WikiProject Eurovision Newsletter - June 2009
Note: the Newsletter is "collapsed" for convenience. To see the full letter, click on the "show" button at the right end of the gray bar.
There are now over 2,800 articles associated with the project (100 more than last month) and all are assessed. If you happen to see a Eurovision related article without the {{EurovisionNotice}} template on the article's talk page, please add it. You can also read Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Assessment if you would like to help reassess articles in our project if you see that they have outgrown their current assessment.
Following recent disputes relating to sourcing in Eurovision articles, an RfC has been opened on the issue at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Eurovision#RfC on reliable sources for Eurovision articles. The dispute particularly focuses on use of ESCToday and Oikotimes as sources in articles. The RfC is suffering from lack of participation; all project members are encouraged to state their opinion.
Project members are reminded that text and images in articles must follow Wikipedia's copyright policies. Text must not be copied out or copied and pasted into articles from websites whose material is not under a Wikipedia compatible free license. Fully copyrighted text includes that from the EBU (Eurovision.tv), ESCToday, and Okiotimes. Images must also not be uploaded onto Wikimedia Commons for use in Eurovision articles unless they are under a free license, this does not include most images on the internet or TV screen shots even if they were taken by the uploader. Copyrighted images may be uploaded onto the English Wikipedia (not Commons) for use in Eurovision articles if a valid claim of fair use can be made, note that the criteria are strict.
Welcome to the eleventh edition of the WikiProject Eurovision Newsletter!
Things are beginning to quiet down now that the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest is behind us, which is the project's busiest time of year. A few of us however still had to slow down during this period, including myself, as May and June also happens to be exam season in multiple parts of the world. There is much still to be done in any case with preparations for the 2010 Song Contest now well under way, and the host city, Oslo, now confirmed.
There are several items that this project needs to debate including choices of sourcing and what contests come under the banner of this project. The first of these items is already being addressed at a new RfC (see left). Further ideas that could be developed include creation of some article guidelines for Eurovision articles. This could start as an advisory essay and then later, if consensus permits, become an official Wikipedia guideline. Examples of these already in existence include Wikipedia:WikiProject Schools/Article guidelines and Wikipedia:WikiProject Video games/Article guidelines.
Do you have any preference as to which you'd rather do? An FL would be easier for me, I think, but I'm sure we can find some stubby articles to expand so I'm open to either. Matthewedwards : Chat 05:47, 1 July 2009 (UTC)
It's one or the other, as far as I know. We'd better get our skates on. From what I gather from User talk:Shappy/Amazing Race Wikipedia#Round 1, some people have already completed it, and we both have to work on the pages: "Do keep in mind that you do need to work together. ;) Meetare Shappy Cunkelfratz! 7:09 am, Today (UTC−7)" Matthewedwards : Chat 16:20, 1 July 2009 (UTC)
"The only confusion was, I think we all thought they were women. Kim was obviously a woman, but they all had this shaved-headed, pretty, soft look. And there were lots of lesbian bands at the time, and we always got booked with them, so we just thought the Pixies were another, like maybe they were like angry divorcees or somthing that formed a band.'" - Kristin Hersh
Some did well this week, but a lot of you didn't move much. Some are still hanging under the 200 mark. Our current top 8 are all over 200, so if you are below that line, get moving! There is a poll up at the talk page about the rest of this year's competition. If all of you could give your opinion there, it would be very much appreciated.

Hi Garden. I just wanted to thank you for contributing to my RfA. It wasn't one of the best RfA's held, but I've learned a lot from the experience. Sorry for sending you the message today, and not last week when my RfA was closed. I've been very busy the last time. Thanks once again! Kind regards, LouriePieterse10:21, 6 July 2009 (UTC)

There were a few mistakes in last weeks' newsletter. Apologies about that. In regards to the competition, a few of you shot up in points this week. Very, very impressive. However, now that some have shot up to the top, others of you have to work even harder to catch up! There are about 3 weeks left in the round, so if you're behind, now is really the time to start nominating content, so that it can count for this round. If you wait too long, we won't be able to hold off the round while your content is being reviewed.
Per this tiny poll, the remainder of the competition has been altered.. sorry!! The changes being made are as follows: "We will be combining the last three rounds. Round 4 will now last from August through September, with 8 contestants. On September 1st, however, we will eliminate the bottom four contestants. The top four contestants will continue the round with the same score. Then, one person will win out of the remaining four on September 30th." You can also see this change to the main WikiCup page.

Welcome aboard. I'm thinking of getting things going again this winter. But if there's a more urgent need to feed, I'm willing to move up the date. Cheers. ChildofMidnight (talk) 19:30, 13 July 2009 (UTC)
yo, hope the summer is going well. Stylus doesn't need italics. It's not a print publication and Ealdgyth is anal about these things. Rafablu8818:52, 13 July 2009 (UTC)
Feel free to weigh in on the "the band is/are" discussion. I'm pretty sure BrEng always uses plural for everything. NME, BBC etc. do it. Rafablu8823:44, 14 July 2009 (UTC)
Hello all, iMatthew here. I just wanted to let you know about "The Great Wikipedia Dramaout" which starts this Saturday. The goal of the Dramaout is to spend five days working on improving articles and abstaining from any of Wikipedia's drama. I don't think that any of you will have a problem focusing on articles for five days, because of course, any work you get done during the Dramaout will count towards your score in the WikiCup. Details are on the page; hope to see you all signing up! :) iMatthewtalk at 00:27, 17 July 2009 (UTC)

As an administrator, I thought you might be able to guide me with a couple of problems I feel this page has:
The transformation - I feel that this paragraph needs to be sorted out, but not sure which is the best option:
Removed entirely (but probably not, as obviously an editor thought it was important enough to warrent a section)
Merged into the previous section
Expanded, using the cited resource
Notable alumni - is it me, or should the fact that *none* of these have a wikipedia article make them non-notable for anyone outside of the school's alumni association or the local area? I have looked up all of them, hoping to find wiki links, but none of them are there. What is wikipedia's position on this? Should they remain even though they are not notable?
The rest of the article is good from what I can see (I could probably add a couple of links such as to President Marcos, etc, but nothing majorly wrong with it).
About two weeks left, now. To those of you in the back, don't give up. There is still enough time to get some more work done. To those of you in the front relaxing... don't. We've seen it happen before, where users in the back will jump ahead in the final weeks and make it though.
We'd also like to wave goodbye to Scorpion0422, and thank him for all of his hard work this round even though he knew he needed to withdraw at the end of it.

Occurs one year after an event (making a nonsense of "one month anniversary"), this year's UK Big Brother is occurring nine years after the first Big Brother, not ten. Next year will be the tenth anniversary, this year is just BB10. It is a common error, see WrestleMania XXV (which confused 25 years with a 25th anniversary). You are not one year old the day you are born, your first birthday celebrates the anniversary of your birth. Darrenhusted (talk) 22:00, 19 July 2009 (UTC)
Thank you again for your support of the Great Wikipedia Dramaout. Preliminary states indicate that 129 new articles were created, 203 other articles were improved, and 183 images were uploaded. Additionally, 41 articles were nominated for DYK, of which at least 2 have already been promoted. There are currently also 8 articles up for GA status and 3 up for FA/FL status. Though the campaign is technically over, please continue to update the log page at WP:NODRAMA/L with any articles which you worked during the campaign, and also to note any that receive commendation, such as DYK, GA or FA status. You may find the following links helpful in nominating your work:
Sorry to trouble you! As you can see on my page, ive been looking for an adopter to mentor me to develop my skills and contribute more significantly to the Wiki cause. I stuck my name down on the list for adoption, but as you can probably expect, there is a backlog and it might be a while before someone offers adoption... ...So anyway I pluck up the courage to find myself an adopter, and came across yourself. Are you still adopting? I noticed your name (or, rather, your old name) on the list and thought that you might be the best person to help me with my current projects, whilst helping me out with Wiki policy aspects (AfD etc etc etc). And, hey, I can also regale you with airport/travel stories. Not much of a music person though, though cant complain about your tastes... Hope to hear from you soon, one way or the other MacarismTalk11:46, 25 July 2009 (UTC)
The round is over in about four days from now. Sit back, watch your nominations being reviewed, and hope for the best. In these four days, you don't have much control over your score. It's what you did prior to now, that's going to pile up your points (or not). We're very, very pleased with this round's results so far, and of course hoping to see some more submitted before the round ends.

Welcome to pedants paradise. Don't think we're getting the FT. I've got a template ready for the remix albums if need be. If you want to help then follow:
Conception and Promotion (one paragraph who they got to do it and maybe why (i.e. a favourite band, similar genre, a tour buddy, etc.) and one paragraph how they promoted it (touring, news releases like usual))
Critical reviews like usual (two para, one good one bad)
Composition (do your usual biz here)
The rest like Intimacy, which is smaller. (Two para. lead etc.)
Hey, if you don't mind, I wanted to leave up the current info for at least about a day. Tomorrow night, we can worry about moving things to the right places, and all that. iMatthewtalk at 00:30, 30 July 2009 (UTC)
I think I got everything. Tomorrow, do you think you can write the "From the judges" section of the newsletter, then send it off? (It's newsletter 27, BTW) -- Include a note about the change in Round 4 (now it ends Oct 31). iMatthewtalk at 01:22, 31 July 2009 (UTC)
You deleted quite a few entries when you added your DYK submission? Just to let you know in the hope that you might know how it happened? Regards, Woody (talk) 21:50, 30 July 2009 (UTC)
A discussion regarding an unblock of a user you previously blocked is underway at WP:AN. Your input would be valuable here. See [2]. --Jayron3219:23, 31 July 2009 (UTC)
Right, last newsletter before the next round and it's a congratulations to eight of you lot. Unfortunately we say goodbye to a fair few users along the way but that is the competition. Next round, there will only be one pool which will see the lowest scoring users eliminated two months into the round. Should be good fun! Get your nominations in soon!

The RfC on article sourcing was closed by Moonriddengirl (talk·contribs) as an uninvolved editor. The decisions were for each source:
ESCToday: Reliable
ESCKaz: Semi-reliable
ESCTime: Not reliable
Oikotimes: No consensus
More details on the decision as well as the full RfC can be found on the project talk page. The decisions made in the RfC will likely impact on future drafts of the article guidelines. Please note that further use of Oikotimes and ESCTime is discouraged and existing uses should be replaced with reliable sources. If no other source exists for the information, leave the current source for the time being.
Due to a new naming convention relating to the use of the term "FYR Macedonia", the Republic of Macedonia should be referred to as "Macedonia" in Eurovision articles. Mention of the country's participation in the Contest under the name "FYR Macedonia" should be written in the lead of articles such as Macedonia in the Eurovision Song Contest, though it is not necessary to express this fact in the general Contest articles.
Two months after the 2009 Contest ended, the EBU revealed the full jury and televoting results for each country on its website. The results showed that Norway was the winner of both the jury and the televoting, while many placings would have changed had no jury voting taken place.
Georgia announced its return to the Contest, while the Czech Republic will withdraw from the 2010 Contest.
Welcome to the twelfth edition of the WikiProject Eurovision Newsletter!
It has been a very slow couple of months in terms of Eurovision news since the passing of the 2009 Contest, however, it has been a very busy time for guidelines and policies affecting our project. Landmark decisions have been made regarding our use of sources and even how we are to refer to Macedonia. In addition, several of our Good Articles have been delisted as part of a task force charged with maintaining the quality of Wikipedia's Good Articles.
With there being less information to add and therefore less to do for some, we need to focus on the upkeep and quality of our project's articles and getting those inactive members active once again. We can do this by making sure all new guidelines and naming policies are adhered to and by working to move articles up the quality scale. We are a WikiProject and we all work towards a similar goal. Introduce yourself to your fellow members and get active!
