Strange Portrait

One has to wonder Oiyarbepsy. I have to track down a couple of articles that I read on this. There's more to the missing film saga than meets the eye. There are 3 versions of what happened to the film. one is that it was accidentally destroyed in a fire, the other the HK govt destroyed it and the other I saw in one of the two articles. If it's truer that Terry Bourke was searching for a print of the film for years, then he must have genuinely believed that a print was made from the negative. Gary Havoc & The Hurricanes

Hi. So, I've had a look at the Gary Havoc & The Hurricanes and the discussion about its deletion and you've a bit of a challenge on your hands here! The issue proving the notability of Gary Havoc & The Hurricanes. Criteria for bands is fairly comprehensive. If you haven't seen it already, take a look at the notability criteria for bands: WP:NBAND. From what I can see, Gary Havoc & The Hurricanes does not meet the criteria for points 2 to 12. For point one (press coverage), I'm struggling to find any of the references in the article that would not be classed as "trivial". E.g., the Audio Culture article mentioning that the band once played at the Windsor Castle ) is not substantial enough. It's not just enough for the band's name to briefly appear in an article about another subject - the article needs to be about the band itself.

A few years ago I successfully saved from deletion a page about a punk band (with a weird name that apparently sounded fake!). I added two details which saved the page. The band had a song on the soundtrack of a film which was also included on the soundtrack album, and another of the band's songs had been featured in a Radio New Zealand documentary on the subject of the song, which included a brief interview with the songwriter. It's worth nothing that this band's page is still not especially long and does not have an extensive biography.

So this is the sort of thing you'll need to do. Prove that this band was notable enough to justify having its own Wikipedia page. Basically: who is this band, why are they notable, and prove it.

Use of Discogs as a source

Hello. I noticed that you've been using the Discogs site as a source for the years of release of various albums. Please be advised that Discogs is generally not considered a reliable source, due to its status as a user-generated site. Although I will not be the one to revert your references, someone else might. Also, so long as you can verify that the year of publication was indicated on either the label or cover of the album, it seems to me that sourcing the year is unnecessary, because it is already being sourced via the record label and catalog number. Two things

Hi Karl, I want to point two things out to you:

  1. We try to avoid duplicate categories. When you created and populated Category:Ceramic artists, Category:American ceramic artists, and Category:American Ceramic artists, you may not have realized that the categories Category:Ceramists and Category:American ceramists already existed. I've depopulated and redirected your categories to those, with {{cat redirect}}. It's an understandable mistake, but next time, please try to do a thorough search of the existing categories, to make sure that the category you want to create doesn't already exist with a different name.
  2. I notice a lot of "disambiguation link notification" messages on your talk page. When you leave links to dab pages, other editors have to fix them to point to the intended target; otherwise, readers are not directed to the page they want to go to. The best way to avoid this is to check the links you are adding—do they point where you expected them to point?—in preview, before you hit save. Album article formatting

Please see WP:MOSALBUM. The article you created, Blues Got Soul, has several formatting issues that do not adhere to the guidelines put in place. "Track listing" and Personnel do not get inserted as sub-headers. They are a main part of the article. Putting them under "Album details" is unnecessary. Please see an article that was deemed a "good article" by wiki standards, Ramones (album), or an example.

also "He never got to see it's release" should be "He never got to see its release" --- "It's" is a contraction, meaning "it is" --- "its" is the proper usage here indicating ownership.

RE: Personnel formatting: see here that it is supposed to be formatted "Name – role". Not "Name: role".

Personnel table

Hi again. Please see WP:MOSALBUM, the "Personnel" section. I believe that the table is wholly unnecessary, and also any kind of "Companies" section is also unnecessary. Please adhere to the guidelines. Nobody really puts their personnel into tables unless it has a special reason. I see none that should exist for No Escape (album)

In addition, it is not good manners to pull the carpet out from under another editor's feet whilst they are working. I would not even envisage doing such a thing when they were signed off. I would consult them first of suggest a re-direct. I have never done this to another editor as I would consider it highly disrespectful. I have never had this done to me in the past either. Your article does not explain how the film is significant or distinguishable from the tens of films Leo or Len have made. It doesn't even say what country it was made or released. I'm sorry but you have made a mess out of the page and it appears the history may be misleading. Apologies if I'm wrong about the history but it does not indicate my creation correctly. However you have tangled a few things up. Look, if the article is eventually found to non-notable ( I believe it is notable) then we can redirect it to Leo Fong's page, film section. I know that the film has appeared in a magazine and I may get hold of it.

The cast listing follows the format listed in MOS:FILMCAST where it focuses on credited actors listed in either opening or closing title cards. It should not be in a table. You are going to have to be able to accept instruction if you are going to be a Wikipedia editor. Any time you violate a Wikipedia policy it will not be unusual for you to receive a friendly reminder. My message to you was respectful and helpful. I appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, as I do any editor. We are all working for free to make Wikipedia the best source for information as we can. Another observation that I made when coming to your Talk page is that you are creating an awful lot of articles that are recommended for deletion. I appreciate that such a thing happens when an editor creates a lot of articles, but it also creates an incredible workload for other editors and administrators.     I have to agree with @MarydaleEd, you need to relax on creating pages.
    You rebutal is This is misleading. Out of the recommended for deletion, 24 were not deleted. Some were changed to redirect. Out of the ones that were deleted, 18 of them, some have been re-created and 2 or 3 were never mine. Maybe but still not a good look.
    Three non-notable pages you created are include Kimberley Casey (producer), Sean Holton (I don't see the point of creating a page just to be a re-direct), and White Fury.
    All the sources there are not reliable for notability, I mean it's not because you are in TCM that you deserve a page. There needs to be a certain level of article on the subject. The only director from Action International Pictures that is currently worthy of a Wiki page is David A. Prior. There is a ton of article dedicated to him, currently there is nothing on Casey.
    I have no idea what Casey and Holton are doing now, but do they still want to be associated with these films. Ask yourself this question, does this person benefits from a Wiki page?

      As for the sourcing: just because "a lot of editors still do" something is not a reason to continue to do it. That response is a variation of the "we've always done it that way" defense, a defense which has been universally and resolutely panned as a reason to continue doing anything. Typing this message using a typewriter was, at one point, "the way we always did it," but we evolved. There is a better method now. Please use it.
      As for your many articles that have been recommended for deletion: in your defense, you actually make my point. Any time an editor has to turn his or her attention to your problematic articles is time and energy that could be better used to edit substantial and meaningful articles whose appropriateness is not in question. Every time an article is recommended for deletion, editors must research those articles, investigate any sources in the articles and make a decision whether to delete the article or not. Often, if not usually, Talk topics must be created to gain consensuses. Whether your articles are ultimately deleted is irrelevant.
      The fact that you have so many articles that have been questionable enough to have be recommended for deletion is an indication that perhaps you need to be more thorough in creating the articles. All of these recommendations for deletions surely have common threads among them. I am asking you only to learn from those deletion recommendations and don't repeat the same mistakes. I am concerned regarding your restoration of where the original I Can Feel It pointed and your creation of the Kane Brown song of the same name at I Can Feel It (Kane Brown song) that you're not aware of our guidelines on article titles per WP:NCMDAB. We do not disambiguate article titles for topics that don't have articles on them. By all means, if the song written by Allandale is notable, make an article on it. Until and unless that song has an article, it can be referred to with a hatnote (as I've done) on the article for Brown's song at I Can Feel It. Per our article title guidelines, that is where the Brown song should be located. It should not be unnecessarily disambiguated for topics that don't have articles. Thanks. Hi, I disagree with your move that you made on "I Can Feel It". The redirection I made was made ages before the article for the Kane Brown song was even a thought. Someone came in and changed the redirection within a week ago. There was still no article for the Kane Brown song. I noticed that user:Lk95? or someone else had created a redirection (I Can Feel It (Kane Brown song) ). Both my creation and the I Can Feel It (Kane Brown song) existed before the person removed the redirect. And I fixed things and added content. What's happened is that you've changed the history I think. BTW: The Chuck Bennett "I Can Feel It" was a hit in Germany in 1970. I was going to add content once I could find the actual chart stats. Hello, I've moved your message here to keep the discussion in one place instead of split in two. I didn't "change the history". I moved what was at I Can Feel It (Kane Brown song) to I Can Feel It, and did a round-robin move to move what was at I Can Feel It to I Can Feel It (Eric Allandale song). Again, this is per naming guidelines. You can disagree with it, but this is a guideline—WP:NCMDAB. It says if we do not have an article for a topic of the same name, the topic of that name that does have an article (in this case, the Kane Brown song) should be moved to the most basic page title available, and any other pages about topics of the same name can be put in a hatnote. Any discussion on the matter where other editors' opinions are sought would say the same, hence why it's a guideline as it's standard practice. As I said, if you think the song written by Allandale is notable (as in, the recorded versions of the song charted and got coverage in news sources or reviewed by critics) then by all means make an article on that too. Hi again, OK I'll be a bit more clear about what happened. I am the one who first created the re-direction I Can Feel It. At the time when I did create it, there was no article for "I Can Feel It". (Note: when you moved the page you deleted my name off as the creator! so now the history has been incorrectly altered.) OK, let's get back to the story. Someone came in and deleted / overwrote the content #redirect Eric Allandale#Songwriting and production and put on #redirect Kane Brown instead and added some categories etc.. Also this person didn't take into account that there were some articles that were linking to the redirection. When this happened there was no article for Kane Brown, so I put the page back to where it should be. I was the one who created the "I Can Feel It" redirect. I noticed that there was a redirection already, I Can Feel It (Kane Brown song). That was created in Sept or Oct, but now that history has been altered. That redirection should have been used for the content to make the article, Not the one I created! Also, what wasn't taken into account is that there were some pages that linked to the I Can Feel It redirect. They were left hanging. Anyway, so as a favor to the keen (possible) fan, and to make use of the redirect, I kick started the article and added content. So that's where things should have been left!

I don't intentionally swipe redirects to point to somewhere else or fill with content to make an article. I try to respect the work of others. OK, I'll pull a hypothetical example out of a hat. If I wanted to create an article for a song or film, EG: "Coming into the Thick of It" and I saw that someone had already created a redirection #redirect Coming Into the Thick of It and it just went to a page where it was an album track, I would never grab it for my own use. I would consider the original creator's efforts and also the fact that they were first. I would then create an article Coming Into the Thick of It (John Doe song) or similar for the film.

As it was when I created redirect for I Can Feel It, I redirected it to the Eric Allandale page and I was going to in the future, create an article for it because a singer had a hit with it in Germany in 1970. So when the redirect was first changed, the Eric Allandale redirection had more value than the Kane Brown redirection. And who knows, had I not kickstarted the article when I did, there may not even have been an article for that Kane Brown song even today!

I'm not after any kind of recognition or accolades, I just believe that things should be done fairly and edit history should be accurate! Karl, please read WP:NCMDAB. I'm still not sure you have. That's why I linked it and titled this section that. You can have your own personal philosophy on where you would create an article for "John Doe"'s song, but as you know, we are on Wikipedia and Wikipedia has guidelines that state that an article should be moved to the most basic namespace possible if nothing else of that name has an article. I already explained this. To go with your example, since that Coming Into the Thick of It (John Doe song) page that you theoretically created would be the only article titled "Coming Into the Thick of It", per WP:NCMDAB and Wikipedia's disambiguation guidelines, it should be moved to Coming Into the Thick of It. This is not about being "fair" to who started redirects—that's not a concern we should take into account. It's per our guidelines. I followed our guidelines when I moved the article you started at I Can Feel It (Kane Brown song) to I Can Feel It and moved the redirect you started at I Can Feel It to I Can Feel It (Eric Allandale song) in order to have what was at the time the only article on anything titled "I Can Feel It" on Wikipedia at the most basic name. We do not disambiguate for the mere existence of redirects in most cases.
I'm also really not sure you understand how moves work (WP:Moving articles) nor how this particular page move worked. I'm concerned that you've been here since 2014 and are talking about "alterations" of page histories when yes, moving involves "altering" where things are located, but I did not delete anything here. I did not "delete" your name "off an article" here, Karl. The redirect you created and that was altered by David829 to repoint to Kane Brown, which you repointed back to Eric Allandale, literally still exists here. Your name is still there in the edit history first, its location has merely been moved. My move did not delete it or improperly "alter" anything other than what NCMDAB tells editors to do.
Now, finally, what I came here for: I notice you have since made I Can Feel It (Jo Armstead song), which has resulted in the Kane Brown song being moved back to I Can Feel It (Kane Brown song) per WP:NCMDAB. But, also per WP:NCMDAB: "Use the name of the performer who first performed the song". We don't disambiguate by the writer for modern "popular" songs, so I've moved the article you made to I Can Feel It (Carl Carlton song). I also notice you still have not made an article for the song written by Eric Allandale that started all of this. I have merged Johnny Burch Octet to Johnny Burch

The bar for a jazz ensemble with a clear leader to have its own article is very very high, and was not met for this article. The sourcing mostly consisted of quotes and autobiographical references from the band members themselves, newspaper sources about unremarikable dates the band played, which isn't the kind of detail that should be included in articles. If you are dissatisfied with this action, I would suggest that, instead of recreating the article, you try to add relevant information to Johnny Burch and only re-split the information if that information takes up too high of a proportion. Mike Collier

Hi, While reading the Wikipedia article about Polly Brown, I noticed that it included a link to a new page on Mike Collier, and I see it is you who has done most of the work on it so far. I make a lot of small edits to Wikipedia but I don’t have the time or motivation to research and write articles, so I was pleased to see that there is now a page about him, because I think he was a figure of some significance in the music business.

I myself knew Mike Collier in the 1980s and he would often tell all sorts of stories about his past. I was fascinated by these stories and in recent years always thought that there was more than enough there for a page, but as with so many things the difficulty is finding sources.

I met Collier in 1981, and in that year, as part of the band State of Grace, released the final single on Flamingo. Shortly after, Collier was fired from Peterman and Co. (the US parent company downsized or reorganised the UK division of Carlin Music, of which Peterman and Co. was part), and he then founded his own recording company, Joy Records, and publishing company, Jess Music. Again as part of State of Grace I signed publishing and recording contracts with him, and he in turn financed the recording of three further singles by my band, all of which were licensed to PRT for UK release, and to many other labels internationally. This was between 1982 and 1984.

Around 1990, Collier was working as a consultant for the publishing company Music Sales. That was the last time I had any contact with him.

I later learned that he released a series of records to cash in on or exploit the line dancing craze of the late 1990s.

He died in 2004. That information I gleaned from an obituary published by Billboard magazine. I found the article online some years ago, but I don’t know if it’s still available. I seem to remember that the obituary said he was aged 70 at the time.

As you say, he was very prominent in the UK and US disco scene of the mid to late 1970s. He said to me that he was nicknamed "Grandpa Disco" at that time.

Big hits he had a connection to as publisher in the early 1980s included "Move Closer" by Phyllis Nelson, and "Saddle Up" by David Christie. I believe he also may have been the UK publisher of "Do It to the Music" (1981) by Raw Silk, because he gave me a copy of the record at that time.

Earlier, in the 1960s, he was involved in the career of a band called the Downliners Sect in the UK. And a little later, I believe he had some involvement in the career of the band Osibisa.

As you say, he was working in the music business in the US as early as the late 1950s. Exactly what his connection was to the Isley Brothers’ "Shout" I’m not clear. He asserted to me that he produced it. Maybe he was just the A&R man and therefore the "producer" in that sense, perhaps collaborating on the creative side with the studio people, but not credited on the label as such. @Dubmill:. Hi, thanks for the info about Mike Collier. Wow, you were privileged to have known him in the 1980s. I think I had only vague knowledge of him him when I started out and created the page. But when I got into the research, it soon became apparent to me that there was a whole lot to the guy. He seems a bit like the Morgan Freeman "How can he be in that many films" thing, in that you have to wonder how one man can do so much work. He must have been passionate about his work. That's for sure! I can see him being called "Grandpa Disco". I've listened to a few of the disco recordings he was associated with and they're great!
I will revisit his page in the near future and get some more things added to it. He certainly appears to have been a unique individual.
Thanks for the info about his death. I've found it here on Billboard September 4, 2004, page 43 in the NEWSLINE section. I'll update the page.

@Mach61: I'd never heard of Swete before seeing this notice, but the prod appears solely based on the quality of sources rather than notability. Someone who had top ten hits in Argentina in the 1960s will almost certainly have coverage in Argentine newspapers of the era, and possibly in Spanish-language books. I don't speak Spanish, so I'm not in a position to dig for sources (although I used WP:LIBRARY to look in NewspaperArchive, which only goes to 1928 in Argentina, and the Oxford Dictionary of Music, without success). Also again for national top twenty album. Also has released two or more albums on a major record label or on one of the more important indie labels. So that's WP singer 2 and 5.
