20,000 Leagues Under the Sea is an American silent film directed by Stuart Paton and released on December 24, 1916. Based primarily on the 1870 novel Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas by Jules Verne, the film also incorporates elements from Verne's 1875 novel The Mysterious Island. This was the first motion picture filmed underwater. Actual underwater cameras were not used, but a system of watertight tubes and mirrors allowed the camera to shoot reflected images of underwater scenes staged in shallow sunlit waters in the Bahamas. For the scene featuring a battle with an octopus, cinematographer John Ernest Williamson devised a viewing chamber called the "photosphere", a 6-by-10-foot (1.8-by-3.0-metre) steel globe in which a cameraman could be placed. The film was made by the Universal Film Manufacturing Company (now Universal Pictures), not then known as a major motion picture studio, and took two years to make, at the cost of $500,000.Film credit: Stuart Paton

If you remain interested in helping at DRN and are willing to actively do so by taking at least one case (and seeing it through) or helping with administrative matters at least once per calendar month, please add your name to this roll call list. Individuals currently on the principal volunteer list who do not add their name on the roll call list will be removed from the principal volunteer list after June 30, 2016 unless the DRN Coordinator chooses to retain their name for the best interest of DRN or the encyclopedia. Individuals whose names are removed after June 30, 2016, should feel free to re-add their names to the principal volunteer list, but are respectfully requested not to do so unless they are willing to take part at DRN at least one time per month as noted above. The project, WikiProject Wildfire, focuses on articles that relate to wildfires. There is a lot of work that needs to be done. From updating templates, to classifying and improving articles. Any level of commitment is welcome! If you care to just add some input on the founding of the new project, awesome. If you would like to take an active role in editing articles, that is awesome as well! Knowledge of wildfires is NOT a prerequisite for joining the project. In fact, it would be great to have some members of the project who are NOT fire-buffs. That way we make sure that articles aren't just written by and for people in the fire community. If this is something you have any interest in, I would love to have you join the project! Please feel free to join the discussion or leave me a message on my talk page. (Note that you are receiving this message from me because I saw you made multiple edits on a wildfire related page. Not just spamming you at random.) Hope you have a great day! The Interior via MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 23:25, 31 August 2016 (UTC) Extended confirmed protectionHello, Fred Bauder. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy. Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas. In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:
Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you. Books and Bytes - Issue 19Books & Bytes

Your user pageHi Fred, while doing some wikiarchaeology, I found some old edits of a page that you attempted to create as your user page but deleted in January 2004 as "[your] own newbie error". . I have restored the first two edits from the May 2003 dump of the Wikipedia database, so the history is complete – there's no difference between the last imported edit and what was previously the first edit to your user page. Hope you don't mind. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right. It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best. If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 22:08, 21 November 2016 (UTC) Help neededHi Fred Bauder, Bill 28 (British Columbia) which has been law in Canada since the beginning of August, is an important economics/foreign relations article. It has been in the British Columbia (BC) news almost daily since the Bill’s passage, but it appears Americans journalists are just now starting to discover it. The law was introduced with the intention of making owned-and-rented-homes affordable for the average locals / squander money and make politicians look good just before elections, depending on one’s point of view. This omnibus Bill was rushed through the BC legislature, and does things like impose a 15% tax on "foreigners", allow the city of Vancouver (BC) to impose a vacancy tax on homes that are not occupied, and establish a fund for the proceeds. There is no doubt in my mind it will have major repercussions both in Canada and abroad for years. Problem is, I will be going on a long wiki-break soon and will not be able to babysit this article. As it is, I am having trouble just keeping links to current newspaper articles on the talk-page. I am wondering if this is something you have an interest in? Thank you for improving this article. I made a minor change (preceding 'Johnson' with 'President'—see edit summary). In a separate edit I moved the sentence containing "..Johnson attempted no further appearances in public venues.." since that statement is not supported in the cited source. I think that the statement is not strictly true, and should be removed until a proper citation can be found. Since it is such a strong statement, I removed the sentence rather than just replacing the citation with a 'citation needed' tag. I've contributed to the article from time to time, and it is on my watch list, so I will check further on the assertion. There is also the question of what qualifies as a 'public venue', so without a strong with the exact phrase, the sentence should not be included. While I am here: there has been some discussion on the article talk page about globalization of the article and its current emphasis on the anti-Vietnam War movement inside the U.S. What are your thoughts on that? If there should be two articles, one for inside the U.S., and one for the global movement, then what might be possible article names? — Neonorange (talk) 21:55, 12 December 2016 (UTC) Books and Bytes - Issue 20Books & Bytes

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Millfieldlogo.jpgThank you for uploading File:Millfieldlogo.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale. If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator seven days after the file was tagged in accordance with section F7 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. ATTENTION: This is an automated, bot-generated message. This bot DID NOT nominate any file(s) for deletion; please refer to the page history of each individual file for details. It does not imply that there are any issues with your contributions to date. You have recently shown interest in post-1932 politics of the United States and closely related people. Due to past disruption in this topic area, a more stringent set of rules called discretionary sanctions is in effect: any administrator may impose sanctions on editors who do not strictly follow Wikipedia's policies, or any page-specific restrictions, when making edits related to the topic. For additional information, please see the guidance on discretionary sanctions and the Arbitration Committee's decision here. If you have any questions, or any doubts regarding what edits are appropriate, you are welcome to discuss them with me or any other editor. I remain concerned about your editing of articles relating to Donald Trump, most recently Business career of Donald Trump [5]. I do not believe that your editing in relation to this topic area meets Wikipedia's policies, in particular WP:NPOV or WP:BLP. This reflects a pattern of behaviour going back several years, including the following examples: 1, 2, 3. I am therefore formally notifying you that ArbCom discretionary sanctions apply to this topic area as it would be my intention to seek sanctions if you edit such pages inappropriately. I suspect you may have strong feelings in relation to Donald Trump, in which case it might be wise to voluntarily decide to avoid editing articles relating to him. Arbcom case re. desysopFred, I have desysoped you following the multiple self-unblocks. These self-unblocks are really unacceptable to a point where I have done the desysop outside of an Arbcom motion. A tag has been placed on Tombstone Western Film Festival and Symposium requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about an organized event (tour, function, meeting, party, etc.) that does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable. If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. – S. Peter Jackson and I are both active over on Citizendium, where they are having an annoying session timeout issue whereby it's almost always necessary to try twice before an edit can be saved. Peter tells me that you might know something about this kind of sticky wicket issue. All the googling type of advice so far has not solved the problem, having done all the obvious and even searched MediaWiki forums. However, I don't know of any way to contact you except this--so I hope you see this message! If so, could you please be in touch with Peter Jackson somehow and let us exchange emails, perhaps? Wikipedia does not seem to be able to let me message you offline myself. Best regards. Harborsparrow (talk) 20:36, 27 January 2023 (UTC)
