Hello, my name is Alyssa and I am in a club at my school called TSA. In TSA, I am in an event called Medical Technology Issues. The whole point of Medical Technology Issues is to research a topic that has been affecting the medical society recently. Perhaps you could use this tool to keep track of non-redirect pages you've made? For example, I came up with this list of pages. Unfortunately, it doesn't specify creation date, but thought maybe you'd still be interested.

Hello Mikael, I believe I might have suggested in the past that you make every effort to support your edits with secondary sources, as clearly outlined in WP:MEDRS. You have now made additions to three articles (thrombosis, thrombophilia and postpartum period) based on the same primary source. I know it's from NEJM, but it remains a primary source and there may be substantial geographical variation that makes the data non-generalisable. doi:10.1056/NEJMoa1311485 was conducted in California - we know how for instance obesity (a significant risk factor for thrombosis) is more common in the USA than in many other countries. The issue of postpartum thrombosis is discussed in good quality secondary sources, so I trust it shouldn't be difficult to identify these and return the content in question (but perhaps without the non-generalisable numerical claims). Thanks for your contributions to Wikipedia. Public education is a much under recognized endeavor. My name is Gary. I am an MD/PhD candidate at Washington University in St Louis. I think I see a minor error in the adrenergic receptor flow chart for the alpha-2 adrenoreceptor. There is a mismatch in the logic in the parallel construction of the two down stream effectors. Either both should reflect the blocked signaling, "//" in the diagram, and read something like "Inhibition of Neurotransmitter Release" and "Smooth Muscle Relaxation", or both should represent the type of output "Neurotransmitter Release" and "Smooth Muscle Contraction" and allow the reader to interpret the effect of blocking, "//", the pathway. Currently it appears to be using both, and I believe that to be a typo.
Promotion of your own Wikiversity articles as sources on Wikipedia
I note that yet again you are promoting Wikiversity material written by yourself as a source for Wikipedia - without making this clear in the discussions. Given that in my opinion this constitutes a conflict of interest, I should warn you that if I see a repeat of this, I shall raise the matter either at WP:COIN or possibly at WP:ANI. I believe the transparency of wikis make it possible to contribute in this way despite the conflict of interest of being the researcher and author behind original research cited in Wikipedia entries. I noticed that there are journals indexed in pubmed that allow submissions. That's worth a thought. It looks like a better and easier way to go, to use a foundational existing system with its implements than to build from scratch. What do you think? Your message really brightened my day. Also, I truly hope you get to study Medicine. I first chose this path to directly help people in need, and later also realized that it is quite a geographically independent subject; politics and business, for example, vary a lot worldwide, but human bodies are basically the same. It is relatively easy to go anywhere in the world and find a job as a doctor, and any research you do can be of benefit to the entire human population (this also applies to Wikipedia contributions).

These headings let us have a standard way of presenting the information in anatomical articles, indicate what information may have been forgotten, and save angst when trying to decide how to organise an article. That said, this might not suit every article. If in doubt, be bold!
Why not try and strive to create a good article! Physiology related articles are often small in scope, have available sources, and only a limited amount of research available that is readily presentable!

It's the most useful template in entire Wikipedia in my opinion Anyhow, I'm currently using my own gallery as a pilot project to assign one doi code for multiple images. I'll let you know if it works out, because I think it can be used for several other medical images in your gallery as well. Style guides for translations
Translations are of both full articles and shorter articles continues. The process where short articles are chosen for translation hasn't been fully transparent. In the coming months we hope to have a first guide, so that anyone who writes medical or health articles knows how to get their articles to a standard where they can be translated! That's why we're currently working on medical good lede criteria! The idea is to have a similar peer review process to good article nominations, but only for ledes.
Some more stats
In July, 18 full article translations went live (WP:RTT), and an additional 6 simplified versions went live (WP:RTTS)!
We have a number of new lead integrators into Dutch, Polish, Arabic and Bulgarian, with more to come in smaller languages! (Find them here old sign up page)

I see that I have stumbled into making the opposite judgement to the one you made, about fingernail illustrations... The one that shows an extensive flat area of nail matrix, in the nail bed plane, (rather than just pointing at the root) seems more consistent with everything I am reading about the matrix. Can we find some truly authoritative anatomy illustrations to clarify this issue? I have marked the two large tables appearing in Pathogenic bacteria article, as being against fair copyright use. Please do not simply revert, but investigate this claim. Please see the fair use article, and consult with an Administrator, to ask if this shear volume of material from a single source can indeed be legally transferred into WIkipedia without violating fair use. It is not simply a matter of the material being reformatted, or moved around a bit. We cannot simply take 21 pages of already summarized / tabulated content of a copyrighted source textbook, and transfer it in to the encyclopedia to make it more readily available. Copyright issues on the Pathogenic bacteria article
Thank you for all the hard work that you have put into the Pathogenic bacteria article. Unfortunately, much of it is a copyright infringement because is directly quoted from a google book. Not to worry! I am re-wording and re-formatting in my best attempts to resolve this and almost all the content you have worked so hard to put into the article will probably remain intact. I will only need to reword the content. I will certainly retain the references that you have added and I have added even more myself. I am not critical of anything that you have done with this article, I am only trying to get rid of the copyright problems. Feel free to go to the article after I am done with my heavy editing and reword things better to your liking. I only suggest that you not copy and past tables or contents from a book directly into an article to create the appearance of violating copyrights. Best Regards,

I am so relieved that you approve of what I've been doing. I have had the unfortunate experience of trying to help on a featured article and found that I had inadvertently deeply insulted the major contributor, to my dismay. It was taken as criticism instead of collaborative editing...oh well. I also hope that the editing in small increments allows you the opportunity to easily revert my edits if you have found that I have substantially changed the meaning (unintentional, I assure you). I don't understand the comments and templates about there not being enough sources; the bibliography seems quite robust. It seems that we work in similar areas. We can expand the adverse effects of vaping image by using two more refs. I recommend a drawing of a pregnant women with fetus in the womb and with the pregnant women holding the hand of a child. There are obviously side effects on a women's brain, the fetus, and children. I suggest creating a new image to replace the current nicotine table at Electronic cigarette#Safety. My currently hospital unfortunately doesn't provide access to the statement of the Forum of International Respiratory Societies. What I want to know is: Do the potential effects therein really refer to nicotine by any route of administration (and not only from the relatively little evidence from nicotine by e-cigarettes)? The information I cited below is specifically about nicotine. The sources should be about the health effects about nicotine rather than for a particular product. If the sources for nicotine patches have detailed information about nicotine they can be used. If they are about nicotine patches in general that could be a SYN violation to claim it is about specifically nicotine. I haven't seen the sources so I do no know if they can be used for specific claims about nicotine. Since there is additional evidence from other sources they can be included to create a single image with all the current evidence from all the different sources. Health Effects of Nicotine
"The harm-reduction premise ignores the deleterious effects of nicotine (29). Nicotine is highly addictive (30) and affects many body cells, mediators, and metabolic pathways (31). It has long been known to adversely affect children, not only in utero but also during postnatal development through adolescence. It may even cause adult disease. There is evidence that in utero exposure influences the later occurrence of conditions such as impaired fertility, type 2 diabetes, obesity, hypertension, neurobehavioral defects, and respiratory dysfunction (32). Nicotine has significant cardiovascular effects (33, 34) and may play a major role in the development of coronary artery disease (35), atherosclerosis (36), and aortic aneurysms (37). Nicotine affects neuroregulation and structural changes in the brain and lung that could disturb a wide variety of reflexes and responses; these changes could increase vulnerability to hypoxia (38).
Nicotine has been associated with the development of peptic ulcer and gastrointestinal cancer (39), may promote tumor angiogenesis (40), and may alter neurologic development (41). Nicotine addiction may cause deleterious effects in women’s brains by inhibiting estrogen signaling, which in turn may make the brain more susceptible to ischemia (42). There are many reports of the deleterious effect of nicotine on bones in both animal models and humans (43) and of the adverse effect of nicotine on chromosomes (“genotoxic effect”) of fetal cells (44)."[16]QuackGuru (talk) 16:44, 4 August 2015 (UTC)
QuackGuru, I've updated the Side effects of nicotine image now. However, "Neuroregulation and structural changes in the brain and lung" and "Chromosomes (genotoxic effect) of fetal cells" were too vague and not practically significant for inclusion. I found no proper location for "Tumor angiogenesis", and "neurologic growth" does not seem directly like an adverse effect. On the other hand, I could possibly include "Reports of slight harmful effects on bones in both animal models and humans" if it there was a specification such as causing osteoporosis or increased fracture risk. I think it's a good idea to try out a different approach regarding usernames. If it works well, it might be something that WJM can learn from too. For domain name, godaddy.com has worked fine for me. All you need is basically the domain name (perhaps firstjournalofscience.org or some form of abbreviation of it), and then you set it to redirect to https://en.wikiversity.org/wiki/First_Journal_of_Science. I noticed you were the last person to update the [17]. I don't have experience in manipulating these images, but would you be able to add in the following items to (this incredibly neat!) diagram:
Add the [Megakaryocyte%E2%80%93erythroid_progenitor_cell] (which will come after the CMP but before the megakaryoblast and proerythroblast - however, it is not connected to the myeloblast).Also see [18]
Add Platelets (in brackets) next to thromobycytes, as they are a fairly common AKA for thromobocytes, in fact the article on Wikipedia is on platelets.
If you are unable to do this, would you be able to suggest me to someone who can? I feel like the addition of this would be useful to this diagram. Re-presenting tabular data that appears in a publication, or reproducing a graphic/chart that already appears in a other source, these are not WP:OR. Creating new visual representations of published data likely rises to the level of violating WP:OR—because interpretation is most often required in the production of such new unrefereed, unpublished, visual representations, and because (unlike tabular data), graphical representation of data is almost impossible to verify to a source, even were you to take the care to label every data point with its raw data as it appears in the source. I don't see how graphical representation of data would be hard to verify - you look at the corresponding value at the axes, and see if it corresponds to the numbers in the source. I think it is acceptable to create a diagram of income and fertility for an article on exactly that topic, if there is no appropriate image from an external source with a compatible license. After all, every image created from data comes with some degree of WP:ORIGINALSYN, but if we just copied diagrams from external sources we would instead have WP:Copyright violations. Regarding your image collection: Ultrasonography and related images are data
Regarding which, are Wikiproject Medicine and other users aware that you are generating original content?
Content taken from published sources to create Wikipedia images, that is adapted by relabeling, redrawing, etc., is acceptable if you cite the source when the image is used. In citing the source, such as in the cases of your relabeling the images from the 1918 Gray's, a positive contribution is made to the encyclopedia—improved all the more if in relabeling you take a more modern text, and make sure the nomenclature used 100-years ago is fully, completely the same as in use now (and then, you provide that modern corroborating source).
On the other hand, data-rich content that you generate yourself (for as any anatomist, spectroscopist, cell biologist, or radiologist will tell you, images are data)—or that is generated in your or a colleague's laboratory (rather than being adapted from a published, peer-reviewed source)—and thereafter is interpreted and selected for presentation by you: these images, whether from the imaging laboratory, like the problematic ultrasounds, or otherwise, these images are, in my opinion, entirely unacceptable at Wikipedia, as their distribution amounts to prohibited WP:Original research. Given that such WP:OR is seemingly widespread in certain types of your images, and that errors have been found in that part of your work, post hoc (see below), one has to question any image in your collection that is not sourced to a reliable, scholarly source, per WP:VERIFY. [All the more, for the visual data images, considering American standards and expectations regarding the documentation required to assure permissions and medical privacy standards are met (e.g., of the individuals whose sonograms appear).]
The current limited peer review process in use here (that you have applied), and its results in the case of your ultrasound images, casts a further shadow over your collection:
2-3 independent reviewers are typically involved in refereed publication of visual data by journals, and that occurs after preliminary screening by masthead editorial teams at the publication (e.g., most manuscripts submitted to NPG journals are never sent out for review, as they are judged as not being within scope or up to journal standards).
To the contrary, your set of images:
received no pre-review by scholarly individuals in this organization, for baseline acceptability;
was reviewed at one point in time (that is now past, meaning that unreviewed images may again be a part of the gallery);
was not independently reviewed, insofar as the individual reviewing is apparently a colleague at your institution;
was reviewed by a single individual whose scholarly credentials are not in evidence;
Even so, at least 2 interpretive/scientific mistakes were discovered after gallery creation and image dissemination ([21]). Viz., in the two image cases that were withdrawn, the images nevertheless were uploaded and available for dissemination until their errors were discovered. The point of WP:OR and WP:VERIFY is to minimise the distribution of inaccurate material, that would be widespread were these policies were not in force.
Given these observations, in my view, one has to question any image in your collection that is not sourced to a reliable, scholarly source, per WP:VERIFY. As stated above, such self-published data images interpreted only by WP editors are, in my opinion, entirely unacceptable at Wikipedia, as their distribution amounts to prohibited WP:Original research.
I suggest here for discussion, the following two proposals:
You commit to state the scholarly, published source of any image you derive and adapt from another publication, asking as well that if the source is out-of-date, and you check content during your adaptation, that you also state the scholarly source against which your adaptation is checked; and
You commit to removing any image of yours that violates WP:OR, that is, any image that is your original data and research, whether by data gathering, or by its interpretation.
The fact of the matter is that the rules you are skirting are very commonly ignored at wikipedia, with the result being that there are many cases at WP that violate basic, widely accepted principles of doing honest scholarly work. But you raise this to a new level, by elevating your Medical gallery of Mikael Häggström 2014 to be a collection to a component of a purported peer-reviewed journal of medicine (WJoM). You are therefore setting a precedent, and newly proposed precedents should be closely scrutinised.
I suggest on close scrutiny, that your work violates WP:OR, in part, and when misused, further violates WP:VERIFY. Wikipedia is called on to use content (data and interpretations) from published, peer-reviewed sources of the highest quality. Your gallery does not rise to this level, not even with your colleagues review. We are to be generating images drawn from scholars, from scholarly sources, and not publishing our own data and research (and its interpretation) here.
Even were you to publish your images, they would not be entirely acceptable here, as you would be called to pick the best available images to make an encyclopedic point, and (speaking as a published and publishing scholar), our personally created journal images are most often not best for these encyclopedia articles.
I agree with you that Wikiversity is not a WP:MEDRS. However, I disagree that pictures by medical imaging (including ultrasonographies, X-rays and MRI images) that are not from WP:MEDRS would be unacceptable in Wikipedia. Text and diagrams can be created with own words and designs, using MEDRS as references, but X-rays etc must be copies from the original sources. Very few pictures by medical imaging on external pages have compatible licenses. Journals often charge between $1,500 and $3,000 for making restricted works open access (PLOS examples), so the cost of permissions to make works even copyleft to be compatible with Wikipedia can be expected to be of similar amount. As a result, almost all pictures by medical imaging that are used in Wikipedia originate from Wikipedia users (as can be seen by analyzing Category:Bone fractures for example) and are thus WP:OR, and would hence have to be removed if it was a requirement to be from MEDRS. Therefore, your suggestion has much broader implications than the ultrasonographies I have added to Wikipedia, so if you still insist on such a requirement, I suggest you bring it to WT:WikiProject Medicine. But another matter here has brought me back, and so I do reply.
Barbara, you argue, amazingly, insultingly, given the ease and connectedness of the wiki-universe, from embarrassingly limited evidence. Had you simply run my numbers at the English Wikipedia, you would have seen that your "four edits" comment was simply ridiculous, and unapologetically self- and status quo-serving. Moreover, note, apart from the hard record of my WP edits, these represent perhaps 20% of all my edits—I make a majority of my edits while not logged in, because I do not care, for the most part, to enter into discussions here. Life is too short. Finally, I am a published university Professor with far more real world scientific research and educational experience than most here—as you might have inferred, had you read my sufficiently informative, if intentionally vague User page. (It is vague, because I experienced harassment because of WP, after being outed here with regard to my University, by a disgruntled fellow WP editor.)
With regard to the earlier point, I will simply state, again: Your images, and images at WP in general, are being used as an "end around", to circumvent WP:OR and WP:VERIFY policies, setting up an alternative pathway of "just trust me" content at Wikipedia. While you may be acting within current accepted practice at WP, the practice is wrong, simply wrong, vis-a-vis the spirit of the underlying policies and guidelines of the place.
So, in choosing, the three of you, to satisfy the need of this young university editor for self-expression via his scientific image generation (rather than wait until they appear in a published journal, and he has the stature to negotiate with his publisher the right to place them in the public domain), instead, we publish them without the support of an authoritative associated publication. In doing so, we open the door a bit further to the import of unpublished, unsourced, non-peer-reviewed content.
So be it. If a picture is worth a thousand words, the trio of you are responsible for many kilobytes of unpublished content.
Worse, you punt on the opportunity to be a part of the solution, instead, extending the problem into new, ever more sophisticated arenas. The problem is not when trainees at good universities present unpublished images. The problem is the principles involved—that it opens the door to anyone here to do the same, in any arena (and we fight this daily in chemistry articles); moreover, that it defies the very basis, the very foundation of the place, that our reliability is based on use of published information of the highest quality available.
When the estimable Mr Häggström grows disinterested or too busy to keep an eye on his work, it is the accepted policies and practices that will (or in this case, fail) to maintain encyclopedic quality. And the contribution of this trio of you, to fail to engage the substantive deep discussion, to instead respond superficially, and thus to extend the exception and allow the continued use of unpublished images not associated with any scholarly venue—its simply a shame. On you, and on the place. Nothing more from me, but I will, at every juncture, continue to paste in my objection, whenever a student queries them to me, whenever I happen upon them.

I agree Wikipedia and its reliability are not perfect, but neither are traditional journals. They either put your work behind a pay-wall or charge you around a thousand dollars to make your work open access, and even then it remains copyrighted, which impairs its usage. Wikipedia, on the other hand, is the 6th most visited site in the world [22] and it is estimated that 50% to 70% of physicians use it as a source of health care information [23], and those are major reasons why I'll continue contributing to it.

I've now added entries to the image. I added effects of possible explosion for the eyes, but I'm not sure the death rate is any notable from e-cigarette explosions. Nicotine poisoning related to e-cigarettes include ingestion, inhalation, or absorption via the skin or eyes.[1]
E-cigarette calls to US poison control centers:
Minor, moderate, and serious adverse effects involved children and adults.[2] Minor effects correlated with e-cigarette liquid poisoning were tachycardia, tremor, chest pain and hypertension.[3] More serious effects were bradycardia, hypotension, nausea, respiratory paralysis, atrial fibrillation and dyspnea.[3] The exact correlation is not fully known between these effects and e-cigarettes.[3] More than 50% of e-cigarette calls to US poison control centers were related to young children.[2]
The most frequent adverse effects to e-cigarettes and e-liquid reported to US poison control centers:

Hello Mikael Häggström - a first query re the latest review - just to check whether you are in agreement with all the proposals. They would make the page different from the usual style of Wikipedia entries in the use of Fig 1. Fig 2. etc. Rendering all the images as black and white would see the removal of those that rely on colour for their meaning. Hi Iztwoz. There are indeed many comments on the layout. I will check with the board which of them we will recommend, and I will get back to you afterwards. As for the coloring, the images should not be rendered black and white, but I think the point is that they should optimally be marked or properly described in the caption so their information is preserved even if you would print the article in black and white. Sorry for lack of communication. I must admit that I didn't take in Ashashyou's last comment here - I thought that more work was being asked for. I did add some of the recommended files wasn't sure about some and felt as well not enough room in the relevant sections. I meant to ask you about sources added some where clear - do those files in Commons need the uploader's mention? I agree that suggestions made could be introduced in the future. I'm sorry too, Iztwoz, for somewhat unclear guidelines in this matter. In this case we basically have one version of the article in Wikipedia - Hippocampus - and one version in Wikiversity - Wikiversity:Draft:WikiJournal of Medicine/The Hippocampus. I've copied your Wikipedia article edits to Wikiversity this time (but in the future, we will probably just have a short summary in Wikiversity until the peer review process is finished). And yes, WikiJournal guidelines include that files from commons should have a mention of the creator/uploader of the image. I showed the preferable formatting for figure 5 in the article: The_Hippocampus#Functions. Note that this guidelines does not apply to the Wikipedia version of the article, so it should only be done in the Wikiversity version. Otherwise, I'd like you to make all further changes in both versions. After the article is published in WikiJournal, you can always edit the Wikipedia version, but you should then only make technical edits or spelling error corrections to the WikiJournal version. If you want to make changes in the meaning of the text therein, you should suggest them at the talk page, since they may require a new peer review before the WikiJournal article can be updated. Just wanted to comment that I found your animations interesting and useful -- though nowhere nearly as extreme as the two experiences with SS that I've had. I thought the first time was a detached retina until it magically went back to normal after about 20 minutes; the second time I at least was able to recognize it as the same problem. Quite terrifying, and very glad to finally know what it is. Your animations are what made it clear that this was the correct diagnosis of the events. Hello Mikael - have just noticed your removal of some see also items with an edit note to describe same in text - the thing is once they've been removed they are not going to be noticed again. I often just unload items to See also's as I come across them - then any editor can make use of them at some time. Is this not the right way to go about things? I've created a new Wikipedia page called Open Bite Malocclusion. The word open bite is a slang term and should properly be addressed as Open Bite Malocclusion. In addition, this article was previously redirected to the article "Malocclusion" which did not have much information about open bite. Thus I request the reviewer to check out the new page Open Bite Malocclusion and allow that page to be the primary article for open bite and delete this page.

Yes, but that should wait until the draft article is in the main space. Also it will just involve changing the target of the redirect, it would not involved deletion of the current target (the malocclusion article). I noticed that the citations of the journal are confined only to medical galleries. I think if any researcher wants to cite something from a text published in WJM, he just cites the original reference. That is the reason why there are no citations for text articles. This makes WJM articles no different from Wikipedia articles. I think PubMed indexing is very important to attract editors and attracting editor is, in turn, essential for indexing, it's a vicious circle. -Brainist (talk) 23:42, 15 November 2017 (UTC)

Hello, Mikael Häggström. When you moved Washout to a new title and then redirected the old title to a disambiguation page, you may not have been aware of WP:FIXDABLINKS, which says:
When creating disambiguation pages, fix all resulting mis-directed links.
Before moving an article to a qualified name (in order to create a disambiguation page at the base name, to move an existing disambiguation page to that name, or to redirect that name to a disambiguation page), click on What links here to find all of the incoming links. Repair all of those incoming links to use the new article name.
One way of looking at Wikidata relates it to the semantic web concept, around for about as long as Wikipedia, and realised in dozens of distributed Web institutions. It sees Wikidata as supplying central, encyclopedic coverage of linked structured data, and looks ahead to greater support for "federated queries" that draw together information from all parts of the emerging network of websites.
Another perspective might be likened to a photographic negative of that one: Wikidata as an already-functioning Web hub. Over half of its properties are identifiers on other websites. These are Wikidata's "external links", to use Wikipedia terminology: one type for the DOI of a publication, another for the VIAF page of an author, with thousands more such. Wikidata links out to sites that are not nominally part of the semantic web, effectively drawing them into a larger system. The crosswalk possibilities of the systematic construction of these links was covered in Issue 8.
Wikipedia:External links speaks of them as kept "minimal, meritable, and directly relevant to the article." Here Wikidata finds more of a function. On viaf.org one can type a VIAF author identifier into the search box, and find the author page. The Wikidata Resolver tool, these days including Open Street Map, Scholia etc., allows this kind of lookup. The hub tool by maxlath takes a major step further, allowing both lookup and crosswalk to be encoded in a single URL.
Around the time in February when Wikidata clicked past item Q50000000, another milestone was reached: the mix'n'match tool uploaded its 1000th dataset. Concisely defined by its author, Magnus Manske, it works "to match entries in external catalogs to Wikidata". The total number of entries is now well into eight figures, and more are constantly being added: a couple of new catalogs each day is normal.
Since the end of 2013, mix'n'match has gradually come to play a significant part in adding statements to Wikidata. Particularly in areas with the flavour of digital humanities, but datasets can of course be about practically anything. There is a catalog on skyscrapers, and two on spiders.
These days mix'n'match can be used in numerous modes, from the relaxed gamified click through a catalog looking for matches, with prompts, to the fantastically useful and often demanding search across all catalogs. I'll type that again: you can search 1000+ datasets from the simple box at the top right. The drop-down menu top left offers "creation candidates", Magnus's personal favourite. m:Mix'n'match/Manual for more.
For the Wikidatan, a key point is that these matches, however carried out, add statements to Wikidata if, and naturally only if, there is a Wikidata property associated with the catalog. For everyone, however, the hands-on experience of deciding of what is a good match is an education, in a scholarly area, biographical catalogs being particularly fraught. Underpinning recent rapid progress is an open infrastructure for scraping and uploading.

As you probably recall, my interest in Miraheze was inspired by the need for private wikis where students can write. I noticed that Ourproject.org might have that option. Mikael, quick question. We're making extensive use of your svg images for VideoWiki, but when added to videos the background is black. I've been saving the svg with a white background in photoshop, and resaving as a new png. Is there an easier method or a version without a transparent background? Ian Furst, I'm glad you're finding my images useful! Indeed, the background in these images is generally transparent, and I've seen myself how it is sometimes rendered as black in some programs. An easier method of avoiding this issue may be to save it as jpg (which does not support transparent backgrounds), and hopefully it will then work in your video software without further conversion. Ian Furst, I recommend that you simply replace my images with the white background ones, at least for png images. I sometimes do updates and corrections, and then it's easier to just update one version, and I think a white background is generally beneficial. Mikael, I'm hoping you could give me some advice and direction. We'd like to create an animated svg file, with text in a blank state, for videos. It would look something like this, but using your symptoms slide. Since we use your symptoms slides on almost every Videowiki, and it's 15sec of a static picture, it would be good to add some animations without having to recreate it for every disease. My thought was that if we could create something like the blank-state animated svg I showed, for various symptoms that would pop-up depending on the need it would be more dynamic. Once we get the technique correct (and bugs out), we can recruit others to do it for other templated animated graphics. For instance, right now we talk about the initial symptoms of dengue as fever, headache, abdominal pain and muscle/joint pains. It's shown with your Dengue fever symptoms svg image. We could also use the same for the critical phase, or recovery. What if the code for the graphic looked more like a template {{File:Symptoms animation.svg|fever|headache|abdominal pain|muscle and joint pain}} with each attribute 'pointing' to a specific area (when left blank, nothing shows). Hi, can you help me answer a query we have received via OTRS. In the article Inguinal canal in APril last year you added an explanatory footnote about the diameter of the canal: The text reads " In males, its diameter is normally 2 cm (±1 cm in standard deviation) at the deep inguinal ring" and the footnote you added "The diameter has been estimated to be ±2.2cm ±1.08cm in Africans, and 2.1 cm 0.41 ±0.58cm in Europeans." The correspondent and I must admit me too, can't make sense of this footnote, can you clarify it? Neither of us understand a third figure in the second example; "2.1 cm ±0.58cm" would make sense but we don't get the 0.41cm and we assume that the first should read "2.2cm ±1.08cm". The term "traffic code" implies just that -- a single code of traffic rules. The title "traffic code in the United States" implies that there is one code for the country. That makes zero sense because as the article explains, traffic law in the United States is mostly a matter of state law and it varies like crazy from state to state.
Go read up on Law of the United States and in particular, the Tenth Amendment to the United States Constitution. Speed limits in the United States gives some idea of the mind-boggling extent of interstate diversity (one could write an article just as long about almost every major traffic rule). The Uniform Vehicle Code never helped much because state legislatures didn't adopt it as a single package. They often adopted only one or two sections at a time (not in the sequence or numbering recommended by the UVC) and often rewrote the recommended text, which defeats the entire point of a uniform act. --Coolcaesar (talk) 02:05, 19 June 2020 (UTC)

it seems obvious to me, but since some collegues want to reuse the above mentioned image in a scientific manner, we want to make sure to get it right: Was the thorax x-ray taken in a.p. method on a patient lying in bed? On wikipedia, the "AP" is only readable when scrolling down to the summary and then checking for "other versions", so it raised some eyebrows in my team wether we could use this as a source-information.
I would be very happy if you could lighten up things for us on this topic.

Hello Mikael - would you reconsider your changes from superficial femoral vein to 'subsartorial' this term is not at all generally recognised. The general usage has been recommended to just use femoral vein as per the long standing misunderstandings generated by the use of superficial to a deep vein. Its use on many files as with 'subsartorial artery' is confusing and unhelpful as a search for these terms is fruitless. Kind regards --Iztwoz (talk) 11:31, 10 February 2023 (UTC)
Hello Iztwoz. Thank you for the review, and those are valid points, but overall I think this usage is justified. It is true that I have cited a work where I am the author (Subsartorial Vessels as Replacement Names for Superficial Femoral Vessels - I can email it to you if the online pdf is temporarily unavailable), but as it is in a peer reviewed journal, is is acceptable use as per Wikipedia:Identifying and using self-published works. Pragmatically, I do think the subsartorial name should be mentioned first, as the superficial one is discouraged. Simply calling the entire segment femoral is practically not enough, since clinicians often need to specify the location, such as in thrombosis where there is a lower risk in the subsartorial vein compared to the common femoral vein (more of this in my article). Adding it myself in Wikipedia may be viewed as a promotion of medical practice (conflict of interest), but the usage is reflected in multiple peer reviewed articles:
As per WP:COIM, this potential conflict of interest "does not mean that material from a conflicted source or editor should necessarily be dismissed" and I think readers of those listed articles should be able to find the item in Wikipedia. I might have created some undue weight in the relatively long description of this segment compared to the common femoral one, but I have now amended this by expanding the common femoral segments in the Femoral vein and Femoral artery articles. Mikael - since the renaming was your suggestion the other uses cited (all post 2019) may have taken their lead from the page. If it was an already established use it wouldn't have needed suggesting renaming? The use is stated to be only sometimes referred to - so why change to a widely unaccepted term? The part on diagrams widely altered refers to the femoral vein which is the current terminology. Usage is of the femoral continuing as the common femoral - superficial femoral is not used in major textbooks post 2005 if not before (it does still appear in various papers) and is actively discouraged. The 'newer' terminology is that of the consensus papers presented in 2001 and 2004. Since the use of superficial is redundant and to be discouraged where is the need for this newer renaming? Iztwoz, we can not assume that other publications have taken after the Wikipedia pages. I have supported this naming to fellow physicians and scholars, and I have made presentations at conferences, in a manner that you would expect any scholar to present their work even before Wikipedia existed. The need for an alternative name for the femoral artery/vein segment is justified by the same reasons as for the common femoral artery/vein - mainly that it is clinically important to be able to specify the segment, particularly in angiology and vascular surgery, even if it is not currently listed in Terminologia Anatomica. The discouragement of using superficial is not because of any redundancy, but to avoid patients being erroneously denied anticoagulant therapy for thrombosis in this segment (because the treating physicians may believe it is a superficial vein thrombosis when it is actually a deep vein thrombosis). Despite repeated recommendations against usage of the term superficial femoral vein, it does still appear in modern textbooks:

Wikipedia is in the real world - what we write here has real consequences - and if we do not present the alternative to superficial femoral artery/vein, then there will be an increased risk of people dying from untreated deep vein thrombosis. Yet, I have now clarified in the femoral artery and femoral vein that these terms are not listed in Terminologia Anatomica, and the diagrams still mention the femoral artery and the femoral vein as specified in that reference work. The changes were arrived at by consensus of two authorities more than twenty years ago. These institutes of phlebology and angiology did not indicate the need for any further 'segmentation'.[47]. Thanks for the image you added. I noticed you had removed some "disputed" text. Do you dispute it or are you just reacting to the citation needed template? A whole bunch of them got added on 30 December 2020 and I never got round to looking up the sources. I think there were added more because the paragraphs lacked obvious citations than that the text was disputed. For example, this could be used for the comment about AMLs. I do mean to get round to updating the citations, just keep forgetting/putting it off. And I'm rather busy at the moment IRL so it isn't top priority. -- Colin°Talk09:02, 23 March 2023 (UTC)
In my opinion, the addition of the "citation needed" tag makes something disputed unless it is obviously like WP:The sky is blue (which rarely applies to medical articles), and should be deleted after some time if nobody adds a reference. I think the language of policy uses "disputed" for genuine cases where an editor truly believes the claim is not true or unlikely to be true, rather than for run-of-the-mill "I think this is the sort of thing that needs a citation, but it might well be absolutely fine, I just can't be arsed to google it" {{cn}} tagging. The point is, if I genuinely thought you disputed this text, I'd ask you why you think it is wrong/misleading/outdated/etc and whether any citation I found was good enough to counter your doubts or negativity about the text. I noticed you changed a few page numbers in artificial intelligence#Transparency. I think we may be working from different editions of Christian's book.
