EverQuest

Greetings ;)

I found your user page at Special:Whatlinkshere/User:Scepia/EverQuest, and was wondering if you'd be willing to do some editing for another wiki. I started a family of wikis - called The KnowledgePit; it's intended to (eventually) be an encyclopedic reference for anything video game-related. MMORPGs get their own nodes (EQ KnowledgePit, WoW KnowledgePit, etc); at this time, the EQ node is the only one I've really done any work maturing. I've done a little work with the others, the node for console games more than the rest, but mostly it's the EQ one, which I've written a whole bunch of extension code for; the others are really just there as placeholders currently.

Anyway, this whole long thing is basically to ask if you'd be willing to do some editing on the EQ node, since you're a player ;) any time you'd be willing to contribute would be greatly appreciated. I threw together a little database hack so that if you sign up for one, the login info will work on all of the.m

Wild Bill Donovan

Hello.

I noticed that you switched the target of this redirect from William Joseph Donovan, the intelligence agent, to William Edward Donovan, the baseball player. They're both pretty famous and they're both nicknamed Wild Bill Donovan so the disambiguation around their names has been pretty bleary in the past. However, comparing these two Google searches ([1] and [2]) it seems to me that William Joseph is the more famous of the two, which is why I changed the redirect earlier today to point to his article. I then went to that page and wrote at the top

"Wild Bill Donovan" redirects here. For the baseball pitcher and manager see William Edward Donovan.

Anyway, this is a long-winded way of saying that I'm inclined to have the redirect point to William Joseph. It's pretty trivial so I doubt you particularly care. News from the diamond The 79^th MLB All-star Game is scheduled for this evening. The 2008 Home Run Derby took place yesterday. Justin Morneau defeated Josh Hamilton in the final round, 5 home runs to 3, although Hamilton broke a record with 28 home runs hit in the first round. From the Editors Baseball has a history unlike any other sport. It has been played in countless countries throughout the decades, and it will undoubtedly continue play for many more. On this eve, some the finest players the sport has to offer will take the field at the Yankee Stadium. Four popes spoke there, Pelé scored goals there, "The Greatest [football] Game Ever Played" was battled out there, John Philip Sousa lead a band there, George Costanza worked there; but what do all these events have in common? They fail to reach the level of greatness that the baseball that was played there did. In 1923, a man named Babe Ruth decided to build a new house, and over the years, that house was a home to some of the greatest baseball ever played. If I were to list out all of these great moments, it would be longer than the bill for the New Yankee Stadium. So I'll sum it up by saying that we can remember these great moments by adding them to this place we've gathered at for future generations to read about, to learn about, to dream about; but more importantly we can watch tonight and we can remember how baseball is unlike anything else that we will encounter in our lives. — Blackngold29

Re: Henry Porter

Hello. I've reverted your changes on this disambiguation page, but if you feel I'm wrong, please let me know. I'm unsure what grounds they've been changed on. 'Harry' has only become a separate name from Henry very recently and is usually the shortened form of 'Henry', therefore many people would try 'Henry Porter' when looking for 'Harry' as article titles are usually in someone's formal name. If it's something people may look for, I feel it should be there, even if it is not his full name (the article is very short and doesn't say if it is or isn't). As for the date of birth and further short description of 'Henry Porter (journalist)', I feel this is also necessary; it is useful on a disambiguation page to have the dates (especially to ensure the people are listed in the correct order) and the description of him as a fiction writer makes it clear to people who may think the person they are looking for is not listed as they do not know him as 'journalist'. A trick that some disambig pages use to seperate like names or variations is to include a small heading above each differential, in this case a description of why Harry = Henry I feel would be necessary. I know I have never related the name Henry with Harry, and I would suspect that many people would be understandably confused for the same reason. Bill Lange

Hi there, just gave a couple of suggestions at the peer review and had a little idea - how about creating a couple of Baseball stubs for Henry Harris (baseball), Ren Kelly and California State League? Even a short descriptive stub is better than nothing. In fact Encyclopaedia Brittanica contains mostly stubs: they're all useful! I'm watching the Bill Lange peer review and article for changes. Also - any idea about the IPA pronunciation? For example I'm not sure if it sounds like "Langer" or "Lanj" or neither! Cheers. Sillyfolkboy (talk) 22:52, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the useful suggestions, I am not sure if there is too much information available for the State League since its lifespan was very short, and I could look into Harris and Ren. Brown Stockings or Ruby Legs?

Heya Neonblak!

I need an education.

I saw your recent edit over at List of Major League Baseball triples records. I understand that the article that was being linked to calls the team Worcester Ruby Legs. I also noted and checked a few references that call them as such. Major League Baseball calls them the Brown Stockings (search for "Stovey"). Is there one name more "authoritative" over the other? I know that back in the day, team names were far more a big deal than they are today, and they could change more or less at the drop of a hat. It would seem to me that MLB would be the "proper" source, unless there is clearly something that the baseball historians know that MLB won't admit to or is purposely stearing away from.

Thanks for asking, what I did was make the Worcester team uniform, there was an individual over a year ago re-direct the Ruby Legs to Worcester Worcesters, without much of an explanation. So, I changed it back and made all the links back to the Ruby Legs. Most of them were anyway, but quite a few were to the Worcesters, and only a couple were directed from Brown Stockings. The two most often cited sources for baseball stats, etc, on Wikipedia are Baseball-Reference and retrosheet. Here is each of them: Retrosheet and Baseball-reference. Also, the category for their players is named Worcester Ruby Legs players. I don't doubt MLB.com as a reliable reference, it is just my judgement that the preponderence of the evidence suggests Ruby Legs as the uniform name. Don't hesitate to ask me anything else or expand on this, we could take to WikiProject Baseball and see what the community thinks.Neonblak (talk) 16:24, 7 September 2008 (UTC)

I appreciate the education. I am personally not interested in it being one vs the other, and having it as the Ruby Legs is fine by me. Having seen more than a few nineteenth century teams go be several names, I was just wondering if there was some source out there that gave some bite to one name over the other.

NABBP

Hi, At Cincinnati Red Stockings, I put Darryl Brock in a footnote and soon found myself ensnared. Probably I massaged the article for more than an hour. Maybe Brock should be in a popular culture section as some cities have for their appearances in Hollywood movies.

More important, I spent 2/3 of a long weekend looking over the NABBP articles. I couldn't resist revising content of some articles and prefaces of some categories but the main efforts were

• categorizing player pages in players/members by team
• reporting on coverage of players and clubs.

To see the reporting please visit Category talk:National Association of Base Ball Players teams for clubs and Category talk:National Association of Base Ball Players members by team as the point of entry for players. The latter is more important. Subcategory Category talk pages for particular teams hold the reports that function something like all-time rosters (now mainly covering 1869-1870 for major teams).

Probably I put 50 players into teams subcategories 100 times in all. Probably I will extend that back before 1869 for players with pages, without extending the team rosters.

Feel free to revert category prefaces, of course. Maybe I should have resisted temptation and preserved more of the two days simply to cat as many players as possible.

There seems to be little work on baseball before 1871(?) during the last two years. Now I am here rather than at your WikiProject (a) because your name is on many of the articles and categories, (b) because you seem to be watching the Cincinnati Red Stockings. --P64 (talk) 21:34, 17 February 2009 (UTC)

I am relieved that there is another person who is interested in improving these early baseball articles, I welcome any effort you put forth. I threw in the Brock novel due to the orphan tag that was placed on it, and since I had read it, I connected it to the Red Stockings in some fashion, not worrying so much about refs. I watch almost exclusively pre-1900 baseball articles, so I try to stay up on all the changes.

There are some pre-1869 players in the NABBP cats, but finding full rosters is not so easy... I have books with full team photos, but either there is no listing of the names, or they are so small and pixelated to read.Neonblak ^talk - 00:07, 18 February 2009 (UTC)

Which books with team photos?

Are you using for one reference Marshall Wright, NABBP 1857-1870 (no photos)?

A club doesn't merit a players category until there are a few player pages to categorize there, imo. Do you know of any early baseball player who is not in any baseball player category? Or who is in one of the NAPBBP categories for convenience although he didn't play in the second NA? --P64 (talk) 02:38, 23 February 2009 (UTC)

Me and and another user only just started creating these a month ago or so, so I am sure there are plenty of players not rightfully connected to there NABBP teams.

One book (because it just happens to be on my computer desk) that has nice old team photos, with many that don't list the players is "Baseball: More Than 150 Years" by David Nemec and Saul Wisnia, Publications International, Ltd. For example, a team photo of the New York Actives (bet. 1856 and 1863), 1864 Brooklyn Base Ball Club, 1865 Brooklyn Atlantics, the 1864 New York Mutuals (readable but with last names only)... the 19th century is only covered for one chapter, then the 1900's, 1910's, and so... good book though. As far as I can remember, I haven't used the Wright book, but I would if I had it.

I agree with you about team categories only being created if there are multiple players that can be filed in there, and the NABBP had a long list of teams under that umbrella.Neonblak ^talk - 06:22, 23 February 2009 (UTC)

Visit User:P64/roster where I have presented some roster data for the Unions of Morrisania and the Forest Citys of Rockford. Wright provides some player data for the Unions 1857 to 1870 and for the FC 1868 to 1870. My presentations all fall short of his rosters by limiting the players who are listed and for the Unions my tables begin only in 1863 and 1862. Some of the data on fielding positions and regular status is from other sources; a few player-team listings may be from other sources. Ellard on Charlie Gould

These notes from Baseball in Cincinnati rely on the index to the McFarland reprint. These represent about half of the index entries; the others seem insignificant today. Every note begins with the page number(s). Generally this is my account of what Ellard says with quotation marks for his words and parentheses for my asides.

18-19. The Cincinnati Buckeye Townball Club, apparently Cin's first ballclub, reorganized fall 1866 as the Buckeye Baseball Club. Charley Gould played firstbase on the nine that fall and in 1867.

36-37. At the Great Baseball Tournament of September 1867 (local), he won the prizes for "farthest throw" 302'3 and "best second base"(!).

60. The Cincinnati Base Ball Club Song (evidently 1868) celebrated his reliability. "In many a game that we have played, We've needed a First Base, But now our opponents will find The 'basket' in its place. And if you think he 'muffs' the balls, Sent into him red hot, You'll soon be fooled by 'Charlie Gould', and find he 'muffs' them not."

94-95. For 1869 Gould (a member since 1868) was the only "Cincinnatian" on the Red Stockings team. For eight months, Mar 15 to Nov 15, he was paid $800 the base rate earned by five of the first nine.

99. "He was one of the best humored men on the field, always working with a will, and always to be found at his post." --every game in 1868, all but one 1869 ... "was familiarly known as 'the bushel-basket'" ... "the largest man on the team" Against the Mutuals in New York he put out 12 at firstbase without error, with "one or two surprising catches". He was praised in the New York press.

139. After more than a year the Red Stockings were defeated 8-7 on a 3-run rally by the Atlantics in the bottom of the 11th. With a tie score and one on base, "Zettlein went to bat, and, hitting a hot liner to Gould, he made his first base, as Gould found the ball too hot and too far out of reach to capture it, but he stopped its force and sent it toward Sweasy. He, however, did not pick it up cleanly, and, in fact, by a bad muff, he not only let Ferguson to get his third, but allowed him to steal home, thereby giving victory to the Atlantics."

178. 1896 Apr 13, many cities observed Harry Wright Day to raise money for the Harry Wright Memorial Fund. In Cincinnati the 1896 Reds defeated the 1882 Reds, 7-3. Gould played rf and 1b for the 1882 Reds (altho he last played in 1877)

A new Cin club joined the National League for its inaugural 1876 season with Charlie Gould as captain/manager but Ellard doesn't cover that or any season after 1870 in any depth.

I know it is not always possible to reference all facts, but if the article were trying for promotion, all facts would have to be, and all not referenced would have to be deleted. I just noticed that you had used two books for reference in the article, and was curious as to what material belonged to which reference. Every ballplayer page is full of facts that without references, sometimes hundred of quantitative facts, plus at least a team and fielding position for every season. That status may be inappropriate for ballplayer articles but I don't have enough experience to know what they are really seeking in biographical articles. For example, how many references for birthdate, birthplace, cause of death, deathdate, deathplace, burial place?

Do you know the biographical collections by SABR, Nineteenth Century Stars (1989) and Baseball's First Stars (1996)? They cover about 150 baseball people each, generally a little more prominent than Gould and Sweasy, such as Leonard. Commonly the shorter ones are about five times longer than I wrote here for Gould. I have a list somewhere. When it finds me I will post it so you can see the coverage, although you should simply buy either one if you find it on the web for $10. --P64 (talk) 21:34, 9 March 2009 (UTC)

careers of NABBP players

My User page now begins with a big wikitable, providing some background data for 20-odd clubs and navigating the information on NABBP teams and player careers that I have recently provided behind the scenes.

• rosters that feature important teams (commonly the 1869 and 1870 professional teams of the club)
• "members by team" Categories of wikipedia player pages
• reports on major leaguers (who has a page, who played for the team when)

The latter are versions of reports I provided first at Category talk pages; probably I will maintain these versions in my User space.

Team roster data is unwieldy, relative to its importance. For now I am not willing to work at making tabular rosters part of the encyclopedia; there would need to be some agreement that a particular format works well, and I doubt that that is true. Most of the rosters I have presented for "featured teams" are unwieldy or close to the maximum wield although they feature only one or two seasons and they list five-game players only. --P64 (talk) 21:36, 9 March 2009 (UTC)

East End Park (Cincinnati) vs. Pendleton Park

The researcher there has me pretty well convinced that the focus of the information should be at East End Park rather than at Pendleton Park, with Pendleton Park (and several others) merely redirecting. One thing I find quite interesting is that there is still a diamond on the location, albeit a softball diamond. Some of the surrounding houses are still there too. I think the one article should cover the whole history (such as it is) of that site. Any objections to focusing the article on East End Park (Cincinnati)? P.S. I added a needed disambiguation to East End Park, an existing venue in the U.K., I think. That precedent is fine. It's kind of like the now-defunct Tiger Stadium (Detroit) vs. the still-in-use Tiger Stadium, the home of LSU football. P.P.S. I have a hunch the real problem with "Reds" was not the other team in Cincinnati, but the other team in the American Association, namely the pennant-winning Boston Reds, who of course also stole their nickname from a cross-town rival. I discussed this issue with the main contributor to the East End Park article. He seems to have access to a great many newspaper articles from the era, and has done quite a bit of research, convincing me that Pendleton Park should redirect there, but I left it up to him to do what was necessary, as well as possible changes to Kelly's Killers (Reds) and King Kelly (Mike Kelly).Neonblak ^talk - 12:38, 20 May 2009 (UTC)

King Kelly

I'd love to take old Kelly on as a project. I was hoping some of the many stories about him were in Rob Neyer's Big Book of Baseball Legends which I own, but sadly not. Regardless I've got his contemporary biography Slide, Kelly, Slide by Appel and his appearances in the New Bill James Historical Abstract for some starting source material. Any help you can provide would be excellent. As for his name, I really do think King fits better. As mentioned on his talk page, that is the name he is listed as on Baseball-Reference, Fangraphs, etc, etc. Cy Young, Babe Ruth, Whitey Ford, Catfish Hunter, plenty of players grow to be known by nicknames more than their real name. I have seen multiple ways of doing this, so I have gone with what I believe to be the easiest for the reader to understand. To me, it seems easier that the book reference be above the "notes". WP:LAYOUT is pretty vague on this, it likes either references or notes, and the way I use references, was the preferred method by a GA reviewer, and it stuck with me; see Bill Lange. Just Out, COTW does well in new decade

Howdy WikiProject Oregon folks, time again for the latest installment of As the Collaboration Of The Week Turns. Last week was one of the more successful COTWs in recent memory as we really worked hard as a community to improve Concordia University and Berry Botanic Garden. Both are now at least C class articles and nicely illustrated (thanks to Tedder, Finetooth, and Ipoellet). Plus it really was a group effort as we had five different WPORE editors work on the garden and ditto with the school, with some overlap between the two.

No problem, the reason I reviewed this so quickly was that I thought this was an interesting cricketer, although I know very little about the sport (I'm in the US, where they don't show the sport on TV). I left a comment on the GA nom page about an issue raised by another user, in respect to Ganguly's coaching legacy, I think that an explanation of the good and bad would be great for comprehensiveness, and would not fall into in a cruft stage. Although I think that the one sentence covering his two years in county were awfully short, I wouldn't hold back the GA on that alone.Neonblak ^talk - 07:12, 7 February 2010 (UTC)

Hugh Daily

Jim Devlin

I wanted to ask you about this pair of edits. According to the change you made, the Devlin in the image would be just seven years of age (the picture was taken in 1873 and Jim Devlin (pitcher) was born in 1866). Plain old Jim Devlin would be 24 in 1873, old enough to be playing in MLB. — KV5 • Talk • 19:57, 12 October 2010 (UTC)
