Wiki Syntax

Thanks for letting me know about that problem with the maths tags - I had missed Wiml's note, and I've added a note to his talk page about this problem.

With the new lines between square brackets, that's a tricky one. A lot of the time these really are problems, and to date they could always be rewritten on one line, so they're deliberately listed as problems.

For example, these should all not work (even though the brackets are balanced, the new line means they don't work):

• [[first line

second line]]

• [[first line

|second line]]

• second line (this one displays really weirdly)

This sort of works, but not as the author probably intended:

• some-text second line

And the image example works OK. Note that the bacterium example can be rewritten as all being one line by removing all the line breaks, and it will still display the same (although I can understand why they'd prefer it on separate lines, as it's easier to read the source this way). I also live in Slovenia, but there are quite a few of us here! And there are around 30.000 Slovene immigrants living in Argentina since WWII. I also studied Italian, and just started French. Slovene is very similar to Croatian and Serbian, so yes, I can read an article in those language and write a few sentences if needed.

A question to improve our city articles

I saw that in San Jose, California users have put an info box at the bottom which features all cities of the State of California. So, I was thinking that it would be useful if we also had this for our provinces. I can't do it because I wouldn't know how to create it.
By the way, I have gathered lots of information and I'm currently drawing some graphics to come up with a comprehensive article about Lobos (both: city and Partido). I will publish it soon. Luis María Benítez 5 July 2005 23:18 (UTC)

I see what you mean. Problem is that Province articles are very thin, and we still have very few Argentine cities, and most of the are stubs, so making a Template for Province Cities for each Province that would have all Red Links in an article that its smaller than the table itself sounds a little bit unnecessary. Perhaps it would be wiser to wait for more Cities to be available. If you insist on doing them (Lets say Buenos Aires Cities and Buenos Aires Partidos) I'll give you a hand.

You have done a very good job with Lobos. I hope you will focus on other localidades or even other topics ones you're finished with Lobos. • I literally don't see want you'd want to change about this. The comma between "Zoagli" and "Italy" isn't pretty, but is required by English-langauge orthography (if you are referring to something else, I don't get it); "supposedly working his passage to Hong Kong" seems to me precisely correct: what don't you like about it? The third, you are welcome to do something about, if you see a different way to word it.

Cities?

As a native English speaker, I am not entirely happy with 'CITIES ' as the best translation for the Partidos (Refer. Greater Buenas Aires). I assume these are districts, muncipalities or other subdivisions of the Greater BA . If I am correct in my assumption then I feel it is confusing to those unfamiliar with Argentina (like myself). (I initially thought these must be population centres spread out over all of Argentina until I saw one or two that I recognised as being part of Greater BA.) I am of the opinion that while one or two of these Partidos could possibly be classified as cities, many would not. My impression of a city is a completly separate centre of population of a certain size which does not adjoin another city. Perhaps it might be better to classify these partidos in the English version of Wiki as either districts, subdivisions, municipalities or suburbs.

Cities and Partidos are very different things, of course. I'm not sure exactly why you bring this up; perhaps because usually the Partido takes the name of the biggest city in it. Examples: La Plata, La Plata Partido; Avellaneda, Avellaneda Partido.

I think its fine with Partido, I'm not sure about the literal translation, I would say Departments, as each city in the Partido has its own municipality, but for some weird reason other provinces have Departamentos instead of Partidos.

I've checked the Gran Buenos Aires article and I don't see this ambiguity. When it says "Once cities by themselves, permanent growth merged them in[...]" it means actually cities. As an example, the Gran Buenos Aires includes some of the cities in the Avellaneda Partido but ont al of them (Gerli).

From the administrative point of view, the partido is like a county in the USA. Now, in Greater Buenos Aires, this has the effect of several cities sharing their mayor and their council, because there is no administrative subdivision finer than partido. For example: San Justo and Ramos Mejia are major cities, but the municipality is called La Matanza. elpincha 23:14, 14 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Please do not remove this. Yes, there is already a note about the source of the information, but it all needs cleaning up. In addition to making a box, the {{CIA}} also causes the article to be placed in Category:CIA World Factbook cleanup. Chubut maps

Gracias Mariano. No problem about the edit-conflicts - sorry if I trod on your toes. Actually, I found it funny that we were working on the same things at the same time but I think together we have improved the Chubut pages considerably. Good idea on the map, I'll amend accordingly. User categorisation

I did not 'erase' the page, it has been moved to a category. I appreciate that the category addition instructions are still there, but all of the users who have manually listed themselves have also been tagged for categorisation appropriately. The idea is to remove an extremely large bulk of unsorted lists, to be replaced by much more-manageable categories. All countries, territories, and states are undergoing the same makeover. If you would like to help with the conversion, please do, but PLEASE don't undo things that myself and a few others have spent a long time working on. Sorry about that. I took my time to check other categories and I saw they where still using listings, so I reverted it. Listings had the advantage of letting you add comments, and sort in more than one subcategory (Administrators, etc). As far as I understand it, it goes: Provincia, Departamento, Municipio, Localidad. But most of the time 2 of them are the same thing.

Examples (In Rio Negro)

• General Roca is a Departamento, a Municipio and a Localidad.
• Localidad:El Bolson, Municipio:Bariloche, Deparmaneto:Bariloche
• Localida:Cipolletti, Municipio:Cipolleti, Departamento:General Roca
• Localidad:Ingeniero Huergo, Municipio:Mainque, Departamento:General Roca

Quilmes photo on Commons

Trademarks can be used under a fair use-licence but not under a GNU FDL as GNU FDL alows to alter the picture. But then this would be a violation of the trademark. --ALE! 21:08, 1 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Economy template

Regarding your note... By chance, unfortunately, I was just renaming it to Template:Economy of Argentina. In fact it does refer basically to the crisis, but Argentina's economy has been in one crisis or another since I was learned to say "crisis" (that would be quite a long time). :) I just went through LECOP and Patacón the other day, and added the template there two.

That said, I think renaming it is fine. But maybe there should be a Template:Economy of Argentina for general economic topics, if relevant.

I think we still have not enought information about the Economy of Argentina. (Industry, Agro, activities, history, etc), but I would like to see that, and the infobox, done! -Mariano 15:50, 1 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Province article naming

On a different issue, what's really your opinion about the province name thing? I'm asking this to you especially because you're a major contributor. As I said before, even though I also disagree with Tobias, and he has a history of conflicts because of non-consented-moves, I prefer the Buenos Aires Province. Mainly because I use it that way. It's the officinal name, it gives all the needed information in the title, and it sounds better to me He was born in the Buenos Aires Province.

Nevertheless, I agreed to set a voting on it, so I will adhere to the final result. Once we have founded consent, there is little he can do against it. But since this is an unsolved problem in Wikipedia, I doubt we will find consent on this.

at the same time he has a history of non-conflicts and of consented moves and of acceptance of moves in the other direction and of reverts that later were reverted by others in the direction he was trying to get it before. The non-consented move conflicts may be 3 or 5 but all were solved. That's nothing regarding the quantity of subnational entities worldwide. To editors that only work regional this might look much. Hi, Mariano. Im proud to know you're from Argentina, el bello cono sur, as it is nicknamed in my country, Puerto Rico. It is always a pleasure to see Latin Americans like you and I (and if you're gonna include Spain, well. Hispanics) working here and demonstrating to the world how much we can achieve.

I have never been to Argentina yet I love your country. When I grew up, my neighbors were from there, they were the purest and most wonderful people you can imagine. Later on, I became interested in aviation, boxing, and Latin American music and film and you know, Ive learned so much about your country just by reading, listening to your singers (Sandro, Serra Lima come to mind), watching film and so many other things, Im just thankful to God that Argentina has given us so much to be proud of about being Latinos as a race, like Mexico, Cuba and my country, of course. If you look at my user page, you can tell that I actually have a model of an Aerolineas Argentinas Boeing 747 I got from Buenos Aires right in front of my face.

Thats why I've dedicated articles such as Hugo Corro, Susana Gimenez, Aerolineas Argentinas, Palito Ortega, Jorge Porcel, Alberto Olmedo, Telefe, Chiquititas, Juan Roldan, Luis Firpo and so many others I can't remember to your country, so that people can learn that Argentinos, and, for that matter also, Latinos, are great achievers. I originated the pages, they may have been changed later by others, but I originated them as a way to say thank you to Argentina for your contributions to our history as a Latino race.

About the notes on the Aerolineas Argentinas article, I put them there only because the guys on timetableimages.com actually request that one does so. Entiendo tu punto de vista. What you and I need to decide to do is, where can we put the note???

About the articles regarding Leopoldo Alas y Ureña and the newspaper Clarín, I felt it was needed to direct Clarín to a disambiguation page because, even though it was only an alias, in Spain (and I believe in all Spanish-speaking countries, though I am not sure) he is known at least as much by Clarín as by Leopoldo Alas, so it could have been confusing not to insert a disambiguation page. Cordoba revisions

Thanks for the feedback on the Cordoba article, It´s all been taken on board - some of the issues are practicalities - in the school I work we don´'t have English Language spellcheckers and there is only one computer with a very slow internet connection - thus all the articles are written and edited in Word and then copied across to Wikipedia. As regards the style of the article (ie:brochureish instead of encyclopaedic) I will work on this issue next - I will also make sure that by the end of the 'project' the language and facts etc should be perfect... I will also try to work on the format - Where can I find an example of the preferred format for city articles - there seems to be some variation (having looked at BsAs, Rosario, Mendoza, Formosa, La Plata and Bariloche) - Any further comments will be welcomed, thanks --Speakers 19:11, 18 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I think this article does need cleaning up. I've done quite some after reading your message, but I'm not really into politics and lack of some knowledge to properly do it. The English was (probably still is) kinda poor, and there are lots of things that stay unexplained. Commons upload

Hola Mariano! I have a question about uploading files to Commons (as you've been doing and suggesting). I've been getting good data on Argentine trees from an old book I found but I'm not sure if I can scan the pictures and, if so, how to tag them for upload. The book is a 1975 edition by Celulosa S. A., apparently one of those free (as in gift to some) industrial publications, and it does not have even a copyright notice, or "todos los derechos reservados", nothing. The legal issue is not too well explained in the Commons site and I'm not sure where to find help there. Can you help me? --Pablo D. Flores 18:50, 23 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

That's a tough one. As a matter of fact, English Wikipedia and Commons: don't have the same policy.

Even if there's no copyright notice, you can not assume there is none. The only solution I see is that you try to contact someone at Celulosa S. A. (which might be hard 30 after years) and ask them for permission. See for instance this image is copyrighted by the Subsecretaria de Turismo de Misiones, which has released under public use by them after the request of an user.

English wikipedia allows images like this under the Fair use policy, which aplies in USA (where the servers are located).

Now, if you are going to upload them by the Fair use policy, then you cannot do it at Commons. But bear in mind the "amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole" (Amount and substantiality) section.

Finally, if you first upload it to EN:, you can always upload it to Commons: when you get the clearence. Yes, we will have the files twice, but "whatcha gonna do". -Mariano 06:33, 24 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Ley 11.723 de Propiedad intelectual. Not the best written law on Earth to be sure, but it says clearly: Para las obras fotográficas la duración del derecho de propiedad es de 20 años desde la primera publicación. The book has a "Registro de Propiedad Intelectual: en trámite" in the back, and an attribution to the photographer, only a "thank you for your collaboration". Regarding Riquelme in Argentinos only during inferiores, I think there are a few others in that situation, at least Fabricio Coloccini with San Lorenzo; he moved to Boca before debuting. -Mariano 07:09, 26 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, Fabricio did the inferiores in Boca, we was sold to AC Milan because his father threatened to invoke Patria Potestad and take him for free otherwise, and AC Milan sent him back to San Lorenzo when they didn't find space for him. ;) (Big Boca fan, as you can see) hehe

Hola Mariano! Lately I have been writing a LOT of articles that have to do with Argentina, this because I have become a SUPERFANATIC of Telefe's programming, this through their satellite network, "Telefe Internacional". What's funny, I got DirecTV to watch Televicentro Puerto Rico's shows, and I barely even watch my own country's shows, preferring Argentine ones instead..lol

Arturo Frondizi and Conicet articles feedback

Hi, I've checked you edited the articles I've been working, most notably CONICET and Arturo Frondizi. Many thanks for spending some time in reviewing these articles, it proved to be a necessary help as a I'm an inexperienced wikipedian. You mention that the article about Arturo Frondizi is biased since it focus various times on what his supporters say. Well, the article is focus to discuss the successes and the failures of Frondizi's administration. Due to a essay limitation (which is discussed in the article) the ammount of references is limited. I believe that the article is as impartial as possible, taking into account it's format previously mentioned. Of course I plan to expand it in the future to contain more sections (such as politics, etc) as well as more references. I would appreciate if you could quote which fragments you consider biased so I could rewrite them. The phrase to which apparently you make reference "His supporters claim that his presidency allowed Argentina to survive 30 more years of military and Peronista rule without a total economic collapse.", present in the introduction of the article, was previusly there (I did not write it), and I agree with you, that it's a clearly biased statement, so I removed it. Oh, and finally, there is no copyright material in the article, the essay is based on previous work by myself. If you think there is, please tell me.
