WP:AFC Helper News

Hello! I wanted to drop a quick note for all of our AFC participants; nothing huge and fancy like a newsletter, but a few points of interest.

• AFCH will now show live previews of the comment to be left on a decline.
• The template {{db-afc-move}} has been created - this template is similar to {{db-move}} when there is a redirect in the way of an acceptance, but specifically tells the patrolling admin to let you (the draft reviewer) take care of the actual move.

Short and sweet, but there's always more to discuss at WT:AFC. Stop on by, maybe review a draft on the way? Road sign vandalism

The more I am looking the less confident I am. I have lifted their block and am planning to review all of their reverted edits. This originated in a bunch of requests for page protection (see the archive at RfPP for the 27th). @ZH8000: Do you want to have a second look at their more recent edits you reverted in light of this? Module:Jct

Whatever else you've been trying to fix in Module:Jct has disrupted the |rdt= function. Shields should be no taller than 17px (rather than the default height) so as to not break Route Diagram Templates. Please fix. Useddenim (talk) 13:31, 7 April 2022 (UTC)

None of the examples in Template:Jct/testcases are in RDTs, so it doesn't work correctly in the real world. Look at Template:Gandhidham Railway, and notice the gaps between rows. Useddenim (talk) 00:39, 8 April 2022 (UTC)

I think I figured out what you're viewing as wrong. Square files like File:US 1.svg are 17x17px. Wide files like File:US 101.svg are 21x17px. Tall files like File:US 66 (historic).svg are 17x21px. Tl;dr: it's either 17px tall or 17px wide depending on orientation and therefore not broken. –Fredddie™ 00:53, 8 April 2022 (UTC)

The problem is that that RDTs require a fixed row height. Images that increase that cause display problems for the diagrams. Therefor the solution is to code {{jct}} so that images display as x17px with the |rtd= option set. (Wider icons are not a problem.) Useddenim (talk) 10:11, 9 April 2022 (UTC)

That actually can't be done due to the MoS. Text sizes for infoboxes and RDTs are already 90% of body text, the MoS sets a limit of 85%. This is roughly the same as setting body text in a Word document at 12pt, infobox text is 11pt and the smallest text can be is 10pt. I went looking around for some other text-stacking templates to see if there was some leeway, but as you can see they all look the same, size-wise. –Fredddie™ 23:05, 13 April 2022 (UTC)

Oh, I'm quite aware of the MOS/font size issue. (See Template talk:Routemap/Archive 1#Text size and Template talk:Routemap/Archive 2#Font sizes are too small per MOS:FONTSIZE.) But {{BSsplit}} (and {{BSto}}) is more commonly used in thesecondary, rather than primary text column, so it balances out. However, that's the perfect getting in the way of the good enough. Is there any reason why you can't (or won't) modify the code for {{jct}} so that vertical icons are limited to ≤x20px? If I'm interpreting the Lua code correctly, the template used to do that. Infobox road/hide/destinations (random query)

Hiya. Apologies for the random question, but as someone who has worked on maintaining Template:Infobox road/hide/destinations, I wonder if you might know the answer. For some reason, despite "IRL" apparently being listed in the exemption ("show") list, the Irish road templates which rely on this "show/hide" feature do not seem to show any destinations. Not any longer at any rate. For example, though it has a populated "destinations" parameter, this infobox template content doesn't show in the N28 road (Ireland) article. Strangely, if I change the country to "AUS", the "destinations" content is however no longer hidden. I don't suppose you'd have any ideas why? (Again, apologies for the random query. New Page Patrol newsletter May 2022

New Page Review queue March 2022

Hello Fredddie/Archives,

At the time of the last newsletter (No.26, September 2021), the backlog was 'only' just over 6,000 articles. In the past six months, the backlog has reached nearly 16,000, a staggering level not seen in several years. A very small number of users had been doing the vast majority of the reviews. Due to "burn-out", we have recently lost most of this effort. Furthermore, several reviewers have been stripped of the user right for abuse of privilege and the articles they patrolled were put back in the queue.

Several discussions on the state of the process have taken place on the talk page, but there has been no action to make any changes. The project also lacks coordination since the "position" is vacant.

In the last 30 days, only 100 reviewers have made more than 8 patrols and only 50 have averaged one review a day. There are currently 822 New Page Reviewers, but about a third have not had any activity in the past month. All 847 administrators have this permission, but only about a dozen significantly contribute to NPP.

This means we have an active pool of about 450 to address the backlog. We cannot rely on a few to do most of the work as that inevitably leads to burnout. A fairly experienced reviewer can usually do a review in a few minutes. If every active reviewer would patrol just one article per day, the backlog would very quickly disappear.

If you have noticed a user with a good understanding of Wikipedia notability and deletion, do suggest they help the effort by placing {{subst:NPR invite}} on their talk page.

If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process and its software.

I've been barked at before for discussing points with another editor on a third editor's talk page, so I'm moving it here. If you prefer somewhere else let me know. Of course, Imzadi1979 can still respond to your question on the original thread.

Your question, "Why not put Category:Lists of roads in XX in Category:Lists of buildings and structures in XX if they're not already?", is more or less the question I had in mind when I started the discussion.

To summarize my points: 1) Generally, Lists of roads in XX already is in Category:Lists of buildings and structures in XX. However, in the case of the non-list categories, Roads in XX is not in Buildings and structures in XX.

2) In my opinion, roads are structures, but edge-case structures. When categorizing we should ask ourselves "Is the category a 'defining characteristic' of the subject. Again, in my opinion only, I'm leaning toward saying it is not defining. When describing a road, would you expect many people to say something like "a road is a structure that..."?

I am not prepared to add or remove the Building and structures categories en masse. Either would be a large undertaking. I would need a far wider discussion with a clear consensus before doing either. --DB1729 (talk) 01:08, 6 June 2022 (UTC)

@DB1729: OK I dug into it a little more and I think the general category scheme we have now makes sense. Roads in XX feeds into Infrastructure in XX which feeds into Construction. Buildings and Structures in XX feeds into Construction in XX which feeds into Construction. I also noticed the Architecture in XX category structure feeds into Construction in XX.

So I don't think there needs to be any major restructuring of categories. If anything, Infrastructure in XX should be in Construction in XX similar to Architecture in XX.

Yeah...at least, you're not wrong. I checked it out. Starting from Category:Roads I was easily able to navigate up the tree to Category:Infrastructure and then Category:Construction; from Category:Roads in Michigan it just takes a little longer. From Category:Buildings and structures you quickly get to Construction. It's not exactly a slam-dunk argument, but if you found a rationale for pretty much leaving things as they are, I'm all for that! DB1729 (talk) 14:36, 6 June 2022 (UTC)

Backlog status

At the time of the last newsletter (No.27, May 2022), the backlog was approaching 16,000, having shot up rapidly from 6,000 over the prior two months. The attention the newsletter brought to the backlog sparked a flurry of activity. There was new discussion on process improvements, efforts to invite new editors to participate in NPP increased and more editors requested the NPP user right so they could help, and most importantly, the number of reviews picked up and the backlog decreased, dipping below 14,000[a] at the end of May.

Since then, the news has not been so good. The backlog is basically flat, hovering around 14,200. I wish I could report the number of reviews done and the number of new articles added to the queue. But the available statistics we have are woefully inadequate. The only real number we have is the net queue size.[b]

In the last 30 days, the top 100 reviewers have all made more than 16 patrols (up from 8 last month), and about 70 have averaged one review a day (up from 50 last month).

While there are more people doing more reviews, many of the ~730 with the NPP right are doing little. Most of the reviews are being done by the top 50 or 100 reviewers. They need your help. We appreciate every review done, but please aim to do one a day (on average, or 30 a month).

TIP – New school articles

Many new articles on schools are being created by new users in developing and/or non-English-speaking countries. The authors are probably not even aware of Wikipedia's projects and policy pages. WP:WPSCH/AG has some excellent advice and resources specifically written for these users. Reviewers could consider providing such first-time article creators with a link to it while also mentioning that not all schools pass the GNG and that elementary schools are almost certainly not notable.

There has been significant discussion at WP:VPP recently on NPP-related matters (Draftification, Deletion, Notability, Verifiability, Burden). Proposals that would somewhat ease the burden on NPP aren't gaining much traction, although there are suggestions that the role of NPP be fundamentally changed to focus only on major CSD-type issues.

New Page Patrol newsletter August 2022

Hello Fredddie/Archives,

Backlog status

After the last newsletter (No.28, June 2022), the backlog declined another 1,000 to 13,000 in the last week of June. Then the July backlog drive began, during which 9,900 articles were reviewed and the backlog fell by 4,500 to just under 8,500 (these numbers illustrate how many new articles regularly flow into the queue). Thanks go to the coordinators Buidhe and Zippybonzo, as well as all the nearly 100 participants. Congratulations to Dr vulpes who led with 880 points. See this page for further details.

Unfortunately, most of the decline happened in the first half of the month, and the backlog has already risen to 9,600. Understandably, it seems many backlog drive participants are taking a break from reviewing and unfortunately, we are not even keeping up with the inflow let alone driving it lower. We need the other 600 reviewers to do more! Please try to do at least one a day.

Coordination

MB and Novem Linguae have taken on some of the coordination tasks. Please let them know if you are interested in helping out. MPGuy2824 will be handling recognition, and will be retroactively awarding the annual barnstars that have not been issued for a few years.

Open letter to the WMF

The Page Curation software needs urgent attention. There are dozens of bug fixes and enhancements that are stalled (listed at Suggested improvements). We have written a letter to be sent to the WMF and we encourage as many patrollers as possible to sign it here. We are also in negotiation with the Board of Trustees to press for assistance. Better software will make the active reviewers we have more productive.

TIP - Reviewing by subject

Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages by their most familiar subjects can do so from the regularly updated sorted topic list.

New reviewers

The NPP School is being underused. The learning curve for NPP is quite steep, but a detailed and easy-to-read tutorial exists, and the Curation Tool's many features are fully described and illustrated on the updated page here.

Template:Country data Shanghai

I have no idea why, but after your recent edits, I am seeing a bunch of transclusions of Template:Country data Shanghai, Template:Country data Henan, ... which is adding entries to Wikipedia:Database reports/Transclusions of non-existent templates. Yes, that IP is annoying, to put it mildly. There's lots of half-baked ideas for drafts or templates that will never fly, lots of "shall [do]" in comments that come across as a command instead of a suggestion... Interstate 540 (North Carolina) Commons Map moved

Just informing you I moved the Commons Map for Interstate 540 (North Carolina) from "Data:Interstate 540 and North Carolina Highway 540.map" to "Data:Interstate 540 (North Carolina).map" for it to remain consistent with the source page's new name and other Commons Map files. This has caused it to no longer appear on the statewide map you are currently working on, however, I believe that updating it to the new name should work. My apologies for the disruption. Roman roads

Hi @Fredddie:, thanks for your work on the Infobox roads templates yesterday. I am from the UK and have a particular interest in Roman roads.
For me the "Major junctions" heading in this infobox doesn't seem appropriate in the context of these historical routes. I wondered if there was a way of suppressing this heading if |type=roman was used so that the start and end points (from the |terminus_a= and |terminus_b= parameters) fitted under the "Route information" heading instead? Alternatively, perhaps if the |junction= parameter was empty or missing altogether, then the same effect could be achieved, which might also be appropriate for shorter modern roads?

This might be better suited for a wider discussion at Template talk:Infobox road. That being said, I'm not against what you're proposing per se, but I'm loath to have a whole slew of parameters and functionality be turned off by using |type=roman. –Fredddie™ 04:41, 20 December 2022 (UTC)
