National Archives and Records Administration (NARA)

New Years Message for WikiProject United States

With the first of what I hope will be monthly newsletters I again want to welcome you to the project and hope that as we all work together through the year we can expand the project, create missing articles and generally improve the pedia thought mutual cooperation and support. Now that we have a project and a solid pool of willing members I wanted to strike while the iron is hot and solicite help in doing a few things that I believe is a good next step in solidifiing the project. I have outlined a few suggestions where you can help with on the projects talk page. This includes but is not limited too updating Portal:United States, assessing the remaining US related articles that haven't been assessed, eliminating the Unrefernced BLP's and others. If you have other suggestions or are interested in doing other things feel free. I just wanted to offer a few suggestions were additional help is needed. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions, comments or suggestions or you can always post something on the projects talk page. Date on Pawlenty article

Hi, JayJasper - just a quick note: the Weekly Standard article is dated the 17th of Jan; presumably the date the magazine is supposed to come out. Since we back-date news stories from a few days ago, I assume the same would be done for articles to come out in the future, and therefore listing it as the 17th of Jan, rather than 7th, is correct. Hey SE7, duly noted and corrected. That was actually an inadvertant revert. Funny thing, it seems you and I were updating Cain to the Declared section at just about the same time. When I went to make the change, I got the "edit conflict" message and when it cleared, you had made virtually the same change I was in the process of making! I then decided to refine the ref & website links, so - to make it easy - I cut & pasted the preview page from by the previously attempted edit. In so doing so, I unintentionally reversed some of your recent changes that I was unaware of, which - as you can now see - has been fixed.--JayJasper (talk) 19:51, 12 January 2011 (UTC)

PPI Research Update

First, thanks JayJasper, I am in awe of the work the assessment team did for this project. The results from the quantitative metric assessments were amazing, really. Check out what your work shows about Wikipedia article quality - I think it’s exciting, but you’ve probably figured out by now that I’m a bit of a nerd. A summary is posted on the Assessment page and a report will be on the Outreach wiki.
Second, I wanted to ask if you haven’t done many assessments on the Student post articles, to please do a couple; articles toward the bottom have only 1 or none assessments. I know some of the material is pretty dry, but this assessment is the most important one for the fall semester and this assessment will be the primary method of showing article quality to the project grant funder. Wikimania 2012 bid, DC chapter & next meetup!

1. At WikiXDC in January, User:Harej proposed that DC submit a bid to host Wikimania 2012. A bid and organizing committee is being formed and seeks additional volunteers to help. Please look at our bid page and sign up if you want to help out. You can also signup for the bid team's email list.
2. To support the Wikimania bid, more events like WikiXDC, and outreach activities like collaborations with the Smithsonian (ongoing) and National Archives, there also has been discussion of forming Wikimedia DC, as an official Wikimedia chapter. You can express interest and contribute to chapter discussions on the Wikimedia DC Meta-Wiki pages.
3. To discuss all this and meet up with special guest, Dutch Wikipedian User:Kim Bruning, there will be a meetup, Wikipedia:Meetup/DC 16 this Tuesday at 7pm, at Capitol City Brewery, Metro Center. There will be a pre-meetup Wikimania team meeting at 6pm at the same location.

Public Policy Initiative Recruiting Assessors for Spring

Hi JayJasper, Your work assessing article quality is really valuable and generated some excellent results from fall semester. The assessment process has been streamlined and dates are clearly posted for the upcoming assessment rounds. The Initiative has a lot more classes signed up for spring, so I would like to recruit some more Wikipedian assessors, and I was hoping you could help with that. I think community members would be more likely to participate if they are recruited by Wikipedians like yourself who have a good reputation. The strategy that worked last semester was to leave an individual message on the talk pages of non-adversarial Wikipedians. I looked for people by contributions to public policy related articles and those active on the 1.0 Editorial Team. I usually mentioned in the message what specifically about their work history made me think they would be a good assessment team participant. This is super time consuming to contact like 50 people, but only doing a few is not so bad. Also, I am looking for feedback about assessing with PPI, so please check out the discussion on the assessment tab, and let me know there if you have a chance to recruit some other assessors. missed vandal edit

Hello, and thank you for removing vandalism from Article One of the United States Constitution. This is much appreciated, but unfortunately your repair was not successful in restoring the article to its pre-vandalised state. For future reference, it is better to deal with vandalism by checking the article's page history to determine how it appeared before it was vandalised. You can then restore the whole article, or the relevant part of it, to an appropriate earlier version. If you simply delete the visible vandalism then any content removed or overwritten by the vandal is lost. See How to deal with vandalism for details. Thank you. Ooppsss! You missed the previous edit. Thanks for bringing this to my attention, and for reverting the vandalism I missed. Typically, I do check the page's history before reverting vandalism in order to return it to the pre-vandalized state, but I obviously forgot to do so this time. I didn't see anywhere that Ron Paul served in the Air Force as a surgeon in the Vietnam war and served in the National Guard. I'm completely new to Wiki and wasn't quite sure how to add this information and saw in the history that you add quite a bit of information so I think you know what you're doing which is why I contacted you. Hi, Jcrist82, and welcome to Wikipedia! I could not locate a reliable source confirming that Paul was a surgeon in the Vietnam War. It is my understanding that he was an Air Force surgeon during the War but was never actually served in Vietnam. His service as a USAF surgeon was already mentioned in the article, but the statement had been unsourced until I added a citation. I would not have thought to do this had you not sought my assistance, so thanks for bringing this to my attention. The citation I found also mentioned his National Guard service which - as you pointed out - was missing from the article, so I added it. I hope my contribution was helpful, as I am happy to be of assistance. To further assist you, I'll send a "welcome package" to your talk page with some helpful links that will show you how to add information as well as spell out the basics of contributing to Wikipedia. Assessment with WP:USPP is the ultimate!

A new assessment round is posted. This round is mostly starts and stubs, so evaluation should be really quick. WP:USPP Assessment 2.1
The Public Policy Initiative is super exciting this term. The topics are really interesting this term and the student's are producing some really good quality content. Recent numbers indicate that our project is actually contributing a significant amount of content to Wikipedia. There is a group of about 20 subject matter experts who are assessing, but the Wikipedians are so consistent, that I really need your scores to measure article quality.

DC Meetup: May 7 @ Tenleytown Library

New Assessment for article improvements with PPI

Inclusion standard

I'm going to be jumping into that discussion very shortly. I've been observing that exchange for a while now from the sidelines in part because when I first became aware of it, it was moving so quickly that it took time to digest all the various arguments being put forth. And also in part because I was hearing many viewpoints worthy of consideration from all sides of the debate and decided I'd wait until having taken them all into account before commenting. I plan within the next day or two to take a shot at playing diplomat and put forth some ideas that I think, or at least hope, will help bridge the gap between the warring factions. That may prove to be a Herculean task, but I'm going to give it a go. Oh, and to answer your question: in a nutshell, I mostly still agree with the existing standard, but have a particular sticking point where WP:WEIGHT is concerned which prevents me from giving an unqualified "yes" at the present time. I'll address that concern, among other things, when I submit the aforementioned proposals.--JayJasper (talk) 22:26, 8 June 2011 (UTC)

Hi Fmueller, welcome to Wikipedia and thanks for contributing. This is the edit you're referring to. Usually, I leave an explanation in the edit summary when making changes (reverts or otherwise), but forgot to do so this time, my apologies for that. I reverted the edit because a) it was unsourced; and b) it was unclear what was meant by "rehabilitated" in this context (perhaps you meant to use a different word?). I hope you didn't find the revert discouraging, after all, there's a certain amount of trial-and-error involved when you're a new editor (that was certainly true for me), and hope you'll continue to edit Wikipedia and enjoy it. Thanks for contacting me, and please don't hesitate to do so again if I can be helpful in any way. BTW, if you could elaborate on or clarify the statement you added to the article, I might be able to help you locate a source for it if you can't find one. Many thanks for taking the time to respond to my inquiry. Since I didn't even log in for making the initial change to the article, I guess I should not complain about you not leaving an explanation for reverting it! Anyhow, I appreciate the need to source everything that's added, and I should have done so, especially since what I added is already contained later on in the article - sourced and in more detail - under "Dukakis proclamation". I just thought it deserved more emphasis by being included in the intro of the article, and it seems you agree.

I struggled a bit with finding a word for what Dukakis did. I believe both "vindicate" and "exonerate" imply Vanzetti had been guilty and were pardoned. I then consulted the German language article, and found "rehabilitiert". When checking Merriam Webster for the English meaning, I found as second meaning of rehabilitate: "to restore to good repute : reestablish the good name of". This seems to be exactly what Dukakis had in mind when he said: "any disgrace should be forever removed from their names". Spanish general election

This page move was incorrect. Aside from Canada and its provinces, jurisdictions without fixed terms, and even many with fixed terms, are parked at "Next [name of jurisdiction] election" until the year of the election is certain. See Next United Kingdom general election, Next Australian federal election, Next German federal election, and Next Japanese general election. (Canada uses ordinals, e.g., 42nd Canadian federal election, until the year is certain.) The reason is made clear by what happened after your page move: until you reach the point where an election can only happen in the last year of the mandate, any year in the title is speculative. Just 13 days after you moved the article to "Spanish general election, 2012", it had to be moved again to "Spanish general election, 2011" because Zapatero called a snap election. -Rrius (talk) 04:16, 26 August 2011 (UTC)

I noticed you are the original creator of the 2012 independent presidential candidates. I recently have become a 2012 presidential candidate. I have provided my information below. If you or you could refer me to someone that may help in building a first page - since I believe that is what is required to be submitted to the 2012 independent page. I do not have any programming experience, yet I am making an effort to gradually learn. I would greatly appreciate the contribution on your behalf or your references behalf. Brandon Dean

'Brandon Dean (Born July 12, 1977), is an independent candidate for President of the United States. He is currently the youngest candidate in the 2012 Election Campaign; as well, he is the youngest candidate ever to run for office of presidency that would be eligible to take office once elected. He is currently 34 years old and will be 35 years old at the time of the November election. He has never ran for any other political office before this. His campaign committee is "Showing U.S. Citizens How To Run For President." The purpose of his running is to show every detail of the candidacy process; as Brandon Dean says, "It is an experiential candidacy, I want to make the dream of becoming president of the United States of America more accessible to every American citizen."

Dean is current a full time respiratory therapist, or an RRT (Registered Respiratory Therapist). In 2008, Dean graduated from University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences with a degree in CardoPulmonary Care. He holds licensure as a Respiratory Care Practitioner in Oklahoma and Arkansas. He also graduated from University of the Ozarks, in Clarksville, AR with a degree in Business Administration. He is the founder of LifeMatching, a personal matchmaking company; and is founder of Brimful Productions, an experimental video and media company.

Brandon Dean was originally born in Fort Smith, Arkansas at St. Edwards Hospital. He has lived in many cities in Arkansas including Fort Smith, Fayetteville, Harrison, Batesville, Conway, Little Rock. He currently resides in Owasso, Oklahoma and commutes to Tulsa to work everyday.

National Archives ExtravaSCANza

You are invited to the National Archives ExtravaSCANza, taking place every day next week from January 4–7, Wednesday to Saturday, in College Park, Maryland (Washington, DC metro area). Come help me cap off my stint as Wikipedian in Residence at the National Archives with one last success! This will be a casual working event in which Wikipedians are getting together to scan interesting documents at the National Archives related to a different theme each day—currently: spaceflight, women's suffrage, Chile, and battleships—for use on Wikipedia/Wikimedia Commons. The event is being held on multiple days, and in the evenings and weekend, so that as many locals and out-of-towners from nearby regions^1 as possible can come. Please join us!
