This is the second issue of the Wikipedia Ambassador Program Newsletter, with details about what's going on right now and where help is needed.


  • Userboxes and profiles - Add an ambassador userbox to your page, and make sure you've added your mentor profile!
  • Be a coordinating ambassador - Pick and class and make sure no students fall through the cracks.
  • New screencasts - Short videos on watchlists and a number of other topics may be useful to students.
  • Updates from Campus Ambassadors - Ambassadors are starting to report on classroom experiences, both on-wiki and on the Google Group.
  • Other news - There's a new on-wiki application for being an Online Ambassador, and Editing Friday #2 is today!
  • Things you can do - This is just a sample; if you're eager for something to do, there's plenty more.

Hi there! This is just a friendly reminder to check in on what your mentees are doing. If they've started making edits, take a look and help them out or do some example fixes for them, if they need it. And if they are doing good, let them know it!

Marking articles students are working on

Howdy, Online Ambassador!

This is a quick message to all the ambassadors about marking and tracking which articles students are working on. For the classes working with the ambassador program, please look over any articles being worked on by students (in particular, any ones you are mentoring, but others who don't have mentors as well) and do these things:

  1. Add {{WAP assignment | term = Spring 2011 }} to the articles' talk pages. (The other parameters of the {{WAP assignment}} template are helpful, so please add them as well, but the term = Spring 2011 one is most important.)
  2. If the article is related to United States public policy, make sure the article the WikiProject banner is on the talk page: {{WikiProject United States Public Policy}}
  3. Add Category:Article Feedback Pilot (a hidden category) to the article itself. The second phase of the Article Feedback Tool project has started, and this time we're trying to include all of the articles students are working on. Please test out the Article Feedback Tool, as well. The new version just deployed, so any bug reports or feedback will be appreciated by the tech team working on it.

And of course, don't forget to check in on the students, give them constructive feedback, praise them for positive contributions, award them {{The WikiPen}} if they are doing excellent work, and so on. And if you haven't done so, make sure any students you are mentoring are listed on your mentor profile.

The Guild of Copy Editors – May 2011 Backlog Elimination Drive

The Guild of Copy Editors invite you to participate in the May 2011 Backlog Elimination Drive, a month-long effort to reduce the backlog of articles that require copy-editing. The drive began on May 1 at 00:00 (UTC) and will end on May 31 at 23:59 (UTC). The goals of this backlog elimination drive are to eliminate as many articles as possible from the 2009 backlog and to reduce the overall backlog by 15%. ! NEW ! "Harvey" mannequin

Thanks for your edits to the "Harvey" mannequin article and fixing the references to something that worked. I have been working with a High School student on his first article and he was trying to trouble shoot what he had done when he added the gallery. It was an improperly placed "}}" when he moved the gallery location and did not "preview" the edit. Sorry we were moving so slow. I did revert the reference list back to the previous format per WP:LDR since that was much easier for Andy to read and edit that the more traditional reference style. No problem with your revert of the reference style - I didn't even know the style you're using existed, but apparently it does, and as long as it's not throwing reference errors (which is how I landed on the page - the broken gallery was making ref errors appear and the page pop up in a category I monitor), I'm happy! Horacio Gutierrez

I seriously want to know what makes you so obsessively and repeatedly change the article about Horacio Gutierrez? Has he offended or harm you in any way? If you want to create a valuable and helpful article about a pianist, why don't you do some real research instead of posting some cheap information about his health problems. Also , posting the press articles about his cancellations instead of posting a few great reviews , which Mr.Gutierrez receives from all major music critics , also makes me think that instead of creating a helpful Wiki Article about a pianist, you want to create a page with information more suitable for cheap newsstand papers. Vandalism patch up jobs

Hi. Yes point taken. Usually when dealing with a topic in which I have no specialist knowledge I just do a quick patch up job on the more obvious, recent edits and hope that the experts will tackle longer term or more subtle problems. Obviously this approach is not ideal, and prehaps I should think twice before touching articles that have clear long term issues. The trouble is, when ploughing through dozens of edits on vandalism patrol, and without specialist knowledge it's not always easy to spot longer term problems. For the record: no, I'm not a paid editor (the comment farther up on the page was a note someone left me to remind me to read that page for a report I am working on), and no, I don't work for a PR firm. I'm a regular old wikipedia editor who monitors the incoming edits to the encyclopedia for problems - in your case, Athena, you've been blanking out content from articles with no explanation. If you disagree with information in an article, the best thing to do is to bring it up on the article's talk page. Blanking it with no explanation has every appearance of being vandalism - someone trying to damage the encyclopedia just for fun - and is not tolerated. A fluffernutter is a sandwich! Hi, I removed the content because it wasn't cited to anything (if the information appeared in a newspaper, you need to cite that newspaper when you add the content. If it hasn't appeared yet, it really can't be added, because there's nothing to prove it's true) and because the content appeared to be mostly promoting a business. We use encyclopedic wording, which means that phrasing like "over 50 years of experience in the business and offers a unique spin on the traditional feast" and "REAL AA quality BUTTER" come across as advertising Giresi's business, not providing encyclopedic information about the topic of beefsteaks. In addition, unless there are reliable sources saying that Giresi's business is very important to the concept of beefsteaks, a whole paragraph discussing him is not called for in the article. We're not a yellowpages, basically, so unless a business is integral to the concept being discussed, there's not really any reason to name them. Finally, we try to minimize our use of direct quotations when a rephrasing would work, especially in cases like this where the direct quote reads like advertising, so the fact that the content you added was almost entirely quotes didn't help either. Sure. Phrasing like "Mexico’s newest vacation destination" and "An exclusive gated resort" and the general tone of the content you added makes it sound like you are trying to advertise for your resort, rather than writing an encyclopedia. We strive to make our content neutral rather than promotional. In addition, you overwrote what was an article on a geographical area with content about a resort. I can see that you put a lot of work into drafting up what you added, but it's going to need a fairly major rewrite to change it's tone from "Hey, come book a vacation here!" to "Here is some information about an area of encyclopedic interest."
In addition, it looks to me like you may have copied some or all of the content you added from here. If this is the case, you need to know that we cannot accept copyrighted material from other sites, due to legal licensing issues. Any content you add to the article must be original text, not copied from elsewhere. Since it's a legal issue, we take that very seriously, and if we find copyright violation material in articles, we usually have to delete it, and sometimes we have to block the user who added it if they keep adding it despite being told of our policies.

The way to contact Fluffernutter is to do just as you have done - post on here his talk page. You do not need a "helpme" to attract his attention, he will see any new messages, if you put them at the bottom of the page. New messages at random places in the middle of the page may well be missed. Also, it helps keep conversations clear if you remember to sign your messages with four "tilde" characters ~~~~ which the system will turn into a signature with your username and the time and date - like this --JohnCD (talk) 17:53, 29 June 2011 (UTC)

GOCE drive invitation

The latest GOCE backlog elimination drive is under way! It began on 1 July and so far 18 people have signed up to help us reduce the number of articles in need of copyediting.

This drive will give a 50% bonus for articles edited from the GOCE requests page. Although we have cleared the backlog of 2009 articles there are still 3,935 articles needing copyediting and any help, no matter how small, would be appreciated.

We are appealing to all GOCE members, and any other editors who wish to participate, to come and help us reduce the number of articles needing copyediting, as well as the backlog of requests. If you have not signed up yet, why not take a look at the current signatories and help us by adding your name and copyediting a few articles. I'm sure you're very good at spelling and English, but the fact remains that it's not appropriate to change spellings on Wikipedia the way you did. As long as you implement British spellings only on British articles (or articles that are written in British English), you should be fine, but if you keep changing them on other articles, you could run into trouble. Hm, I'm not really involved or willing to get involved with the article at the moment - I just reverted it to the last version I could find from before that epic edit-war started up. Your best option is probably to propose your change on the article's talk page and see if people who watch the article have an opinion about whether to re-insert that material. I'm not involved there either, but both the article and the talk page appear to be long-term battlegounds, with the article's subject or someone sympathetic persistently removing such information. A vandal has repeatedly edited the Harold Covington article with false information claiming he was in the Rhodesian Military. The source that cites this says that he was not. The discussion page for this article has been repeatedly vandalized as well.

As I said above, the correct thing to do now is to STOP REVERTING EACH OTHER (for those of you who have been) and TALK. On the article's talk page. Not here, and not by undoing each other's edits, but on Talk:Harold Covington and using actual words. Hi, I'm not sure if there's a way to add the information you want to add without it being a coatrack. Basically, the Muth article is supposed to be about Muth. The stuff you're adding is about another person, who has some vague link to Muth but isn't Muth, and you're adding a whole paragraph about how that other person is bad and committed crimes, etc. This has nothing to do with Muth unless Muth was involved in the crimes. The only connection to Muth at all in the text you're adding is that Muth supposedly "took up the cause" of this other guy. What does that mean? What bearing does it have on Muth and his career? Does it have anything to do with his political career? Is it really a notable event in the overarching career of Muth, or is it just a matter of his name having been linked with someone who got in trouble? Are you adding it because you think the event is important to Muth's story, from a neutral perspective, or because you think Muth should be punished in some form for "taking up the cause" of someone who committed illegal acts?
Basically, what you're adding is, in its current form, never going to be ok to put in the Muth article. It's possible that, with some extensive re-working, you could come up with something that explains why the information is relevant to Muth and add a sentence about the situation, but right now there's nothing in what you added that seems to show that the information is relevant to Muth. Hi, that means that the article you created doesn't give any evidence for why the topic is notable - that is, why it's important that an encyclopedia include information on that topic. You can read our notability policy for some more information, but in plain English, your article needs to say why the subject (the anthology, etc) is important. Why do people know about it or care about it? Was it highly-reviewed? Was it featuring someone famous? Was a book written about it's awesomeness? Ann Rule's Wikipedia Site re: Rick Swart

I am the web author for Ann Rule. I am not a Wikipedia editor. Friday July 22nd was my first time trying to interact within Wikipedia on a level other than just reading various topics. I saw an entry on Ann Rule's Wikipedia site that was "Contentious material about living persons that is unsourced or poorly sourced must be removed immediately, especially if potentially libelous or harmful." I found a way to remove it. I now know there are more proper (and quite well documented) ways to go about addressing this sort of thing.

Rick Swart's References on Ann Rule's Wikipedia site need to be removed. It has been discovered by the "source" (Seattle Weekly)and by one of Wikipedia editors that Rick Swart's article was at least flawed and "Contentious material about living persons that is unsourced or poorly sourced". Please remove the 2 links on Ann Rule's Wikipedia Reference Section. I'm sorry to inform you that the subject of an article has no more control over its content than any other user. In fact, per our policy on editing with a conflict of interest, you really should avoid editing the Ann Rule article at all. In general, if you have a concern over article content that relates to a living person, the best place to raise it (as an article's talk page may have low or no-traffic) is the BLP noticeboard. While you are welcome to start and participate in these discussion, at the end of the day, inclusion of content is based on reliable sources, and verifiability; as an editorial decision, and is not under either yourself, or Ms. Rule's control, as you seemed to believe in this edit. Ambassador Program: assessment drive

Even though it's been quiet on-wiki, the Wikipedia Ambassador Program has been busy over the last few months getting ready for the next term. We're heading toward over 80 classes in the US, across all disciplines. You'll see courses start popping up here, and this time we want to match one or more Online Ambassadors to each class based on interest or expertise in the subject matter. If you see a class that you're interested, please contact the professor and/or me; the sooner the Ambassadors and professors get in communication, the better things go. Look for more in the coming weeks about next term.

In the meantime, with a little help I've identified all the articles students did significant work on in the last term. Many of the articles have never been assessed, or have ratings that are out of date from before the students improved them. Please help assess them! Pick a class, or just a few articles, and give them a rating (and add a relevant WikiProject banner if there isn't one), and then update the list of articles.

Once we have updated assessments for all these articles, we can get a better idea of how quality varied from course to course, and which approaches to running Wikipedia assignments and managing courses are most effective.

Conflicts of interest -- practices for editors and what's good for Wikipedia?

Hi -- Heard your wikimania talk on editors with conflicts-of-interest. I tried to start a discussion on this at Wikipedia_talk:Best_practices_for_editors_with_conflicts_of_interest and put an example COI statement on my user page. Nobody replied. I'd be happy to collect examples of how editors handle this, make a list, work with others to define a standard good practice. If you can point me to an appropriate place to write it I'll get started. My own attempt flopped! so please lead in a constructive direction. My conflicts are relatively trivial but the general topic is interesting and relevant.
