Eric Dier

Have you ever seen Eric Dier play? Because he is guilty of all the things I listed on a consistant basis, and I'm a Tottenham fan so i watch all their games. Under 'Style of Play' you've said what he's good at - why not also include what he's not good at/needs to improve? (or i hope he will as a Tottenham fan). Hi Mattythewhite, I'm not used to make contributions here ans sorry if I'm not doing it in the right way, you can really help me here since there's a lot of edits (multiple languages) to correct this common mistake (his name). I would probably mess with something if I do it all by myself. About the source regarding my change, I personally asked him today but I know this is not a tangible source for wikipedia. Given that, searching around some football player databases from many sites i've find out that his FIFA profile has the right spelling (without the accents), I think this is the most official source to use as a reference. There it says either FC Basel or FC Zurch(Excelsor). It makes more sense for it to be FC Basel since they do indeed use the same colors(shades, in fact) as FC Barcelona. There seems to be some confusion to me, as to where someone comes from? I appreciate that where someone is born, is where they're from in one context. However, where a person is raised or lives should count also? A person may originate from a few places (though in reality not too many clearly!) For example I could show you where Ollie McBurnie lived as a kid, but that too was removed, as the editor didn't seem to think Garforth was in Leeds? I know an actress that was born somewhere different to where actually stated, but nope can't prove it??! :) Obviously I won't re-edit this profile until something more substantial comes along in print or on the internet!, Although I know it's correct! I happen to own Barry Hugman's PFA Who's Who (2008/09 edition), the very same source listed in the article, and it lists Olofinjana's DOB as 30 June 1980. So does his website: [2]. Seasick Steve

Hi Matty

IP editor (:80.195.100.70) who i see you have warned for unsourced editing is now doing the same on the Seasick Steve page. The editor is trying to change the name and age on this long standing, well sourced article, based on an unauthorised biography which came out in 2016. The book has claimed that Seasick Steve had a different last name other than Wold and changed his name in 1982 when he married his wife. The book. somehow has gotten its own section in the article. So far, I have not been able to find one example myself where an unauthorised biography has got its own section on an artist Wikipedia page. However this has happened, the point for me, is that the information is there in the article if someone wants to follow it up. This editor keeps trying to add this other name and age at the top of the article without citation and with the only source, as far as I can tell, being the book itself and a review of the same book in a music blog. In my opinion, this just confuses the article and even if true, is just like going to a Women celebrity's page and trying to add her maiden name just to make sure everyone knows she had a different name at one time. In my opinion this violates, WP:BLP I have reverted the unsourced edit twice but I am sure the IP editor is determined to keep editing in this manner. I would appreciate it if you could have a look and let me know if I am on the right track here. I am new to wikipedia and an addition (a table with managerial statistics) to the Manuel Pellegrini article was rejected/undone. (TW)) I included references/citations for the addition where relevant (the structure of the addition is similar and references are similar to Pep Guardiola's page). Why was my addition rejected? I guess the reason that I thought it was ok/acceptable was as follows

(1) Pep Guardiola’s page has such a table within the article’s managerial statistics section. I find this extra data very interesting (I like stats) and I think that the article is better for having this data. Overall performance data is not as interesting (to me) as season by season.

(2) I don’t quite see why other articles cannot have a similar structure to Pep’s article. For example, the fact that Mourinho’s article doesn’t have a more detailed table (like the Guardiola article) is beyond me.

(3) In terms of WP:NOTSTATS, only 3. seems to apply to this case. If this is correct, then I would say that the stats had context (as much as Guardiola’s article) and were in a table and readable.

Matty, is the anon user that keeps reverting me here onto something? They said in a summary "tidy citation (the order of the fields is fixed by the template, not the preferences of a random editor." (is this correct in any way? I usually write/display the source fields in the same way because if/when I need to correct something - mostly titles - I know exactly where this or that is located, and no one has reverted me on that until now. Plus, their summary (ESPECIALLY if the guideline does not exist as such) strikes me as a bit confrontational and/or condescending (I admit when I use exaggerated/idiotic summaries you know that, that does not mean I cannot point out that mistake in others I think). In the language department, I try to be colourful without being unencyclopedical of course, that is why I replaced one "draw at" instance with the also correct "away draw against" also in the So'ton sub-section, but they're having none of that.

Perhaps I may be permitted to explain myself. I think the wording "2–2 draw at Newcastle United" is simply cleaner than "2–2 away draw against Newcastle United", although it is not something I would go to war about. As for the order of the fields within the citation, this is so trivial it is not worth arguing about. If you use the Cite Web template from the drop down menu in the editing toolbar, this places the fields in a particular order, although this differs from the order in the template documentation, which is the order preferred by User:Quite A Character. Ultimately, it makes not a jot of difference as the order displayed in the citation is always the same, regardless of the order in which they are input in the wikitext. (I hope that's clear.) If an editor wants to spend his time changing the order in the wikitext, that's his choice. I try to avoid using "[result] at [club]". Regarding [club], if we were talking about a place that wording would make sense, but we're talking about a club. Jonathan Grounds

It's another one of those football players which have external websites displaying more than one date of birth for that player. Soccerbase and Soccerway both display your version of 2 February 1988 while the Birmingham City FC Twitter account announces his birthdays on 27 February in certain years, plus some other rarely used websites and a couple of other wikis out there. Perhaps Birmingham FC Twitter may want to alter the details as to announce Ground's birthday properly. I do believe you are correct with the change of dob. Iggy (Swan) 21:53, 1 April 2018 (UTC)

Unfortunately, "the usual sources" are all effectively the same source. Once one gets it wrong, for whatever reason – a typo that left the 7 off 27? – it stays wrong. Mr Grounds doesn't have the sort of entourage that goes round correcting errors as soon as they appear, nor is he the sort of chap to do it himself. His 2004/05 Middlesbrough academy profile had 27th. The Evening Gazette mentioned "Jonathan Grounds celebrating his 19th birthday with yet another composed display at left-back" in their match report for 27 Feb 2008; mind you, it would have been his 20th... By 2010, his Middlesbrough profile had 2nd. His Oldham profile had 27th, although I can't prove it because the archive.org copy doesn't contain those details and the archive.is version has them buried under a splash.

None of this proves which is correct and which is the mistake: it might have been a typo that added a spurious 7 to the 2. But, every year since he joined, his current club has wished him happy birthday via Twitter on the 27th – a very visible date on the club's calendar, as the anniversary of the 2011 Carling Cup. That's such a public thing that had it been wrong, you'd think Mr Grounds or his friends on Twitter might well have bothered to correct it, or taken the piss out of the club for getting such a thing wrong. Pity he's deleted his Twitter: someone with an account could have asked him. I have had a look on Mr. Grounds' Birmingham City profile on the club's website which says the dob displays '02 FEB 1988', yet an archive copy of the Birmingham City profile in August 2014 also says '2nd February 1988'. With this posted in 2015, I can't think of a reason why this was announced on the incorrect day of the year when the club website says the amended version as changed by Mattythewhite yesterday. Untitled

Eliaquim Mangala the French footballer on loan from Manchester City to Everton has won the Premier League and EFl Cup this season but there isn't anything about this in his honours list on his wikipedia page. He has 9 appearances in the Premier League so that warrants a medal and he also recieved an EFL Cup medal as can be seen from his official Twitter account where he is holding the medal ( can be found at https://twitter.com/Elia22Mangala/status/973501833359609856). So kind of them (this chap/gal https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:176.23.119.207#February_2018), after returning from suspension they pulled a Vinnie Jones-like "contribution" soon after, in the habitual fashion (replacing the ENTIRE BK Avarta squad with the Sporting CP one)...

Unusual vandalism

Something unusual is happening with some of today's edits re Burnley FC related articles - some "Youtube Vizeh" vandalism has reached a few articles by many IP addresses (and the occasional account or two). Thankfully I have noticed (some of) that quite quickly and reverted. I have never seen that type before though. Iggy (Swan) 17:00, 19 April 2018 (UTC)

Quique Flores

Just out of curiosity: 1 - is there any other word we can use for a club letting go of a coach rather than "dismiss/dismissal" (assuming that "fire"/"sack" are incorrect, never thought they were! Both are a 100%-correct term for when an individual loses their job, why should sports be any different?), to avoid having to repeat the same term until the cows come home? 2 - is there anything wrong with inserting the CORRECT titles of sources in the statistical chart below (i know, i was wrong - beats me why - to remove the double publisher/work field in the Soccerbase/Soccerway refs, could not help myself, but the rest...)?

Sorry for taking so long to reply, just paid the due attention to your comeback today as i was caught up in various other articles at this encyclopedia of ours :) So, let's address the two topics duly:

1 - what do you suggest other than "sack/fire"? "Relieved of one's duties"? I'm not going to discuss the reliability of "sack" with a native speaker of course, but i thought at least "fire" would be encyclopedical. Not taking this guy's word for it, of course (!), but i thought it was of more or less widespread usage, it's very probably i've been seeing it wrong all this time; i'm not being picky kind fellow user (at least i'd like to think you won't think ill of me on this one), just trying to be colourful in my wording at the same time as encyclopedical.

2 - correct titles (or what i perceive as being such): take for instance source #40, if you click there you will a title that stands out (due to size, etc) at the top-left corner, "Quique: Enrique Sánchez Flores". The rest ("Matches", "Getafe", "Season", etc), i don't see those as pertaining to the main title of the source. AGAIN, maybe i'm not getting the technicality right.

On this edit that you made to Edwin van der Sar, I have noticed that, when you've removed bracketed numbers, applying WP:PSEUDOHEAD etc., a ref error was introduced on the Golden Glove 2008–09 reference with the name 'PL'. Nothing in the Premier League source is disputed, so I don't see why a secondary reference would be required. I'd recommend you take a look at WP:CITEKILL. With all due respect Matty, really? Do we need two lines/entries for the same trophy in honours? If the previous approach was not correct (and i imagine the pertinent discussions were held, it was I who missed out on them), don't we have any alternatives? In my experience, it is common to have separate honours, as in winners and runners-up in the same competition, on separate lines. Perhaps a user wiser than myself could mediate. @Struway2: Can I ask what your take is on these two versions? Mattythewhite (talk) 16:04, 2 May 2018 (UTC)

Don't think I have a definite view, to be honest; don't tend to work on articles for players with strings of honours, and if I do, they generally don't include runners-ups. Not sure why we'd include sitting on the losers' bench in the glorified friendlies that were the 2011 and 2014 Supercopa de España as honours while omitting the 2008–09 Premier League runners-up spot to which he contributed 29 starts, either. If I were having separate rows, I'd put the runner-up row immediately below the corresponding winner row, rather than at the end of the list, and would omit the repeated name in favour of indenting the runner-up row. If keeping them together, then certainly no capital letter for runner-up.

  • runner-up: 2011, 2014
• Supercopa de España: 2012
• Supercopa de España runner-up: 2011, 2014

Just posted a WP:FOOTY thread, and the ONLY reply so far (please see here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Football#Honours_(yes,_honours)) conveys that it's not wrong to add finishes (1st, 2nd, etc) for same trophy in same line, so again i deduce it has everything to do with aesthetic preferences and nothing to do with editing consensuses.

So, i kindly ask: is it OK if i reinstate the previous approach or Mr. Arbeloa's honours, with the due compromise (name of club written inside quotation marks instead of the ";" symbol, runner-up/third place written BEFORE the two dots instead of AFTER even though i do not agree with that)? But as I queried in my edit summary, does appearing in an earlier round mean a player earns a medal? Genuine question. And bearing in mind different competitions will have different rules/standard regarding the distribution of medals. I know FA Cup winning clubs receive a set amount of medals, but it's never or at least rarely publicised which players actually received one (bar those who played in the final, of course). Plus, they added tons of info regarding Mr. Fonseca's managerial work in Ukraine, adding ZERO sources to go with it (no worries, i have already sourced the contents, and then some).

Not trying to be a nuisance or anything (not by a mile! My last message could have passed you by, with all the archiving and stuff), but what do you think of this "twist"? I emphasise, if a player scores (mind you, SCORES, not PLAYS) in any given previous round of a knockout tournament, he's entitled to the trophy/medal, right? I know I only showed you a wordpress article thus far for his FC quarter-final goal, but I can find a reliable source in a heartbeat.

If you still think this is not enough, I respect your decision and leave article as it is (I know Mr. Heinze won the 2004 Coupe de France Final, all I need to get by so to speak). Regarding the 2006 English League Cup he may not have featured at all (for what it's worth, I never delved in to confirm if SOCCERBASE is 100% reliable - though I imagine it is, at least for English/UK-based players - but the 2005/06 seasonal data for this player does not show him appearing once in the LC), due to the serious injury mentioned in his reference #11; matter settled here thus, we only need to focus in the French Cup (assuming it's not an open and shut case).

Ok adding the word "Controversial" could be interpreted as an opinion, but it WAS controversial, I'm hardly vandalising the page.

You have changed the word "Howler" to "Error". How is that any better? I would argue calling it an "Error" is an opinion.

Next you deleted the part that read "Rob Green started ahead of him". That is NOT an opinion therefore should have been left. I think it is a vital piece of information that should be added to the article.

Many apologies, apparently being named in a WORLD CUP Squad (sourced) for the 2018 FIFA World Cup which many would see as a pinnacle/achievement/honour of a lot of players careers, representing their country in a World Tournament, isn't actually worthy of note in the players careers (despite some players having posts about them being named in other FIFA national tournament squads on the page)? While I'm inclined to agree that (usually) a player playing in the final will get a medal, Eisa was an unused substitute and did not make any appearances in the tournament in the run-up, so in the absence of an explicit source we should not assume. GiantSnowman 15:12, 18 May 2018 (UTC)

It's almost impossible to find out who *officially* gets an FA Cup medal, so I don't fancy our chances with the EFL Trophy. I'll try and see if the EFL have published the rules and regulations of the tournament on their website, in the hope that it includes the criteria for receiving a medal, in the way the Premier League have. Here we go. Per the Checkatrade Trophy Regulations sections 24.1, 24.2 and 24.2.1, "A Trophy will be presented to the winners of the Competition and medals will be presented to the winners and runners-up. There shall be 23 medals to each of the Clubs participating in the final, to be allocated as follows: 18 for the Players nominated on the team sheet." Looks fine to me. I've had a look at the rules relating to medals for division winners, which states that the "League shall present to the Championship Club of each Division 23 souvenirs comprising 18 for the Players" and that "It shall be the responsibility of the Club to determine to which of its Players the souvenirs should be presented". Why can't they hand medals to players who reach a minimum number of appearances, it would make life much easier for us Wikipedia editors... Mattythewhite (talk) 17:54, 18 May 2018 (UTC)

Thanks for deleting my edits about the song "Mohamad Salah". I have no issues with it. You may have valid reasons to remove it. But simply because you are a football fan, here the song simply for your enjoyment. It shows the international appeal of Mo Salah. La Fouine just a month ago was #3 on French Singles Chart though with another song. So he is a very well established notable artist. I'm not having this. What's the problem? I've been editing with plenty of sources. Not every single sentence has to have a source to back it up. The fact that the 'career statistics' section backs up everything I've written should be enough to know that players made three, four or just one appearance in the FA Cup. I feel you're just nitpicking. You reverted the 'honours' edits, which I can accept even though I think it's ridiculous that players who played a part (some of whom fairly important roles) in the cup campaign aren't credited with an honour...but I get it, Wikipedia has different rules and certain moderators pick them. Things like this though (threatening to block) put people off editing in general. So Wikipedia can find someone else to do the stats next season...like I did most weeks in 2017-18. Soccer/football player and league notability

Hi Mattythewhite, Good day. I am one of the reviewers for NPP and AfC. I believe you are one of the active members in WikiProject football for such I come here to see your advice.

As my understanding, the NSS for soccer need to meet the WP:NSOCCER guidelines to consider notable where the player has played in Tier 1 international match as defined by FIFA or who has played at least a match between two fully professional leagues as defined by WikiProject Football associate football. Questions:

1. In League notability stated all leagues/clubs are "assumed" notable if their members are eligible for national cup/ rank in th country's highest level. In this sense, would the league consider notable even it is not considered "fully professional club" which listed in WP:FPL?
2. if the team is in top seat of the league, then the players play under the club would consider notable?
3. if the club drops off from the top ranking of the league, what happens to the player notability?
4. it indicates at #Player notability|Player notability that WP:Notability (sports) superseded WP:FOOTYN and also my understanding (I cant find the link and I dont remember where I read it) GNG superseded both general SSN and specific SSN. I have encountered, players passed GNG but fails specific WP:FOOTYN and the articles were deleted at AfD (I understand outcome of the AfD depends on the participants and their reasons at that specific AfD at that time). I would usually vote notability based on SSN at AfD discussion page. What is your take here and why?
5. What constitutes a "fully professional league" by WikiProject football?

Sorry to bother you again, but could you mediate at Paulo Fonseca (last/first time I asked you about my version of the article you told me "looks fine to me")? Please send a message to the other user, as I fear my approach would not be quite "up to par".

What did they do again/now? 1 - one might discuss that the youth clubs coached don't belong in the infobox, but again they removed THREE senior clubs, established by the ZEROZERO source and the FORADEJOGO external link (and C.D. Pinhalnovense, which he took to the quarter-finals of the Taça de Portugal TWICE - sourced in storyline - is also displayed in his SOCCERWAY entry); 2 - career sumup in intro removed; 3 - bit about his playing career (including his relegation with C.F. Estrela da Amadora) removed EVEN with source; 3 - bit about him boasting Porto would be champions (with which you told me you agreed) removed; 4 - altogether, SEVEN references removed from storyline (and some of them used to source honours), where his successful spell at Shakhtar was also completely "iced" in favour of their UNREF'D storyline!! Was hoping to find some sort of input in the article's talkpage with their reasons explained, nothing (and did I mention also NO SUMMARIES?!)...

If you notice, the BDFUTBOL source you used to source some bio contents is still there, but now only for the birthdate and the height (additionally, I added a super reliable source for his birthplace and descent at the very start of storyline); all the refs I added are beyond doubt in terms of reliability I wager, the only doubt I have is with the one I inserted for his goal as a Newell's player (does not seem to be a blog, though).

I've gone and made some changes, mostly updating references and formatting the career stats tables. I am quite concerned about the referencing and accuracy of the club career stats table. Neither reference supports the Newell's Old Boys stats, and I did a quick check of BDFutbol and the table is missing his cup appearance in 1994/95, for instance. Certes, but the Newell's stats were never sourced in the first place, i actually did not go all the way but improved the chart with BDFUTBOL for Espanyol (and, to some extent, his France spell), no? Let me know what do you think of this one i added (i have seen it in hundreds of Argentine footballers and never removed, so i assume it's acceptable to say the least), i also added the cup apps, least of our problems as BDFUTBOL is 100% reliable (maybe i'll need your assistance after that, i'm as dumb as they come with this type of charts, and sometimes the totals are already messed up to begin with and so one is mislead).

Two doubts emerge from your last (current) version: 1 - if several competitions in America are named PRIMERA DIVISIÓN, why are we not allowed to display the full name in honours? 2 - again the language doubts: is "contract" encyclopedical while "deal" is not? (P.S. please don't work in the piece for 30 minutes or so, to avoid edit conflicts; P.S.
