Ogopogo

I have reverted your recent edit to this article or two reasons. First, the old engraving is a much better inobox image than the photo of the contemporary statue. More importantly, the stuff about the song is interesting, but you need a source which explicitly links it to the name of the creature. It doesn't matter that the old engraving looks better, because it is not Ogopogo. The image page says it is a creature from New Brunswick.

The source does explicitly say that "Ogopogo" was named after the song: "it was this very sheet music that had originated one of the most familiar of all modern-day cryptid nicknames". It is written by Karl Shuker, who is a world-famous cryptologist who has published books about cryptids including Ogopogo. Per WP:RS, "Self-published material may be acceptable when produced by an established expert on the topic of the article whose work in the relevant field has previously been published by reliable third-party publications." Notation tag

About the chess notation template location, could I survey you by asking, what caused you to think it was not in the "right" location? (Several ProjChess members collaborated re position some time ago on the topic, and there is a slow conversion of articles away from the lede image, especially in a chess BLP.) For example, was it precedent (unconverted articles)? The checkered symbol in the notation tag box was suggested to be changed to something else (specifically "1.e4"), I'm wondering if presence of the current checkered symbol in the box might have caused you to feel it should therefore be associated physically closer to the lede image (checkered chessboard), and whether the idea "1.e4" as symbol instead might be a good idea by being less associative to it!? I'm looking to understand what prompted your change, and any thoughts/feedback, too. (Thx.) Ihardlythinkso (talk) 04:36, 12 November 2011 (UTC)

Sorry, I didn't know there was discussion on this. It just seemed to me that the positioning was a bit awkward, as it is sort of floating between the image and the table of contents; it doesn't seem to be "anchored" to anything. I haven't seen any other articles use this kind of positioning (although I don't read chess articles often). In my opinion it looks better and more consistent to have it to the right. Thanks for the feedback. A reason chess members liked adjacent to TOC, it doesn't waste vertical space there. My own feeling is that the lead image (especially in a BLP) should get "top billing" (as in newspapers carrying their most important story for the day in upper-right of their front page). IMO also, in comparison to any lead image (article topic) the notation tag really has zero weight (so, it's good to keep from cluttering the lead image space & detracting from same). Granted it is a novel placement (it gave an Admin fits), but of course new or different being bad is a fallacy. The TOC is too just an article reading aid. (Maybe in a hundred years, or 1000 views, it'll seem normal & right next to TOC!?) Thx again for the feedbacks. Ihardlythinkso (talk) 10:36, 12 November 2011 (UTC)

Kiss of the Gypsy

VPL update

Hi IH. I was in the VPL today and was able to have a chat with Ms. Russell. She apologises for not getting back to us. The proposal is still in the works, she is waiting for feedback from legal and IT departments. She mentioned that one stumbling block is that the IT dept. is quite small, and it may be an issue diverting them from their regular tasks. The requirements from their IT department would actually be quite small I think. For the initial data, just a DVD with the images and indexed metadata; for their ongoing dig program, we would be building an upload app for them and they would just have to write a script to run it (and install pywikipedia I guess). Most of the work would be on our side, especially the systematic names and cats. IH, I have some ideas on how to crawl the site, it's definitely doable - however I think at this point it's best to let them work through their process or at least tell them we want to crawl it and ask for their blessing. It would be pretty unfriendly to say "forget it, we just did it ourselves" at this point. If we get them to cooperate, it's a model to take to every archive in Canada. Hi there. Always reverts etc come across as grumpy or awful so I thought I'd explain my reasoning. There is nothing wrong with P2. Perfectly happy molecule and quite stable. Apparently it has a real triple bond even and is diamagnetic. The catch is that when one say something is unstable, it is required to state unstable with respect to what. That line of argument then launches a long explanation that we might want to avoid (or not?). Maybe I am being litigious or too picky, in which case go ahead and revert me. Won't bother me at all. Ah, I see what you mean. By "instability", the book I referenced seems to imply that those species don't exist at room temperature. I am playing an old game that teachers deploy. What you probably meant to say is that two P₂ molecules are unstable with respect to P₄ because 6 P-P bonds are "better" than two P≡P bonds. But if kept dilute, however, P₂ is happy - what can it do? Lots of stuff is like that. For nerds like me, this semantic angle gives us a chance to say "gotcha". Regarding Article Length

Hi there, I've been meaning to write to thank you for all your help with my students' articles! And thanks too for this message. I gave them the word count as a way of instilling a certain level of equity among students in my class, but I certainly wasn't going to penalize them for going over the limit (I was more concerned about people not doing enough; i.e. working under the limit). The issue you raise is one that probably should be discussed with Wikipedia's Global Education Program people, however, since in most conventional class assignments there is a word limit. I'll be sure to do so. We instructors should be made aware of the policy you refer to (I didn't know about it and it was not part of our orientation), and figure out a way to achieve the equity we need to in terms of grading while adhering to Wikipedia's policies. I didn't think about the equity issue, but now I see how it could be a problem. Can't think of many solutions, though, except teachers taking the "quality over quantity" approach, with only a lower limit on length.

Yes it does. Right in the Title "United States war crimes" it does not state "alleged war crimes" or anything that would denote it as anything other than fact. As I read more of the article. I can see this is almost entirely POV driven and it has no place here. Unless a lot of changes are not taken I will have to ask for it deletion. I do not want to be the bad guy here. Showing countries war crimes is something that should be done. Look, I promise to do what I can to add the proper templates and stuff, as you requested, but I'm just not very good at coding. Thanks for helping me out though - I intend to start writing new articles on more lung cancer variants beginning at the end of May, probably. It was just a minor qualm—your articles are very well written. All that's required is to add {{WikiProject Medicine}} to the talk page. Since you seem to write a lot of articles about lung cancers, you can use {{WikiProject Medicine|pulmonology=yes}} to mark them as related to pulmonology. Basically it just helps the WikiProject to organize better, assessing articles within their scope and such.

The information below is provided to ensure that your new role as an Online Ambassador is a successful one. There are tasks listed, as well as reading material. Please make sure to complete the actions presented below, as quickly as possible.

The Wikipedia Education Program is a relatively new program that is continuing to experience change and transition. Our goal is to be better than we were yesterday. For this reason, please remember to check the information and talk pages of the United States Education Program and the Wikipedia Ambassador Program often. If you have any questions, please contact one of your fellow Ambassadors or one of the members of the Ambassador Steering Committee.

Please complete the following, as soon as possible

1. Add your username to the official list of Online Ambassadors;
2. Add a profile for yourself here; and
3. Read and review the Wikipedia Ambassadors Principles;
4. Read the United States Education Program's Memorandum of Understanding (provides list of current courses); and
5. Select one (or more) of the courses from the MOU and add your name to their Online Ambassador slot.
6. Sign up for the Wikipedia Ambassador Program announcements email list.

Support Structure

Online Ambassadors serve as a vital link in the Wikipedia Education Program, assisting new student editors transition into the Wikipedia editing community. They serve in a leadership role alongside the course instructor; local Campus Ambassador(s), who work with the class in person; and the Regional Ambassador, who checks in periodically with the pod to make sure everything is going well. Together, the instructor, Campus Ambassador, Regional Ambassador, and Online Ambassador encompass the course "pod".

The pod is the term we use to refer to the group of individuals that work together to help the students in a particular course successfully contribute to Wikipedia. A prototypical pod might look something like this:

• A professor or course instructor who is fairly new to Wikipedia, leading a class of 20–30 students, who have been assigned to make significant contributions to new or existing articles related to the course subject.
• Two Campus Ambassadors, one of whom is an experienced Wikipedian and one of whom is new to the encyclopedia. The Campus Ambassadors are provided with training to learn the basic policies and guidelines of Wikipedia and how to help students contribute effectively.
• Two Online Ambassadors, one of whom is a moderately experienced Wikipedian, while the other is very experienced. Both have knowledge of community policies and guidelines and are available to provide editing guidance, answer questions, and assistance navigating the community. When needed, Online Ambassadors are also available for one-on-one mentorship.
• One Regional Ambassador, a moderately experienced Wikipedian who coordinates assistance and support for universities and courses based on a large geographical region.

Role and Responsibilities

The list of the responsibilities of the Online Ambassador are presented in the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). In essence, the role of the Online Ambassador includes:

1. Helping students in your class(es) when they ask for it and answer their questions;
2. Serve as a liaison between the professor/student and the community;
3. In general, keep an eye out for the students and professors and help them navigate the community;
4. Helping students get feedback on their work (whether from you or other editors with an interest in or knowledge of the subject area)
5. Be a good example for students, modeling good faith communication and editing practices; and
6. Communicating regularly with the other members of your pod regarding the progress of the student, along with any issues that come up.

Online Ambassadors can also assist students that are outside of their pod. Generally, Online Ambassadors represent the Ambassador Program and provide assistance for students whenever encountered. While feedback on the style and formatting of student articles is essential, assistance may also be needed to review the articles substance and content. When needed, the Online Ambassador may request the assistance of WikiProjects that focus on technical issues presented in student articles.

Communication Channels

There are four main places for news, updates, and discussion about Wikipedia Ambassadors and the Wikipedia Education Program:

1. Wikipedia talk:Ambassadors
2. Wikipedia talk:United States Education Program
3. The Wikipedia Ambassador Program announcements list. This is a low-traffic email list that is used for significant announcements that are relevant to the whole program. Please sign up as soon as you get a chance.
4. Internet Relay Chat (IRC). If you use IRC, please consider adding #wikipedia-en-ambassadors and #wikipedia-en-classroom to your channel lineup. The latter is the main help channel for the program, where students and instructors seek live help.

Future communication tools are being developed. Newsletters about the program or messages for Online Ambassadors may occasionally be delivered to your talk page. If you have any questions, please let me know.
