Hi James. I have finished the translation of Jöran Persson, hope you enjoy it. It is a little less critical of him than the Swedish article is; I have tried to highlight the fact that, despite being involved in a large number of deaths, it is not known how much autonomy he had at various points in his career. Homeschooling project

Hello, My name Master Scott Hall (you can call me Scott). I am relatively new contributing to Wikipedia, though I have been a user of it for some time. I am currently soliciting for interest in a Wikiproject that I have proposed on the subject of homeschooling. Before finding Wikipedia, my wife and I were seriously considering, but not quite convinced, to home educate our children.

After discovering the depth, scope, and long-term goals of Wikipedia, as well as the individuals driving it, I am convinced that WP has the potential to revolutionize homeschooling. I am also convinced that home education is the right choice for my family. I have, however, been somewhat discouraged by the oversight of home education in most of the education related projects on WP. There are many potential reasons for this discrepency, but I have resolved to try to do something about it.

Although I personally have very limited experience in building complex Wikiprojects, -templates, -portals, etc., I am confident that the right team can be assembled to tackle these issues. Update: The proposed project on Homeschooling was met with a very positive response. As a result, the project has been ugraded to an official WikiProject and can be found at WikiProject Alternative education. We have several experienced Wikipedians on board, as well as some new faces. We still need contributors with backgrounds in education, education theory and philosophy, and specific alternative education methods, such as homeschooling, charter schools, and E-learning from both teacher and student perspectives. Larrys Creek, Pennsylvania

Could you (or anyone else who reads this) please take a look at Larrys Creek, Pennsylvania and tell me what you think? I am sorry to bug you, but you are still the only person (besides -Ril-, and I don't want to deal with him) who has used my talk page.

Anyway, except for adding a picture of the creek , I think it is a pretty complete article, but I would appreciate any feedback on how to make it a better article. (I plan to add a picture, probably one of the covered bridge on it, just need to get there and take it and add it).

I plan to (eventually) make articles for all the major watersheds in Lycoming County, PA and perhaps all those along the Susuquehanna River, so this is a model of sorts for those (I have been working on two other creeks but they are not as far along and are longer/bigger creeks and so more work).

• Thanks for the quick, thorough and insightful feedback. I think I know a way to flesh out the introduction to the article, a sort of summary contrast between the current rural state (Game Lands, fishing, low population) of the creek and its more industrial situation in the 19th Century. I can also put some geographic references in the opening related to Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and Harrisburg (and make this a standard sentence for all Lycoming County articles).

As for the map, I have also worried about it being too busy colorwise. I want it to be one map for all major watersheds in Lycoming County, so I think I may make each watershed all the same color and just number the tributaries. I might also see if I can fit in an inset of the county locator map so it is more obvious where this is in relation to PA.

Moved page and request for comment

Hello. I recently moved the page "List of American poets" to List of poets from the United States to avoid the US-centric idea that "US" and "America" are synonymous. I am a US citizen, so this is a disinterested move, rather than a judgmental one. I just thought you might want to link to the current page on your user page rather than to a redir page (which may be deleted eventually, as having a redir from there still reflects the same idea, though less forcefully).

On a completely different topic, as you have been a member of the ArbCom and are an admin and bureaucrat here (though perhaps it is more of a MedCom-type issue), I would be interested in your thoughts (preferably on my talk page here or there) regarding some issues I'm having on Simple English Wikipedia with an admin and bureaucrat there, Netoholic. He/she is also an active editor here. The user has invented policies which he/she applies to SEWikipedia (changing policy pages, etc. to reflect those policies) and will not allow anyone to go against them or make changes which include other ideas as alternatives or even put "disputed policy" templates on those pages. To me, it seems like POV-pushing, but on the policy level. There are two basic issues: what to do with "non-core" articles, as we call them there, and what to do with Simple English Wiktionary. I will try to summarize them in as few words as possible.

1. Netoholic feels that SEWikipedia editors should only work on core articles, and that non-core articles should be deleted. While I and other editors are not against encouraging work on core articles, we feel that this should not be a requirement and that non-core articles should not be deleted.
2. Netoholic feels that short descriptions (definitions) of words should be included as separate articles in Simple English Wikipedia (in the face of Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not, which he has modified to suit his purposes), despite the fact that Simple English Wiktionary both exists and is somewhat active. He also feels that the editors at SEWikipedia should not link to SEWiktionary, but instead should link to English Wiktionary (despite the fact that simple users may find the definitions there too difficult to be useful, while SEWiktionary is made for them). I and the users that have stated a non-neutral opinion (many are silent on this) feel that all of those descriptions should be moved to SEWiktionary, and that we should link to SEWiktionary whether or not we link to English Wiktionary.

Netoholic is not interested in what consensus says, because he/she has never asked for anyone's thoughts, but only pushed his/her own view as policy. This user has his/her own view of what "consensus" means, as can be seen by the RfD actions in opposition to what appears to be consensus. If you like, I can give you a list of the pages where we have had the most pertinent discussions, and I've even written a very long document (something like six pages in Word) which details the history of the issue, if you really want some in-depth description. Of course, all of this (except my history document) is visible on SEWikipedia, if you want to do your own research.

I didn't realize it, but checking his/her user page here on English Wikipedia shows that Netoholic has had some of the same problems here with ignoring consensus and even required mediation. I think the majority of his/her edits are valid ones, but the attitude gets old fast. --Cromwellt|Talk 01:36, 16 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I note that you have not yet linked your user page to the new location, though you seem to agree that it was a good move. I'm not sure how to interpret that. Did you forget to? Your link is under the pages you've created.

I had not read the arbcom pages on Netoholic, nor did I previously know they existed. I have now read them (and their talk and evidence pages...ugh, heavy slogging through all the muck), and I was surprised to see some things. Netoholic has not had all of the same problems at SEWikipedia (possibly because there are fewer users and therefore less people to disagree with him, get into edit wars or flame wars with him, etc.). But some of his issues still remain, with a few modified by his greater power there (such as keeping the policy pages his way in spite of others' opinions). I will probably try talking to the mentors from his second ArbCom case. I don't know how easy it will be to create a dispute resolution policy there (though I would be interested in helping get it started), since although we are growing, there are still only about 7 active admins and not very many other regular contributors. If we do start creating a dispute resolution policy, I would like all the help I can get with how these things should work.

Would it make sense to go to Meta (as in stewards, probably) for help? Angela the steward is an admin at Simple, but she has done basically nothing to rein in Netoholic there, even though some users (possibly vandals or misguided users) have specifically asked her for help with him. That is why I don't think she would be someone to ask for help. She has made one comment that was in line with Netoholic (that in her view, SEWiktionary has no reason to exist), but I am sure that that has nothing to do with how Netoholic feels about it. Of course I forgive your ignorance of the SE projects.  :) I'm well aware that very few people know they exist, so don't worry about that. I agree with your assessment that Netoholic would consider your arrival as ganging up on him. The reason I'm talking to you about it is following Wikipedia:Dispute resolution under "Informal mediation" and/or "talking to third parties." I have done some of this (asking others to comment on my opinions and my discussions with him), but that has met with limited success. I should mention that other users/admins are becoming involved in the discussion now, and we are making progress towards consensus on both issues in a discussion on our version of the "village pump." It remains to be seen if Netoholic will abide by consensus. I have found another issue where he is bucking consensus, as regards stubs (he hates them and has repeatedly reverted to remove the cat from the template, among other unpopular actions), but I guess we'll cross that bridge when we come to it. If all else fails, I guess I'll mention mediation to Netoholic and see how he reacts (perhaps mentioning one or more people (either arbitor(s) from here or steward(s) from Meta) who might serve in that capacity). Under those circumstances and if it comes to that, would be willing to be on the list of possible mediators?

One last question (or small set of questions). Maybe I could search the answer out for myself, but it would be so much easier if you could just tell me: On Requests for deletion (I think it's called AfD here), is either simple vote-counting or vote-counting with consideration of arguments an acceptable form of finding consensus? Is an almost equal vote-count ratio a reason for deleting or saving an article nominated there? In case of an equal vote, is the admin who takes the action entitled to do what he feels is right as a sort of tie-breaker? Wow, thanks for asking if I want nomination to administrator. I will decline for now as I have a lot of other things to do, but I will think about it and let you know if (when ;-) ) I decide to try it. Right now I am still learning a lot about how Wikipedia works so I am not sure I am ready to be one either. I do have some questions, one important, two vanity.

The important one is a vandal IP address (it is at a high school I think) here: User talk:12.177.48.100. At what point / how does this get blocked?

The vanity questions are, first how do I figure out which is my exact 500th edit (short of counting them on the screen)? Also, I once found a page where you can enter your Username and it gave you statistics on your edits (total number, % in Main Space vs. Talk, etc.) but I can't find it now. If there are specific tasks (proofing a section, for example, or tracking down a particular detail), I tend to be better at that during the school year, as I often have only half an hour or so on those occasions when I can log in here. The way I understand it, if one came from the regions near the borderlands, odds are you are related to someone across it. Ditto for Romania, I believe, tho' that wouldn't apply to Germany, just Poland. If you're willing to start with copy edits, the original 'vomitous composition' I did to expand the 1632 (novel) article needs that neutral POV editing badly— it's mainly going to be exported as a Underlying History Behind... title, but for the moment, just making it less gushy, more encyclopedaic, and have good english would be a great start. It's pretty well wikified, and the only thing I know I need to add historically is the Catholic League, but perhaps you will come up with a few more for me.

I wish I spoke German! Another time fort why. The new version of the 1632 series article is the 'I found it' link on my page, and you can give that a go as well. IIRC, I petered out mid sentence in the section I was working on. If by checking in on these four pages you are not interested, then you're not my man.

Hi,

This feedback is a little late, but I wouldn't normally write this sort of note to a b'crat; I'm doing so because you specifically asked for feedback at RfA talk. First, let me say that I respect your decision, and your boldness in coming out of B'crat inactivity, and that I have already sent my good wishes to Jay on his promotion. That said, I do disagree with your decision; as you'd expect, I did oppose Jay at the RfA. Here's why I oppose your choice:

• The objections against Jay mostly mentioned his lack of experience -- in all of RfA, this is the easiest objection to remedy. Give him more time, and in two months or so, he was likely to have a unanimous RfA. Since you were last active as B'crat, this has become sorta standard: a good candidate with a few rough edges fails his first RfA, only to be accepted by acclamation a little later (see, using your admin-vision, the now deleted Gator1 RfA's for an example of this.) This allows the candidate to improve, the objectors to feel acknowledged, and the overall product to be a better seasoned admin. By promoting Jay "prematurely" (IMO, of course), this natural growth will now occur while he has admin buttons -- it's no big deal, but I do fear missteps generally in admins promoted too early, missteps that can build needless friction.

• Many sub-80% promotions, including the Luigi "error", are on 2nd or 3rd RfA's. To me, this makes sense. Any committed editor around here (unless they are a saint) will rub a few folks the wrong way; after waiting long enough, these "old grudges" really shouldn't weigh against a candidate unless there are serious charges underpinning them. By contrast, people opposing on a first RfA aren't very likely to have "grudges" against the candidate -- they are responding with honest feedback hoping for the candidate's improvement.

• In Jay's case, the concerns weren't just about experience. Seasoned admins and editors came forward to worry about civility, improper reversions, and "campaigning" concerns. When opposers have a wide range of reasons for wanting improvement in the candidate, rather than just repeating the refrain "too new", it is probably a good sign that more editing time for the candidate will benefit all -- he'll learn, we'll see him grow, and everybody can be happy.

It is for these reasons I do feel Jay's promotion was slightly premature and out of step with current practice. Take these observations for whatever you think they're worth, but I do hope you'll consider my tiny nagging voice (as one among the multitudes you've heard from, probably) in the future. Having been thinking about Seattle oddities in setting up the two articles above, something else has occurred to me. There was, about 10 years ago, a mushroom building at the S end of The Counterbalance (Queen Anne Hill). It was, as I recall, being remodeled as a restaurant, but the project ran out of funds and stalled. If it's still there, and even if it's not, it seems to me it would be a reasonable article. I have looked around, but haven't found one already existing. For that matter, The Counterbalance itself might merit an article, now that I think about it. J, thanks for the input on KBO and WftI. I agree that to say nothing of the dog may not survive a more ruthless editor, hence the hidden text attempt at protection. I've read Willis' book with enjoyment, but JKJ is still hard to beat. I'll keep an eye on the two articles and attempt to keep them up to snuff. Hope someone thinks to take a picture and post it, for both articles. I'd love to see a KBO bumper sticker or T-shirt or both.

RE: Johnny Lee Clary - Please help

Hey there, my name is Nick, my username is Potters house and I have encountered a problem with trying to provide any information about Johnny Lee Clary. I have posted this post off to other staff members also. I am not sure if this is the best route to resolve this, but can think of no other way.

The article Johnny Lee Clary has been deleted. I have known Johnny through telephone conversations and email for a short time now (about 3-4 months). He recently came and shared his life story in for our church group for the first time just two weeks ago. Before I met Johnny I became interested in his story i.e. his conversion from the head of the KKK in the US, to being a Christian Minister who now teaches against race hate groups. I found the article Johnny Lee Clary as it still is today, deleted, except for some small talk. If you read the talk you see what I have said at the time (notice I have gotten no reply, probable my fault as I don’t know heaps about WIKI policy). From my understanding Johnny Lee Clary was posting as The KingOfDixie and looks like he tried to change a few things on Wiki concerning the KKK. While this is a controversial subject, Johnny being the former leader of the KKK would probably know a thing or two and be able to contibute, but that’s another story. He eventually made an article about himself i.e. Johnny Lee Clary. Johnny being quite new to Wiki and ignorant of rules of conduct found himself at odds with some admins and had his site deleted.

Whilst observing Johnny over the last 3-4 months I have noticed that he is very outspoken against race hate groups such as the Neo Nazis, Skinheads, KKK etc. This, more often than not, lands Johnny in the hot seat. He has experienced persecution from racist groups for his departure from the KKK and voiced opinions against these racist organizations on his webpage, www.xkkk.org. Johnny has also received multiple death threats.

Because of his bold stance against these racist groups Johnny has become accustomed to hatred directed at him by those same groups. Johnny concluded that perhaps the guy who deleted the page Johnny Lee Clary was a white supremist. I am hoping to clear this up. Before he told me this, I started to create J L Clary, after hearing nothing from posting in user talk on Johnny Lee Clary's article. I wasn't 10 minutes into the J L Clary article when it was issued a deletion notice, and then before I had time to reply (about 5 minutes) it was deleted! I was amazed. I told this to Johnny and he said the main reason he was told that he couldn't have an article was because he was not prominent enough.

Johnny has a very famous testimony and has been on multiple TV shows like Oprah, Donahue, Jerry Springer, etc, and even recently when he preached in our town he made front page news, a double spread on his life, and the local ABC interviewed him live, which is not bad for our town (LISMORE NSW Australia) See http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=John_Kerry&dir=prev&offset=20050327125109&limit=500&action=history .

When David Wilkerson came to our town hardly anyone knew or cared, yet David Wilkerson is allowed an article (and rightfully so), but more people know of Johnny. As to whether he is famous or not, just Google search him and see all the TV interviews and radio interviews he does. He hangs with some of the most prominent Christian leaders in Australia. Besides this, just being the former KKK leader should be enough for an article (he doesn't even get a mention in the KKK one, and would be deleted). He was also a Pro Wrestler. So he is prominent in Christian circles, he is prominent amongst race hate groups, and he is also prominent in the WWE wrestling.

Johnny asked me to test the waters for him to see if he was being persecuted by someone from a race hate group. So I created some sites, John Clary Wade Watts and Operation Colorblind - the name of Johnny's Ministry. These have been fine until yesterday. I cannot understand why these sites are just issued a deletion notice? Just because they mention JLC? I was hoping to discuss these things but they are just deleted. The one on Wade Watts is about a black gospel preacher who was one of the leaders in the civil rights movement in the US and was good friends with Martin Luther King. He took Johnny Clary under his wing and even ordained Johnny as a minister (to this day Johnny is the only white man ordained in the All Black Baptist Church). But his article is up for deletion because I mentioned Clary and had a link.

That is why I am writing to you to see if you can help. It seems to me that the person(s) deleting all articles which even mention Johnny Lee Clary has an agenda. I thought that wikipedia admins had to keep a neutral stance on every article. It seems like this guy has a vendetta against JLC. Why delete the Wade Watts article. That is guilt by association and could be proof that all deletions are because of racial discrimination! I hope this is not the case and would think that it is politically motivated, as Johnny is a strong supporter of George Bush and Antaeus Feldspar of Kerry.

I thank you for reading this long winded post. I have only been using WIKI for about a year myself so I need your help, I don't really know what else to do. I hope you can help. I personally think that Johnny's story is one that is beneficial to the cause of reconciliation between races and to the3 unity of society as a whole. It would be a shame if WIKI became known for having covert racists. Of course I hope that this is a misunderstanding and that all will be cleared up soon.

Re-evaluation of bureaucrat status

Hi there! I'm posting to inform you of an ongoing discussion at Wikipedia talk:Bureaucrat removal, which is of relevance to you as an en.wiki bureaucrat. The discussion centres around whether bureaucrat status should be considered a 'lifetime' appointment like administrators, or whether bureaucrats should be subject to periodic reconfirmation in a manner more like the stewards. There is also consideration for a separate re-evaluation of the status of those bureaucrats who were promoted in the early days of wikipedia, when the standards at RfB were significantly lower than they are currently, and whether such users still retain the explicit trust of the community.

As an "inactive bureaucrat" (one who has not performed a 'crat action in the past year), we're particularly keen to hear your thoughts on these issues; in particular the following:

• Do you consider yourself to still be a wikipedia bureaucrat in spirit, or is the flag essentially just a legacy? Do you have any intention of ever returning to being an 'active' bureaucrat?
• What do you consider your position to be in terms of your 'mandate' from the community, in comparison to more recently-promoted bureaucrats?
• Would you be amenable to surrendering the bureaucrat flag, or participating in a reconfirmation RfB, if asked to do so? In what circumstances would you consider such an action?

Would you mind photographing the Alaska Airlines headquarters in SeaTac? Try to get a shot of the building with the Alaska logos visible.
