Inline formulas

Hi Hulten,

Thanks for your improvement to the relativistic formulas at Newton's laws of motion. I reverted two small parts of your edit, however, because the manual of style for mathematics discourages the use of the large Latex equations for formulas that appear in the text. For simple formulas, it is preferable to type them inline in normal size text, or if you use Latex, to put the equation on its own line and indent it. Edit to Carbon Cycle page

Hi Hulten,

Thanks for your improvements of the carbon cycle page. I've modified your edit slightly and would like to hear your opinion on my edit, since I'm not an expert on the oceanic carbon cycle as you are ;) This is the issue I edited:

1. I don't understand the causal relationship between the DIC in the deep layer being only 15% than in the surface layer and having sufficient DIC in the surface layer for phytoplankton. I see your citation on the 15% and wouldn't want to change that part, but the wording you've got in the sentence leads me to think that you're wanting to say that if the balance of DIC in the surface / deep layers were different, there wouldn't be enough DIC for phytoplankton. Because that's unclear, I've removed that portion. If we do include that statement in the article, it would be nice if that were a little bit more clear. IF the explanation is detailed, we could consider moving it to the (as yet unfinished) oceanic carbon cycle. What do you think?

Dear Daniel,

Indeed, I was not clear on this. I certainly did not want to say that the removal of the vertical gradient (the 15% difference) of [DIC] would mean that there would not be enough DIC for phytoplankton. I actually wanted to note the following. Since there is generally still 85% of DIC concentration in the surface ocean compared with deep ocean, DIC in the surface is never depleted, so there is always enough DIC available.

It is good that you removed this and a better explanation should indeed be put on oceanic carbon cycle. However, you combined my and the aforewritten sentence in such a way that the resulting sentence is not true. The deep ocean does contain much more DIC than the surface ocean, as originally written. However, the DIC concentration is only 15% higher in the deep ocean. This is of course because of the much larger volume of the deep ocean compared with the surface ocean. I am not sure which of these facts is more important. This may depend on the timescales (smallish for surface, large of deep ocean).

Alternatively, our edits may both be reverted to the previous version and we should then explain more on oceanic carbon cycle.

Dear Hulten,

Thanks for the feedback. Now I understand your edit better. I'll rework the sentence as soon as I come to it to reflect both of those facts. It makes a lot more sense now that I get what you mean better. I'm not sure if I'll get around to it today, but the next edit should modify the section to be correct.

In the following weeks I hope to get around to turning the oceanic carbon cycle more into an article than a collection of unedited facts and I'm grateful for every bit of help I can get, so please feel free to join in on the editing if you've got the time :) Have a nice weekend!

Hello Hulten,

I decided to move the fact about the deep ocean's DIC concentration being only 15% higher to oceanic carbon cycle and reverting the edits. If you have time and are in the mood, you're more than welcome to help out on fixing up that article - I would like it to go into a bit more depth and to have more structure than it currently does, but at the moment I can only work on it very sporadically.
