain the only published figures.

Further that a person caught (and therefore taxed as an employee). Under current case law this is again perfectly possible since under current case law no contract would be found between the worker and the 'employer'. In IR35 it is the very things that prevent such a contract which are ignored. IR35 does not judge on the actual situation but on what it looks like and makes various assumptions which an Employment Appeals Tribunal has shown a marked reluctance to do.

Template:Vanua Levu

Hi there!

The IPA pronunciation is not only on the Vanua Levu template, but on all templates relating to Fijian geography - about 10 altogether, I think. This is because Fijian orthography is difficult for Foreigners (c pronounced as th, b as mb, q as a hard ng, and so on). Personally, I would have no objection to the removal of the pronunciation tips from the templates after I have completed the articles (currently stubs) on the various archipelagos, which will include a list of the islands in each archipelago, with the pronunciation. You could n't do me another favour. I am trying to find a way of explaining how Employers National Insurance works on the IR35 page. Chris seems to be under the impression that a client may pay it when in reality a client never pays it (only the actual employer pays it)

Also seems to think that the status of the contract (caught or otherwise) can be determined in advance. Again this never happens because the status can be based on a) Contracts never seen by the worker b) the way the contractor and client operate during the contract. Promoted featured list

Thank you for your question, I'm more than happy to share my reasoning.

There were four explicit "support" votes and three "oppose" votes, but two of those "oppose" votes were for references to be cited. Before promoting I looked at the article and saw that a references section had now been added, although those two opposers had not cleared their points. I therefore considered their objections (insofar as they related to references) to have been met.

Of those two opposers, Ianbrown's comments (he initially supported before spotting there were no references) suggested he was strongly minded to support the list once it was referenced. This fact I took into consideration. Nichalp had another objection: he suggested that the list was not useful. No other editor expressed the same concern, and I personally disagreed with him - it is a list that is useful for those wanting information on the London Underground. Overall I considered that it was not a valid objection.

You yourself had two comments in your objections, both of which, indeed, could have been dealt with. The first, and main one, concerned whether a tabular format was more appropriate. Although a fair objection, it is not a "killer" objection - ie it is one that, to my mind, can be outvoted, and here no other editor also raised this as an objection. Thryduulf (the list's sponsor) did not ignore your point, but instead mocked up what a tabular list would look like on User:Thryduulf/List of London Underground stations in table format, before he came to the view that it was better as is. Your point about the length of the lead section is again not a "killer" point - it is one that could be outvoted. Having discounted, after careful consideration, the other two opposes, I considered that your points were indeed outvoted.

You will note that I counted three "oppose", not four. Although Susvolans made a comment, which could not be addressed, he did not oppose featuring the list. I considered him to be neutral, whilst making what may be a useful comment.

I did consider alternatives, such as allowing Nichalp and Ianbrown to explicitly remove their objections insofar as they related to references, or allowing more time for further comments or to see if your lead section comment might be addressed. But on balance, I thought that as the references point was so clearly already addressed, and the other objections were in a minority, the list had enough support to be featured.

WikiProject Theatre

Please check out the new design for the WikiProject Theatre page. You could say that "project page envy" led to the redesign. The French WikiProject Theatre page was much nicer looking than ours, so I spent a little time redesigning it. In addition, a theatre article assessment project has been started. This project aims to examine theatre articles, rate them and note what work needs to be done.

Rambot demographics to past tense

Yes, I intend to do a few hundred more manually then let SmackBot loose on a few hundred a day. I think this is the sort of thing people get sensative about, so I want to be sure it's as right a I can get it. I have a list of about 36,000 articles, in population order for the bot, and lots of smaller lists for manual work. Afghanistan

I notice that you removed the merger proposals from the pages for Farah and Qala i Naw. I have no particular disagreement with your action on Farah, but the action on Qala i Naw seems a little strange. In effect the merger proposal gets rid of a disambigulation page which disambigulates an article from a non-existant article. This seems to be creating disambigulation pages just for the sake of it. I don't feel strongly if you really want to merge the Qala I Naw pages. In general, though, I'm not averse to disambiguation pages where one of the entries is non-existent, as long as there's an expectation that it will be created in the future (and that should be our expectation with all geographical placenames). AskMeNow

Why is it that you would remove a link to AskMeNow in the 'see also' section of mobile search but leave the link to windows live search. How does that make any sense? AskMeNow deals specifically in mobile search and is using some fairly revolutionary semantic search technology. You've also marked the article for AskMeNow as spam. I don't understand, everything in the article is factual. The list goes on.

That was out of line. And it certainly does seem like you've initiated some sort of personal vendetta against the AskMeNow entry. The old entry you keep reverting to has incorrect information. The company changed it's name and stock symbol in December, the application offering has moved far beyond a single BlackBerry platform to include all major mobile OS's as well as a universal SMS product and enterprise search engine offering, and there is barely any mention of how the search works. Also, the company does have proprietary search technology. You're arguing, and I'm still not sure why, that AskMeNow shouldn't be considered a search technology company because they send back answers instead of links. Ask Jeeves uses natural language search technology to send back answers to queries... are they not a search engine? I've made many revisions to the article to try and make it acceptable within the "subtleties of what's acceptable". Please stop reverting to innacurate versions. I'd also invite you to try using both windows live mobile search and compare it to askmenow's mobile search offering and then re-consider who should be linked on the mobile search page.

I don't mind if you edit the content at all. I was frustrated that you kept reverting back to old innacurate versions or tagging it as spam. Since I added the disclaimer to my last revision asking users to edit content, a couple of users did just that. I took what was there and used microsoft live for mobile as a template. I'll assume you don't have a problem with that entry since you left the link to them on mobile search and removed AskMeNow's. I've done my best to only state facts. Falkland Islands articles

Dear OpenToppedBus, thanks for your comment. Regarding the suggested merger between the 'Origins' and the 'Falkland Islanders' articles, I am not ethusiastic for reasons that are both of substance and technical; indeed I did consider and disfavoured such an option in advance as I took part in drafting both articles, and the present situation and prospects seem to confirm my original reasoning.

The current size of ‘Origins’ is already 21.6 KB. Furthermore, the article has a great potential for development, especially its sections on ‘Late 19th to early 20th century’ and ‘Post-Falklands War’, with more relevant aspects, details and sources on the contribution of various nations to shaping the Falklander identity (something on which I am working together with JacobNapoleon). Along with that development (which in particular would entail a better balance too), the article’s length may well exceed 30 or indeed 40 KB, closer to the point where Wikipedia:Article size advises to start considering the possibility for division not merger.

Second, if merged within the present ‘Falkland Islanders’ article the 'Origins' one would account for over 90% of the combined volume, making such a merged article fairly disproportional. On the other hand, if the other sections of the merged article (culture, geographic distribution etc.; even history as ‘origins’ is not exactly ‘history’) were more or less proportionally developed to reduce the share of its ‘Origins’ section to say 1/3 or less, then the overall length would be more than 60 KB, at which point Wikipedia:Article size says ‘Probably should be divided’.

And last but definitely not least, at its present level of information content and detail (to be further elaborated) the article is already too technical for the general ‘Falkland Islanders’ article.

Regarding the ‘Demographics’ title; Wikipedia seems to lack a unified approach there, which seems a little odd to me; there are French people, Scottish people, Britons, Spanish people etc. articles, but no "American people" (US Americans that is) or "Argentine people" articles, only Demography of the United States and Demographics of Argentina — and both Brazilian people and Demography of Brazil, as if the Americans or Argentines are some collection of different ethnic groups and less of a nation than the French or the Brazilians! As a matter of fact many ‘Demography of’ titles seem to have been copy-pasted from the CIA World Factbook, where however they are section titles not article titles. New Look As mentioned above, the WikiProject has recently undergone a spring-clean and we're dead excited about it! No problem. I have a temporary contract at a public organization but I finished the necessary work a month in a half. I started rearranging the information i had gathered over the past 3 months on the common driver at work, but most of the people who work here check wikipedia before they check anywhere else, and its much easier to organize it like that. Hello! Voting in the 2024 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 2 December 2024. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
