To continue, You say: "The items all state they are copyrighted to the BBC" - this is not good for the free encyclopedia that Wikipedia is. Since You also scanned the photos, it is very hard for others to verify the information also. Of cource WP accepts promo photos, but they must be well sourced and verifiable. Can You add such source info that if someone who reads the article can go to the image page and from the info there also obtain the photo? Anyone can upload images and say that only they have the picture and claim it to be a promo picture. What if it isn't, then WP is sued and could be shut down. Have You considered that there are many biographical articles in WP without photos, and they are still great. Please fix this issue. The page http://www.webkin.co.uk/ says at the bottom: © Ellen Stafford, 2004 so that doesn't help. It's also just a fan page and not an official page. Find the images in BBCs promo page and You are clear. feydey 02:26, 4 March 2006 (UTC)

The case of "copyrighted to the BBC at the bottom of the photo" i'd say that doesn't really matter, but it looks ugly (like those autographs in the photos also). feydey 02:43, 4 March 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for you message. It's very wise of you to get the advice of more experienced editors -- it's something new people usually don't do, and upload anything and everything. I hope you stay around.
The firs thing many new editors do to the EastEnders articles is add images. They'll often lift them straight from the BBC's website. Someone, like me, then has to go through them all and mark them for deletion, and someone else has to do the deleting. The photographs are the property of the BBC, not wikipedia.
It's easy to be very liberal with the 'fair use' and 'promotional' tags. A little thought, however, reveals that it does not equate to 'anything goes'.
Feyday has covered most of the relevant points and issues. I particularly like his point about the point of images. There are many articles in poor state because of poor formatting and writing. Some need expanding. Some need rewriting because they themselves have been lifted from other websites. The words are the most important things in wikipedia.
All things considered, my advice would be not to use these images. The sourcing/verifiable/copyright issue is too cloudy, and it's probably not worth the hassle anyway.
However, genuine screenshots are more acceptable. A genuine screenshot is a still frame - not a professional photograph (also called a 'still').

I've just checked your contributions -- I see that you are uploading the images taken from the BBC's website. Please stop doing this. It's all been done before, and they've all been deleted before. I would appreciate it if you could now add the following to those images: {{db|I didn't realise I was infringing copyright when uploading these images}}. It would be quicker if you did this yourself. Image warnings are not "old" when placed 0-7 days ago -- 2 March 2006 ~ 13:49, 9 March 2006 . You can always archive all your messages after some (say 50 messages/2 months) time. Do not just delete some messages (esp. warnings). feydey 01:20, 10 March 2006 (UTC)

Take a look at Wikipedia:How to archive a talk page. Everyone makes mistakes at some point, especially when they are new. They are to be expected. The problem with removing things (like you did with the warnings) is that it can be construed as deceit. There's no need to hide genuine mistakes -- we're all human.
