Hi Gringer!

Thank you for converting Real grounds 1000.jpg into swg file! Honestly, I like more hand-made drawings but this is only my opinion...
I would like to ask you, if it is possible, to break the voltage bars around the labels so that they do not superpose. Also, it would be better, if the cross points and the terminals are bigger.

Modeling DNA's double helix in SVG

After googling "inkscape DNA", I came across your DNA-SNP image on Wikimedia (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dna-SNP.svg). I just began using Inkscape, and thought I may ask for some help: could you explain how you made the spirals for your image's DNA double helix? I'm currently trying to create a similar DNA image to provide pathway diagrams for the article on homologous recombination, based on Figures 2 and 3 from Sung, P; Klein, H (2006). "Mechanism of homologous recombination: mediators and helicases take on regulatory functions". Nature Reviews Molecular Cell Biology. 7: 739–750. doi:10.1038/nrm2008. Thank you! Downloading SVG files

While the busy community of computer programmers and web developers are DETERMINED TO MAKE EVERYONE ACCESS EVERYTHING - INCLUDING SOFTWARE - VIA THE INTERNET instead of 'owning' their own software, I, for one, prefer to store my own copies of stuff i admire.

For one thing i may not always have ACCESS to the internet, and many places in the world - including some areas of the UK - only have very poor broadband connections.

So, while I appreciate that SVG files are not directly downloadable as an image, i have got Inkscape but still cannot find out HOW to download it!

I readily admit that this is possibly purely my own ignorance, nut i have exhausted practically every link on the

• http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Tree_of_life_with_genome_size.svg * page but cannot find any instructions as to where or how to download it.

While i hate to bother you with my petty concerns, if you know HOW or know WHERE i can LEARN HOW, i would appreciate a heads-up.

I'm not likely to work on this, as I have other things to do at the moment. However, I can offer a few suggestions as to why it isn't being snatched up by other people:

• This isn't a completely trivial vector conversion, due to JPEG artefacts and complex elements in your map.
• Doing this "properly" would require going back to official maps of the area, and the source is not hyperlinked in the original picture
• Some lines are smooth, others are jagged with sharp corners, and some have varying thickness (i.e. borders are unclear). This inconsistency doesn't seem like what was intended in the picture
• There is an overlap of a few line segments at the top of region 23, resulting in a cross shape, which is unlikely to be wanted in the final version

There's usually no need to go back to talk pages to ask for something on Wikipedia:Graphic Lab/Image workshop to be done, that's the point of the page. • It was somewhat intentional, in order to generate the page. I had trouble uploading the first part of this talk, as it is 59MB, and my connections time out on uploading that. Dodecahedron

I reverted your substitutions of for as inferior and inconsistent rendering from the other regular and uniform polyhedra. The PNG is sufficient resolution, and higher visual quality. If you're interest in a wholesale conversion of all the uniform polyhedron images, and they're all better quality, it would make more sense to me to consider wholesale replacement. Just to explain, I made the modification for the dodecahedron because it was previously marked as needing conversion to SVG here. I see that this tag is no longer present on the image, so I won't bother changing the rest. Got it, good try. I just don't know why they do that, mark images for SVG without any context for the suggestion. Any original images generated by software automation shouldn't be categorically considered for SVG conversion on grounds of just being PNG. Here for example, it'd make more sense to create a polyhedron generating software that can export SVG directly, rather than trying to hand-trace hundreds of digital images. Image problem

Thanks for getting us .svg versions of older formats! One seems to have lost some details: File:De-epoxidation.svg needs some punctuation above the arrow and a temperature-scale symbol below it. While you're fixing, the "n" of "n-BuLi" should be italicized ("n-BuLi"). Also, for improved layout, could horizontally align the items above vs below the arrow and shorten the arrow a lot...no need for so much whitespace and weird justification. Orthographic map for Polynesia

Hi gringer. I really like your map File:NZL orthographic NaturalEarth.svg and I was wondering if you could do a similar map centred on Tahiti? I want to make an attractive and accurate map of the Polynesian triangle maps - there are problems with the present ones for various reasons and I just need a suitable projection to start from. Orthographic projection

Hi, I saw your maps (in orthographic projection, I really liked) and I've done something similar on a map of Chile. I did it with information from NaturalEarth and the rest I've done with the Inskcape and Global Mapper (I don't know how to use scripts). I really liked the map of NZ (but the thumbnail looks too dark). Can I have your opinion about the map of Chile? -- Addicted (Talk) 02:08, 6 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The map looks fine. Visually, the main difference is that you've got lots of radial gradients where I only have one (with an off-centre focal point). I wrote my script for two main reasons: to have a consistent process for generating maps of different types/projections, and to make it easier to customise the maps by storing country/region data within the SVG file (only noticeable by viewing the source of the files). Arab world protests

Hi, Gringer. I have watched your work in 2010-2011 Arab world protests.svg, and I have to congratulate you, but also tell you some mistakes (because I don't know how to update the archive, haha... if you tell me how to do it I'll be grateful to you). Morocco-Western Sahara border is not correct, real border is more northern, parallel to the Mauritania-Western Sahara border. Moreover, Moroccan wall is a de facto border, but not a international recognized border (maybe it shouldn't be drawn... or protests should be shown on the Sahara territory occupied by Morocco). Okay, done. The Yemen island is actually quite a lot bigger than Bahrain. Bahrain was getting swamped 1px borders (itself, and Saudi Arabia), so I've removed the borders for Bahrain and Comoros, and shifted them to the top so they are drawn last. gringer (talk) 23:09, 20 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Well, yes, there are two governments: Morocco and Western Sahara. Morocco claims all Western Sahara, but they just control the area at the West of the wall. And the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) control the area at the East of the wall (they claim all Western Sahara too). But the origin of the conflict is very different from Somalia. Spain was the colonial power which owned Western Sahara until 1975, Sahrawis fought for their independence before, but Morocco invaded Western Sahara and Spain left it to Morocco and Mauritania. Then, Mauritania also left the territory and Morocco occupied this territory. SADR was proclaimed, but they just control the territory outside the wall, anyway it is recognized by several countries and the African Union. Morocco colonized Western Sahara, nowadays there are more Moroccan colonists in the occupied Western Sahara than Sahrawis, and Sahrawis are totally discriminated and their rights violated. That was the key of the protests, protests were just on the Moroccan side, by Sahrawis, and they were crushed by Moroccans.

Ah, I see. I'm not convinced that the orthographic map page is the best place for a tutorial. My biased opinion would be to see my user page, where I have a section on my attempts to create maps. I have a script that has been designed specifically for creating maps of various types for Wikipedia. Every map generated with this script produces (as SVG comments) a command line that can be used to generate the map, something like the following:

Woow ! I never saw your user page, I leaved wiki 3 years ago. My intent was to collect your tutorial, and that the tutorial should be visible in the shared space (not userspace). Need help with Graphic Lab

Hello! I'm Lolax Marks and I was interested on working in the Graphic Lab, but I need help. John of Reading referred you to me. I have looked at several tutorials, but I've had difficulty understanding them. I find they mostly explain terms and why to use them, rather than telling one how to use tools like SVG's and requested images. Could you give me some advice? SVG is fairly easy to pick up, and quite rewarding. If you're interested in SVG and/or illustration, then you should probably have some working knowledge of Inkscape. It's free and open source software, and has an interface that is fairly quick to learn. Here are some other links you could try out:

• Inkscape Tutorials blog — for getting your feet wet
• images for conversion to SVG — you might find some "easy" images there, if the illustration workshop is a bit beyond you at the moment
• tutorials about the SVG format — for a deeper understanding of SVG

Sorry, I named that wrong (was 'SVG images for cleanup', changed now). You can click through the categories and look at the images. Work on one image at a time, or a group of similar images. To start with, click through the links and look for fairly simple drawings with only a few colours (for example, File:Vacuum_brake_applied.gif, File:Vacuum_brake_general.gif, File:Vacuum_brake_release.gif). The general process I follow is something like this:

1. Download the image to your computer from the image page (right click, save link as)
2. Load the image up in inkscape
3. Draw a vector version over the top of it (the hard part of the process)
4. Alternate the image to the top and bottom layer to make sure it matches the vector version closely enough
5. Delete the non-vectored image layer
6. Save the remaining vector image
7. Upload your new vector image to commons, trying to match the description, tags, and categories of the original image
8. Replace the {{Convert to SVG}} template with a {{vector version available|new image name.svg}} template, as indicated in the text of the {{Convert to SVG}} template.

Feel free to ask further questions. It's difficult to know what level of knowledge people have regarding using wikipedia (or Inkscape), so I expect there will be some things that need further clarification. gringer (talk) 08:53, 22 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, Flappiefh. It's great to see that someone is finding my programs useful. The script is still a bit rough round the edges (as it looks like you've noticed in your Corriger_une_carte_sous_Inkscape section), so there might be some sort of automatic clipping and/or path correction in a future version.  Done via a manual tracing. I've tried to match the gradient somewhat, but couldn't be bothered with the very subtle drop shadow. If you know what font was used for the website address, let me know and I'll update that. Orthographic projection in mapnik

Hello David, have you made any progress with this? I am trying to do more or less the same thing, and I ran into the same problem. The python script you posted was very useful for me. I should say that when I used a projection string such as the one given here ("world from space" projection at spatialreference.org), my output map wasn't blank, but it contained simply just France for some reason (including Corsica and French Guiana, drawn correctly in the orthographic projection, but nothing else). Then, with this 'mapnik.Projection' string,

'+proj=ortho +lat_0=35 +lon_0=40 +x_0=0 +y_0=0 +a=6370997 +b=6370997 +units=m +no_defs'

I tried using the physical '50m_land' shape file (for just the landmass instead of country borders), and mapnik gave me the correct orthographic drawing of the Afro-Eurasian landmass, plus some random islands (such as Japan and Novaya Zemlya, but no Greenland, British Isles or mediterranean islands, not to mention any trace of the Americas).

So, mapnik is quite capable of using the proj4 'ortho' projection, but somehow it does a shoddy job of deciding which points it should draw. So before I go further on a fool's errand you have already run through, let me ask you, do you think I should just give up on mapnik as broken, or will there be some smart way of still getting it to do what we want?

By the way, I also tried to use your perlshaper script to draw maps based on 'physical' shapefiles (lakes and rivers), like so,

Do you think I have a chance of fixing this using the perl libraries, or am I stuck with mapnik? It turns out that mapnik can draw the 'rivers' file, but it interprets the rivers as polygons for some reason, so I get the rivers as blue patches where a straight edge connects the source and the mouth, so even if I get mapnik to draw orthographic, I'll still need to worry over this. I always dreaded and tried to avoid having to start messing with mapping software, and unfortunately it turns out it is every bit as difficult and buggy as I feared...

No more luck, I'm afraid. The Polyline shouldn't be too difficult to implement in my script, so I'll see what I can do about that. I've given up on mapnik for doing what I want because it seems to at least have the same problems my script has with the proj4 libraries. Unfortunately, I think I may need to step outside the proj4 library and do the transformations manually in order to fix this issue. That's sort of okay for the 'default' projections I use in my script, but I can't see myself re-implementing the entire proj4 library just to fix a couple of out-of-range bugs. gringer (talk) 12:40, 11 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I've just added 'PolyLine' support into my script. It now assumes than any 'PolyLine' shape is a river, colouring it the same as the 'coastline' colour (I added a 'river' style). For NE data, it will consider the 'region name' to be the name of the river. Perlshaper (map drawing) updates

Greetings Flappiefh,

A few days ago, I had another look at your french speaking tutorial about my perlshaper script and noticed a few bugs and other things that could be improved. Now that I've had a bit of spare time to work on it, my script is updated to do a few things better. In particular:

• remove dependency on proj4 library -- I can do the projects faster and better (particularly orthographic) using my own code within Perl
• edge clipping and point addition -- substantially reduces need to touch up images using Inkscape
• countries are now correctly in subgroups of their sovereign group, instead of the other way round
• countries have the class of both their country name and the sovereign group name
• the search for ISO codes has been made more relaxed, so 'FRA' actually comes up with something now
• zoom boxes have been changed substantially -- you should now be able to zoom in on any place in any projection and retain the shapes from the original projection

I intend to add in zoom box clipping shortly

Because of the substantial backend change (i.e. how projection is done), as well as other additions I've made, there will probably be some introduced bugs that I haven't noticed. Please keep me up to date if anything quirky seems to be going on. Cheers. Gringer (d) 1 mai 2013 à 14:58 (CEST)

I'm glad you found some time to polish your script, and warned me about it. I've just tested the latest version (1.78) and here's what I found out:

1. The speed of the process has been improved, indeed!
2. The edges of the countries seem all OK now (no more weird straight lines for me). This was, I think, the most needed fix. I only saw a little glitch at the bottom of Antartica with the Winkel Tripel projection (the bottom line is not parallel to the frame).
3. Now the ISO codes: I still have the same problem with some countried not centered or zoomed in correctly. But I may have found out what happens for some of them. For instead, France includes its foreign territories, like Guyane, Martinique, La Réunion... Thus, "-center FRA" results in a view centered on Africa. Still I don't know why "-center FRA -zoom FRA" shows only Africa, when it should display Guyane on the left, France on the top, and La Réunion on the right.
4. The "-zoom" parameter sometimes misses some neighbour countries. Try "-center RUS -zoom RUS" and you'll get Mongolia, and some european neighbour countries missing (same problem with IND and MEX).

I've just found another bug (sorry!): if you execute perl perlshaper.pl -type orthographic 50m_cultural/ne_50m_admin_0_countries 50m_cultural/ne_50m_admin_0_tiny_countries -res 0.25 -centre USA -sub USA -v > map.svg, you'll find that the parts of the parallels that should be hidden are not. Those have the shape of straight lines. Curiously, this doesn't happen with FRA, ITA, ETH or DEU, but does with MEX, CHL, IND and KGZ... --Flappiefh (talk) 21:47, 3 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I have noticed that... I think the path rotation for fixing the map edge issues is causing some paths to be joined that shouldn't be joined. Good, but your fix introduced a regression on 1.80: now a large part of the northern graticules won't show up when one produces a view close to Equator. OK, much better now with v1.82! I haven't found bugs using the sole -center parameter. So I started testing the -zoom parameter that way: -sub USA -center USA - zoom USA. Half of the countries I have tested that way worked great. The other half didn't make it to the SVG file. Here's the error message I encounter: Reprojecting and simplifying shapes............Can't use string ("0") as an ARRAY ref while "strict refs" in use at perlshaper.pl line 392 [or 407 sometimes].. Some of the affected countries are UKR, MOZ, KWT and IND. Wow, thanks for checking again so quickly. You're hitting the new code with that error, so it was easier for me to work out what was going wrong and write a fix. The Ross Dependency spherical triangle is a single path in the uploaded SVG

and can be extracted simply. A diff produced a lot more output than this one change to your graphic.

I was able to manually patch your SVG to my one change -- much more of a surgical approach this time.

I tested the usefulness of the spherical triangle, by duplicating the object, and reshaping it, using its (nine) handles, on a completely different area of the globe (same projection). It appears to be a good, generalized solution to this problem, and took only 20 minutes to align it to the Pole, selected parallel, and two meridians. India Gray-Greens with perlshaper

Hi, I'm interested in making gray-green maps of all the states, provinces and disputed regions in India and China. I figure I’ll use the perlshaper script to do it. The challenge is to get the data from Wikipedia:WikiProject_Indian_maps into the http://www.naturalearthdata.com/ format or alternately modify perlshaper to work with WikiProject_India_maps data. I have a degree in computer science and I'm a skilled programmer. Could you recommend the best way for me to go about making these maps? It seems a bit of a waste to convert the wonderful SVG maps that have already been made into shapefiles just so that you can change the colours. Why not just write a script to modify the colours on the SVG files directly? Yeah, I was so excited when it dawned on me that there where probably other sources of shapefiles than http://www.naturalearthdata.com/ I googled "Maharashtra.shp" and found some useful data. Since then I've been stepping through the perlshaper script to figure out the differences in the format. I now have a script that creates a csv file of all the shape name and index data. Next step I read the file in a spread sheet program and set columns indicating how to display, group and center each shape. Orthographic projections green and grey colour scheme

Hello. I was wondering why the maps produced using your script use a different colour scheme to the convention here: Wikipedia:WikiProject Maps/Conventions/Orthographic maps? Eg:

Maps across the English Wikipedia seem to use either, and I'm unsure which scheme to use when I'm creating maps (I don't use your script). I have always used followed the convention previously. Would be good if a scheme could be decided upon going forward so the inconsistency can be phased out.

Conventions change over time. The colour scheme that I've used matches the wikipedia convention as it was at some time in the past, but may not represent the current scheme. FWIW, my script generates CSS at the beginning of the SVG file which can be easily changed for a different colour scheme. However, the globes produced by my script are more visibly shaded around the edges (making them appear less flat). Modification to perlshaper.pl

Gringer,

I use the -sub option with perlshaper.pl and found that it does not work with version 1.94 anymore. The problem is in the GetOptions perl code. When passing args to a sub, they're taken as a list, so you need to use $_[1] (i.e., an element of @_) instead of $_ to access the values, e.g.:

761.           'subjects|sub=s@' => sub { $subjectNames{$_[1]} = 1},

Trouble Zooming precisely in perlshaper

I've been using perlshaper to generate some maps for personal use (studying geography). It took a while to get going but I've mostly got a workflow now. However, one area I'm having trouble is zooming to a country or region that I'm interested in. I'm including populated areas in my maps so I have accurate locations of cities, and this works relatively well with some editing of the svg file. However, for certain countries, cities are being included which extend the map well beyond the borders I'm interested in, and I think the underlying cause is that cities under the country's control but technically part of another nation are being included in the zoom. For example, this script for Denmark:

So it seems to recognize the command enough to initialize the zoom, but fails later when it treats it as an object.

Is there a solution to this? Another solution would be a way to specify only DNK regions and ignore DNK GRL regions (Greenland), but that doesn't seem to be possible unless I'm missing some specifics.

Hi Dylansan,

This error was a bug in how the code was dealing with point-like arguments, which has now been fixed (see versions 1.95+). Unfortunately, I never really got orthographic zooming to work correctly, so you're likely to hit other errors with this code. I've been doing orthographic zoom boxes manually, by generating the full hemisphere and editing the result in Inkscape. Thanks for the reply. Glad to see you're still working on it. I managed to get around my problem by editing the naturalearth shapefile in QGIS, removing all the entries I didn't want. I did notice I was using 1.94, so hopefully I run into fewer issues now that I've updated. As far as zooming goes, I haven't really had any other issues, except that the scale factors for different maps are hard to predict and work with. Smaller countries tend to produce larger maps which, with the same scale factor, makes features like rivers and borders quite small or even invisible. I have been able to get around this by generating the map once, then using the width to calculate a psize that gives the right scale for the results I want. I do find it strange that the psize seems to affect all the scales of lines and shapes, but I suppose it's for the best, since it makes changing the overall scale much easier.

Since I'm currently using it right now just for personal use, and it's working well enough at the moment, don't feel you have to work on the program just to make my life easier. However, once I finish all the maps I need for myself (which I plan to share as Anki flashcards at some point) I may try to regenerate some maps currently used on wikipedia to be more consistent and current, so any tweaking you do that makes that easier or smoother would probably be a good thing.

Hi Dylansan, there's another version up now (1.96) which allows you to use the code-based searches with more specificity (specifying both sovereignty and country codes as sov/country). The following command now generates a map of the main Denmark islands without modification to the shapefiles:

I added -nolines option to command line. perlshaper.pl executed without errors but the result did not changed. Lines are present in the result when this option added to command line.

Hi Megafanat, thanks for your bug reports for perlshaper. I've updated perlshaper to get the '-nolines' option working again, and removed the 'res' option from the instruction (the 'round' option basically does the same thing). The latitude/longitude point issue is to do with the lines being described by straight line segments, rather than spline curves. You can reduce the effect of this by reducing the image resolution (e.g. '-round 1' or 'round 0', but bear in mind that this setting will affect other points on the image as well). I'm not currently using proper curve definitions because the equations are too complicated for me to easily model. If you are concerned about image size, you can select the grid line group in Inkscape (might need to use the XML editor to do that) and use the 'simplify' command (<Ctrl>+L), which will convert the grid into proper curves. gringer (talk) 22:47, 9 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Color maps for all colours in many languages

Hi, I saw this great map of yours, File:Linear visible spectrum.svg - Wikimedia Commons and I was hoping there was more. Seeing that this was your own work, I dread that this is all there is, but shall ask just in case.

What maps that I have created is this an issue for? Most of my maps are based on the Natural Earth Data map dataset, so you would be better off getting it updated there, or letting me know if that dataset has been updated to be correct.
