H5N1 is a subtype of the virus species Influenzavirus A that causes a disease discussed here: Transmission and infection of H5N1 and is currently infecting birds worldwide as discussed here: Global spread of H5N1 and is a current pandemic threat as discussed here: Influenza pandemic as is summarized in the H5N1 box on the H5N1 article pages. People come to these H5N1/avian flu/flu articles with all manner of misconceptions, and it has been hard to be clear, encyclopedia, and nonredundant in successfully communicating to the intended readers. For exapmle, just a bit ago, we had talk on our talk page that indicated people were misreading the whole global spread of H5N1 as a spread in humans. It is a spread in birds. That category is reserved for major vandals who have vandalised repetitavely under multiple usernames or IP addresses, not individual usernames. If you want to report this user for vandalism, what you should do instead is report him to either Wikipedia:Requests for investigation, or Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism. Requests For Adminship Nomination

Hello. I came across your user page, and couldn't help but noticing that you have over 4000 edits, and yet you're not an administrator. I read some of your old talk messages, and notcied that you have been asked about becoming an admin before. Well, I was wondering if you were still interested in becoming one, and I am eager to give my first nomination. Although I do have a far less edit count than you, I have been here a while and the majority of my edits are in the namespace. I looked over your edits and how much you've helped people, and think that you would be perfect. One thing I'm skeptical about is that you have only a small amount of your overall edits in the namespace, but if you review the community standards for becoming an admin, I have a strong feeling that you could be accepted. Pic of the day

As of a week ago, I filled the pic of the day to a month in advance. This was to assist the person in charge of that department. Since then, the buffer has been rapidly slipping away. They are posted in the order they achieved featured picture status as displayed on Wikipedia:Featured pictures thumbs 05, reading from the bottom right corner to the left. The picture for April 18th is "Crepuscular ray sunset", the 19th's is "Remembrance poppy", the 20th's is "The Three Sisters", etc. (There was another schedule formula before the 18th, in which Thumbs 02 was used on M/W/F, which is what to fall back on if new featured pics run out, which will happen eventually if they don't keep up to promoting 7 pics to featured status each week). April 15th's picture is "Monarch butterflies. --Go for it! 00:27, 26 March 2006 (UTC)

There are 4 versions of pic of the day. You can see their slots from the monthly archive pages. Each version has a different format. I generally prep all the slots except for the "column" version, since that has no additional code (you just take code out for that one). Particular pics can also have different formatting (horizonal pics get 600 width, while vertical ones get 450). Square pics is whatever width works best. Also, you generally edit the text down to equal or less than the height of the pic, going over that only when absolutely necessary to cover the topic. Your RfA and one other

It looks like your RfA is a slam dunk. I wonder if you would consider supporting one that is razor thin? AzaToth's RfA looks like it's going to come down to a vote or two and then discretion from a bureaucrat. I've never campaigned for another RfA before, but I feel compelled to on this one because of the unique contribution he makes and his legitimate (in my opinion) need for admin tools. Because his focus has not been in the main article space (similar to you, although more so in his case) many people are opposing based almost entirely on that criteria. Where did you find that code?

I installed the code for "tomorrow's pic of the day" as per your suggestion. Good one. By the way, where did you find that, and is there any more? I tried +2, etc., and those don't work, but -1 works (though -2, -3, etc. don't work). Have you taken a look at the code? It's humongous!

Hey guys. I saw this discussion pop up on the 'what links here' for template:day+1. Sorry about the size of the code - it pretty much has to be 369 lines long as it'd be incomprehensible if all bunched together. Each line could be alot shorter if just doing 'current day +/- 1' (as it did originally), but I added in the extra info to allow it to cycle through any set of date ordered pages. As to 'day+2'... you could do {{day+1|{{day+1}}}}, but most of the time I think the 'cycling' effect I was talking about should be sufficient. See the 'tip of the day' pages for April 20, April 21, and April 22 for an example of this 'cycling' in action. Do you think you can make a variant of this template, maybe {{day+1 underscore}}, that gives the date with an underscore to make it compatible with links? I try to have link to edit tommorow's POTD and I get this: 23,_2025&action=edit Edit because the template includes a space. If you get me started, I'll even put in the underscores where they are needed. Shouldn't you be able to copy and paste the data from the regular template and start from there? I added an extra parameter '4' which allows a spacing character (such as '_') to be specified.

Picture of the Day

Hi HtH,

I reverted your edit to Wikipedia:Picture of the day because I don't think we want to preempt the next day's POTD there. However now POTD is on the Main Page, the idea of having convenient access to the MainPage version is a good one. The best idea might be to include previews of the MainPage formatted version on the monthly archive pages such as Wikipedia:Picture_of_the_day/March_2006. In practice the POTD archive pages are the main working pages for lining up POTD entries. The down side is that might make those pages somewhat cumbersome.

Other options might be to switch the previewed format on the POTD archive to just show the MainPage layout, or to set up a parallel archive at say Wikipedia:Picture_of_the_day/Main_Page/March_2006 for the MainPage layout. -- Solipsist 22:16, 26 March 2006 (UTC)

Help menu should be centralized

I'm not sure why you moved the menu off its page of focus. Though it really should remain centralized. As a template, only more advanced users can be involved in its development and maintenance, and it is an element of Wikipedia which affects everyone. Also, it's much easier to keep track of and discuss from a centralized location. This issue is also tied-in with the icons, and Lethe seems to be fanatically opposed to them.

From your userpage: ...other than obvious vadals, so there should be no good-faith petitions for unblocking.... If you block usernames the autoblock can kick in, possibly banning legitimate users who use the same IP. Having the barnometer and userboxes side-by-side, in addition to the leftnav, exceeds 800px. If you move the barnometer elsewhere (e.g. below the featured pict, or somewhere below the userboxes), that would help resolve this issue. Also, where you have "Main Page redesign · Tip of the day · ..." all on one line, it causes scrolling. If you remove the date or put it elsewhere, the scrolling would go away. DYK - pictured

It is unnecessary to mention "pictured" for DYK or FA. For FA, it is fairly obvious. For DYK, it is always the first suggestion that is pictured. Unlike ITN which follows the recency of news and "on this day" which follows chronology, DYK doesn't have a set order and hence, we always put the DYK suggestion with the picture as the first entry. --Gurubrahma 05:27, 5 April 2006 (UTC)

POTD text edit

Hi, just a small heads-up that I edited the text to go with Wikipedia:Picture of the day/April 28, 2006. The primary current in a transformer does not induce a current in the other winding(s); rather, it creates a magnetic flux in the core which is what induces a voltage in the windings. Community Portal colors

• I just noticed User:HereToHelp/sandbox. I think it's a step in the right direction. The lighter colors are much better, though the volume of information is still overwhelming. Announcements/New featured pages

I noticed you removed 2 FPs from Template:Announcements/New featured pages, the pictures you removed were just recently added. Were they added in the wrong spot? -Ravedave 14:24, 13 April 2006 (UTC)

Oh, sorry. If they were newer than the ones at the top, yes they were in the wrong spot. But the list seemed long, so I was bold and shortened it. On the other hand, we're moving a lot of images up and it's remotely possible that they had so many above them even after being featured just days ago.

Suggest you revise and extend after seeing

Diff makes it clear you object to help change (I can guess) At least 'some'... see template talk:welcome (last sect), and This , if there is a 'problem'.

• As you can see from my template talk post, I may be in better place to appreciate the real problem faced by the new newbie (I guess I'm a retread or somesuch) <G>
  • Dang - I lost my cut buffer! Arrrg- why doesn't windows have multiple buffers! or WikiP? Hate that!
• Besides, the guidelines say to act 'boldly' — something probably copied off a cereal box from the 1960's when I was but a wee lad.

I'm amazed the Help page change still stands! Since you noticed at least, I'll take that as a good sign.

• Consider the difference in the format layout, one horizontal, one using a lot of verticle. I seem to recall seeing a technique (Template:MBTA seems to incorporate it), where you could build the table 'naturally' as if on paper left to right. (btw- fill in your tz!)

MediaWiki Error

Hey. Hope you've been enjoying the adminship. Like I said, I would come to you if I needed something done that required a sysop. That said, I think I've come across a minor mistake in the MediaWiki software that needs correction. When I used Special:Export to export a page, I noticed in the text it said "You can export the text and editing history of a particular page or set of pages wrapped in some XML. In the future, this may then be imported into another wiki running MediaWiki software, although there is no support for this feature in the current version." The underlined text is incorrect, because admins can use Special:Import to import pages. You can notice in the history that that text was added in 2003, when Wikipedia used an older version of MediaWiki. I think that the text should be changed to something like "Administrators can then import pages on other wikis running the MediaWiki software." or something of that sort. At this critical junction (we just finished one thing and should start on the next, we have a number of new possibilites open:

• Redo the CBB (quick, easy, shouldn't take that long);
• Write that policy and get it approved (I currently have a draft);
• Redo Wikipedia:Featured content (in either gold and black or Main Page style);
• Something else you may have in mind? Or do we go our separate ways?

• I'd be into re-evaluating the CBB. I was thinking about those [show/hide] tags, and tried to find one that defaults to show, but that remembers if you hide it. So that people could: eg. hide the CBB box and get the "To do lists" section at the top whenever they load the CP. Or hide the "Editorial departments" section to get a shorter page. I looked at {{hidden}} (and hiddenbegin/hiddenend), but couldnt find anything that mentioned a default option of Not-Hidden. Maybe you can find something, or know whom to ask?

• I'm interested in that policy, and will look/contribute/feedback when i have time soon.

• I'm not really into the Featured Contents redesign. I'm not very familiar with that project, so apart from wanting to compact&clarify it, I have no experience to back up opinions. I also think we should let the aesthetics of our 2 HUGE! redesigns settle slowly into collective unconscience, before trying to overhaul much more. (I may change on this in a few weeks, but not immdiately). Plus the main WP:FA maintainer(raul654) is redesigning WP:FA right now. (but, see below)

• The Help:Contents (and Help:Help) systems need to be cleaned. That's the big one. I want to leave that for last please! (for when i know the code and content better). I'd be into slowly discussing options somewhere though.

Instead I'm planning on planting aesthetic seeds elsewhere, by cleaning/clarifying up the content of the in-depth help pages, and also through Wikipedia:Colours and related. I want to try to work out why we're using tables everywhere for layout, when the rest of the world is converting to CSS.

We could probably suggest a new colour scheme for the FA/FC/etc to use. I'm planning on expanding the table on the WP:COLOUR talkpage, with a self-consistent palette, that people can pick anything from.
