All are invited, with no specialized knowledge of the subject or Wikipedia editing experience required.
Expanding coverage of Jewish women on Wikipedia makes these women and their creations discoverable, addresses the gender bias on Wikipedia in a positive way, and works to correct imbalances archival collecting practice and institutional projects that have historically silenced women's narratives.
A training session on editing Wikipedia will be held at 12:30 pm. Experienced Wikipedians will be on-hand to assist throughout the day. Please bring your laptop and power cord; we will have library resources, WiFi, and a list of suggested topics on hand.

Hello everyone, welcome to the June 2016 GOCE newsletter. It's been a few months since we sent one out; we hope y'all haven't forgotten about the Guild! Your coordinators have been busy behind the scenes as usual, though real life has a habit of reducing our personal wiki-time. The May backlog reduction drive, the usual coordinating tasks and preparations for the June election are keeping us on our toes!
May drive: Thanks to everyone who participated in last month's record-setting backlog reduction drive. Of the 29 people who signed up, 16 copyedited at least one article, 197 copyedits were recorded on the drive page, and the copyedit backlog fell below 1,500 for the first time! Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.
June Blitz: this one-week copy-editing blitz will occur from 12 June through 18 June; the themes will be video games and Asian geography.
Coordinator elections:
It's election time again; how quickly they seem to roll around! Nominations for the next tranche of Guild coordinators, who will serve a six-month term that begins at 00:01 UTC on 1 July and ends at 23:59 UTC on 31 December, opens at 00:01 UTC on 1 June and closes at 23:59 UTC on 15 June. Voting takes place between 00:01 UTC on 16 June and 23:59 UTC on 30 June. If you'd like to assist behind the scenes, please consider stepping forward; self-nominations are welcomed and encouraged. All Wikipedia editors in good standing are eligible; remember it's your Guild, and it doesn't run itself!

Visiting Special:Notifications doesn't automatically mark notifications as read anymore. You can go between read, unread or all notifications on Special:Notifications. Notifications on Special:Notifications are grouped by day. You can mark every daily group as read individually. Notifications are displayed by groups of 50 on Special:Notifications and you can find former notifications by using navigation arrows. [5][6][7][8]

Notifications were not always marked as read when you followed a link from an email notification. This will now happen. [11]

The list of other languages an article is available in will be shorter on small Wikipedias and non-Wikipedia projects. This is to make it easier to find the most relevant languages for each user. You will still be able to see the other languages. [12][13]

The ORES service has now moved to a new location. This should make it easier to use ORES. The ORES review service is now available as a beta feature on Wikidata and Persian Wikipedia. ORES is an artificial intelligence system for Wikimedia wikis to help editors. [16]
The order of wikis in collapsed cross-wiki notifications was different than when the list was expanded. This is now fixed. [17]

Future changes
The Collaboration team at the Wikimedia Foundation will look at developing better tools for edit review. This is because research suggests we scare away newcomers who want to help. [22]
An e-mail from the Editing Department explains the technical work that is planned and being researched for the future. Items include better wikitext and visual editing, prompts for edits, language improvements, annotations, and meta-data separation. [23]
The sorting of Notifications into the two fly-out menus is going to change on July 5 to 7. Bundled notifications should be easier to explore and mark as read individually. [24][25][26]
From 29 June git.wikimedia.org (running Gitblit) will redirect all requests to Phabricator. The vast majority of requests should be correctly redirected. [27]
Catalan and Polish Wikipedias will have Wikidata descriptions added to articles in the mobile view by default. This is currently a beta option for the mobile versions. This might come to other wikis later. [28]
@Keilana: Your prose was quite good, actually! Far, far better than a lot of the articles I've copyedited. Place the cursor where you want to display the references list (usually at the bottom of the page). Open the "Insert" menu and click the "References list" icon (three books).
If you are using several groups of references, which is relatively rare, you will have the opportunity to specify the group. If you do that, then only the references that belong to the specified group will be displayed in this list of references.
Finally, click "Insert" in the dialog to insert the References list. This list will change as you add more footnotes to the page.
You can read and help translate the user guide, which has more information about how to use the visual editor.
Since the last newsletter, the VisualEditor team has fixed many bugs. Their workboard is available in Phabricator. Their current priorities are improving support for Arabic and Indic scripts, and adapting the visual editor to the needs of the Wikivoyages and Wikisources.
Recent changes
The visual editor is now available to all users at most Wikivoyages. It was also enabled for all contributors at the French Wikinews.
The single edit tab feature combines the "Edit" and "Edit source" tabs into a single "Edit" tab. It has been deployed to several Wikipedias, including Hungarian, Polish, English and Japanese Wikipedias, as well as to all Wikivoyages. At these wikis, you can change your settings for this feature in the "Editing" tab of Special:Preferences. The team is now reviewing the feedback and considering ways to improve the design before rolling it out to more people.
Future changes
The "Save page" button will say "Publish page". This will affect both the visual and wikitext editing systems. More information is available on Meta.
The team is working with the volunteer developers who power Wikisource to provide the visual editor there, for opt-in testing right now and eventually for all users. (T138966)
The team is working on a modern wikitext editor. It will look like the visual editor, and be able to use the citoid service and other modern tools. This new editing system may become available as a Beta Feature on desktop devices around September 2016. You can read about this project in a general status update on the Wikimedia mailing list.

Coordinator elections:
The second tranche of Guild coordinators for 2016, who will serve a six-month term until 23:59 UTC on 31 December, have been elected.
Jonesey95 remains as your drama-free Lead Coordinator, and Corinne and Tdslk are your new assistant coordinators. For her long service to the Guild, Miniapolis has been enrolled in the GOCE Hall of Fame. Thanks to everyone who voted in the election; our next scheduled one occurs in December 2016. All Wikipedia editors in good standing are eligible; self-nominations are welcome and encouraged.
July Drive:
Our month-long July Copy Editing Backlog Elimination Drive is now underway. Our aim is to remove articles tagged for copy-edit in April, May and June 2015, and to complete all requests on the GOCE Requests page from June 2016. The drive ends at 23:59 on 31 July 2016 (UTC).

A daily email summary of notifications could be sent even when there were no notifications from the wiki. Now no email will be sent if there is no activity. [29]

The "⧼citoid-citefromidtool-title⧽" button in the visual editor's toolbar will move into the "Insert" menu except for Wikipedias, Wikibookses and Wikiversities. This is to make it less prominent on wikis that don't use it as much. [30]

Recent changes
A new image scaler fixed a number of bugs for showing SVG files. Some new problems turned up. [31][32][33]
Notifications are grouped by types. They are now counted by number of notifications and not by unread groups. That change may increase the number of notifications displayed. The earlier way of counting was often incorrect. Unread notifications will also be displayed first. [34][35][36]
Special:Notifications now has a maximum width for the notifications list on desktop computers. This allows long titles and descriptions to be cut properly. Notifications are now also better parsed. [37][38][39]
Problems
On 5 July Wikimedia Commons had problems and could not be edited for 20 minutes. For a short while after that the recent changes log and some gadgets were not working properly. It affected administrative actions on other projects too. [40]
Users who have multiple unread notifications can mark them as read by visiting Special:Notifications page on their wiki.

I'd like to ask here, what your current impression is about how many or few of your fellow Oversighters are willing to take on the role that I've been thinking out loud about in those discussions: being available to receive, privately, personal evidence for COI cases, evaluate it, and post at COIN something like "confirmed" or "not confirmed". --Tryptofish (talk) 18:40, 22 July 2016 (UTC)
@Tryptofish: I think the OS team is in a smaller version of the same indecision we're seeing in the community at large about the whole issue: some people are all for taking on the task because they think the OS team is the appropriate venue, some people are grudgingly willing to do it because it's the lesser of the two evils compared to having the community do it onwiki, and some people are dead-set against doing it at all. I don't think we're currently in a situation where we can say "the OS team has consensus to do this, start sending stuff to them", but we may be able to, in the near-ish term, get to something like "here's an OS team subcommittee that agreed to handle these cases".
Even then, though, that's not something we can just declare exists - there's no point "creating" something like that without a plan for who's doing the work and how they're doing it. At a minimum, we'd need to get a community and/or internal-OS-team discussion going about the creation of a subcommittee like that, particularly because it's not clear to me right now whether the OSers/arbs who definitely do not want to do such investigations are speaking personally - "nope, I didn't sign up for that work, but I don't care if you want to overwork yourself" - or generally - "no, it is improper for the OS team to touch this because [legal reasons|privacy|whatever]". Obviously if it's the latter, there's a bigger issue there, and handling COI evidence isn't just something other OSers could decide to start doing while others object on that kind of basis. And then there's the part where we'd probably also want some kind of community RfC (another one, shudder...) about what would constitute adequate confirmation evidence for that subcommittee's purposes, but I imagine that would come after we at least determine whether the OS team will take it on in the first place. OK, thanks very much, that was what I suspected, but I wanted to know beyond just my hunch. I think that can be made to work. (If you want, you can see some discussion with Opabinia about this at my user talk.) What I am very tentatively thinking about is having an all-volunteer group drawn from the Functionaries in good standing, so that would include some Oversighters, Checkusers, and Arbs, but only those who would like to get involved. What you tell me about the Oversighters sounds compatible with that. And I totally agree with you about process, in the event of me making a proposal. I would make a draft in my user space, and ask Functionaries to evaluate it before I would attempt any community RfC (more details at my talk). --Tryptofish (talk) 18:19, 25 July 2016 (UTC)

In notifications, the icon for Notices has been changed from a speech-bubble icon () to a tray icon () for consistency. The Alerts icon has been redesigned too. The colors have been changed for accessibility. [60]
Problems
If you use the wikEd gadget, changes you made were not kept when you switched from the wikitext editor to the visual editor while you were editing. This has now been fixed. [61]
Changes this week
Wikimedia search will now ignore question marks at the end of the sentences or words you use when you search. Until now the question mark was just a wildcard. [62]
On Commons, UploadWizard will now be available on mobile, rather than just the old upload form. This should reduce the workload for the community in reviewing images. [63]
When you edit with the visual editor a puzzle symbol tells you there is an invisible template in the article. It will now mention the name of the template. [64]
The button to read something in another language will move for mobile users. This will happen on 9 August. [65]
When someone mentions you and links to your user page you get a notification. You will now get a notification when you mention yourself this way. [66]
