Article Feedback Tool update

Hey Jackmcbarn. I'm contacting you because you're involved in the Article Feedback Tool in some way, either as a previous newsletter recipient or as an active user of the system. As you might have heard, a user recently anonymously disabled the feedback tool on 2,000 pages. We were unable to track or prevent this due to the lack of logging feature in AFT5. We're deeply sorry for this, as we know that quite a few users found the software very useful, and were using it on their articles.

We've now re-released the software, with the addition of a logging feature and restrictions on the ability to disable. Obviously, we're not going to automatically re-enable it on each article—we don't want to create a situation where it was enabled by users who have now moved on, and feedback would sit there unattended—but if you're interested in enabling it for your articles, it's pretty simple to do. Just go to the article you want to enable it on, click the "request feedback" link in the toolbox in the sidebar, and AFT5 will be enabled for that article.

Hi, Jack. Thank you for helping out at 3O! Help in dispute resolution is always very much appreciated. Just a quick word about this removal. If you'll look back through the 3O talk page archives, you'll see that volunteers have been criticized — though not by me — for removing disputes which have only one or two extra editors. (I generally won't remove them for multiple editors unless there are at least 4, and usually 5, editors involved, but that's just me.) Removals for that reason and for the dispute involving excess incivility were the reason the 6-day staleness standard was adopted so that slightly-nonconforming cases could stay on the list to see if anyone wants to take them despite their warts, but then be easily removed if no one does. Other reasons for removal, particularly for insufficient discussion and for mainly-conduct-not-content are less controversial and can be done immediately without much fear of criticism. I'm not complaining or criticizing, but just want to let you know that some might take issue. In any event, we're very glad to have you involved in DR. @Srich32977: I don't think that Jack posted that. I think he just did some cleanup on it as a 3O volunteer. It was posted by a frequently-changing dynamic IP, 109.78.24.155 (talk · contribs) at the time, and I don't think that's Jack. Writing an article about your company is a really bad idea, no matter how careful you're being. If you have no choice but to write the article, you should use the Article Wizard and create it as an Articles for creation submission. Reply to your two messages

Jack, slow down a little. I am a new user to wikipedia. I deleted the "talk" on my page, because i got an option to. I clean my inbox in the same way, and deleted the message, figuring that i didn't need to read it anymore. You may want to angle your approach towards sympathetic instead of assumptive and directly provocative. I am not trying to cause issues, rather am trying to get a hang of how to navigate around wikipedia. I don't think attacking my mistakes will necessarily make me understand what i am doing wrong, especially if you take a aggresive tone to it. Also with regards to the changes to Heidi Hautala, I assumed that a photographer sharing his photographs on wiki commons needs to leave his name in the form of "photograph by Marshall Niles" under his own work. If i did that (without adding my own website, as you advised me not to), and that seems to bother you to a point where you accuse me of disruptive editing and more, then this is a no brainer for me. I'm looking for positive guidance, not aggressive tough love. If you are representing wikipedia, I think you can do a better job at interacting with new users. That page has had a problem for a long time with editors trying to sneak out any content that makes Qnet sound bad, so I just re-added it because you didn't mention removing it in your edit summary. The way you formatted the article, it's currently almost impossible to read. The table of contents you added isn't necessary. One will be added automatically. Also, instead of doing headings like "heading [edit source]", put "==heading==" and it will set everything up for you. I have just noticed that you declined by G11 speedy of Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/EtQ, Inc. with the comment "I thought we didn't do this for AfCs "

I rather thought we did, for I've deleted over a hundred such, as nominated by other editors, and other admins have deleted probably about twice that number of mine. What is true, is that the standards are not as demanding, for we make a greater assumption that the problems are fixable. But undoubted advertisement should be removed anywhere in Wikipedia, and I think this qualifies. I'm not sure what procedure will work, though I might try MfD--There has been some discussion about how to prevent or at least discourage the multiple tries at hopeless articles short of waiting for G13. You can't remove it for now. All Wikipedia editors are invited to discuss whether to delete the pages you created. In about a week, the discussion will close. When it closes, if the decision was to keep the pages, the mfd notice will then be removed from the pages. If the decision was to delete the pages, the pages will all be deleted in their entirety and should not be recreated. Currently, it appears that the pages will be deleted. If you want them to be kept, you should post at Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/User:Farhad shahnawaz explaining why. Jackmcbarn (talk) 01:05, 24 September 2013 (UTC)

Bot archiving

Jack, I'm hoping your technical knowledge extends to configuring bot archiving. MiszaBot is not working. Therefore, another user changed ANI's archiving to ClueBot, but ClueBot hasn't archived it. I'm assuming it's incorrectly configured, but I don't know what's wrong with it. I've e-mailed the owner of ClueBot, but so far no response. Anything you can do to help? ANI is getting really unwieldy. It may implode soon - now that would be real drama.--Bbb23 (talk) 23:33, 6 October 2013 (UTC)

MiszaBot II is just dead, and Misza13 doesn't seem to be reachable, so we're out of luck there. To make matters worse, since the archive for ANI isn't a subpage of ANI, a key is needed to get ClueBot III to archive it, and nobody seems to know what the right key is, and Cobi doesn't seem to be around. I've tweaked the template a little bit, but I don't have high hopes. We need to get either Misza13 or Cobi back, or someone else needs to write an archive bot. Yes, it's intentional. The idea is to keep people who don't know what they're doing from archiving something to somewhere inappropriate, though it would be good if more than one person knew how to generate keys, or even if it just needed "override=yes" or something instead of a key. A question about this article "Brunei"

Is "Recognised" suitable to describe English on the info-box in regards to this Section 2 of Article 82 on the Country's Constitution?

Unfortunately, that isn't acceptable. You need at least some independent sources. If you can't find any, it may be too soon for the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians to have a Wikipedia article. You may also want to read WP:GNG and WP:NCORP. However, Lee Thornett does have 2 children and another on the way (in approx 5 months time) so you could actually say at present, they have 2.4 children. Hello, this is regarding your review of Rendezvous Hashing. The previous reviewer had asked for two changes: (1) a reliable reference to justify the "provably minimal" claim, and (2) change the "attractive properties" phrase, since that was seen as too promotional. This reviewer had seen the article as otherwise being of Wikipedia quality. (Reviewer's words: "Otherwise a good article - please re-submit after fixing.")

I have followed the reviewer's directions. The references [1] and [2] contain a proof showing that disruption is minimal, and have now been added. The phrase "attractive properties" has been changed to the more neutral "properties".

I'm going to respond to the comment on my talk page here so there's only one place where discussion about this submission is taking place. (I hope y'all don't mind.) The cleanup that is needed probably includes style and grammar changes. Specifically, the article is in good prose until suddenly, in the "The HRW Algorithm For Rendezvous Hashing" section, there is a burst of technical language; this might be simplified a little. Furthermore, the "History" section could have a little more content in it, such as places where it's used or notable people who have used it. The number of 11 million is totally unsubstantiated. There is no such ethnic group information in the census. The speakers of the language is the closest information in the census that is valid. My name is Timothy, (username tcneumann) I sincerely apologise, the removal was by accident, i am new to learning the process of table formatting, duplicated the code from the help page to mine to template a table and accidentally deleted your content instead of mine due to working on the safari tab!

On a side note, i am wondering if you sir may be able to help with table format that i would like to input into my page [9]

What i would like to do if you may be able to have a quick look is push the orange table margin to right screen, thus pushing 'Where else can Dietary Calcium be found?' down to begin a line under the coloured tables?

Isn't that inconsistent on the part of Wikipedia? I am not trying to be combative or sarcastic. We are a legitimate organization with 4,500 members. We publish books, a peer-reviewed medical journal, and we hold educational seminars for doctors all over the country. The only other sources I could provide about us are press releases floating around on the Internet. But they typically deal with a single issue, such as the dangers of prescription painkillers, etc.

Any advice you can give would be appreciated.

Your question's actually a common one. See WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS. The fact that things exist now that violate our policies isn't a legitimate reason to allow new things to be created that violate our policies. Also, per WP:PSCOI, it's strongly recommended that you not write an article about things you are affiliated with. Doing so will almost certainly lead to a bias, no matter how careful you are. Also, per notability guidelines at WP:GNG, independent sources are needed for a subject to be considered notable. Once independent sources exist and establish notability, someone else will write the article. For now, if none exist, it may be WP:TOOSOON for it to have an article.   • There was a problem with Parsoid (the program used by VisualEditor to convert wikitext to annotated HTML) on November 4, between 19:40 and 20:40 (UTC).   • The Beta Features tool is now available on Commons and Meta-Wiki. With it, you can test new features before they're added for everyone. The plan is to add this tool to all wikis on November 21. [21]
