This does not bother me at all however you really do not want someone like me to help you here. I am not a particularly active member of this project & such activity as I do do here is in very restricted areas. I work almost solely on disruptive editing often with cross wiki implications and deal mostly with conflict of interest issues & excessive external linkage. You would do much better to find someone with far more general knowledge. Equally - given you are likely to be an admin on Commons soon - it might be as well to focus there for a while rather than be overstretched? Prod Removal

Thanks for the heads up! I caught that myself too. My original problem was that the initial article creation (here) appeared to be a straight copy and paste of a journal article. However, since then, the author has cleaned it up and added references. I'm OK with the article remaining now, as it just needs the normal cleanup that a lot of WP articles do. I hate this sort :) The problem here is that by blocking the whole domain there will be one link that is genuinely quite valid & a storm will arise! I would watch that user very very carefully. Not sure quite what happened but I would have deleted the page as it was when you tagged it & probably blocked the user (I am still quite tempted). If you do get problems with users removing tags that you feel are correct you can always warn them (plenty of tags here). I have no idea how you warned yourself I'm afraid, I don't know much about the available tools etc. Bear in mind I'm not really a regular here. If I saw that page on Commons or Meta I would delete it without a thought (I'd probably block the user too) but they do see some things differently here. You'd be better finding a more "en wp" admin really. I'd certainly watch the contributions as I think it is likely there will be more disruptive editing - if there is then seek a block. Please advise

I firstly wish to apologise for the tone of the comments attached to the ‘undo’ I did this morning – I was frustrated as I am new and I even though I am a fast learner, there appears to be so many opinions and contradictions of what is acceptable. I had added the section on the upcoming event as it had already been published in the newspaper – thus confirmed and referenced. It was initially removed and constructively edited and replaced by a very experienced contributer, so I was frustrated when it was removed rather than challenged or improved. But my issue remains the same – many other sites refer to upcoming events such as Glastonbury 2008 festival to name one of thousands – so why what I added was any different ? Hi Herbythyme. I note you removed a section from the above article, which I had previously removed, but then reworded and tidied up before re-inserting it. Wikipedia:Future event does advise tabular or list form for scheduled events, but I feel a little leeway is fair compared with the likes of Glastonbury Festival 2008. Thanks for this. I just see this show as substantively different to something such as Glastonbury (which might almost be termed a world event). Well, I am very discouraged with Wikipedia. I had read lots of negative articles about it. But, since I was on vacation I thought I would try to edit. I read some of the Help sections, looked around, and started to edit. But, then I get accused of Conflict of Interest. I thought I was making good quality edits. But, I guess not.

I have never even been to Fortuna, California. I chose this user name for two reasons:

1) Fortuna is Spanish for "Fortune", and I wanted the "Best Of" fortune.

2) My late uncle worked in Fortuna for 40 years, and since I had never made it there, I wanted to learn more about the city, and as kind of a tribute to him, pass some of that on to the Fortuna article, and maybe the surrounding area in Humboldt County.

I am guessing that there is so much vandalism on here that good contributors and administrators, maybe unconsciously, start assuming "bad faith", because they are bombarded with negative edits. Maybe these veteran contributors and administrators should look through the edits by new users, to see what they are actually doing, before assuming certain things, 1) based on the user name, and 2) based the articles edited. My cousins name is Sydney, and haven forbid he edit the Sydney article.

Well, again, I thought I was making quality changes here, but I guess not. In looking through hundreds of articles here on Wikipedia, I see thousands of errors, inconsistent formatting, poor English, spelling, grammar, etc. And even though mine may not be the best, it is better than a lot of contributors here. There are a ton of crappy edits here. I am guessing that most people don't read any of the tutorials before they begin to edit. They just start adding their own unique formatting and layout. If you actually study education, you will find that people can learn better if there is some consistency in the layout. What if you bought a set of Encyclopedia Britannica and all of the articles had a difference format? This confuses the reader and deters their ability to learn. It is easier to learn about "x" if you don't have to learn about how to decipher the information because of the presentation.

External Links being taken off.

Dear Herbythyme,

I have noticed all of the editing to external links have been taken off of Wiki pages. The external links are all on designers and architects in which have written on in our very notable magazine Dwell. I am more than certain that these designers would want links to their articles. Are we not suppose to add credible article links on these pages? I have read the WP:EI and WP:COI and am confident that I am following the rules. I am linking to different articles, which are completely unbiased and gives the user more qualitative information and images about that particular designer or architect that we published in our magazine Please advise.

Hello. You deleted last friday the page linked to my account, under the reason of "Blatant advertisment" which, at this point, was. I am actually new on wikipedia and lost in all the tutorial to make a proper informative (therefore not really an advertisment) article on my company, just like so many on them, giving fact and figures, as well as the history (just take the easy example of the article on Microsoft). I would appreciate if you can give me clue of how to make it so that it is in complying with the rules of Wikipedia. I also have been trying to upload the Logo of the company on Commons, but it was deleted as the moderator doubted I had the copyright on it. How can I add it then to my article? Thanks in advance. Thanks for the time you took to answer my previous message. I was actually wondering how measurable is the "notability" through google, as when I enter the name, I still get over 36000 hits. Also, I am not sure I understand what you mean about licensing of the Logo. Under what conditions would I be allowed to upload and display mine? I guess that the conflict of interest point is also in order to limit the advertisement, but I must say, it would have been easy for me to ask a friend or any person who is not involved to put the article online. My intention is definitely not to sell the product of the company on wikipedia, but to give a history and description of the company, like I have seen existing articles for a lot of companies already. I hope you've checkedout the site pamukkalehotels.com and you will see it has a lot of INFORMATION about Pamukkale and Hierapolis and it has pictures and videos of the most beautiful places out there, it's absolutely not a tourist directory. Pamukkale.com was listed throughout a lot of wikipedia versions since last year, but recently this domain has changed owners and the ORIGINAL site is transferred to pamukkalehotels.com, that's the only thing i want to change. I would like to know why are you desagree, for a external links~ about Hugues de Payns Museum in differents languages. When I go in the external links about museum (in the article), the links give "bad" informations (open/close of museum....).

In the description (in your article), when can see in the notes, the book of M. Thierry Leroy,and the origine of existence of museum is T. Leroy and friends of him. the "webmestre" of external links I purpose, is T. Leroy the link isn't tourist directory but an "official website".

Thanks for the message. Wikipedia is an encyclopaedia and so does not really want external links. If the information on a page is wrong you should change it not place an external link.

When links are placed on a number of Wikis they are reported centrally (here is the report)). Such activity is not wanted and I see the site has now been blacklisted by someone else.

Herby noted this discussion on my talkpage, I'll give my thoughs here as well. If I see the link, then indeed, it may be a good external link on the fr wiki, but hardly here or on, e.g., cs.wikipedia. And, IMHO, fails WP:EL here (and we are not a linkfarm, we are an encyclopedia). Persistent behaviour like in the history here (note: using different IPs) does show that you want to discuss with other editors, but rather chooses to push the link. That gives us as only resort to blacklist it. You can now defend his behaviour, and try to get established, uninvolved editors to tell us that the link is of interest on this, or other projects, and therefor, I endorse blacklisting for now. Energy Art Movement

I would like an explanation for why my link to the Energy Art Movement has been deleted on the Art Manifesto page. I have read your usual responses about unwanted external links, but that simply doesn't apply here. The page has a separate section for manifestos found on the internet, and thus my link belongs there. I know that Wikipedia is full of external links meant to advertise, but that is not what I intended. Our organization is non-profit, so COI doesn't apply either. Before deleting a link, it would be nice if you kept in mind the informative nature of the encyclopedia, especially if a contributor follows the rules. Capuchin Classics

I see no notability and I can't find any from my couch using Google! It's a recently founded company that prints old books as far as I can tell all by non-living authors and many already out of copyright. So it's not even as though they have anything to do with finding or nurturing great talent. The Guardian review is of the book not the publishing house. That one's less obvious to me. I'd happily bet money on a promotional motive for the original editor but there are 3 pieces of national coverage - which is way more than many organizations have. They're fairly poor quality pieces from an encyclopedic perspective but the org has managed to convince some biggish magazines that they're worthy of coverage so the content is poor but notability is possibly satisfied. Deletion?

Why did you delete my user page, citing "advertisement" when I was posting my information? I am not a spokesperson for a product or anything, that was just my personal information. The administrator whom placed the semi-protection on the page did not have a problem with it, so why did you delete it without asking me to change the wording or something first? I WILL reinstate the page perhaps in a more "Herbythyme"-friendly manner later, but I just want to know the thought-process behind deleting a page that an administrator was OK with?!

In addition to that, look at the history of my page, and you will see that I am dealing with a frequent vandal whom is also showing some signs of stalking (refer to the comment on my talk page, which was deleted). It took me a while to get that protection placed on my page, and now its back to square one, and this person will probably deface my page again thanks to you, and if they show any more signs of cyberstalking then I will probably have to hire a lawyer and the such to protect myself against a possible crazy person. Again, why?

On August 21 you blocked User:86.96.228.87 and refused his request to unblock. On August 22 User:86.96.228.87 is active again in a most dubious way. No, it wasn't Herbythyme, I moved your comment to its own section just to make it more visible as it didn't appear to be directly connected to the section where it was originally added. Standard practice is to start new discussions at the bottom of a talk page with its own section. From Herbythyme's recent edits, it appears that he hasn't been active for a few hours now - so it could be a while before you see a reply.

I don't know the details of the edits you're asking about and I didn't see a ban on the account that it appeared you were asking about ... but as a general place to start on why external links are most frequently removed, take a look at WP:ELNO and WP:NOT#REPOSITORY.

Incidentally, if there was a ban, then you should wait for that ban to expire rather than creating a new account - using multiple accounts to get around a ban is called sock puppetry and is considered a form of disruption which could result in further bans. --- Barek (talk • contribs) - 20:44, 22 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Starry Night Lights page deletion

Hi Herby

I was working with another administrator regarding my site. I'd made a number of modifications, additions... added citations and references. When I got in the office a short while ago, I saw that you'd deleted my page. I understand your role, but don't feel your action was justified. Just because I have a company that sells products does not mean that I am unfit for inclusion on wikipedia. My company, Starry Night Lights is unique in its focus on providing night sky friendly lighting. I made considerable modifications to try to remove anything salesy or marketish from the tone. I tried to simply mention the company, why and when it was founded, and briefly discuss its mission. I did not display specific products, or links to products. I could find dozens of examples of similar companies on wikipedia in just minutes. For that matter... what make any company wiki-notable? IBM or Dell computers? They manufacture and sell computers and equipment. EBay... they don't manufacture anything... they're hardcore sales. I thought I did a pretty decent job of being objective and referencing related wiki pages (dark sky movement, international dark sky association, etc) I was willing to make additional changes... add citations... references... etc. I feel that my company is notable. Starry Night Lights has been discussed in the NY Times, High Country News, Astronomy Magazine, Sky and Telescope Magazine, numerous green building and green lifestyle blogs. These are significant and respectable source. What my company is doing is significant. Many of these same for profit businesses have wiki pages. I felt compelled to offer better content because of the comments of the first administrator who flagged my site. I think the content was improved because of his scrutiny and his comments. However, I feel that you swooped in and deleted my page unfairly and without any word to me. Please explain your actions more thoroughly. Please let me know how my page was so different and inferior to other companies listed on wikipedia. Thanks for your time.

Copyright Infringement

Hello Herby, You deleted an article posted about me. It is not copyright infringement, if I am the owner of the copyright, and I grant permission to the poster, and to Wikipedia to post the content from the biography profile of my web site.

It is not an advertisement. It was simply my BIO info -- just like many other authors who have biography profiles in Wikipedia.

It was nice to see my information, and then not so much, when it disappeared. I would prefer to have to reposted. Deletion of eJay?

I dont get it, the article on Crickees.com wasnt an advertisement piece, I have other places to do that. It was a description about the Game. How come then you allow Zapak.com and the other games as well man? After the website is launched people will probably search information regarding the game and thats the purpose of the article. I'll not disagree with you although I do not see it quite as you do - it does rather depend on what, how, when to my mind. However if you look at the section above you will see I have interacted with that user. The page itself is far more accessible quickly than the history in case they decide to go on recreating things they have had deleted (which has been known to happen). I would like to start a page about Quality Care, The Nature Care Company, from Coralville, IA, but before even beginning, my user page was deleted. TruGreen Chem Lawn of ServiceMaster, a similar business in the area, has an untouched page. What is the difference here, and what makes an advertisement, rather than an informative page about the legacy of a business that has been serving its local community for over 25 years? Page deletion

I have launched a new open source project on SIP testing and one person belonging to the company that sponsored the project, went on and created the page "sipper". I see that it is now deleted by you. I have no intention of any advertising through Wikipedia as I value the standards set by Wikipedia. I also do not want that if down the road when the some other bonafide user wants to create a page on this free software then he/she should face any issues. Agreed that the content there was inappropriate and did look like an advert. The user user:Debashisrout works for the same company as I do but has no role in this open source project which is a separate entity. He created the page on his on volition (I would never have asked him to create such content that would be flagged right away). Since then he restored the link in MagicISO on 12:22, 30 July 2008 after it was removed and was aware that his link in E-mail address remained when he edited the sentence containing the link on 11:09, 21 September 2008.
