User talk:Mike Searson/archive17WaltherI would love some help with it! I decided not to split them up into historic and modern tho. I found it better to do target & defensive. But if you are knowledgeable about Walthers, I am working on revamping all the Walther articles. I also am getting a few guys from IMFDB to come help out. --Zackmann08 (talk) 00:06, 13 December 2012 (UTC) Barrett BORSI am considering making a page for the Barrett BORS as part of my work on {{Barrett}} firearms. Any thoughts? It isn't exactly a weapon but seeing as it is used with most of Barrett's sniper rifles I think it deserves a page. Also, do you know any other people who are currently active in the Firearms Project who I can bounce ideas off of? --Zackmann08 (talk) 18:21, 16 December 2012 (UTC)

Featured content and GA report Christian art Spotlight In the spirit of Christmas, the spotlight for the coming month might actually best be on those people closest to you. We know that a lot of our editors here are associated in some way or another with schools, and many if not most of them are going on rather extended breaks for the holidays. This can give some of us a chance to meet up with old friends, spend time with our families and those close to us, and, in a sense, "recharge" for the new year. So, for all of you who are in some way part of that group, we wish you the very best of holidays. We hope you all return to editing after the holidays with your spirits lifted and with your energies at peak level. There are some small matters in development here as well, and it is our hope that some of them will be ready come the next newsletter. But, until then, we wish you all the happiest and holiest (if appropriate) holidays. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. Wikipedia Ambassadors updateHi! You're getting this message because you are or have been a Wikipedia Ambassador. A new term is beginning for the United States and Canada Education Programs, and I wanted to give you an update on some important new information if you're interested in continuing your work this term as a Wikipedia Ambassador. You may have heard a reference to a transition the education program is going through. This is the last term that the Wikimedia Foundation will directly run the U.S. and Canada programs; beginning in June, a proposed thematic organization is likely to take over organizing the program. You can read more about the proposal here. Another major change in the program will take effect immediately. Beginning this term, a new MediaWiki education extension will replace all course pages and Ambassador lists. (See Wikipedia:Course pages and Help:Education Program extension for more details.) Included in the extension are online volunteer and campus volunteer user rights, which let you create and edit course pages and sign up as an ambassador for a particular course. If you would like to continue serving as a Wikipedia Ambassador — even if you do not support a class this term — you must create an ambassador profile. If you're no longer interested in being a Wikipedia Ambassador, you don't need to do anything.
First, you need the relevant user rights for Online and/or Campus Ambassadors. (If you are an admin, you can grant the rights yourself, for you as well as other ambassadors.) Just post your rights request here, and we'll get you set up as quickly as possible. Once you've got the ambassador rights, please set up at a Campus and/or Online Ambassador profile. You can do so at: Going forward, the lists of Ambassadors at Special:CampusAmbassadors and Special:OnlineAmbassadors will be the official roster of who is an active Ambassador. If you would like to be an Ambassador but not ready to serve this term, you can un-check the option in your profile to publicly list it (which will remove your profile from the list). After that, you can sign on to support courses. The list of courses will be at Special:Courses. (By default, this lists "Current" courses, but you can change the Status filter to "Planned" to see courses for this term that haven't reached their listed start date yet.) As this is the first term we have used the extension, we know there will be some bugs, and we know the feature set is not as rich as it could be. (A big wave of improvements is already in the pipeline. And if you know MediaWiki and could help with code review, we'd love to have your help!) Please reach out to me (Sage Ross) with any complaints, bug reports, and feature suggestions. The basic features of the extension are documented at Wikipedia:Course pages, and you can see a tutorial for setting up and using them here.
In the past, the Education Program has had a pretty fragmented set of communication channels. We're trying to fix that. These are the recommended places to discuss and stay up-to-date on the education program:
We now have an online training for Ambassadors, which is intended to be both an orientation about the Wikipedia Ambassador role for newcomers and the manual for how to do the role. (There are parallel trainings for students and for educators as well.) Please go through the training if you feel like you need a refresher on how a typical class is supposed to go and where the Ambassadors fit in, or if you want to review and help improve it. If there's something you'd like to see added, or other suggestions you have for it, feel free to edit the training and/or leave feedback. A primer on setting up and using course pages is included in the educators' training. The Resources page of the training is the main place for Ambassador-related resources. If there's something you think is important as a resource that's not on there, please add it. Finally, whether or not you work with any classes this term, I encourage you to post entries to the Trophy Case whenever you see excellent work from students or if you have great examples from past semesters. And, as always, let students (and other editors!) know when they do things well; a little WikiLove goes a long way! --Sage Ross (WMF) (talk) 20:51, 14 January 2013 (UTC) The Signpost: 14 January 2013

Thank you, Dcoetzee! Spotlight The Spotlight this month turns to the the Syriac Christianity work group. The scope of this project includes the various traditions of Syriac Christianity, including the Assyrian Church of the East, Ancient Church of the East, Church of the East, Syriac Orthodox Church, Chaldean Catholic Church, Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, Melkite Greek Catholic Church, Syriac Catholic Church, Syro-Malankara Catholic Church, and Saint Thomas Christians. One of these groups, the Assyrian Church of the East, is considered by scholars to have probably been, for several hundred years, the largest Christian grouping in the planet, with its numerous members in Central Asia and Eastern Asia. Numerous texts, traditions, and practices unique to these groups exist, including the Jesus Sutras and the belief of the Assyrian Church of the East that the bread they use in the preparation of their Eucharist uses the same basic yeast as that used in the bread of the Last Supper itself. Sadly, given the linguistic barriers to much of the content relative to these groups, and the comparative lack of notoriety they have in the Western world, much of this content does receive less attenion, and thus less development, than much other content. There is a large amount of extremely valuable historical material here still waiting to be adequately developed by editors with an interest in the topic, and I personally very much hope that we can draw more attention to these topics, and the content related to them. Problem with viewing certain user page sectionsBecause of a nice 2007 thanks on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Ferrierd, viewed your great user page today. FYI, unfortunately my IE browser initially didn't display the Albums, Movies, or Vandalism sections/subsections as separate groups of items. Reducing the browser zoom level to 50% made IE display the sections better, but the text was too small to read. As a workaround, a mock Edit of each section followed by a Preview (and cancel) made it possible to use IE to view the items in each section, but thought mock edits were probably not a good method. Donald Kaul Article for DeletionMike, since I removed the whole Donald Kaul anti second amendment stuff from his bio for comprising too much of his bio, the article seems too now be too light to keep. Donald Kaul is a minor figure out there, not every newspaper writer gets an entry. I don't think he merits inclusion in the encyclopedia. THoughts? Should we move forward with deletion of this guy? It seems the only notable thing he did in 30 years was to write a rant against the second amendment.-Justanonymous (talk) 19:46, 3 March 2013 (UTC)
Some simple help maybe needed on the new papabili listIf you have the time and the possibility the new List of papabili in the 2013 papal conclave WP article could need some help. You could start by taking a look at the talk page. Thanks Pgarret (talk) 09:10, 5 March 2013 (UTC)) Gun Control helpMike, You might be interested in this. We have a sick article over at Gun control. It's very long at 72,000+ bytes and growing .... some editors have long edits in draft on their talk pages Giajin42 does at least. The article is patently very biased at the moment and filled with at lot of POV pushing language - mostly pro-gun control stuff. It falls under Wikiproject Firearms so I thought I'd leave you a note. An administrator came stopped the warring (Stopyourbull went to 3RR) and basically got everybody to come to the talk page to discuss where to take it. Kafziel, the admin, opened up a Dispute resolution section asking for the various parties to propose their vision for the project. See what we have there. We'll probably open it up for Rfc but before we do, maybe you have a good firearms guy that you're comfortable with that knows what he's talking about that might go over there and propose a good option for where this article needs to go. I'll watch your page so we can keep the conversation together. -Justanonymous (talk) 22:12, 5 March 2013 (UTC)

Membership report
We apologise for the hiatus in the publication of this newsletter due to unforseen circumstances leading to the wikibreak of John Carter, and so I have taken over as acting editor, and have taken this opportunity to move the publication date to the start of each month as planned, to better reflect on the previous month and look ahead to the next. This issue covers the period of time from mid-January to the end of March. Since the last issue we have seen the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI and the election of Pope Francis. This has received much coverage both in the world media and on Wikipedia. While there is still much work to do, several quality articles have been written and the editors involved are thanked for their efforts.

Our profoundest thanks and congratulations to all those involved! Christian art Spotlight The Spotlight this month turns to the the Jesus work group. The scope of this project includes the life and teachings of the central figure of Christianity, Jesus Christ and aims to write about them in a non-denominational encylopædic style. Top-priority articles include Jesus, Christ, Resurrection of Jesus, and Holy Grail, whereas High-priority articles include Aramaic Language, a former FA, as well as Sermon on the Mount, Lamb of God, and Passion (Christianity). The workgroup has also published two books, covering Christ's final days and the Parables of Jesus. The workgroup has two GAs, Nativity scene, and Jesus in Islam, but unfortunately the flagship article, Jesus was delisted in 2009. It is also responsible for three WP:1.0 articles, and the WikiWork of the project is 4.56, which indicates the "average" article is between Start and C class.

Gun-Firearm-Gunpowder-et.al. article cleanupHi Mike, User:Fountains of Bryn Mawr and I have taken notice of just how messed up (overly redundant, inconsistent, sloppily written [in some cases], un(der)-referenced, and/or just factually wrong) these articles are or have become. Some of this seems to be the result of the onslaught of vandalism and POV pushing on a significant number of firearm related articles since the Sandy Hook incident last December. Defending the NRA and Wayne LaPierre articles was almost a full-time pursuit December through February. I'm rather amazed at the number of blocks and bans I've seen doled out by various admins as a result of the impassioned discourse that's transpired on gun related article Talk pages. My first thought is to create a sub-page off the Firearms Project page in order to help make a list of articles to address and then categorize their needs from there. But then I realized that this is the purpose of the project page, so I'm checking in and asking for your guidance before Bryn and I and several other fairly active gun informed (but neutral) editors start up any kind of significant effort. As the project coordinator, what are your thoughts? Best regards, Chris, --Scalhotrod - Just your average banjo playing, drag racing, cowboy... (talk) 13:48, 6 April 2013 (UTC)
