Mentoring students: be sure to check in on themThis message is going out to all of the Online Ambassadors who are, or will be, serving as mentors this term. Hi there! This is just a friendly reminder to check in on what your mentees are doing. If they've started making edits, take a look and help them out or do some example fixes for them, if they need it. And if they are doing good, let them know it! If you aren't mentoring anyone yet, it looks like you will be soon; at least one large class is asking us to assign mentors for them, and students in a number of others haven't yet gotten to asking ambassadors to be their mentors, but may soon. --Sage Ross - Online Facilitator, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 20:06, 21 February 2011 (UTC) nom nomFor nice work with a tricky situation on IRC, you get a cookie. Well deserved. has given you a cookie! Cookies promote WikiLove and hopefully this one has made your day better. Online Ambassador ProgramPlease take a look at this project page and see if you can be a mentor to one of the many Areas of Study. If you can, please put your name in the "Online Mentor" area of the Area of Study of your choice and then contact the students you will be working with. As the Coordinating Online Ambassador for this project, please let me know if I can be of assistance. Take Care...Neutralhomer • Talk • 04:28, 3 March 2011 (UTC) Marking articles students are working onHowdy, Online Ambassador! This is a quick message to all the ambassadors about marking and tracking which articles students are working on. For the classes working with the ambassador program, please look over any articles being worked on by students (in particular, any ones you are mentoring, but others who don't have mentors as well) and do these things:
And of course, don't forget to check in on the students, give them constructive feedback, praise them for positive contributions, award them {{The WikiPen}} if they are doing excellent work, and so on. And if you haven't done so, make sure any students you are mentoring are listed on your mentor profile. Thanks! --Sage Ross - Online Facilitator, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 18:11, 15 March 2011 (UTC) Editing Fridays article for 25 March

I have been working with a High School student on his first article and he was trying to trouble shoot what he had done when he added the gallery. It was an improperly placed "}}" when he moved the gallery location and did not "preview" the edit. Sorry we were moving so slow. I did revert the reference list back to the previous format per WP:LDR since that was much easier for Andy to read and edit that the more traditional reference style. Just wanted to let you know why I did it... Thanks --Gene Hobbs (talk) 17:38, 25 May 2011 (UTC)
Horacio GutierrezI seriously want to know what makes you so obsessively and repeatedly change the article about Horacio Gutierrez? Has he offended or harm you in any way? If you want to create a valuable and helpful article about a pianist, why don't you do some real research instead of posting some cheap information about his health problems. Also , posting the press articles about his cancellations instead of posting a few great reviews , which Mr.Gutierrez receives from all major music critics , also makes me think that instead of creating a helpful Wiki Article about a pianist, you want to create a page with information more suitable for cheap newsstand papers. This information is not helpful in any way for a person interested in Gutierrez's music. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 38.125.58.89 (talk) 16:56, 31 May 2011 (UTC) Vandalism patch up jobsHi. Yes point taken. Usually when dealing with a topic in which I have no specialist knowledge I just do a quick patch up job on the more obvious, recent edits and hope that the experts will tackle longer term or more subtle problems. Obviously this approach is not ideal, and prehaps I should think twice before touching articles that have clear long term issues. The trouble is, when ploughing through dozens of edits on vandalism patrol, and without specialist knowledge it's not always easy to spot longer term problems. Advice on this would be welcome. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Prunesqualer (talk • contribs) 14:35, 1 June 2011 (UTC)

I've tried to use the talk page but my posted are deleted from there and the page continues to be changed by someone else. Obviously they don't want to talk about it and only want to have an edit war. I've tried to have other mods lock the article but they havent taken action. It's blatant vandalism. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.47.11.81 (talk) 18:26, 19 July 2011 (UTC) Is this going to be corrected? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.47.11.81 (talk) 18:45, 19 July 2011 (UTC)
I can't dispute this with a biased editor who only wants to further someone's image instead of provide accurate information. The article is locked anyway. I didn't think that it would take a genius to see that he hasn't served in the Rhodesian military. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.47.11.81 (talk) 18:57, 19 July 2011 (UTC) I already posted this issue in the discussion a few days ago by the way. Instead of a dicussion it was deleted and the article was continually vandalized. What do you suggest I do? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.47.11.81 (talk) 19:09, 19 July 2011 (UTC)

Ann Rule's Wikipedia Site re: Rick SwartI am the web author for Ann Rule. I am not a Wikipedia editor. Friday July 22nd was my first time trying to interact within Wikipedia on a level other than just reading various topics. I saw an entry on Ann Rule's Wikipedia site that was "Contentious material about living persons that is unsourced or poorly sourced must be removed immediately, especially if potentially libelous or harmful." I found a way to remove it. I now know there are more proper (and quite well documented) ways to go about addressing this sort of thing. Rick Swart's References on Ann Rule's Wikipedia site need to be removed. It has been discovered by the "source" (Seattle Weekly)and by one of Wikipedia editors that Rick Swart's article was at least flawed and "Contentious material about living persons that is unsourced or poorly sourced". Please remove the 2 links on Ann Rule's Wikipedia Reference Section. They are truly more about Rick Swart than Ann Rule. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Raineywebtech (talk • contribs) 01:27, 24 July 2011 (UTC)

Ambassador Program: assessment driveEven though it's been quiet on-wiki, the Wikipedia Ambassador Program has been busy over the last few months getting ready for the next term. We're heading toward over 80 classes in the US, across all disciplines. You'll see courses start popping up here, and this time we want to match one or more Online Ambassadors to each class based on interest or expertise in the subject matter. If you see a class that you're interested, please contact the professor and/or me; the sooner the Ambassadors and professors get in communication, the better things go. Look for more in the coming weeks about next term. In the meantime, with a little help I've identified all the articles students did significant work on in the last term. Many of the articles have never been assessed, or have ratings that are out of date from before the students improved them. Please help assess them! Pick a class, or just a few articles, and give them a rating (and add a relevant WikiProject banner if there isn't one), and then update the list of articles. Once we have updated assessments for all these articles, we can get a better idea of how quality varied from course to course, and which approaches to running Wikipedia assignments and managing courses are most effective. --Sage Ross - Online Facilitator, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 17:24, 27 July 2011 (UTC) New user in need of some helpHi Fluffernutter, there is a new user who needs a guardian angel, someone who would help with good intentions, and is unlikely to turn to stalking. Conflicts of interest -- practices for editors and what's good for Wikipedia?Hi -- Heard your wikimania talk on editors with conflicts-of-interest. I tried to start a discussion on this at Wikipedia_talk:Best_practices_for_editors_with_conflicts_of_interest and put an example COI statement on my user page. Nobody replied. I'd be happy to collect examples of how editors handle this, make a list, work with others to define a standard good practice. If you can point me to an appropriate place to write it I'll get started. My own attempt flopped! so please lead in a constructive direction. My conflicts are relatively trivial but the general topic is interesting and relevant. Possibly I'll want to avoid a vast policy discussion and just research existing practices and recommend for and against some. -- Econterms (talk) 10:10, 6 August 2011 (UTC) |
