Hello Hurricanehink, and welcome to the 2014 WikiCup! Your submission page can be found here. The competition will begin at midnight tonight (UTC). To explain those incidents: The deal with Sharkguy05 is all my fault. I continually have problems with people touching the tornado tables after I have done NCDC updates, which I know is completely WP:OWN and I have been working on that (I agree, that would be a big problem with !voters during an adminship request). The incident with TAWX is that he failed to provide evidence that the local NWS offices are the authors of the NCDC storm entries. I admit that I got a little heated, but, as you acknowledged, I did start discussion with him after that. That is something else I need to work on. Anyway, thanks for the review! Actually 190 he undid your edit because he felt it was a boring way to open the lead, which was kind of explained in the edit summary. It wasn't for no reason. Your edit summary said "say what it was before saying what it did", but that the project long ago agreed not to start articles that way. Call my edit summary "fuckwitted" if you want, but I stand by it. The opener was boring the way you changed it, and right now, it doesn't help anyone who reads the article. Obviously Hurricane Keith was a hurricane in a hurricane season. There have been hundreds of other tropical storms or hurricanes in various seasons. That means nothing. Hey there! Just addressing a few notes in your review.

  • Source has been added for recording locations
  • "is" changed to "was"
  • Most album articles don't typically need a source for the release date, but if it's necessary, there are multiple sources within the article that confirm the release date of September 27.
  • "The band's studio autonomy" was a phrase I culled from a few sources that essentially amounts to how they function as a unit (which was, as detailed in the article, not well during this time). I've left it as is for now.
  • "Connect on the same scale" means commercially - it did not sell as well as prior releases by the band.
  • I've changed "fatal" to "near-fatal," as others died in the crash and two survived
  • I suppose one could mention where the crash happened in the first paragraph of "Background," but it already runs a tad long and it isn't necessary to understand the severity of the events and its impact on the band.
  • Changed "found out via the TV news" to "learned of the crash via the TV news" to be more clear
  • Quote isn't needed, but I'd like to keep it, as it clarifies why exactly he mailed him the photograph. I've cut "It was a good moment to put the shit aside," however.
  • Ah yes, the Blinkumentary. It was scrapped, so I've changed the article accordingly.
  • I suppose you could add that they're working on a new record, but there isn't much yet to report on that subject so I've left it as is.

WikiCup 2014 January newsletter

The 2014 WikiCup is off to a flying start, with, at time of writing, 138 participants. The is the largest number of participants we have seen since 2010. If you are yet to join the competition, don't worry- the judges have agreed to keep the signups open for a few more days. By a wide margin, our current leader is newcomer Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions), whose set of 14 featured pictures, the first FPs of the competition, was worth 490 points. Here are some more noteworthy scorers:

Featured articles, featured lists, featured topics and featured portals are yet to play a part in the competition. The judges have removed a number of submissions which were deemed ineligible. Typically, we aim to see work on a project, followed by a nomination, followed by promotion, this year. We apologise for any disappointment caused by our strict enforcement this year; we're aiming to keep the competition as fair as possible.

Wikipedians interested in friendly competition may be interested to take part in The Core Contest; unlike the WikiCup, The Core Contest is not about audited content, but, like the WikiCup, it is about article improvement; specifically, The Core Contest is about contribution to some of Wikipedia's most important article. Of course, any work done for The Core Contest, if it leads to a DYK, GA or FA, can earn WikiCup points.

Hurricane Isabel Source problem

I'm translating your wonderful work Hurricane Isabel to Chinese Wikipedia, but so far I have found a problem at source:

The original link is dead almost two years ago, but I try to find it at web archive, the earlist capture is at May 11th, 2008, with another 3 captures later. But the problem is: this source is not what's should be, this is not the "Event Report for Virginia", actually is for California, some strong wind begin at Febuary 3rd, 2004 2:00 PM PST.

And I have already check the source at another article Effects of Hurricane Isabel in Virginia, also had same problem.

WikiCup 2014 February newsletter

And so ends the most competitive first round we have ever seen, with 38 points required to qualify for round 2. Last year, 19 points secured a place; before that, 11 (2012) or 8 (2011) were enough. This is both a blessing and a curse. While it shows the vigourous good health of the competition, it also means that we have already lost many worthy competitors. Our top three scorers were:

  1. Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions), a WikiCup newcomer whose high-quality scans of rare banknotes represent an unusual, interesting and valuable contribution to Wikipedia. Most of Godot's points this round have come from a large set of pictures used in Treasury Note (1890–91).
  2. Oh, better far to live and die / Under the brave black flag I fly... Adam Cuerden (submissions), a WikiCup veteran and a finalist last year, Adam is also a featured picture specialist, focusing on the restoration of historical images. This month's promotions have included a carefully restored set of artist William Russell Flint's work.
  3. United States WikiRedactor (submissions), another WikiCup newcomer. WikiRedactor has claimed points for good article reviews and good articles relating to pop music, many of which were awarded bonus points. Articles include Sky Ferreira, Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus and "Wrecking Ball" (Miley Cyrus song).

After such a competitive first round, expect the second round to also be fiercely fought. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 1 but before the start of round 2 can be claimed in round 2, but please do not update your submission page until March (UTC). Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points equally.

I just saw your question for Dr. Roth, and I would like to say that I know someone who is working on the 1954-1969 reanalysis period, but, as with all work in the reanalysis, I am obliged not to discuss preliminary changes until the data are officially released by HURDAT. The person who is working on 1954-1969 is writing his thesis paper on this period, and it should be interesting once it's made public (if indeed it gets peer reviewed and published). As an aside, the 1946-1950 reanalysis just came out today; I was one of the people who helped renalayze the 1947 Fort Lauderdale hurricane, of which I am very proud, but also for which I appreciate the efforts of Donna Strahan (the researcher who originally analyzed the storm with Dr. Landsea), Andrew Hagen (whose paper has been posted around here) and Dr. Landsea. Check out the results at HURDAT. King's (1950) now a Category 4 in Miami, by the way. CapeVerdeWave (talk) 02:32, 25 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I think his paper goes up to 1969, but I'm NOT 100 percent sure. Feel free to ask him directly; don't quote me. Dr. Landsea and/or Andrew Hagen told me that the data (meaning all the reanalysis stuff) would be out this week, so I assume that the metadata will be up shortly. I don't have the software to update the tracks, but someone should. I can give you a rundown of the highlights from the latest HURDAT: between 1945 and 1950, South Florida was hit by five Category 4s in 1945, 1947, 1948, 1949, and 1950, including three new ones (a storm in September 1948, the August 1949 hurricane, and King in 1950). In this period, Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, and Palm Beach were hit directly by majors—all Category 4s—which is amazing considering the low frequency of Category 4 or 5 hits. Hurricane Dog of 1950 is obviously no longer a Category 5—a lot of the storms in 1950 were knocked down intensity wise, so that season is less impressive than it first appeared. A new storm, Mike, was also found in 1950 that was originally included in the Air Weather summary but for some reason was left off in the best track (no one knows why). A bunch of other new storms were found in every or almost every year in the 1946–1950 period, but no new hurricanes, I think. CapeVerdeWave (talk) 02:48, 25 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

A quick update as we are half way through round two of this year's competition. WikiCup newcomer Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions) (Pool E) leads, having produced a massive set of featured pictures for Silver certificate (United States), an article also brought to featured list status. Former finalist Oh, better far to live and die / Under the brave black flag I fly... Adam Cuerden (submissions) (Pool G) is in second, which he owes mostly to his work with historical images, including a number of images from Urania's Mirror, an article also brought to good status. 2010 champion (Pool C) is third overall, thanks to contributions relating to naval history, including the newly featured Japanese battleship Nagato. Rhodesia Cliftonian (submissions), who currently leads Pool A and is sixth overall, takes the title for the highest scoring individual article of the competition so far, with the top importance featured article Ian Smith.

With 26 people having already scored over 100 points, it is likely that well over 100 points will be needed to secure a place in round 3. Recent years have required 123 (2013), 65 (2012), 41 (2011) and 100 (2010). Remember that only 64 will progress to round 3 at the end of April. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page; if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points equally. WikiCup 2014 April newsletter

Round 3 of the 2014 WikiCup has just begun; 32 competitors remain. Pool G's Oh, better far to live and die / Under the brave black flag I fly... Adam Cuerden (submissions) was Round 2's highest scorer, with a large number of featured picture credits. In March/April, he restored star charts from Urania's Mirror, lithographs of various warships (such as SMS Gefion) and assorted other historical media. Second overall was Pool E's Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions), whose featured list Silver certificate (United States) contains dozens of scans of banknotes recently promoted to featured picture status. Third was Pool G's United States ChrisGualtieri (submissions) who has produced a large number of good articles, many, including Falkner Island, on Connecticut-related topics. Other successful participants included Rhodesia Cliftonian (submissions), who saw three articles (including the top-importance Ian Smith) through featured article candidacies, and Washington, D.C. Caponer (submissions), who saw three lists (including the beautifully-illustrated list of plantations in West Virginia) through featured list candidacies. I found out in the PAGASA's Typhoon2000 log (website: http://www.typhoon2000.ph/season05-3.htm) that there is a storm between Typhoon Kiko and Labuyo (Typhoons Khanun and Damrey).
