That's fair enough. I was looking for media uses of the phrase as part of a paper to do with the standards and ethics of coinings of words and phrases for modern concepts; particularly for the OED. It just struck me that the subject of the article accounted for the lion's share of the media usage of that phrase, and then considered that in light of the editing guidelines (Iain Duncan Smith, and the way in which his name should be used in his article is a notable example of the angle I saw this from). Apologies, my view of what constitutes a reliable source has been altered a bit by studying a subject which does actually give credence to blogs and lads mags, ha ha. Thanks for responding, if anything you've at least made me read the reliable sources stuff.

It was a pleasure, finding free images is something I've recently got into. Ordy654139 may well be a throwaway WP:VOA, they made a couple of edits over a ten-minute period then disappeared. I warned them anyway; if they do start using that account again it'll be blocked soon enough if they keep editing like that. Thank you for that. WP:VOA – I wasn't aware of that acronym yet :) Wow, you did upload a lot of great pictures to Commons! If you ever come across some nice photographs of platform shoes, please take pity on our article. It's illustrated with some of the ugliest pictures on the web. I've got a bit of a weak spot for cool shoes (early Quilicis – *swoon*), but my current camera is not up to the job, and I no longer own any indoor lighting equipment.
May I also ask you a question about copyvios? I usually delete them on sight. See Pantha du Prince, Bruce Gilbert, Klee Irwin, JD & The Straight Shot. (The latter looks like a project by James L. Dolan, though the infobox is currently lacking a direct link to Dolan's main biography.) Is that the correct way of doing things, or should I have reported them to WP:CP first? I'll keep an eye out. I see what you mean, a couple of those are not very elegant! There's a picture at Commons of some Vivienne Westwood platforms (the ones Naomi Campbell tripped over in) which may be of use (File:Vivienne Westwood Naomi Campbell shoes.jpg)?

Re your reversion, you state that there is a Wikiquote article on him. What do you think of having a Quotes section with a note pointing at Wikiquote? If you agree, just go ahead and add it. There was no indication of that on the description page, it was tagged {{pd-self}} which should only be used on images where the uploader is the copyright holder. However it's not sufficient to have permission to use it only in one particular article, it would need to be released under a suitable licence such as CC-BY-SA, which permits commercial re-use and modification. If Mr Steen is willing to do this, please ask him to confirm permission through OTRS following the process described in WP:Donating copyrighted materials. I noticed you uploaded a second version of the image, the tag is just to request that the first version is deleted from the history. The non-free content criteria (specifically point 7) requires that all non-free images are used in at least one article, so any older versions which are not being used should be deleted. Hello, I'm not sure how to quite "redirect" you to my english wikipedia talk page, but if you could respond there I would be more likely to give you any timely respond to any questions regarding this image. However, 1st please take a look at the comments for the picture nomination. I gave concise details regarding the time that I took the picture. 2nd, I am becoming quite upset when I cannot post a picture of my own work to Wikipedia for the betterment of all of the readers/editors. This is because an individual on Twitter, by the name of Patrick Sandusky I believe, has been given full credit for my picture. I am trying to make Wikipedia a better place in general for all users. When I gave this picture to news stations, I never thought that a big news outlet like YAHOO! would give Mr. Sandusky the credit and thus repute all of my work. It's not even the part of someone else taking credit for my photo that bothers me the most. What bothers me is that during this long process of the fires, my house burned to the ground. So while an individual like Mr. Sandusky takes credit for my work that kind of bothers me because I lost my house and just about everything else. In fact the only thing I have to my name is a couple checkbooks, my car and the camera and lens I took this photo with. So to claim that my work is "dubious" is completely biased and not logical just because I made a mistake with a prior picture. I made the Semyon Varlamov picture file in good faith with the author's permission but accidentally uploaded it as my own work. That was clearly my fault and it should have been deleted. However, since you are dead set on deleting this picture I encourage you to do what you need to. Given my circumstances, I cannot afford legal fee's to file a cease and desist order against Yahoo! or Mr. Sandusky. I guess I will have to just take this one and know that I originally took the picture but lost credibility due to my financial and housing situation because of a fire that actually affected me. As for Mr. Sandusky, I can only hope that this credit of notability helps him in his efforts. Good day to you and happy deleting! Basically it needs a reliable source that has previously been published, so if it's been mentioned in an article about him published by a media organisation that should be acceptable. I don't think a photo is suitable as that would require original research, ie someone would have to interpret the photo to determine that he is performing a backflip in it. Can you help me?

Hi, you've helped me before and I wondered if you could again. Someone has merged my page with another and I dispute the reason for that being done. The person has cited "lack of notoriety as an ice skater" and I really don't believe that to be the case. Colin Ratushniak (the name of my page) was runner up in Dancing on Ice 2011, has appeared in Holiday on Ice and is about to appear in Kyran Bracken's Ice party in November. he has a significant following on Twitter and is known well within the professional ice skating arena. Wikipedia only accepts licences which allow commercial reuse and derivative works (see WP:ICT#Guidelines). This licence has two restrictions which make it unsuitable for Wikipedia; firstly "The rights to use in physical form ... are retained by the author" is a restriction on reuse as the image cannot be used in print, so for example this would prevent it being used in Wikipedia:Books. Secondly, "The licence does not grant a right to use altered versions of the work" is a restriction on derivative works. January (talk) 19:29, 26 October 2012 (UTC)

Hi there - I saw you deleted this photo and I wanted to see if you could clarify what photos can be used from Flckr as I honestly thought it was okay to upload since it has a Creative Commons 2.0 license. The licence at Flickr was the non-commercial variant of the CC licence, which is not considered free for Wikipedia purposes (explanation here), WP:FLICKR lists the Flickr licences which are allowed and disallowed. Additionally, a Flickr licence is only valid if the Flickr user is the owner of the images, and this Flickr channel appears to be a fan's collection of promotional images which were probably uploaded there in violation of copyright.
Promotional images of fictional characters can meet fair use requirements in an article about the character, but the article already had one and it's questionable whether two could be justified. Also WP:NFCC requires that non-free images are correctly attributed to the original source/author so it would be advisable to use images from more trustworthy sources. I can't see anything about that site that suggests it is a reliable source. I can't see any information about the authors or any indication of what editorial oversight it has. Both, as the content is not supported by a suitable reference. Per WP:BLP, articles on living persons require a high standard of sourcing, particularly for anything related to a controversy. Also it is WP:UNDUE to have almost the entire article consisting of a controversy section. Your reverts of the Ankit Fadia article state that you're "removing material not supported by sources or cited to unreliable sources" So with that, there are 1741 mentions of Chennai Online, do you plan on deleting those passages in Wikipedia articles mentioning Chennai Online as a source?

Granted there are one mention of Wendy McAuliffe and its in the Ankit Fadia article but there are 35,700 results for "Wendy McAuliffe" ZDNet in Google, and at her current venture about page http://www.populatedigital.com/people/ mentions "Wendy began her career as a journalist for ZDNet, the UK’s leading online technology newswire, during which time she became a leading authority in online privacy and child protection online." so that's another unreliable sources?!?

Surely an article about Ankit Fadia by Suelette Dreyfus is a reliable source, but you nixed that too.

I am completely confused about process here and about license tagging and I really spent a long time trying to figure it out from the help files. I hope I clicked the right link to address the person who questioned this, and I'll be very grateful for any advice/guidance.

The photo in question is owned by the subject, Joseph Rescigno. However, it has a *credit line* for use by anyone who re-uses it. I thought it was always courteous to include the name of the photographer even though the subject bought and paid for ownership of the photo. Please point me to whatever language I should use. I'll be happy to adjust it. If it means that the photographer gets no recognition, I'm very surprised but I'll do it. That is within my power. Is that creating this issue?

The licence tag and the credit line are fine, we just need confirmation from the copyright holder that they have agreed to release the image with that licence (this is the usual practice when the image is uploaded by someone other than the copyright holder). This is usually the photographer, but if it is a work for hire it may be that Mr Rescigno owns the rights. The copyright holder should contact permissions-commons@wikimedia.org to confirm permission, there is a suggested wording at WP:CONSENT which can be used. January (talk) 20:33, 1 December 2012 (UTC)

Maybe you do not notice, but the yellow and the green were brighter than the current one, the background looked like a fabric instead of glossy, and the lines were obviously seen instead of invisible. Interesting – according to the article there have been two re-releases which could have had slightly different colours. I just uploaded the version that was deleted from Commons (it had been in the article since May 2010 without being challenged). However, photos of vinyl versions have a different colour arrangement, with the red stripe in the centre [4][5], so it seems that was the original cover – if that is the case a decent quality version of that cover would probably be the ideal. Shadow_Hand

Hi, I've recently been trying to update the images on the Shadow_Hand page, but don't seem to be able to comply with the guidelines. I first added two images on a non-free license, next in response to feedback that there was no reason that a free image could not be created, I created free versions of the images (I first tried to update the existing images but the copyright section of the page didn't seem to reflect my updates).

I then got another message saying there was no proof that the image was licensed under CC-SA so I used the template to send a consent email (I work for the company that created the images).

Finally all images have been removed, and the free image I uploaded the second time around was tagged with the following:

I don't quite understand why they were both deleted, once the original non free version was removed, the second free image was no longer redundant.

Apologies for the long post, if you could help me comply with the regulations in order to get the images up onto the page it would be much appreciated.

Fadia edit undo

Regarding the edit on Apr 6, 2013 for the Fadia page; while I added the link, the citations in question are authored by a small team on the web site, to which I contribute. Further, while I appreciate the policy, the material has been published for some time and has not been found to contain errors. Parts of it have been validated externally as well, although we do not publish that. Please reconsider adding, and feel free to verify the accuracy of the references. Thank you. The material having being published for some time does not change the fact that this is a self-published source and therefore completely unacceptable for a BLP.
Since you mention that you are involved with attrition.org, you may have a conflict of interest and should therefore exercise particular caution if you are considering linking to the site in any article, or editing Attrition (website) - please see Wikipedia:Conflict of Interest for the relevant guideline. Understood. Do you my point though? For example, there was something factually incorrect, and not sourced at all on one page referring to me specifically. That should not be allowed to stand for years without citation. If I provide a link, self published or otherwise, that is marginally better (but understandably not ideal), it should be allowed as long as it is properly disclaimed. Reading through the policies, I understand them and largely agree. Some are up for interpretation or debate though. Many in my field consider me to be an expert on detecting plagiarism due to my work with Attrition (website). Per the referencing policy, "However, if an author is an established expert with a previous record of third-party publications on a topic, their self-published work may be considered reliable for that topic, though third-party publications are still preferable." I don't know if I am an expert, as I detest that term largely due to over-use. But if public perception says I am, then it seems self-published work could be considered valid for example.
Anyway, feel free to look at my edits. You will see that one addition to the Attrition (website) page was 'negative' in the sense it made us look bad, which was the intention of the person who made the original edit <redacted>. That was a clear case of a conflict of interest, but we did not edit the page to avoid problems with policy here. My only goal with having an account is to correct inaccurate material, and provide citations when possible for any topic. That is something I have been preaching about in InfoSec, as many researchers and authors do a horrible job of it. Jericho347 (talk) 22:36, 7 April 2013 (UTC)
Removing unsourced information about yourself is fine, but additions cited to your own website are potentially more controversial. Regarding the part of the policy you quote, there is an exception for WP:Biographies of living people - per WP:SPS,"Never use self-published sources as third-party sources about living people, even if the author is an expert, well-known professional researcher, or writer.", which rules out the site as a source for Fadia.
