Recent edit/undo on 31st Augurst 2010 regarding South African Game Development on "Game development"

Hi Chris,

I'm the owner of "South African Game Development" / sagamedev.com

I recently added an external link on the wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_development

The link was to help South Africans interested in the subject matter to find www.sagamedev.com I see the update got undone.

Is the article an inappropriate place to add the link? If it is, which article will be an appropriate place?

Wikipedia gets a lot of additions of links to other websites by users trying to advertise their site. Wikipedia is not the place to do this. Please take a look at the policy at WP:EL. I think the link was removed unjustly since SAGD has done allot to promote game development in Southern Africa, and it is still doing allot. In my books it is no different than what gamedev.net or any of the other game development sites is doing. Sure. Except what GameDev and the other sites do is international, widely recongnized within the game industry, etc. Wikipedia is an international encyclopedia, not a South African encyclopedia. Just allowing your site would open the floodgates for a German game development site, Spanish, French, Brazilian, etc. Plus, I notice your only activity on Wikipedia is to edit my talk page. So I suspect that you are a sock puppet for Korax1978. If not, you are at least a friend or other ally. And your user page says you even own a similar website.

I support South African game development as well as any and all African game development since the industry is still in early stages. I accept and respect your explanation but I will advice you to refrain from personal attacks. Korax has done allot to improve game development in our part of the world. I do belong to a religious organization, but it has no impact on why I reverted your edit. I make a number of helpful edits on subjects which I am opposed to or don't agree with—I try not to let my personal opinions get in the way of NPOV, one of the pillars here on Wikipedia. And I'm not opposed to the content of your edit. The reason I reverted it is because it appeared to be complete original research, something forbidden on Wikipedia. If you have a verifiable, reliable reference for your statement, fine, include it and I—as well as other editors who have also reverted your change—won't be so inclined to revert it.

You want to report me to the admins? Fine, please do so. I'm a Senior Editor here with over 8 years of contributions, and I've garnered nothing but praise. Majesty: The Fantasy Kingdom Sim

Hail. I'm in need of a third opinion regarding the description of the RTS game Majesty. It's a delightful one: it takes the tropes and genre conventions of RPG cities and adds them to a different genre. The player is the king of a realm littered with evil lairs and inexplicable treasure chests. His soldiers are useless against monsters, forcing him to hire heroes, who are controlled by offering quest rewards. Every hero has a name, level, inventory and stats. Taxes for things like healing potion sales are a major part of the economy. A cliché storm. This was described (tersely) in the game's article until an anon changed it "to make it more objective and Wiki-like, and less of somepmegame review." The new version is frankly horrible, but in the interest of fairness and honing my skills and soppiness I'd like to ask if you think the anon's complaints are valid. Personally, I don't see anything that would be subjective or review-like, and as for "wiki-like," moving away from the general state of our prose is to be desired...

I addressed this message to you on the grounds that you were the first regular with RPGs in their edit history that I found. You can bring up issues like this on the article's talk page, but looking at the two edits, yours seemed a little subjective and, frankly, I found it confusing. I'm not familiar with this game, so I really can't comment beyond that. All content contributed to Wikipedia should be free from bias and from a neutral point of view. I can, but getting an answer within a reasonable time is another thing. Thanks for yours! I don't think my description is subjective (the statements are immediately apparent from the work without specialist knowledge) but I must concede confusing. Majesty's concept is simple enough, but it and its sequel are the only games of their kind. I'll have to write a more elaborate description that'll clarify the mechanics for readers unfamiliar with the game, and I think I can dig up a couple of cites to back it up. --Kizor 08:05, 30 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Game development tool OR

Sorry, normally I am (provably) the first to keep as much content as possible and add cn tags or others, and try to get such sections improved. But in this case, it was such an "extremely" blanket, unsourced (and probably unsourceable) statement that had been unchanged in almost 2 years, that I didn't see any chance for saving it. You may have noticed that I responded to the IP responding to the IP. Only on second look I realized just how bad the section was, on so many levels. Feel free to differ (I won't revert), but I really don't think it is possible to provide any kind of reliable source on what kinds of tools actual game developers (and not just the odd one here and the odd one there, and the one or two who make their tools public) are using and in what languages they write them. If you'd rather keep it the way it is, perhaps you could help in toning it down a little; I wouldn't know where to start and what would be left once the OR, "extreme" language and vague claims are gone: "This makes sense since,", "This is because", "an extremely RAD language", "often needed", "extremely quickly", "most popular" -- Nczempin (talk) 17:36, 29 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I don't develop video games anymore, but I'm still friends with many people who do and overwhelmingly they use C# for their tool creation. But I don't have a verifiable ref to back it up. Well, it is better for the second paragraph of the section; you didn't touch the first one. But doesn't it strike you that now the second paragraph is not really saying anything? You do realize that your friends, no matter how copious (with all due respect, I doubt that they are a valid cross-section of the entire world-wide community of game-developers, both hobby, independent and commercial, in the US, Europe, Japan and elsewhere), are not sufficient evidence to support the statements. If we had anything like a GDC, Gamasutra or Game Developer survey "what language(s) do you use to develop your tools" it would at least be a start. In the end, does it even matter what the tools are written in? Does it really add that much value to the article to know that tools are pretty much written in any language that it makes sense to write tools in? -- Nczempin (talk) 18:37, 29 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Guild of Copy Editors March 2011 backlog elimination drive report Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors March 2011 Backlog elimination drive. Thank you for participating in the March 2011 drive! This newsletter summarizes the March drive and other recent events. Participation GOCE March 2011 backlog elimination drive progress graphs There were 99 signups for the drive; of these, 70 participated. Interest was high mainly due to a link to our event from the Watchlist page. We had a record-breaking 84 articles listed on the Requests page in March; 11 of these have been promoted to Good article status so far. Several of our recent efforts have received Featured Article status as well, and the GOCE is becoming a solid resource for the Wikipedia community. Since you are the creator of the page Fluorescent lamp can you please sort out User:Wtshymanski's argumentative comments and him himself because he keeps deleting content I own and my text that I upload to the page that's true and what I see in a well enough way for it to be reliable. He has also been doing so to too many other scientist users that edit that page. You might as well block him from editing this particular page but do not block me, as that argument was not my fault, it's his because he started it. Template:Inline at Mother and Child Reunion (Degrassi: The Next Generation)

Hi, Frecklefoot. I've removed the {{inline}} tag that you placed in the references section of Mother and Child Reunion (Degrassi: The Next Generation). I've done this because when I wrote the article I followed practices at WP:SFN, using short citations. Refs 2, 7, 10, 15, 16, and more use Kathryn Ellis' book as a source, and they are inline citations. If you have an issue with this style, it's better to take it up at WT:CITE rather than slap a tag on Today's Featured Article, which looks very unprofessional. Parenthetical sentences

Hi. I noticed your edits at Stradivarius and wanted to mention that some authorities, such as the Chicago Manual of Style as I recall, suggest that parenthetical remarks consisting of full sentences be written as separate sentences in parentheses when possible. (This is an example.) They make an exception for short formulaic sentences such as "(see page 47)". I'm used to this recommendation and strongly prefer it, but I usually don't change the other style here because both are accepted.

Of course, you later changed the parenthesis to a footnote, which I thought was a good solution. I'm just pointing out that both styles have their advocates. —JerryFriedman (Talk) 16:43, 6 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
