WikiCup 2024 July newsletter

The third round of the 2024 WikiCup ended on 28 June. As with Round 2, this round was competitive: each of the 16 contestants who advanced to Round 4 scored at least 256 points.

WikiCup 2024 August newsletter

More importantly, the subject clearly meets our general notability guidelines, with sources dating back to the 1980s. I urge you not to nominate this for deletion on a whim. Having skimmed through the previous AfD, it seems that the sourcing then was indeed poor. I certainly did not consult or cite those sources. On the other hand there is plenty of substantive and reliable coverage in local newspapers as Today, the Straits Times, and the New Paper. WikiCup 2024 November newsletter

The 2024 WikiCup has come to an end, with the final round being a very tight race. Our new champion is AirshipJungleman29 (submissions), who scored 2,283 points mainly through 3 high-multiplier FAs and 3 GAs on military history topics. By a 1% margin, Airship beat out last year's champion, Delaware BeanieFan11 (submissions), who scored second with 2,264 points, mainly from an impressive 58 GAs about athletes. In third place, Generalissima (submissions) scored 1,528 points, primarily from two FAs on U.S. Librarians of Congress and 20 GAs about various historical topics. Our other finalists are: Sammi Brie (submissions) with 879 points, Canada Hey man im josh (submissions) with 533 points, BennyOnTheLoose (submissions) with 432 points, Arconning (submissions) with 244 points, and Christmas Island AryKun (submissions) with 15 points. Congratulations to our finalists and all who participated!

The final round was very productive, and contestants had 7 FAs, 9 FLs, 94 GAs, 73 FAC reviews, and 79 GAN reviews and peer reviews. Altogether, Wikipedia has benefited greatly from the activities of WikiCup competitors all through the contest. Well done everyone!

All those who reached the final will receive awards and the following special awards will be made, based on high performance in particular areas of content creation. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, these prizes are awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round, or in the event of a tie, to the overall leader in this field.

Next year's competition will begin on 1 January. You are invited to sign up to participate; the WikiCup is open to all Wikipedians, both novices and experienced editors, and we hope to see you all in the 2025 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners, and thank all participants for their involvement!

Jeffro77 It would be like insisting that "Day of Atonement" be retitled to "Day of atonement". I'm sure it would be appropriate for JWs to also refer to it in the lower case, since the Memorial is also a memorial, but then it wouldn't be in reference to its proper name and moreso a description of what the celebration is. We'd be better off with "Jehovah's Witnesses' annual commemoration of Jesus' death" as a title then.   • The Watchtower, April 2021, p. 19: "And each year we deepen our gratitude for the ransom by attending the Memorial of Jesus’ death and by zealously inviting others to join us."
  • The Watchtower, September 2020 p. 10: "That evening, a crowd of 20,919,041 gathered to observe the Memorial of Jesus’ death."
  • The Watchtower, January 2019, p. 27: "On the night of the Memorial of Jesus’ death, we attend this important event not merely because we feel it is a duty..."
  • The Watchtower, January 2019, p. 27: "Each year, we make an effort to invite as many as possible to attend the Memorial of Jesus’ death."
  • New World Translation (Glossary) p. 1703: "Lord’s Evening Meal. A literal meal consisting of unleavened bread and wine as symbols of Christ’s body and blood; a memorial of Jesus’ death."
These references are sufficient to establish that they do not use the term as a title. Note in each case that they use Memorial as a title but not the rest. However, they do use "Lord's Evening Meal" as a title:
  • The Watchtower, September 2024, p. 19: "It is thus understandable that Jesus wanted to have them with him for that final Passover and for what immediately followed—the Lord’s Evening Meal."
  • The Watchtower, December 2024, p. 11: "During the Lord’s Evening Meal, Jesus offered unleavened bread to his apostles and told them that it represented his body."
Their Bible encyclopedia, Insight on the Scriptures, has an entry for "Memorial" which simply says "See LORD'S EVENING MEAL", where the subject is discussed in detail. There is no entry for "Memorial of Jesus' death" at all.

1) Are there any non-JW related articles here that have sentence case titles for festival names? I'm hard-pressed to think of any. It could just be a quirk on the JW style guide's part. If you want to be precise about it, the solution is to rename the article to the name they do use as an actual title for the observance, "Lord's Evening Meal". It'd be rather odd for "Memorial" to be the only official title (apart from LEM), as opposed to a shortening of the full title "Memorial of Jesus' Death", which for whatever stylistic/religious(??) reasons is rendered in official JW literature as MoJd... I'd be more persuaded to change if there were non-JW precedents here, i.e. find me an article about any festival that has such a strange titling convention. Whether you think it’s odd isn’t particularly relevant. I have directly shown that the official terms as used in their Bible encyclopaedia are “Lord’s Evening Meal” (the preferred term) or “Memorial”. I have also shown that they capitalise “Lord’s Evening Meal” but do not capitalise ‘death’ as part of a name at all. Since they don’t use “Memorial of Jesus’ death” as a title of the ritual, suggesting it as a ‘precedent’ is an irrelevant distraction. That's not immediately clear to me, otherwise they'd have taken pains to stress in their website (linked above, no mention of Lord's Evening Meal on that page by the way) that only Memorial is acceptable as a "title". I don't think it's just me who would find this proposed change odd. I have also directly shown the Chryssides citation, and there are many other news articles that report the name per the standard convention. Re: your rollback, 2 seconds of googling would have revealed that Hooi is, indeed, widely credited with creating the yam ring. @Jpatokal: Sorry for not sparing those two precious seconds but the onus should be on the editor introducing the claim to substantiate it with a reliable source. Dr Tay may be a renowned food critic but his blog should not be used to support the claim that so and so invented a certain dish. In any case, as I pointed out in my edit summary, that is not quite what the blog says! And contrary to what you may think, it would not be acceptable to cite that claim with his book either. @Jpatokal: The point is, you shouldn't back up claims that may or may not be actually true with subpar sources and expect your edits not to be reverted (or for someone else to automatically come along and provide a better source for you...) If you want to do something, do it properly and not lackadaisically. You might think this incident/conversation is frivolous, but such edits add up and undermine the credibility of WP over time. @Jpatokal: I am confident that I violated no editing policies whatsoever. The record clearly shows that I took great pains to classify the edit as "good faith" (the fact that such an option exists implies that not only blatant vandalism deserves to be reverted...) and I gave a legitimate edit summary explaining why. You have already indirectly conceded that the initial source (provided by you) was inadequate, and that I was the one who eventually fixed the issue. It seems to me that you're just annoyed to be called out over a seemingly trivial issue like this, so you're doubling down and being extra argumentative.
