Categories and lists

{{helpme}}When looking at categories and lists, I keep seeing the message "the list may be slightly out of date." There's a help file that cryptically says something about how to fix this, but I can't really make heads or tails of it. Could someone break it down into plain English? Is there a special way you're supposed to format lists, or a template to use, to avoid seeing that message on a category? Thanks in advance, Jsharpminor (talk) 15:34, 6 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The short answer is that if an article gets blanked, it gets removed from its category. Even if it is immediately reverted. It takes some time (or another edit) for the article to show up in the category again. You'll always see that message in a category. -- Mufka ^(u) ^(t) ^(c) 15:54, 6 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I've just created a disambiguation page for Sauternes, because a wine region, a wine variety, a steamship, and a commune all linked to the same page. With over 500 links, it seemed appropriate. However, I can't figure out how to put the appropriate disambiguation link on the page about the town. I want it to say, "This article is about the commune in France. For other uses, see Sauternes (disambiguation). I think that's easy to do, I just don't know how to do it. Thanks in advance!! Jsharpminor (talk) 11:55, 28 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Watchlist numbers

I see the following on my watchlist:

mb Gunfight at the O.K. Corral‎; 13:43 . . (-43) . . CmdrObot (talk | contribs) (Compact Amazon URL; sp: innacurate→inaccurate)

I'd like to know -- what does the (-43) mean? And in some cases, the number is quite different -- in one case, it's (574). What does it all mean?

Additionally, is there a better place to ask random questions like this -- a forum or some such thing? I did browse the Watchlist help pages, but I didn't find any answers to this question.

I'm working on the "United States Presidential approval rating" page, and I've now noticed vandalism by this IP-address editor. What do I do?

You can revert it or edit it out. The vandalism page has a section about how to respond to vandalism. If appropriate, you can also leave a warning on the user's talk page.

Looking over the edits, the changes don't to my eye appear to be blatant vandalism, though, I admit I find the diffs of tables to be hard to read, especially when only numbers are changed.—C45207 | Talk 05:39, 28 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I think you're right: I was a tad hasty in screaming "Vandal!" But he does only use an IP address, and the data changed does reflect a party affiliation... but I will just go ahead and attempt to inform him that he's not getting the numbers from the right spot. It may well have been a good faith edit. Thanks for your help!

Moving pictures

There are a few pictures that are named incorrectly (misspelled) and should be moved. Where's the best place to go for help on that subject?

"Gallup" is spelled with 2 "L"s, not one.

Redirects with possibilities

Hi, just saw your undo on my edit. In the museum category cleanup I've been doing, when there's a large article about an airport, and a small portion about the airport museum, I've been putting in redirects from the museum name to the section in the larger article and labelling it with "R with possibilities" which means it might get expanded out to a separate article at some point. This also has the good side effect of putting the categories associated with the museum in the redirect so the museum name shows up in the lists, etc, not the larger article name which doesnt indicate its a museum. You are correct, that one edit is not disruptive. It is also one edit that I did not bother to revert. I understand that David1982m is editing in good faith, but there is a limit to good faith: "editing in good faith" is not an excuse for ignoring community consensus and undoing productive edits. Please assume good faith on my part; read more of the discussion on the approval ratings page, and corroborate this with the editing timeline for the associated page. David1982m has repeatedly gone against the community mandates, removed valid information, posted original research, and otherwise made a fairly simple page into a complicated ordeal. Looking at his user page, it seems to be a pattern. I do believe that David1982m is attempting to help the community, but he needs to understand how to do so with the help and guidance of that community.

I have warned him in the talk page. I have warned him on the Administrators' noticeboard. I have warned him on his own talk page. After all that, he still refuses to stop being disruptive. I know that there's an "assume good faith" policy, but it ends somewhere. If the page is changed again, he will be reported and most likely blocked. That's not threatening -- that's fact. Jsharpminor, this was a bit more than overreaching. David was discussing the changes on the talk page and trying to come to an agreement. Giving him a final warning for vandalism was far from appropriate. Please discuss the issue with him civilly on the article's talk page rather than edit warring.
