Nicholas Bodington

Hi, I've been working on the existing small article on the SOE agent Nicholas Bodington to improve it. Whoever loaded the original article made the common error of miss-spelling his first name, it was Nicolas (without the h) as confirmed by marriage and death records and military service records. Please can you correct it but leave a link in place so that it can be found by people searching in either manner. I loaded a new article recently on RAF senior officer AVM James Rowland Scarlett-Streatfeild the last name looks strange but it is correct spelled like that, after doing it I noted that there was an existing 2 line "stub" with his last name incorrectly spelled, please can you remove the stub. thanks for your help. @Researcher1944: I think you are going to need to find more sources for your spelling of the names. For Bodington, all but one of the sources that I can get to spell his first name Nicholas. As for Scarlett, agian, most of the sources that do show both parts of his last name say Streatfield (even his gravestones says that). I'm not sure what source I would consider the best, but it does appear there is some question how his name was spelled. -Niceguyedc ^Go Huskies! 10:06, 27 September 2015 (UTC)

Fair do's, thanks. Out of interest Scarlett-Streatfeild's name has already been corrected by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission on their on-line database records but they won't change the headstone until it next needs doing. The officer's correct name was announced in the London Gazette in March 1939, hope this link is OK.[1] that also matches the 1911 Census of England & Wales. I'll dig out a copy of Bodington's marriage certificate where he signs his own name as Nicolas without the h - presumably if scanned onto Wikicommons an Admin could do the necessary ? I forgot to mention that both of the books which he authored (published 1938 and 1961) have his name without the h in Nicolas. Speedy deletion

I just started my page and you deleted it.... I am a notable legendary magician and human rights advocate. I am currently being attacked by law enforcement for my views on public servant corruption. I will also be running for President, which will also make me more notable. I have also been attacked on facebook for no other reason, then to silence me. Once it becomes known about my investigations on police and government corruption, they will try and shut down everything about me on the web. There is a contract out on me.... @BlackFox68: I did not delete the page. I suggested that an administrator should delete it because the article did not assert the significance of the person it was describing. If you want to have time to get the article together, you can start it at Draft:Frank Joseph Popovich, Jr.. Résistance redirect

Hi,

You reverted my redirect of Résistance to the disambig page La Résistance. May I ask why? You do know that "La" just means "the"? They're exactly the same term. @Brigade Piron: I have no issue with the disambiguation page, as someone searching for "La Résistance" could be looking for either the French Resistance or the wrestling tag team. Someone searching for Résistance, however, is clearly (to my mind), searching for French Resistance. Daniel Pedoe

Re your amend to the Daniel Pedoe article. As far as I can see, the Institute for Advanced Study is not part of Princeton University, although it is located in Princeton and "has links" and "informal ties and collaboration". The wiki article on the Institute says "The Institute is not part of any educational institution" and its own website says "The Institute has no formal links to other educational institutions. However, since its founding, it has enjoyed close, collaborative ties with Princeton University and other nearby institutions." These ties are not formal links and are not only, apparently, with Princeton University. For these reasons, I propose to reinstate the link to Princeton, the town, not the university. Any comment? @Charlesaaronthompson: Which set of buildings? The ones that were there before September 11, 2001, or the ones that are there now? There are two different sets of buildings. I would suggest looking at the discussions at Talk:World Trade Center to see the split of the articles. If you still want to move the disambiguation page, I suggest starting a requested move discussion at Talk:World Trade Center. Wondering about your edit to Friedrichs

Hi, Nice -- Friedrichs is a dab page with a see-also section that refers to Fredericks. You (or your script) edited it to refer to Fredericks (disambiguation), which in turn is a redirect to Fredericks. This doesn't seem to be a constructive edit, since it introduces a double redirect, and adds unnecessary verbiage to the page. You refer to WP:INTDABLINK as justification in the edit summary. Maybe that policy should be changed to accommodate links from one dab page to another. Whatever, I'm reverting the change on the grounds of the double redirect. @Eleuther: Fredericks (disambiguation) is not a double redirect. It is a redirect to the disambiguation page Fredericks. The reason for this (and the reason that WP:INTDABLINK mandates this) is so that those of us at WP:DPL (and the bots that help us) know that the link is an intentional link to a disambiguation page. At [1], an article all about a chemistry/allied-science topic, no way heavy metal is a musical idea. @Mike Peel: Actually, that part of that page is a policy - the community has adopted the policy of rerouting all intentional disambiguation links in mainspace through "Foo (disambiguation)" redirects. (my emphasis). Fair enough. One of my bugbears is when people refer to guidelines as policies, as it implies rigidity when it's more of a convention. Maybe in this case "standard approach" would be more applicable? @Mike Peel: After looking through all 44 archives at WT:D, there was no one discussion where it was decided to make WP:INTDABLINK policy. What does exist in the archives are many discussions about intentional links to disambiguation pages, and the large majority of editors agreeing that it is good practice to designate intentional links to disambiguation pages in some way, and that way is by linking to the (disambiguation) redirect. Usually, in my view, our policies reflect longstanding practice, and this practice has been going on for over 10 years (when there were over 1.3 million ambiguous links to disambiguation pages, instead of the current 66,000).
On a side note, the editors who, similar to you, have asked about why this linking is done reads like a Who's Who of long-term editors, administrators, and even a current bureaucrat. Going through the archives seemed like a walk through the history of Wikipedia.
The edit to change the wording to include the word "policy" was done here by BD2412. As I've now pinged him, I'll let him give any additional reasoning behind the clarification (as he called it in the edit) to the language of WP:INTDABLINK. -Niceguyedc ^Go Huskies! 01:12, 7 February 2016 (UTC)

OK, thanks for the history! If it is a policy, it should probably appear on pages like Wikipedia:List of policies. It sounds more like an adopted convention to me, though, which is there for technical reasons. Presumably if there was another way of flagging intentional disambig links (e.g., through link metadata), then this convention wouldn't be necessary. Thanks. List of Guantanamo Bay detainees

I see you are someone who has made good faith minor updates to List of Guantanamo Bay detainees.

It desperately needs a complete rewrite -- has needed one since the DoD was forced to publish a list of captives -- that was May 15th, 2006.

I didn't do it myself, then, or later, as I have very dogged challengers, who would have been very critical of me for making such huge changes, without working with other contributors, or at least getting others agreement first. I've made attempts to get others involved, or to at least endorse a rewrite, as you can see from the talk page archives.

The article needs such a radical rewrite that your contributions will be lost.

Collapsed lung (disambiguation) talk page is going in circles

It is not easy to sort out what actually happened. I remember the 2014 RM discussion which I closed, which seemed rather thorough at the time. Editors concluded that Pneumothorax was the primary meaning of Collapsed lung. If there have been new insights since 2014, it might be logical to open a new move discussion. It does appear that one of the regular medical editors changed the Collapsed lung redirect on June 1. That must have occasioned the series of moves by you on June 3. By any chance was there a request at WP:RMTR about this? EdJohnston (talk) 18:21, 3 June 2016 (UTC)

@EdJohnston: I had not looked at the move discussion result. I looked at the topics on the page, determined that it was reasonable that "collapsed lung" could refer to multiple items on that page, also looked at the number of incoming links (only 14) and swapped the disambiguation page and the redirect (per WP:MALPLACED). I obviously have no issue if consensus hasn't changed and Collapsed lung should be returned to a WP:PRIMARYREDIRECT to Pneumothorax.

Also, the redirect loop on the talk page was a mistake by me. The article redirect was corrected, but I did not correct the talk page redirect. I will make sure that I correct both page and talk page redirect when performing these moves in the future (and, when I have time this evening, I will go through the other similar moves of this type and check all of the (disambiguation) talk page redirects to make sure that they are redirect loops). -Niceguyedc ^Go Huskies! 18:30, 3 June 2016 (UTC)

Finding proper Wikilinks with or without the need for disambiguation

Hi, I'm a newbie. Thanks for disambiguating some of my recent edits.

Can you point me to information about how to avoid making more such work for you in the future? I currently put [[ ... ]] around anything that I suspect may provide a Wikilink and check to see whether they turn blue or red in the preview. If they're blue, I think I'm done. I now realize that I can mouseover each one to see whether the link looks like a disambiguation page, but is there any other tool that can help, either during the typing phase or that can apply in bulk at the preview stage? Intentionally linking to a redirect page to get to a disambiguation page sounds like the type of logic only a computer programmer would understand. It is not my intention to be disruptive. My goal is to minimize the amount of re-directs. For example, if a disambiguation page is labeled "This", it does not make sense to me to go to another Wikipedia page labeled "This (disambiguation)", just so Wikipedia can then redirect the user to finally get to the originally desired page labeled "This". The word "disambiguation" is used in the label as the visible link title, but just not in the hyperlink path. However, if you insist that you have bots that this would mess up, then I guess I should let a little bit of programming over rule common sense naming and linking. This is not a matter I am invested in much, so if you revert my edit, I won't make a fuss. I am glad you explained why you are doing what you are doing, even if the logic is programmer logic only. I know of that policy. I consider it one way that Wikipedia is broken. Was there a debate on creating that policy? In my mind, it is a bad policy. How can I debate it, or challenge it? Wikipedia does many things right, but imposing bad rules, or forcing super-editors opinions on every-day editors is one of the things Wikipedia does wrong. Wikipedia encourages multiple re-direct pages rather than encouraging editors to use correct terminology.

The other thing Wikipedia does wrong, the major sin in my eyes, is removing articles for lack of notability. Lack of references, or poorly created are good reasons, but lack of notability is a poor reason. My reason for editing most days is music albums and artists. What I want Wikipedia to have is a list of every album out there, with a list of album length, song titles, song lengths, writers, guest appearances, instruments used, and other information. I want this for every album I own, or every artist who I am interested in. However, due to lack of notability, there are many albums that do not have their own pages, and are only listed by album title on the artist page, with no other information, or minimal information. Then I have to go to AllMusic.com, or Amazon.com, or hunt down other sources. AllMusic sometimes does not list song composers, and sometimes (rarely) gets something wrong, but because it is not a wiki site, it cannot be corrected. Wikipedia should be that one stop shop for all information, but has decided not to be. Maybe it is a space issue on the servers, or maybe they cannot deleted poorly created articles without an objective criteria that also encompasses less than notable albums, but this lack of information due to deletion has taken a bit of the shine off of Wikipedia. It is not the one stop shop for all information, just another stop. Sorry for the rant, but if I was explaining one thing I dislike about Wikipedia, I thought I would mention my main grievance as well. Mburrell (talk) 00:09, 1 July 2016 (UTC)

As I have just pointed out on my talk page, that level of excessive (and unsourced) detail is not appropriate to Wikipedia articles, which is why it was removed. Disambiguation - Jitendra Singh

Hey, I'd just completed a move of Jitendra Singh (disambiguation) to Jitendra Singh. The latter was originally Jitendra Singh (Congress politician). I looked in to see and fix the links but then I saw that there're far too many and although the original title was for the congress politician, the incoming links are to all and sundry and not just that article.
