Renaming of Chinese expressway articles
Hello again, after working on some expressway articles in the Shanghai region, I've come upon a problem again.
The current conventions as found on WP:NC (Chinese) for expressways are:
For expressways, add the expressway number as a prefix to the expressway name in the article. The prefix and the expressway name should be separated by a space.
I've made a proposal on the talk page Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (Chinese)#Expressway naming to drop the numbered prefix (G1, S1, etc) from the article name as I find it unnecessary/redundant and adds a bit of confusion. If you look on that page I give my rationale why (the second point I stumbled upon while examining the Shanghai-Jiaxing-Huzhou Expressway). I would like your opinion on this. Thanks and have a happy new year. Heights(Want to talk?)17:16, 1 January 2013 (UTC)
I have replied on the NC page. I think you're spot on, but I will defer to editors who are more familiar with Chinese articles. –Fredddie™23:58, 1 January 2013 (UTC)
Thanks. I've left messages on the talk pages of a few - but honestly, I don't think there are many current active editors of Chinese expressway articles. But it's worth a try to get some discussion. :P Heights(Want to talk?)00:49, 2 January 2013 (UTC)
You can always leave a message at WT:HWY that there is an ongoing discussion. Then again, some of the people who would see that page already stalk my talk page, so they should just go and comment already. :) –Fredddie™00:53, 2 January 2013 (UTC)
Blog post
Rather than spamming it out to a few people, I'm going to try this. I'm done editing the newsletter. If everyone was waiting on me, you can send it out safely now. –Fredddie™15:37, 17 January 2013 (UTC)
The Center Line: U.S. Roads WikiProject Newsletter, Winter 2013
The WikiProject Report would like to focus on the WikiWork metrics for a Signpost article. This is an excellent opportunity to draw attention to your efforts and spread word about these helpful formulas to other WikiProjects. Would you be willing to participate in an interview? If so, here are the questions for the interview. Just add your response below each question and feel free to skip any questions that you don't feel comfortable answering. Multiple editors will have an opportunity to respond to the interview questions, so be sure to sign your answers. If you know anyone else who would like to participate in the interview, please share this with them. Have a great day. –Mabeenot (talk) 17:27, 18 January 2013 (UTC)
I only mentioned the table format since I went to review the article to see if the pink stripes were there representing partial interchanges (77 has a decent amount), and of course they weren't. No rush on my end to change anything since partials can be noted in the "Notes" column. Mapsax (talk) 13:30, 20 January 2013 (UTC)
Hey Fredddie, I need some help with my I-35 (Kansas) article in my sandbox, specifically with the exit table. I'm not sure how to structure it according to Wikipedia procedure. Can you help me get it up to par so that we can get the article published?
Hello. This message is being sent to inform you that there is currently a discussion at Wikipedia:Dispute resolution noticeboard regarding a content dispute in which you may have been involved. Content disputes can hold up article development, therefore we are requesting your participation to help find a resolution. The thread is "Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Road junction lists".
Guide for participants
If you wish to open a DR/N filing, click the "Request dispute resolution" button below this guide or go to Wikipedia:Dispute resolution noticeboard/request for an easy to follow, step by step request form.
What this noticeboard is:
It is an early step to resolve content disputes after talk page discussions have stalled. If it's something we can't help you with, or is too complex to resolve here, our volunteers will point you in the right direction.
What this noticeboard is not:
It is not a place to deal with the behavior of other editors. We deal with disputes about article content, not disputes about user conduct.
It is not a substitute for the talk pages: the dispute must have been discussed extensively on a talk page (not just through edit summaries) before resorting to DRN.
It is not a court with judges or arbitrators that issue binding decisions: we focus on resolving disputes through consensus, compromise, and explanation of policy.
Things to remember:
Discussions should be civil, calm, concise, neutral, and objective. Comment only about the article's content, not the other editors. Participants who go off-topic or become uncivil may be asked to leave the discussion.
Let the other editors know about the discussion by posting {{subst:drn-notice}} on their user talk page.
If you ever need any help, ask one of our volunteers, who will help you as best as they can. You may also wish to read through the FAQ page located here and on the DR/N talkpage.
Just to let whomever is reading this know, I won't be editing much for the time being. I'm just worn out. There have been a few times in the last couple of days where I have started routine edits and stopped them because I didn't have the energy to finish. Hopefully this little funk I'm in goes away in short order. I will still be on IRC and will watch what I watch. –Fredddie™22:46, 14 April 2013 (UTC)
Also, this is about stuff I am dealing with in the meatspace. It has nothing to do with anyone or anything on here. –Fredddie™12:14, 15 April 2013 (UTC)
I managed to download the standard through the university's autologin to the SAI website. If you send me an email, I'll reply with the relevant pages as an attachment. (It is copyrighted, but I think sending you a few pages out of a 326 page document would be covered by fair use) - Evad37 (talk) 06:56, 1 May 2013 (UTC)
Awarded for your continuing efforts in making great looking, high quality shields for Australian routes – thanks for helping out! - Evad37 (talk) 03:42, 2 May 2013 (UTC)
Help:Wiki markup has it in the punctuation section. I can't type it out without the code switching to an actual endash, so you're gonna have to look it up. TCN7JM21:50, 8 May 2013 (UTC)
Neither of those routes exist and 30 seconds of due diligence would have proven that. In the case of US 20, Rand McNally's online maps are sorely outdated. –Fredddie™22:25, 8 May 2013 (UTC)
There is a time and a place to defer to editors geographically located in the area, and this is one of them. On matters of formatting, grammar, style and such, any editor should be just as qualified as any other based on his respective skill set, but when it comes to whether or not a highway exists, geography of the editor counts for something. In short, when an editor from Michigan erases an entry related to Michigan from a list and says the purported road doesn't exist, believe him. Ditto an Iowan editor on Iowan highways. Imzadi 1979→22:49, 8 May 2013 (UTC)
As for typing an en dash, on a Mac, type ⌥ Opt+-. On Windows, you have to use the Alt codeAlt+0+1+5+0. On either operating system, there's a link in the "Wiki markup" section under the edit window to allow you to enter one into an article. Imzadi 1979→23:14, 8 May 2013 (UTC)
One, how would I find out if any of these roads actually exist (or existed in the past)? Two, how would I know (or remember) which editor(s) is/are from particular areas? I keep asking why roads are being removed because I am trying to learn why the removal is so. As I have stated countless times, I am not as good at editing as most of you (and I suck at research), so I was hoping that other users here would be willing to make the articles/redirects. Allen (Morriswa) (talk) 23:30, 8 May 2013 (UTC)
If you look at Fredddie's userpage, it says Iowa all over, Morriswa. Also, most if not all of his recognized content is from the area. TCN7JM23:44, 8 May 2013 (UTC)
WP:AURD (Australian Roads), is inviting comment on a proposal to convert Australian road articles to {{infobox road}}. Please come and discuss. The vote will be after concerns have been looked into.
The above review has been inactive for 30 days, and this is the required notification of that effect, per WP:HWY/ACR. Interested editors are encouraged to enter "Keep" or "Remove" declarations, or continue working on the article to ensure that it will remain at A-Class standards. If no attempts are made to work on the article, and a net 3 Remove declarations have not been entered, the article will remain at A-Class. --Rschen775423:50, 20 May 2013 (UTC)
AU shields
Hi Fredddie, we were very happy with your previous shielding contributions, wondering if you would be able to continue your assistance with the remaining markers? If you are otherwise occupied just let me know, and Ill see if Evad can get the Australian Standards information to another shielder (or to myself). Please let me know one way or the other on my talk page. Thanks! -- Nbound (talk) 01:41, 27 May 2013 (UTC)
Please do not remove ref improve templates from self-created articles. I tagged the page because it relies solely on one source, and some of the information on the page is not contained within the sources. smileguy91talk23:00, 7 June 2013 (UTC)
Please don't tag articles that were just created 16 minutes prior. Give them time to develop before tagging. –Fredddie™23:15, 7 June 2013 (UTC)
UK RJLs
If you remember I created a RJL for the British M5, not using the standard RJL templates. I would like to try and implement a few RJLs in article space, but clearly should be done with standard templates for ease and consistency.
There are a few points where my RJL and the template diverge, such as the mile/km order. Miles should be first, as UK uses imperial for everyday purposes. More difficult is how I formatted junctions with multiple roads, putting each road with its respective destinations on separate lines (IMO gives greater clarity).
For the record, I went ahead and took your example from the page as it was closer to what actually reflected consensus than the old example. It doesn't quite match up, and doesn't comply with MOS:DTT, but it's an improvement. --Rschen775421:32, 27 June 2013 (UTC)
The non-compliance relates to which bits exactly? Not surprised if my version diverges slightly, after all this is unfamiliar territory to me!
Is there a doc page I can familiarise myself with the more advanced syntax, such as use of via? Its possible the base template will need expansion - what's the maximum number of routes at one junction it can handle? The heavy use of roundabouts in UK makes multi-route junctions easier to construct, so the limit may be insufficent.
Possibly ;) Just want to construct a RJL using the right templates... Jct is nested within the XXint series?--Nilfanion (talk) 22:46, 27 June 2013 (UTC)
That's actually Jctint. The main issue is MOS:DTT from what I could see, but that requires templates for any practical implementation. It's not too divergent, just slightly outdated. --Rschen775422:48, 27 June 2013 (UTC)
OK, think I have got my head round the syntax now. I don't see the what the precise issue with regards to DTT (due to its length), could you enlighten me?--Nilfanion (talk) 08:27, 28 June 2013 (UTC)
Basically you have to insert some funny code to get the mile and km columns to turn a darker shade of gray than the other columns. This actually flags the columns so that screen readers can make sense of the table, per WP:ACCESS. We actually weren't compliant with this until last year. But the benefit of a template system is that these sorts of changes can be made and deployed to thousands of articles with little effort. --Rschen775408:30, 28 June 2013 (UTC)
Gotcha. I agree that templates make things easy, which is why I want to use them. Unfortunately, I can't easily because of the coordinates issue. To use the templates I'd have to drop the coords, or degrade how they are shown, and I do not want to change their display in any way without consensus.
If an optional coords column was added to {{jctint}} (maybe with a switch that disables it, unless specifically called by the GBRint wrapper?), I could start work on the UK articles.--Nilfanion (talk) 09:15, 28 June 2013 (UTC)
Which is what I meant by degrading the display. Footnotes are OK with a few, but aren't the right approach when everything on a long route has coords like the M5 motorway. I'd rather just have the coords in exactly same format before and after the RJL is converted.
That said, there's only a few RJLs with full coords so I can work around them for now. What I really want at present is do a few and see if that format is accepted on them...--Nilfanion (talk) 09:34, 28 June 2013 (UTC)
As you've no doubt figured out by now, coordinates are a touchy subject, especially in UK roads. A lot of the US editors are of the belief that coordinates are completely unnecessary, and are not good for visualizing linear objects. Instead, we use geographic shapefiles instead to accurately represent linear objects. Moving forward, the overall consensus is to use KML - while coordinates aren't defacto banned, IMHO it's not a great idea to keep using them, and it borders on indiscriminate information and taking up too much space in the current format. But perhaps avoiding the issue for now is best for now - the column issue may be a solution as long as there is a way to prevent that column from being used in other countries that don't want that column (the US and Canada), but I don't know how other people will react. --Rschen775410:19, 28 June 2013 (UTC)
Makes sense to me. Personally I'm not that fond of coords even for point objects, never mind linear features (as they mean little by themselves, its the tools they enable that are good). There's enough UK roads with few coords, so RJLs can be done without getting bogged down on a secondary issue. If that bigger issue gets resolved and UK starts to converge, then a few months down the line the coords matter can be looked at in isolation.--Nilfanion (talk) 10:34, 28 June 2013 (UTC)
Yeah, politically it's probably best to hope that the current mess dies down as progress was made, and revisit the coordinates issue a while down the road. --Rschen775410:50, 28 June 2013 (UTC)
You probably see the banner at the top of this page and wonder what's going on. I'll try to distill it down to a few points.
Work stress. That's all I'll say about that.
Exhaustion. Both physically and mentally.
Lack of motivation. I'll click the edit link and then have no desire to do what I was going to do.
Annoyance with others. My tolerances of bullshit and derp have been a lot lower than they normally are.
If I come across sounding cranky or curmudgeonly, that's why. Please don't take it personally. So, for now, I'm going to try to wean myself from the wiki and have a life in the meatspace. I have a couple loose ends to tie up before I can actually take a break, though. –Fredddie™14:58, 10 July 2013 (UTC)
Well, I tried to get away but I never really left. I'm still drained, but I've been managing it better. I won't be doing any formal reviewing, like WP:HWY/ACR, for the foreseeable future because of the above. If your article is short, I won't mind copyediting it if you ask nicely and if I know you. –Fredddie™02:51, 12 August 2013 (UTC)

USRD has decided we aren't going to use manually coded tables anymore. They want all pages to be converted to the Jctint series of templates. So can you please revert your edit on Virginia State Route 288? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Philroc (talk • contribs) 10:47, September 20, 2013 (UTC)
I rediscovered my love for making maps the other day. When I first learned how to make them, I was on the SVG bandwagon. That is, I thought every map should be SVG every time. Fast forward to a new version of QGIS and a lack of patience and I have decided that png maps look just as nice. So, I've been chipping away at WP:USRD/MTF/R and Iowa maps that are needed. –Fredddie™03:41, 23 September 2013 (UTC)
When you get a chance, could you add townships to the location column on Interstate 35 in Kansas? The turnpike portion of the list was horrifically inaccurate, so I pasted the relevant part of the turnpike list over it, but that means that we have townships south of Emporia but not north of it. —Scott5114↗[EXACT CHANGE ONLY]20:21, 30 September 2013 (UTC)

If you get a moment, could you see if you could set up the shields on state=TX|type=Both to work on {{jct}} the same way it works on {{infobox road}}? I set up the links and abbrev already (hopefully correctly). I'm converting the TX list to standard so I need the type to work with {{routelist row}}. Thanks! —Scott5114↗[EXACT CHANGE ONLY]01:28, 4 November 2013 (UTC)
Is it really necessary? I mean, |type=Both refers to routes that are part-free and part-tolled. I think it would be a rare case to need it in Jct. –Fredddie™01:56, 4 November 2013 (UTC)
I tried something but it didn't work. I think the only way to get it to display both shields as one file is to merge them in a side-by-side image. –Fredddie™03:55, 4 November 2013 (UTC)
It feels good to clear the cruft from time to time. I just removed 400 articles and pages, a reduction of 60%, from my watchlist. Over the last few days, I have taken a step back and looked at what I have been doing and comparing it to what I want to do. If I get tired of the wiki for the evening, it's no problem. I haven't been commenting on the WP:HWY/IRC channel like I had been for the last five years, but I have been watching it. It feels great not having to put up with other people's self-important bullshit or not pretending to care about ArbCom.
So, if you're reading this, I'm doing just fine doing my own thing. I'm tired, but what else is new? If I said something that hit a little too close to home, maybe you could use a wikibreak, too. This site will operate just fine without you. –Fredddie™04:40, 15 November 2013 (UTC)
Some of you will probably notice that I have disconnected completely from the IRC channel. For now, it's for the best. You may contact me here on my talk page or by email if you so desire. –Fredddie™15:48, 23 November 2013 (UTC)

Since it seems like you're doing a lot of the maintaining on the Infobox Road templates, I just have one small request. Could you add the following line to the above linked template:
|OH 1960=OH-{{{route}}} (1960).svg
I just need it for this article. Only the big shield on the Infobox not displaying is my only issue with getting the 1960 Ohio shields to appear; I've already created the other OH 1960 templates needed for Jct to work properly there. Thanks! —Mr. Matté (Talk/Contrib) 00:53, 23 December 2013 (UTC)

Sadly, yes. However, we (generally speaking) need to work on I-35 in MN and MO so we can connect Kansas Turnpike to the Michigan cluster of FAs. I have already done some research for I-35 IA so I'll work on that. –Fredddie™23:31, 27 December 2013 (UTC)
