Hi guys! I'm ready and willing to adopt a new user, but there's just one problem. I can really only take on one of you two at the moment. I guess we'll decide which one of you I'll adopt by comparing our interests: I'll adopt the one of you with interests more closely related to mine, as having similar interests with the person you're adopting really makes the entire adoption process and experience of editing Wikipedia much more enjoyable. Working to help with our environmental crisis. Here's the website I created for that Transition Town Great Barrington. I'm looking forward to helping to clean up the site and controversy around Open Space Technology.
I also have a project ongoing about flat or horizontal and vertical or hierarchical structures in organizations. This is largely based on my own observations after living in intentional communities for forty years so I will need a group to work on this to get it up to Wiki standards or I might need a different forum altogether.

I'm sorry for taking so long to get back to the both of you, but I was in a car accident nearly a month ago, was seriously injured, and spent the past several weeks in the hospital recovering, so I only got home yesterday and today's been my first chance to edit. Hey there! Sorry for taking so long to get back to you, I've been away taking summer classes for the past several weeks, so I haven't been editing for a while. Anyways, the major issue with both articles is grammar, they could both use a good copyedit, which I'll get to work on straight-away. In addition, the vast majority of the information in Anne Marie Louise d'Orléans, Duchess of Montpensier is from the Sackville-West book and needs to be diversified, if at all possible. Whew! [wipes sweat off brow] I've finished copyediting Philippe. It looks quite a bit different than it did before (for example, I literally cut nearly 3,000 words out of the article, by combining sentences, cutting down on wordiness, etc.), but definitely for the better. Greetings from the Guild of Copy EditorsJuly 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive. Thanks to all who participated in the drive! Over 100 editors—including Jimbo Wales—signed up this time (nearly triple the participants of the May drive). This benefited the Guild as well as the articles in need of copy editing. You can see from the comparison graphs that we increased the number of completed copyedits substantially. Unfortunately, we were not able to meet our goal of completely wiping out 2008 from the queue. We also were not able to reduce the backlog to less than 6,000 articles. We suspect people were busy with real life summertime things, at least in the northern hemisphere! We were able to remove the months of January, February, March, April, and May from the backlog, and we almost wiped out the month of June. We reduced the backlog by 1,289 articles (17%), so all in all it was a very successful drive, and we will be holding another event soon. We'll come up with some new ideas to try to keep things fresh and interesting. Keep up the good work, everybody!

Hi Laurinavicius, I noticed that you just nominated Grand Duchy of Tuscany as a good article. Looking at the article, I noticed some significant factual errors in the discussion of the period of the Grand Duchy's history which I am most familiar with, which is its end - I tried to explain what was wrong and give some sources that explain what happened in more detail. john k (talk) 18:17, 17 August 2010 (UTC)
Hi John, thank you very much for bringing this to my attention. As I'm not much of an expert on historical Italian states, I unfortunately did not notice these inaccuracies. Anyways, the incorrect information comes from two sources, Catholic Encyclopedia's entry on "Tuscany" and Encyclopædia Britannica's entry on "Leopold II (grand duke of Tuscany)". The combined five citations from these two sources were added in either September or October of last year by Jack1755, who heavily edited the article from May through October of last year. The section dealing with the end of the Grand Duchy, entitled "Tuscany restored and its final demise", prior to all of Jack's edits to the article reads:
"With the fall of the Napoleonic system in 1814, Ferdinand was restored to the Grand Duchy, ruling until his death in 1824. Italian Nationalism had exploded in the post-Napoleonic years, leading to secret societies hell-bent on a unified Italy. Many rebellions ensued, such as the Revolutions of 1848 in the Italian states, and several more minor ones preceding. Ferdinand's son, Leopold II of Tuscany, ruled until April 1859, when he was driven out by a revolution following the defeat of the Austrians by the French and Sardinian forces in the Austro-Sardinian War. Napoleon III had supported Sardinia in this war partly because assassination attempts had been made on his life by Italian nationalists.
"In July, Leopold, in exile in Vienna, abdicated in favour of his son, Ferdinand IV, who never reigned. Tuscany was under Sardinian administration and Ferdinand was formally deposed by the de facto government on 16 August. In December 1859, the Grand Duchy officially ceased to exist, being joined to the Duchies of Modena and Parma to form the United Provinces of Central Italy, which was annexed by the Kingdom of Sardinia a few months later, in March 1860, Italy was unified in 1870, when the remains of the Papal States were annexed in that September, deposing Pope Pius IX"
That's a bit better in some ways - it doesn't imply Leopold II returned in order to abdicate, for one thing. It still has a few problems, though - 1) it doesn't discuss Leopold's interactions with the revolution in 1848-9, which is of key importance, I think, in terms of destroying elites' loyalty to the dynasty; 2) as I said above, Leopold was driven out by a revolution which occurred before the Austrians had begun the war, much less been defeated in it (the chronology is explained reasonably well in the 1911 Britannica article on Leopold); 3) I'm not sure the relevance of assassination attempts against Napoleon III to this article, which ought to be about giving an overview of the history of the grand duchy, not the process of Italian unification as a whole; 4) I'm not sure exactly where Leopold was when he abdicated; he might have been in Vienna, but I'd have thought he was probably still in Venetia (the precise date of his abdication was July 21); 5) Tuscany was not under Sardinian administration after the end of the war on July 11, but under the control of a provisional government of Tuscans, led by the Tuscan nobleman Bettino Ricasoli; the Sardinians had some influence with this provisional government, but did not formally return until after the annexations were voted on in March 1860. I'd like to just write out replacement text myself, but right now I don't really have time to look up all the citations that would be needed and do it right. The Catholic Encyclopedia, though, has some clearly incorrect statements, from which Jack1755 seems to have innocently made even more incorrect inferences; the 1911 Britannica article on Leopold II is probably the best general reference source on the subject. The key dates are: April 27, 1859 - bloodless revolution in Florence expels Leopold II; April 29, 1859 - war begins between Austria and Sardinia; the new government in Florence now invites in the Sardinians; July 11, 1859 - preliminary peace of Villafranca ends the war, Habsburgs to be restored in Florence, Sardinian protectorate comes to a formal end; July 21, 1859 - Leopold II abdicated in favor of his son Ferdinand IV; August 16, 1859 - assembly elected under auspices of provisional government proclaims deposition of the Habsburgs; March 22, 1860 - Sardinia annexes Tuscany due to results of plebiscite conducted by the provisional government earlier that month. The 1911 Britannica article, combined with the sources I mention on the talk page, ought to corroborate that and flesh it out. john k (talk) 22:30, 17 August 2010 (UTC)

As far as I know of, there aren't any templates for that purpose, so you should just leave a message on your IP's user page letting other editors know that that's your IP and that you may accidentally edit with it if you get logged out and didn't notice. Regarding archiving my talk page, I know that I really should and I honestly don't know why I haven't done so yet, but I've never really had a problem with it being hard to navigate or slow to load. Hi Laur. I've noticed a few of the users you welcome are a bit questionable. For example, what really struck me was the fact you welcomed a user (with a regular welcome) who was blatantly vandalizing a few days ago and was later blocked for being a vandalism only account. You also welcomed a user who has a questionable username. While it is essential to not bite and assume good faith, using reasoning is more important. This isn't a negative message, this is just peculiar. There is a vandal welcome and other messages regarding questionable usernames as well as a plethora of other welcomes if you install Friendly in your preferences. Participation report — We have 71 participants in the September drive. 95 people signed up for the July drive, and in May we had 36.
Progress report — We have been making solid progress in eliminating the 2008 articles from the backlog so far. If we continue to focus our firepower we can completely wipe out 2008 from the queue. Overall volumes are lower than expected though, with nearly a thousand articles yet to be done if we are to meet our overall target. If you have not yet participated in the drive, we recommend you do so. If each person who signed up edits one article per day from now till the end of the month we can eliminate another 1,065 articles from the backlog. All contributions are appreciated.
Announcement: credit for 10k+ articles — Participants editing a 10k word article may claim credit for two 5k+ articles on the leaderboard. Those that edit a 15k word article may claim credit for three. Regardless, the article is still counted as a single article in the tallies.
Reminder — Articles from the Requests page can be included in your tally, even if they do not have a copy edit tag. This is a great place to go if you are interested in finding a higher quality article to work on.

September 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive Conclusion

Greetings from the Guild of Copy EditorsSeptember 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive. Thanks to all who participated! Several of our top editors were called away to real life concerns during the month (be careful out there, people!). This meant that once again, we did not meet all our lofty targets, but we did come close.
Stats
Out of 76 registered editors, 45 actively participated.
We nearly wiped out the 2008 articles from the backlog—there were only 13 remaining when the drive closed.
We reduced the backlog by 725 articles (11.5%), so it was another successful drive.
A total of 59 barnstars will be awarded to 40 editors—well done, and congratulations to all.

Hi there Laurinavicius! You may be wondering, what have I done to sound the alarm this time? Nothing. I'm messaging you in regards to the adopt-a-user program, which currently has a backlog of users wishing to be adopted. This doesn't make much sense, as we have a considerable list of users offer adoption, so there shouldn't be any backlog. I've begun to eliminate this backlog myself through a matching program, but I need your help to make it work. Of course, adoptees and adopters don't have to go through there, but I believe it helps eliminate the backlog because someone is actively matching pairs.
On the list of adopters, I have modified the middle column to say "Interests." It's easier working with other users that have similar interests, so if it's not too much to ask, could you add your interests in the middle column? For example, if I was interested in hurricanes, computers, business, and ... reptiles? I would place those in the middle column. Counter-vandalism and the like can also be included (maintenance should be used as the general term). The more interests, the better, since adoptees can learn more about you and choose the one they feel most comfortable working with. The information about when you're most active and other stuff can go into the "Notes" section to the right.
Finally, I've gone around and asked adoptees (and will in the future) to fill in a short survey so adopters can take the initiative and contact users they feel comfortable working with. We all know that most adoptees just place the adopt me template on their user page and leave it - so it's up to us to approach them and offer adoption. So, please take a look at the survey, adopt those that fit your interests, and maybe watchlist it so you can see the interests of adoptees and adopt one that fits your interests in the future.

Participation report — The November drive has 53 participants at this point. We had 77 participants in the September drive. In July, 95 people signed up for the drive, and in May we had 36. If you are not participating, it is not too late to join!
Progress report — The drive is quite successful so far, as we have already almost reached our target of a 10% reduction in the number of articles in the backlog. We are doing very well at keeping our Requests page clear, as those articles count double for word count for this drive.
Please keep in mind the possibility of removing other tags when you are finished with an article. If the article no longer needs {{cleanup}}, {{wikify}}, or other similar maintenance tags, please remove them, as this will make the tasks of other WikiProjects easier to complete. November 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive Conclusion
We have reached the end of our fourth backlog elimination drive. Thanks to all who participated.

58 people signed up for this drive. Of these, 48 people participated in the drive.
Although we did not eliminate the months we planned to (January, February, and March 2009; and August, September, and October 2010), we did reduce the backlog by 627 articles (11.2%), which was over our goal of 10%.
If you copy edited at least 4,000 words, you qualify for a barnstar. If you participated in the September 2010 backlog elimination drive, you may have earned roll-over words (more details can be found here). These roll-over words count as credit towards earning barnstars, except for leaderboard awards. We will be delivering these barnstars within the next couple of weeks.
A particular highlight for the wiki crowd will be 'Seductive Subversion: Women Pop Artists, 1958–1968', and the accompanying "WikiPop" project, with specially-created Wikipedia articles on the artists displayed on iPads in the gallery.
This will be a museum touring and partying meetup, so no excuses about being a shy newbie this time. Bring a friend too!
