Hi Mean! Why did you delete the truth?

Hi Mean! I'm not sure I'm doing this appropriately or correctly, however I'll take a stab at it. I'm writing in regard to a User page I began last night, which represents my first ever contribution to Wikipedia. I created an account last evening, and read some, but not all, of the multitude of documentation on what is expected and required from, and proper etiquette for, contributors. I'm sure I've made some mistakes....

My intent is not commercial, self-promoting, or dissemination of opinion. There has been some upheaval in the Apple computer user community, revolving around the recent release of the new OS, Mac OS X 10.7, known as Lion. We've been discussing solutions, and my thought was that the procedure I posted on this Wikipedia User page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Almage) would a) be beneficial to the Apple user community and b) allow folks who have been working on figuring out ways to solve problems related to this new OS release to contribute to the procedure for which this page was created.

It now appears that I've triggered some issue with someone (yourself) charged with overseeing the "quality" of the Wikipedia. I just discovered this 'talk' page and interface, after I clicked on the "undo" link for the modification you made to my User page. I performed this 'undo', as I did not realize that blanking the page was not a result of random contributor who for whatever reason felt that blanking the page was the thing to do.

I would very much like to exchange information about the appropriateness or inappropriateness of the procedure information being posted on Wikipedia - hopefully this talk entry is the proper method to begin such.

The only problem was that the content had no relevance at all to Wikipedia. It may be of benefit to the Apple user community, but not to the Wikipedia user community. Although I am concerned with the quality of Wikipedia (and that includes user pages), I hold no official position. Maybe, but it had no relation to Wikipedia; per policy guidelines - "Generally, you should avoid substantial content on your user page that is unrelated to Wikipedia. Wikipedia is not a general hosting service, so your user page is not a personal website. Data Management Inc. company page

Thank you for reviewing my article. This was my first attempt at researching a company and it met with a lot of resistance in the beginning for a lack of notability and other concerns. So I went back and re-worked the whole article, adding at least 12 sources, including the New York Times and Miami Herald, and personal interviews with vice presidents at Data Management Inc. I avoided opinions and limited it to facts uncovered by my research.

My agenda with this article is to inform. My research will hopefully help people understand who this company is, what they create, and their growth over the years. I was inspired by the Microsoft and Google wikis (though my article is nothing by comparison). Where Data Management Inc. began in 1988 and where it is now is what inspired me to tell their story. Once I re-worked it, I understood that it fell within the guidelines of Wikipedia.

I noticed your request that I tone down the promotional material. I have a tendency in my writing to be a little wordy and colorful, so I re-read the article, and then read it again. Unfortunately I can't find anything that was an opinion or suggests a superior product. My research revealed when and how this company started, what products and services they offer, and significant milestones in the company's history. I wanted to ask you to help me. Is there something in particular that leaps off the page at you - something that I can change so that it doesn't rub you as promotional? This article is not intended as a marketing tool, but to inform (as other wikis are doing - Microsoft, Google, Adobe). If there is any thing that I can do that would help make this article sound more like a "just the facts" article then please let me know, and I'll see what I can do.

There was little seriously wrong with the article. The main things I was concerned about was the over-use of the "solutions" buzzword, and the peacocky mission statement, which together made the article sound a little promotional in tone. . . Mean as custard (talk) 17:20, 13 October 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for getting back to me. On my use of the word "solutions," I wasn't sure how else to refer to the different delivery systems. Maybe I'll use the word delivery system, option, release, version, or system. "Solutions" was just a generic term I picked up for various products (software and hardware that serve as the merchant's suggested solution to a specific problem). I can see how that word may send a different message so I'll take care of it.

I didn't remember including the mission statement, but records show that there was one. It looks like it was removed.

The statement seemed to capture the company's purpose and value of stakeholders so I included it. My research has shown that they have a history of developing systems that meet the needs defined by their customers. They also appear to promote good values in their people since the founder and management team both attribute their success to those values. So I included it since their history is consistent with that statement, but I also included it since other articles such as Google's wikipedia article mention a part of their mission statement.

Willow Wren numbers

Thanks for finding the US Kestrel. According to Ellison there were 7 Willow Wrens (BGA 162, 201, 202, 243, 245, 278 and an Australian, built by F.M Hamilton). Do you have a citeable source for the revision to six or know which one is disputed?TSRL (talk) 09:24, 19 October 2011 (UTC)

G243 is shown in Ellison as the "Red Wren" and hence is a re-registration of the Crested Wren owned by Eustace Thomas.

Certainly true that Ellison, puzzlingly, has two Red Wren's and the quotes you've found strongly support the identification. The BGA registration records ought to show the re-reg 178 (1934) -> 243 (1936) to nail it.TSRL (talk) 13:53, 19 October 2011 (UTC)

I respect what you told me last time when I requested to post information on your Ground Rent page but I have now added a page to my website which only provides information to interested parties and doesn't try to sell them anything.

I am interested in adding information about Head Leases and their function under the section of your text called ===English===

The text which I would like to include from my website source is: -

A head lease is a lease between a tenant and a landlord in which overall contractual responsibility is given to one identifiable tenant called the head lessee. This form of lease normally relates to an entire building where the individual units are sold off on long leases known as under leases.

Can you please tell me if you will allow me to do so as I would very much like to post some revelant information on your page and I am asking your permission first as I do not want to annoy you or Wikipedia?

There just seems to be an overall bias towards telling us how marvelous the company is, with little coverage of neutral or adverse factors, such as how and why the organisation was set up, its history and any critical comment. . . Mean as custard (talk) 12:28, 2 November 2011 (UTC)

Revision of AUS site

Hello Mean, I have updated the American University of Sharjah site and you reverted it back to the old site, saying it was blatantly promotional. I was just giving the facts about the university. It is mainly due to the overall promotional tone of the changes, the excessive use of links to external sites (chiefly the university's own web pages), and the inclusion of uncited "facts" such as:

"Its members contribute actively to the guidance and evaluation of the progress of the university, in order to uphold its academic excellence."

"fosters excellence in teaching, learning and research"

"AUS is working towards creating a culture of sustainability and has set a great example by the opening in 2011 of a state-of-the-art School of Business and Management (SBM) facility"

"AUS places great emphasis on the development of the non-academic aspect of a student’s university life"

"Dedicated to students’ interests and hobbies"

Exsite Webware

I removed the AfD tag because Exsite Webware is Free Open Source Software (FOSS). While not always "notable", FOSS is verifiable. It can be downloaded and installed by anyone. It's also widely used, which can be verified by a Google Search. At the time the article was written, FOS software didn't need to be notable, mainly because it's always verifiable. However, I could be wrong in this so please correct me if I have misunderstood. Santamoly (talk) 22:45, 10 February 2012 (UTC)

OK, but all articles need at least to give an indication of why the subject is notable. A piece of software may be verifiable, but if it is only used at an obscure research establishment by three men and a dog, then it is not notable. It has always been clear that Free Open Source Software (FOSS) doesn't need to be "notable" since it is verifiable. Thus your request that I explain why is puzzling. What is needed in the article is references to sources not directly connected with the software, for example independent reviews in widely-distributed magazines, or references in mainstream publications to show it is has lasting notability. It's quite possible that you're mistaken. Free Open Source Software doesn't require establishing "notability". I offered the list of users to clarify the size of the user base since you were suggesting that the software might only be "used at an obscure research establishment by three men and a dog", but it appears that you deleted the list. Did you delete the list of users to support your notion that the software is only used by "three men and a dog"? This appears to be an improper response, so please let me know what you were thinking. We can continue with the non-issue of notability once we clarify why you're pursuing the "three men and a dog" idea. Santamoly (talk) 04:16, 20 February 2012 (UTC)

Buzzwords on Kenexa page

At Kenexa, there is no explanation on the talk page for buzzwords that need to be eliminated. This is not Simple English Wikipedia, and there are links to many of the terms shown. Questions about [A2E] deletions

• How a listing of certificates a company has (and you just deleted off from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/America_II_Electronics) constitutes advertising? Is it not allowed on wikipedia to list a companies legit certifications?

As the section began with "At the heart of America II lies a commitment to total customer satisfaction. . . America II is committed to fulfilling the quality needs of our customers", it was clearly intended as advertising. A mention (not a list) of certifications may be acceptable if a reference to a third-party independent source shows it is significant.

• Also, other pages like http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heilind_Electronics list articles, so I thought that it is okay to list articles when properly pointing them to the source, can I have those back? or can you tell me what is wrong with them, so I can fix.

I have fixed this article as external links are not encouraged on Wikipedia, per guidelines on WP:EL.

• I listed citation to the "one of the largest independent companies" statement, is [Electronic Sourcing] not considered a legit reliable source?

I couldn't find this in the reference given.

Blanking a User Page without fair warning for a first violation and a debatable one at that

Dear Mean as Custard,

While I understand that people are prone to abusing open communities and someone has to police it, a fair warning would have made me change the user page immediately, why blank it?

Your contribution by blanking my user page was not constructive and you should be aware of that. Mean as Custard, being anonymous does not mean to not have responsibility. This is a very minor issue, but your transgression made me look into your reputation online and found at least one reference to abusive behaviour from you and it being like mud on wikipedia's respectability.

Note regarding Wells International School changes

I reverted your a portion of the changes you had made to this page (for which you had cited "tone down promotional material") due to the requirement laid out by the International Baccalaureate when referencing a school's status as an IB candidate school. (See http://www.ibo.org/school/candidate/) I did leave out the links for the Facebook and Twitter pages according to your changes, though I did return the link to independent reviews. To date, there simply haven't been negative reviews added to that site, which does not justify its removal as an external source of information regarding the school. You clearly have a conflict of interest with the subject. You removed all the independent references and added lots of external links to your own site, as well as adding promotional new content. "R" signs. "TM", copyright symbols etc. are discouraged in Wikipedia, as they tend to be a hallmark of a promotional article. The fact that the products are patented by Guardian Ind. is probably not significant unless, for example, the trademark has been infringed or challenged in a notable way, in which case this may be mentioned in the article. I am not promoting my University any more than The University of Exeter, Graz, Iowa, Delft, Stockholm, MIT - all are already on the wikipedia "Biocatalysis" webpage. They are all key academic partners of ours - we are part of the same close network, and routinely collaborate with these institutions. Reference 6 "Nicholas J. Turner" is of direct relevance - Prof. Turner is director of CoEBio3. He is a leading expert in the field of Biocatalysis and as such should be an external link.
